Something weird about the smart car is that due to the cabin's roll cage's round shape, they are surprisingly strong and have a fantastic safety record.
The biggest safety hazard is the topple factor. Because they are very compact with a super short wheel base, I'd imagine if you ever got one rolling you'd likely never get it to stop lol.
Americans seem to worry more about fuel economy than Europeans, even though our fuel is much more expensive than the USA. For Europeans manoeuvrability is way more important - hence the engine being rear mounted, it's not just about space, it's also about giving the car lighter steering and a tighter turning circle. . Also, for all the "being down there and looking up a trucks" thing is typical hyperbole. European cars tend to sit higher than US ones of the same type, as we like to sit high to get better visibility in congested city traffic. As for why we love manuals, I have no idea. I hate them. Auto all the way. Originally I think it was about performance - our engines are small, high revving units and early autos were less efficient on these engines.
i notice that most people that hate them have never driven them. i have had mine for a while, and its my favorite car to drive. easy to drive and park, and was super cheap to by used with only 30k miles
Oh you noticed that we never drove one did you ? Wow you must have eyes everywhere. (Whats the app for that) Well i did drive one & ya it was fun for a minute and the sound system was awesome too as you would expect the acoustics to be inside of an egg 🥚 shell . Other that that they are just just better than taking public transportation , thats all. And you have to be a cheap tight assed selfish prick to drive one in the winter here in canada . They are a danger to everybody & always blocking the flow of highway traffic snow or sun shine .. Thats what ive noticed.
@@darthdaddy6983 I think that you are confusing the Smart Car with a Prius. Smart Cars get around in the snow very well. I owned one while I lived in Michigan and it did great in the snow.
I've driven my 2008 Smart since it was new, all over the country. Never felt underpowered and it's still a kick to drive. I never feel unsafe and I never have trouble parking it. But, I can even park it in my garage, which has a lot of stuff in it. Looking at your garage, I can't imagine you could park a Schwinn in there.
He said they are slow, I figured at 70hp and it's size it should move pretty good. My 67 VW had about 60 hp , I'm sure it was heavier and it would keep up with traffic. I'd think a smart would be kind of quick, not fast but a little zippy
@@ericbest9562, I’ve had one since 2008, I’ve done 85 mph, it’s the only car in America you can raise, and lower the rag top, at full speed… I get 50 miles per gal consistently…
I was also surprised that I can fit my smart car in my one car garage with lots of stuff in it, and I also have the same comments about my car as you do.
These cars are good for big cities like London or Paris. In the USA everything is way more spread out and people love driving flatbed trucks around for no apparent reason.
Our Smartie is the most fun car to drive since I had a street rod. Everyone notices it, great mileage & easy parking, very low maintenance. Not everyone needs a Suburban to go places!
Driving a Suburban enables you to do things that are absolutely impossible when driving a smart car or any compact car. Don't hate on people just because they drive Suburbans
There's always going to be controversy with driving a smart car from the general public, who for the most part, sees it as a passing fad. I've driven one for ten years now and am aware of its shortcomings. I use it as a daily driver for general transportation and running errands in the city. Cheap maintenance and insurance along with ease of parking in sub sized spaces are big pluses. Competent driving skills and judicious defensive driving render most accident scenarios moot. If you don't practice those then by all means do not drive a small car. For more recreational driving I use my Harley or Yamaha and for more serious driving or road trips, I take the M3. I follow "to each, his own."
what's the point in getting 36mpg from 91 octane with an acceleration slower than a prius and ~30hp less? The scion/toyota iq is only a foot longer, weighs less, has 6 hp more, gets 37mpg comb., runs on 87 octane, and has a quicker acceleration.
@@chibba5418 smart car driver in Canada here, mine on a good day gets roughly 50mpg, 80HP, does highway speed, and you can get oversized winter tires for it-I've driven in snow conditions Honda civics have gotten stuck in also speaking from personal experience. So pretty good deal, considering I paid about 5K for the thing with less than 50k kms on it.
