So I saw this video and normally I do not watch anything that supports Pentecostalism. However, I felt God wanted me to watch the video and make a statement on what I heard. I tend to watch/listen to podcasts when on my morning walks as I have a clear head and no distractions. First I want to say I have friends that are part of the Church of God out of Cleaveland and have supported offshoot ministries of theirs. I myself do not agree with the charismatic/ Pentecostalism movement as when you test everything you hear with scripture it does not line up. 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 CEV Put everything to the test. Accept what is good 22 and don't have anything to do with evil. With that said I want to address key points I see that are not correct here. First when we read the Bible we must remember who the audience was at the time especially if Paul is written a letter to a specific person or church. His greeting does not apply to us but the addressee at the time. Yet the messages do apply within. So in regards to speaking in foreign languages. When you go back to the history as you noted here the movement started because some pastor believed they spoke Chinese. The mission failed and they changed the meaning of what speaking in foreign languages meant. In biblical times there were people that would come to Israel from all areas of the world with different languages. The prime biblical example of this is Acts 2:6 ESV And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. Many will try to use 1 Corinthians Chapter 14 to say that everyone has the ability to speak languages but the truth is if you read the whole chapter and not one verse you will see that gift of a language is only one gift that not everyone receives. Paul goes on to say that someone must be there to interpret and that the gift was to spread the gospel. We see that today with so many translations of the Bible. In the video it is noted 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 as a reference for the manifestation of speaking in “tongues” but in truth the verses actually say this 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 CEV My friends, you asked me about spiritual gifts. 2 I want you to remember that before you became followers of the Lord, you were led in all the wrong ways by idols that cannot even talk. 3 Now I want you to know that if you are led by God's Spirit, you will say that Jesus is Lord, and you will never curse Jesus. 4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit. 5 There are different ways to serve the same Lord, 6 and we can each do different things. Yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do. 7 The Spirit has given each of us a special way of serving others. 8 Some of us can speak with wisdom, while others can speak with knowledge, but these gifts come from the same Spirit. 9 To others the Spirit has given great faith or the power to heal the sick 10 or the power to work mighty miracles. Some of us are prophets, and some of us recognize when God's Spirit is present. Others can speak different kinds of languages, and still others can tell what these languages mean. 11 But it is the Spirit who does all this and decides which gifts to give to each of us. We as Christians are giving different gifts and not all the same. We are to use those gifts to bring people to Christ. No where in the scripture does it say the Holy Spirit is to use us but instead is to be our helper. The Holy Spirit was a gift to us for our baptism. I cant list all the verses in regards to the Holy Spirit but I will use a few of Jesus’ own words here. The first comes from John 14:16 CEV Then I will ask the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will help you and always be with you. The second from John 14:26 CEV But the Holy Spirit will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you. The third from Jesus is John 16:13 CEV The Spirit shows what is true and will come and guide you into the full truth. The Spirit doesn't speak on his own. He will tell you only what he has heard from me, and he will let you know what is going to happen. The Holy Spirit is our guide to do God’s will. Reading scripture we can see this. Holding to these words the Holy Spirit will help us avoid sin. We still have free will but the Spirit is always with us to prevent us from falling. We will still fall but God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are always there no matter what. Than the last point I want to make is against healing as many try to lay out. First I believe thru prayer we can be healed of many things if it is God’s will. We must remember that. To many people leave the faith because a false believe if they pray hard enough or someone speaks healing on them they will be healed. When they are not healed instead of turning to scripture they run from it. Miracles still occur today but to make it seem like a group of people caused it vs. God’s will can be seen as blasphemy. Jesus himself chose the apostles and also gave power to those he chose. Once Jesus gave the world the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit is now in charge of providing those gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 CEV First, God chose some people to be apostles and prophets and teachers for the church. But he also chose some to work miracles or heal the sick or help others or be leaders or speak different kinds of languages. 29 Not everyone is an apostle. Not everyone is a prophet. Not everyone is a teacher. Not everyone can work miracles. 30 Not everyone can heal the sick. Not everyone can speak different kinds of languages. Not everyone can tell what these languages mean. 31 I want you to desire the best gifts. So I will show you a much better way. Luke 9:1-2 ESV And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. I will end with this. Don’t be misled by what people may say. Instead look at scripture and see if it is true. Many times you will find explanations in not just one book but several to help you. If what you hear from man does not line up with scripture remember God is the one who gave authority for scripture to be written. The Word is always right. Final verse to end this comment comes from 1 Peter Chapter 4 Verses 10 and 11 CEV Each of you has been blessed with one of God's many wonderful gifts to be used in the service of others. So use your gift well. 11 If you have the gift of speaking, preach God's message. If you have the gift of helping others, do it with the strength that God supplies. Everything should be done in a way that will bring honor to God because of Jesus Christ, who is glorious and powerful forever. Amen.
Yeshua.and the apostles said there be many Jesus’s taught… all these denominations to me are junk religions, mega churches have sex clubs where they rape children adultery fraud stealing tithes due to law suits… hundreds are being exposed now. I will not support churches anymore… to much corruption anymore..
Sorry that has been your experience. Many churches definitely run after the sensational rather than love, which is what Paul warns about in 1 Corinthians 13. However, he still tells us to seek gifts of the Spirit to help others, not hurt. What do you think a proper way of having the gifts in church without turning people away would be?
Try not to become a public spectical..for starters. Don't blame to be something your not...like in being equal to God..Don't run after money making false statements..prosperity teachings as some of these million air TV. Folks do..make sure your right with God before getting behind the pulpit...Don't run around with someone else's wife..or husband..
A lot of clarity and helpful information here. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
