This Is A Two Part Story----- Part 2 • My Dentist was WRONG! ...
This week on the Nuvia Smile Stories Dr. Lorenzo Neilsen discuses options when patients have been told they aren't candidates for Dental Implants. Francis is a Nuvia Patient that was told the she wouldn't be able to get Dental Implants. She has been in Dentures for more than 20 years! As you can expect, Francis hated her Dentures. Aside from the fact that they never fit her correctly they actually hurt her to eat. Aside from the physical pain that Dentures caused her, the pain was also emotional. "People look at you funny if you don't have teeth." Francis said. During her free consultation and CT scan she learned about the option of a Sinus Lift. Due to Francis's severe bone loss in her upper jaw she normally wouldn't have been a candidate for Dental Implants. However with the Sinus Lift procedure she will be a candidate in 6-9 months after the "boney material" has grafted into her upper jaw. This will allow Francis to have strong Dental Implants giving her a permanent prosthesis that looks amazing and functions like her natural teeth again!

Since the mouth shrinks when there are no side and back teeth, does the sinus lift also widen the gums so the implants being place look aligned? Will the smile smile look natural and wide or does the mouth still look small and O shaped with teeth?

@@remmered This answer came right from Dr. Nielsen (the surgeon who performed Francis’s surgery)
When the sinuses shrink, most of the shrinking takes place inside the sinus while the outer bone remains in the same spot. So doing the sinus lift fills in the hollow part of the bone, but the harder outer shell remains in the same. So, we are able to get a good outcome of a wider smile that looks natural rather than a narrow unnatural looking smile.