@@braidenmitchell5620 I forgot the are rear engine rwd. Still not worthwhile imo, but I definitely like the SMART car a lot more than I did noe that I know that
I have a BMW X3 and I’m buying a Smart Car as a second car. I didn’t realise how economical they are to drive around the City of London. We have to pay a daily £17.00 congestion charge to drive in London and we still have to pay for parking. Smart Cars are exempt from the £17.00 charge.
I've had my Braubus SMART car for 8 years - This car is no mere cute little TOY - it was engeneered in a country and by a people revered WORLDWIDE for the finest automobiles available to mankind, Mercedes--- i had no idea what a near unimaginably tough little machine i had gotten myself into - I've tried again and again, but have failed to break this car. It is built so impressively rugged it will Outlast my grandchildren should they wish to inherit it. Now that gas prices have risen near to $6 A GALLON in the United States, it is I that has the last laugh . The old tool bag was put to rest a long time ago -
so you are telling me that you don't have a diesel version in the US? Weird.... but as a someone who has the choice I would still rather pick petrol version over 1,3 JTD
i have to disagree with you, I had 2 smart cars, one was an electric and the other one was gas, they were very nice cars and very peppy never had problem with them and you can park them literally anywhere, and driving them in NY city was awesome because you can move all the way to the front of the line on the traffic light.I drove them at almost 100 MPH and never felt scared. unfortunately Smart is only built now with Electric motor.
As a European who has lived in the US, I can tell you this - Smarts aren't very popular in Europe as well. They're only driven in largely-populated popular cities like Paris, Prague, Budapest, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid etc., only because of their small size which allows easy parking in super-crowded cities. And yeah, I've never seen one single Smart car in the US and I've lived in Washington DC for 4 years, in Boston for a year, NYC for a month and Philly for a month. There's a reason behind this car's unpopularity - they're only good for one thing and that's parking. Oh, and repair parts are obviously expensive for a car like that and pretty hard to find.
I drive the Smart ForTwo Passion 2016 (premium gas) and I love it!! I live in San Francisco..traffic is congested and parking is very limited!! Every time I turn the corner for a parking spot, there always seems to be one there for me! The 2016 model has some power to it! It's so much fun to drive (easy-peasy U-turns) and like another viewer said..u don't feel cramped on the inside, even with a passenger on board. Great city car!!!
I live on Martha’s Vineyard, my Smart is perfect for running around. I never take it off island though. Also, having the Smart as the main vehicle on my insurance makes everything a ton cheaper.
@@propensitytoward6760 Smart cars are not safe , they invested Billions in Marketing to change people's Perceptions , However They are dangerous to drive
@@niceboy60 Consider where you would live if you buy one. You'd drive it around where people aren't going fast. You're going to use it to get from your city apartment to your city job. It's a niche car. Since it isn't meant to drive very fast, it doesn't need to be very safe, because people survive hitting eachother at 20mph just fine.
Julius Madridejos If they partner with Toyota and Honda the SMART would truly be a smart car. They would have the best small car technology from Japan. Right now it's a DUMB car or should be DUMPED.
We love our Smart Car. Best car for towing behind a motorhome. Best price, easiest to park, easy to drive, excellent mpg, great price. Cheap on tires and parts, so I'll have to disagree with you Scotty on this one, my family loves the car and I've even thought about buying a newer one.
Yes you are right. Everyone notices. Except penis extension trucks, they are either trying too cut you off on purpose or they don't bother to look in there mirror.
I have one and only time it's scary is when there's rain and strong wind on speeding highways. Doesn't feel safe to go more than 90kmh in those conditions.
