I was able to attend one of the last shows these guys did together, late in 2017. The recordings here are a little sterile compared to the highly energized public appearances they gave, talking and joking with the audience. Between sets, I jumped at the opportunity to speak with Gary Burton. What a unique pleasure he is, even disregarding his genius. It drove home what a common mortal I am.
jay elkins I saw Gary Burton in the early 80’s when Makoto was brand new to the world of jazz(man, did he have O. Peterson in his style.) My mother was just elated and was in aw at their every number, later Gary came over and talked to us at our table, that made our entire year! Exactly ten years later he played with Pat Metheny in the same town. After the concert he came out to collapse his vibes, I said “ Mr. Burton, do you remember my face?” He walked towards the edge of the stage where he could see me saying “ I see a lot of faces.." At the edge of the stage looking down at me he replied “ Oh yea I remember, you and your mother.." I almost fell to the floor.
I caught that tour in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. A fantastic show. I hadn't seen Gary Burton since the '70's and he and Ozone were magic together. I still have trouble getting my mind around how he plays the vibes so crisply with two mallets in each hand. Genius. Not to take anything away from Ozone, who is a prodigy!
My percussion professor at Western Michigan University met Gary Burton when he came and did a performance there back in the 90s. She said he used to steal individual keys from vibraphones that he would play as he traveled across the country, so his own vibraphone was covered in keys of all different colors, but each sounded so bright and beautiful. She snuck into the practice room and played them for an hour
Thanks for posting this. I had the CD when it first came out but can't find it anymore....I was fortunate to see Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone at Vibrato Grill in Los Angeles quite a few years ago. It was magical and you're only a few feet away from the masters!
what a spectacular feel and masterpiece this album is. Gary and Makoto are like caramel and chocolate, perfectly irresistible
Hidden treasure! The joy of them playing together is graspable.
God what a great interpretation of " O Grande Amor" ... a song Burton used to play vibes on with Stan Getz.

Un très beau disque ... mais un peu soûlant à la fin ... ça ne respire pas assez et puis on dirait du Chick Corea au piano mais en moins bien ....
