Yeah I was at the race track as a kid watching the breeders cup races on tv as you could bet on both at the same time. I was more of a fan of the horses than wanting to bet on them at the time. I was so looking forward to this race. People who weren't around at that time don't understand the magnitude and anticipation of this race. It was the matchup everyone wanted to see. Bayakoa vs Go For Wand then sadly the unbelievable happens making it the saddest day in racing history and it still bothers me to this day along with Holly Bull limping off the track as he was just about to dust and blow by Cigar. After the Holly Bull injury happened I stopped watching horse racing. Seeing these greats get taken off the track and us robbed of what should have been great moments was just too depressing to keep dealing with. Horse racing now isn't a sport really either anymore. They're all now too concerned about money and retire great horses as soon as they possibly can to make money on stud

Hi Erin, I was thinking the very same thing, not to mention both Ruffian and GFW kept going as you said. Do you have the article where you read that about the 11 strides? Ruffian will always be my all time fav. and she still was beating that colt with 3 legs, GFW, poor girl went down, and then the horrible video of her in shock and pain trying to get away from it with a flopping leg. It seems that as soon as Bayakoa got up next to her, GFW jockey started getting into her more and I bet she dug deeper down in the track with her front hooves and those thin legs on those poor horses can only take so much. Never forgotten, beautiful fillies.. Ruffian, Go For Wand, and Eight Belles. EB had such an unusual injury, BOTH ankles having compound fractures. :( I feel so bad for each and every horse this happens to...

+Erin Fisher There's another horse buried there by Ruffian as well. His name is Timely Writer, he broke down less than half a mile from the finish line, another horse named Johnny Dance tripped over him and broke its leg resulting in his death as well. He died 6yrs and 3months after Ruffian & 8yrs before Go For Wand (same month as GFW).

25 years after I watched this race live, I still remember it like the day it happened. The call was great, the race was even better!
The second biggest tragedy, that day, was that I didn't get to see who would win that amazing race!
Upon review, I would give it to Go for Wand.
    What a race!!!!

This race ruined horse racing for me in a way. I used to loved it and followed it closely in the mid 1980’s when I was in my early 20’s. I remember I was really pumped and confident Go For Wand would win this race. This was so heartbreaking. Sadly, I think this was when I started to lose interest in the sport and eventually almost completely stopped following it.

A few days after this race Sports Illustrate came out with their issue to vote for the athlete of the year.i felt then and feel the same today that the vote should of gone to Go For Wand, she paid the price above all prices. Some may say she was just an animal, that's true but she was also a great athlete.

Probably those were the last words Randy Paul Romero told to the press last June when he was in a hospice care victim of a cancer. And undoubtedly he proved to us to be an exceptional athlete and a very courageous man. Romero suffered an estimated of 25 fractures in racing accidents, but he returned to the track with the same enthusiasm. Now he is in a place where there is no pain and suffering. God bless him! I loved Bayakoa, and did not want to see her lose...but every time I see this race, I cannot see her getting past Go For Wand had she not fell. Billy Badget and Randy Romero had a gutsy gameplan - they knew not to give Bayakoa a lead and then try to run her down in the stretch, so they took the fight to her. Splits of 23:2, 23, and 24, against a champion mare, neither giving an inch. This was a very sad day for racing, with Mr. Nickerson and Go For Wand losing their lives on the track that day.

Shaker Knit also ended up having to be euthanized in the accident with Mr. Nickerson. The BC, in the beginning years, always had the sprint first and there was always some tragedy, so they switched it up. Would like to see more racing on grass, easier on their bodies, also not run them so young, let the bones have a chance to grow. Go For Wand was run at age 2, and as stated on here, this was already her 13th race.. she could have perhaps already had a problem and the digging down in the stretch was enough to break her leg that bad. :(

Man! The issue with racing is the overuse of drugs on horses that have been previously injured and it should’t happen at all but sadly to this day it keeps happening.

If I owned Go For Wand, she would NEVER have been in that Distaff. She would have been in the Classic against the boys where she would almost certainly have run a completely different race.
In the Classic, she would have likely been well off a speed duel, probably 10-15 lengths back and made one run on the turn that would have been far less stressful than what she had to do in the Distaff. Whether or not she would have been able to hold off Unbridled in the Classic is irrelevant, only having to do the "Belmont Balcony" move that many horses back then used to win would not have had her chasing Bayakoa in the Distaff the way she had to. There are a number of horsemen I know who have since passed away that took to their graves the views that Go For Want would NOT have broken down had she been in the Classic.
What really hurt Go For Wand was the scratch of Gorgeous. With Gorgeous out, it forced Go For Wand to go after Bayakoa, which she would never have had to do in the Classic.

I would love to think Go for Wand would have won just as much you do. But the more I think about it and the more I watch her run against a champion like bayakoa does it really matter if she wins or loses by a whisker here. Go for Wand shows competitiveness, vallor, and intestinal fortitude RARELY seen. Unfortunately those same qualities may have cost her life. TREMENDOUSLY TRAGIC

This was the last horse race I ever watched. I did some research after, and learned racehorses are not physically mature when they are started on racing. They don’t achieve full growth until 5, sometimes 7 years of age. Breeding is practically incestuous. This means, recessive, harmful genes, such as for weak joints, are now dominant. Their bodies over the past 200 years have become bred for more muscle-but their legs are still thin, too thin. Since they start training while their bones are still soft, they’re in pain. So, they get NSAIDS, every day, if not stronger drugs. Because they are fed on our schedules, not the schedules of their bodies, they often get these NSAIDS on empty stomachs. Look at a bottle of Advil, a well known NSAID. The instructions say, to take it with food. Why? Because NSAIDS on an empty stomach cause ulcers. Necropsies of racehorses have found 50 or more ulcers. Horses are grazers-and, they move about as they graze. The movement helps their digestive system. Yet, we put them in stalls for up to 23 hours a day, where there is no room to move, and they can’t graze, because they’re fed twice a day only. Is it any wonder so many suffer from colic, which can require serious surgery-or even kill? Horses are social animals-even domestic horses, put into a pasture, will establish a pecking order, will form friendships, will spend time playing and grooming each other, or will simply stand close to each other. Horses kept penned up in stalls all day, have little to no chance to socialize with other horses. When they get on the track, if they try to socialize, they’re punished. As a result, they become neurotic, jumpy, and miserable. They weave black and forth in their stalls, they grab the edge of a door and suck on the wood. They kick the sides of their stalls in frustration. They get mean towards people, other horses, any animal who dares come near them. They become reclusive. If they make it to retirement, and actually get turned out to a pasture, they can show signs of agoraphobia.
If they don’t pan out on the race track or breeding shed, they’ll probably end up on a stock truck made for cattle, with 20-50 other horses of all sizes and breeds, being shipped to a slaughterhouse in Mexico or Canada. There will be no stops for feed or water. They’ll arrive, get forced down a chute with a cattle prod, or simply by being hit with whatever long handled thing available, until they are locked into a bloody stall. If they are lucky, the person there, will stun them, loop a chain around a leg, hoist their body up, and slit their throat. If they aren’t lucky, they’ll just be hoisted up, and killed while fully conscious.

You don't fuck with two-time champion Bayakoa. l'll always take an aged mare over a filly. Go For Wand thought she was going to get one of those easy leads (..like she always had). We'll I'm here to tell ya: "she didn't this day and she paid the ultimate price". Bayakoa was absolutely "ruthless" on the lead. She asked no quarters, she gave no quarters.