I’m a truck driver. Back up for 8 hrs. When there is a fatality in an accident they usually shut the road down and sometimes you passed a offramp so you have to sit until the State Police DOT and the corner gets thorough investigation done before they open up a line. So after 9 hrs we are moving. The only 2 people that Dead are the 2 in the smart car. Which was sandwiched between a pick up truck and a semi truck. But they don’t tell the public that it would be bad advertising for the little smart car. Most crash tests are done at 45 miles an hour. I bet you won’t find a crash test done on a smart car because they know without even doing one what’s going to happen to you all they have to do is look at a full-size car and seen the damage at 45 miles an hour and you can pretty much figure out what you and your smart car gonna look like. Well at least your family won’t have to pay for a casket. I just come across this video because I was thinking of getting one of these instead of a golf cart for campgrounds because these are legal to be on any public road. If you need to go pick something up from the store.
Scotty I love your videos, and to be fair I guess the Smart is more at home in Europe than in the USA, but they are great cars. That one in the video is the later model with a different engine, the earlier ones had a Mercedes built engine with a little turbo, 3 cylinders of fun. Those engines needed careful attention to service schedule and yes they have 6 spark plugs 3 of which are hard to get to.. but that's just part of the fun. They are quirky and different. By the way, the gearbox is not exactly automatic, it's computer controlled real gearbox with clutch, just no clutch pedal! 6 speed sequential, and all the economy of a manual, but slow changes are not for everyone.
I've had mine since 2008, and love it, have over 60,000 miles on it, haven't had any problems with it, just change oil and filter and go........I only use it around town, parking is a breeze and still get mid 40's gas mileage.....
Love my 2013 electric drive Smart! Peppy and super practical. As a motorcycle rider, the Smart is a lot safer than the motorcycle especially in the winter snow.
@@alexanderdanielsson6049I have one, of the previous generation. The last ones of the current generation were all EVs. They stopped importing gas powered ones a few years ago.
I always thought the Smart car was crap... Until my wife recently bought a used 2008 ForTwo with low milage (um, cough, more like „kilometrage“?) for a laughable price... Now, there is only one huge problem she has with that car: She can‘t drive it... Cause it‘s constantly blocked by me! What a fun car, especially for the city! It‘s a gas to zoom around those narrow european city streets in it, and it‘s absolutely well thought out. Yes, top speed is limited but the acceleration is actually not bad for a 1 litre 3 piston engine with 71hp, as the car weighs near to nothing. The only thing i dislike is the automated manual transmission. It sometimes feels like the gears are shifted by a narcoleptic turtle... Over time you learn to drive it a certain way and then it gets much better. All in all: What a fun and practical car this turned out to be... I love it! I‘m always impressed how much stuff you can fit into this tiny car, when you pack it the right way! And, being a relatively tall guy, the interior never feels cramped, even with a passenger on board. I once drove a first generation Audi A3, and damn, that car made you feel really claustrophobic... The ForTwo on the other hand feels like a TARDIS, it seems to be bigger on the inside! Objective safety is great for a car that size! Subjective safety on the other hand can vary greatly between people. My wife refuses to drive it on the autobahn, while I have absolutely no problem doing that. But I can absolutely understand her, as it can be kind of scary to be stuck on the right lane between two giant trucks, which happens relatively often as the top speed is only 145kph. When looking into the interior mirror, and the truck driver behind you tries to stick his nose up your bum, it feels like you are already sitting on his front bumper... Kind of hard to get used to that.
SteliosG Thanks, man! 😊👍 English is not my native language, and while I have absolutely no problems understanding it, I‘m sometimes missing the proper words when speaking or writing... That‘s the trouble when you have no one to converse with on a regular basis... It gets rusty over times, especially when dealing with specialized topics, like technical stuff... Always glad to learn it the right way!
