    My grandpa was in the 10th Mountain Division. He was a radio operator, and I remember him telling us stories about his time in Italy, and he had a few choice words about those mules... lol. His time with the 10th ended when a German shell landed near him and shredded his leg in early April (luckily his leg and his life were saved, though he used a cane the rest of his life). Sadly he passed back in May of 2014. He would have loved to see this! Thanks so much for the time and effort you put in to this. RIP Grandpa Frank.

      That's a really really great write-up and tribute to your grandpa! My dad (Edward F. Reilly) was also in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. He passed away in 2005. I'll do some more digging for you as to his exact whereabouts. From my own childhood memory - He was a yeoman in a headquarters company. He worked on stringing telephone communication wires to forward observation posts across those mountains. Radio did not work very well out there. At one command post he happened to be at, they took a direct hit from a German tank. Everyone saw the tank first traverse it's gun before it took aim to fire. They scattered out of the farmhouse, into foxholes nearby. Dad lost only an eardrum and a concussion. Lucky guy! Dad wrote about Camp Hale in Colorado where they trained. Many people in the early days were inspired by the movie "Sun Valley Serenade". It featured the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Dad and his friends were all skiers who went to the Pocono mountains in Pennsylvania. Luckily for our family, he documented many of his "war stories" when the Tandy TRS-80 first came out in the 1980's! The cassette magnetic tapes these were stored on are lost, but there are some written printouts remaining.

    My grandfather Walter Clayford Ford served in the 10th mountain division in WW2. He never spoke on his time as a warrior but from his medals he was awarded I can only imagine what he and his brothers had to endure... thanks to him and men alike the US and our allies saw victory. Thank you Papa for your service and all who have served. Rest In Peace.

    My grandfather was in the 86th he was a jeep driver, he would drive out scouts to call in artillery. He wrote Pando Commando on the side of his jeep . He said all the other soldiers thought he was a badass cause he was in the 10th mountain and they would buy him drinks and give him cigarettes.

    My late grandfather Sgt. John Lawson served in the 10th Mountain Divison, 87th Regt. He died before I was born but I have a few of his war memento's. Thank you for posting this video, I know very little of the 10th's actions other than reading The Ski Troops by Hal Burton

      John Berkery I am positive they knew each other then. Same platoon under Ed Nickerson. They were all digging foxholes when the German counterattack hit. 6 German prisoners were carrying my uncle down the hill on a blanket and artillery shredded them.

      I am sure that is true, they must have known each other, my grandfather worked for a newspaper and they published a memorial book of letters he wrote and received, he was a mortar man and a letter from a Sgt Gogolin of the mortar squad said he was with two other soldiers setting up their mortar at the beginning of the attack when the three were killed by a German mortar round, never knew him of course but he was still always my hero growing up, such a shame the war ended just a few months later, but they played a part in that happening.

    • @Nattleby
      @Nattleby 4 года назад +2

      John Berkery Another Famous story from Company G was that of Maurice “Speed” Murphy. The platoon was holed up in a schoolhouse attached to a church. Murphy, and a few other guys were in a bathroom on the second story taking cover from German Fire. One of the guys fumbled with a live grenade and dropped it on the floor. Murphy grabbed it and went to throw it out the window when he saw a nun and school children huddled directly beneath him. Instead of throwing it, he held it out the window against the wall. The blast took his arm clean off, but no one else was hurt. Talk about “Taking one for the team”!!! 😱He survived the war and was close friends with my Dad. That whole company was full of heroes.

    My Grandfather Leon Burrows and his twin brother Lawrence Burrows were both in the 10th. My grandfather was a sharpshooter and my uncle was a rifleman. They both fought through the Po valley. Unfortunately Lawrence was KIA on the first day of the assault on the town. I remember hearing about the 3 day battle because Leon was unable to recover his twins remains for 3 days and when the battle was over having to dig through the body piles to find his brother. They went through hell to try and end that war. Rest In Peace Leon and Lawrence.
