After viewing "Hidden Figures" I sit here in awe regarding Katherine Johnsons contributions to the Nasa space program, yet realize this is the main problem with society. Are we more impressed with her brilliance or because she is a woman and one of color? Our biases tell us - this isn't the norm so we are almost surprised. I look forward to the day when one's gender, race and culture does not affect our expectations. To deeply admire a persons contributions without the obvious prejudices. This would be the greatest exploration of all mankind, the journey into tolerance and compassion.

In August of 2018, if she is still going (bless her heart!), she will be 100 years old.
      - Katherine Johnson was a gentle pioneer, nudging us along on that journey you speak of.
One reason many of us are amazed, is the amount of obstacles she had to overcome, just because of when she was born.
Black people were not allowed to attend school past the 8th grade where her family lived. So her parents decided they'd move. She then graduated high school at 14 years old!
She definitely had the loving support of her family, but it was in no way an easy road for her.
My admiration of her isn't because of her race or gender, but because of what she achieved in spite of them; her brilliance, her tenacity, her habit of looking beyond - seeing more...
I watch movies like "Hidden Figures" all the time. I love to learn about the lives of brilliant people who contribute monumentally to our world (eg - Einstein, Hawking, Tesla and Nash, Ramanujan, MLK, JFK...). So I would have watched HF if it was about a man; but - yay! - it was not.
Laws can change to correct injustice, but when hearts change - that's when the world will follow suit. She changed hearts :)