a G Yeah, it‘s the Pulse trim, which comes with the pedal shifters on the wheel. But it doesn’t make any difference when using them, compared to using the stick... I prefer putting it into automatic mode and let it do it‘s own thing, as my own car is a regular manual and I‘m used to being in gear, the moment I shift and release the clutch. It drives me insane when I shift a gear in the Smart, hit the accelerator and... Nothing happens for what feels like half an eternity. I can deal with that much better when the car shifts by itself. I have found out, that as soon as the car begins to change gears, when taking the foot of the accelerator a little bit, and put it back down as soon as the clutch gets released, the transition is much smoother than when keeping your foot in position or pushing down on it. Don’t know, sounds strange but while I normally prefer manual over automatic, the Smart gearbox in manual mode is kind of unbearable for me... It totally messes with anything my brain has internalized from driving a car since I got my license 21 years ago, as all the cars I owned had manual transmission... My wife, who only ever drove automatic, has no trouble with manual mode in the Smart, by the way. She usually has fun using the pedal shifters, while not being able to shift a manual higher than 2nd gear before getting a nervous breakdown! It‘s totally bizarro world! 😂 I had the opportunity to drive the current Smart model 453 last week, where you have the choice between a regular manual and a double clutch automatic gearbox instead of the automated manual that plaqued the 450 and 451... The model I tried out had the double clutch automatic gearbox... And wow! THAT‘s the way to do it! You still can operate it manually with the pedal shifters, and yeah, operate it does! A whole different kind of beast! Now the pedal shifters are absolutely fun! The whole car got so much better with a proper gearbox, you wouldn’t believe you‘re driving a Smart! Best improvement they could have made! 👍
I bought a smart car in 2009, after doing research on it. It had a five star safety Arty with Geico at the time, AND the frame of the car is a roll cage, just like a race car! You are surrounded by airbags, and the steering column does not come into your chest. So, to further these statements, I am living proof that you are safer in this car..... I was involved in a car accident in 2015 with my smart car. While taking a left turn, a car chose to pass the car behind me, and hit me in the driver side door going 55 to 60 mph! Yes, I survived that! My smart car was totaled, and I got a neck injury, but survived! My cars roll cage in fact saved me! Also it is excellent in snow! Do your homework people! I did!
I'm glad you mentioned that! When I was responding to this terrible video I forgot to mention that it itself was a 4-inch roll cage of protection. I too think it was one of the best cars that has ever been built. When I got mine, I did not want it, but I am glad to have had the experience of owning one.
I guess I should not be surprised to see such broad differences in car preference between North America and Europe. I would have thought that manual transmissions would be popular in the west, but they are hard to find in new vehicles here, even for pickup trucks. What I find most interesting is the difference between the new car buyer and the rest of us. Things like motorized hatchback lids that prohibit manual control seem over the top. When you look at how much it costs to maintain electric high tech vehicles when they fall off warranty, I wonder whether it will be viable for normal people to own a car.
A large part of the reason manual trans is disappearing as an option is because of MPG ratings. It's been a long time now that the manual has gotten worse ratings than the various types of automatics. There's always been a market for manuals in the US even though Europe likes to pretend otherwise.
If you live in a highly populated city, you don't want a manual. Having to stop at a light every 10-15 seconds of driving, and having to idle-stop your way through parking lots daily can be a real killjoy for manual transmission drivers.
999thenewman 10-15 seconds?!?!? That sounds like nothing compared to NYC! Be prepared to stop every 2-3 seconds for stop and go traffic. Contrary to what Europeans believe, I'm an American that drives a manual. To tell you the honest truth though, I HATE driving it in all the traffic. It's only fun late at night when traffic is minuscule.
Lol i have a 2005 smart car cdi love it it gets 70mpg its my daily driver and then what I need to tow I have my 07 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with the crd Mercedes diesel
Most dependable car I ever bought. In 2015 I bought a 2013 smart car for $6, 200.00. Still had 1 year warranty. In 8 years I have never had a repair of anything. 1 break job ( $475.00), 2 sets of tires, set of plugs, and oil changes. I could today sell it for not less than $9,000.00. Also, with it’s race car like superstructure around the cabin, and multiple air bags, it is considered to be one of the safest cars on the road. 79,000 miles and going strong.
I've owned a Smart car for 7 years. I recently purchased a F350 Platinum and I love it. It's a beautiful truck with all the fancy new gadgets. It even blows cold air on my behind during the summer. Something I realized, for around town driving, I prefer driving the Smart car, it's FUN to drive. I can do circles around other cars. I've decided that for all highway trips, I'll drive my truck and for around town within 10 miles, I'll drive my Smart car.
I regularly race my dork-machine Smart against stock muscle cars and win. It's so zippy and small, and I have no issues feeling safe in my car. HP means squat. For about $600, I was able to upgrade mine to be zippier by just switching out for performance spark plugs and coils and adding a Go Pedal. My 0-60 is now 6 seconds, which isn't peppy by comparison to the big boys, but it's enough for my fun driving.
One of the best cars I ever owned was pretty small. It was a 1970 Datsun 510 wagon. It was simple to maintain, easy to park, fun to drive and even though it only had a 1600 cc engine, with 4 on the floor it had enough power and was super reliable. I even drove it from San Diego up to Seattle and back.
We bought one for my mom (only for city driving in amsterdam) and it's a great car actually. This car is fun to drive because its pretty fast once you rev it (but the gearbox was so bad you had to wait like 2-3 seconds before it shifted) and it's rwd. Also im a bit over 2m long and it felt pretty big inside(as long as i wasn't sitting next to someone who also had big shoulders) The new one is feels much smaller and that's why we got my mom a Peugeot 107. Also repairs are pretty expensive and gas milage isn't really good for such a small car.
Have an f350 crew cab / yukon xl ltz / and my SMART, would not trade it for the world!! I love it and it is quick at takeoff and drive have not been over 90 because 75/80 is fast enough for me
I owned a Smart car way back in 2001, ran it for 5 years, absolutely loved it. Mine had LHD which strangely was somewhat of an advantage in the UK. It was slow, and the gearshift not good, but I got good gas mileage from it - usually 40 to 45 mile/(UK) gallon., and I used it mainly for long runs of 400 miles +. Never felt unsafe in it, and at the time I drove an 18-wheeler rated at 98000 lbs gross for a living. My colleagues used to laugh when I arrived for work, parking my Smart next to my big rig. The transmission in my M-B tractive unit worked in much the same way as the Smart and it too was mostly a PITA. Never had any problems with the car and only swapped it for a VW because I needed to carry more than one passenger regularly. and, oh yes, the engine was 599 cc and was turbocharged.
Bus driver here. Yeah, I had the same car and the same tranny. We had those stupid ZF tranny's in some of the buses. Odd that it takes someone who usually drives a 25 ton rig to understand how to drive a smart. Probably why they didn't catch on. heh
I don’t see how the US version gets lower mpg than the UK one’s. We can get over 60mpg on a long run. I have driven Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3. The Mk3 in Turbo for is superb. I love 3 cylinder engines. I had a 3 cylinder Daihatsu GTti 1L Turbo a few and it was a little rocket ship.
@@claytonberg721Changing them manually was better than leaving it in auto for Mk1’s and Mk2’s. I have driven the Mk3 in auto and manual versions and both are great.
Got our 2008 model ,used, with 104k miles on it 7 years ago and now have 175k on it. It has been rear ended once by a Jeep and had minimal damage to plastic panels which were replaced. So yes it handles urban bumps and scrapes well. In that time other than usual wear and tare items we have only replaced the throttle-body and an engine mount. Performance wise it's what you would expect from a 3 cylinder 999cc car. No not really . If you drive it automatic it's a slug, however, use it in manual mode and wind that Mitsubishi engine up and it shows it's fun side and is a zippy little thing . They handle very well for what they and but are no old school mini! As for mileage to the gallon , depends how you drive. My better half drives it automatic and gets around 35mpg, I run it manual and get over 40, thrashing it.
closertothetruth u can't eaven shop with that fake car were would u put the stuff at. my dog would probably bite me if i showed up with a fake toy car like that. lol
Sorry to contradict your opinion about the smart car, I have a 2014 smart, 46mpg and got it up to 102mph on a freeway (said the cop that stopped me).drove it thru hurricane Harvey flood water of 2ft and inside was still dry (considering the 6" clearance it did ok) also drove it for 1100 miles to New Mexico with 4 stops for fuel (21$ each full) came back home later that week thru 5" of snow, it did just fine, cross wind in the west Texas are bad but that didn't stop me from driving it at 70mph. What this car saves between gas and maintenance, pay for the car note (185$/mo) is a great car if you have one. I even took my wife camping using it and we had all we needed, plus it fit on the bike trail. After all it cost 17k , some spend that much on tires rims and a lift.
[fists bumb] yeh I’ve taken my 2011 to and from Austin twice now. 107k miles. No major engine repairs. Spark plugs. Coil packs. Cooling fan. Change oil if I’m bored or every 3-4 miles. Takes me to work. My first and best car to date. Used to cruise all over Houston with the old lady everywhere without a fear of parking. Cops never think you’re up to no good so they never really take you seriously unless you drive like you own a big Ford diesel. Two years later (bought it used) I have the Lord, Karma and luck on my side.
Seriously? The semi argument? You do realize they have semis in Europe, and your SUV will still be flattened by one. Oh, we had better ban motorcycles because they will lose to everything. UGH,.
I actually love small cars. Always wanted a smart car. Im single I don’t drive very far to go to work or the grocery store. I like things that are easy to park and fit in spaces.
I love my Smart Roadster, tuned by Brabus, runs cheap, fast and funny. No power steering, no need. Light, low gas usage, easy tune-able, its also possible to tune the horrible gearbox, faster shifts. It feels like a little low sportscar! I will never sell it. Thr Smart have a special frame to protect the passengers when you crash, and according to fith gear you are likely to bounce away anyway, its a light car.
I watched that fifth gear video. You're going to bounce back but that extreme change in momentum is probably going to wreck you're body. Can you imagine going 50mph straight then hitting a car head on and going backwards 30mph or so. That's like an 80mph change in momentum in a matter of miliseconds
poopmonster, I haven't seen the fifth gear episode but that's all I ever took away from the whole Smart car tub. The thing is going to pinball you all around the road, at that point it doesn't really matter if it's sturdy and can hold the weight of another car or something like the ads focused on lol
Kzero yeah. If you like your car good for you, that's what mostly matters. But thinking you're safe in a smart car, especially in America, is foolish lol
I've lived in Scandinavia / Europe for just shy of two decades. I can tell you that Smart cars are fantastic for cities. However, everything you've said is true. Even on the "small" highways of Europe, you don't feel safe in these cars. I had one (a mid 2000's model) that I loved to drive around town. I tried the highway once, ONCE. I ended up selling it to buy a Rover 75 which was just as good gas mileage and heaps better for space and I could drive on the highway without feeling like I was a tin can between bowling balls.
It’s a really good RV tow vehicle. This may be a specific use case, but it works very well for that. The 2016 and on models (Model 453) is specifically rated for towing four down. Ironically, it really doesn’t feel like you are in a small car.
dunno man... I own 3 of them and not an issue from any of them... 1 has over 205K miles and still purrz like a kitten... so far Ive only had to change oil and headlite bulbs and 1 set of brake pads and 1 set of tires on my hi mileage Smart... but... I do agree, parts are expensive, but then again, most parts for any car are expensive....
I bought one of the first Smarts to hit the States in early 2008 (one of the first shipment, actually). Enjoyed the car for almost 10 years and sold it last summer - I was thinning the herd and wanted to be down to one 4-wheeler. I miss the little beast.
I have never owned a Smart, but I drove one for a day while my own car was in dock. It was great! It had the auto/manual gearbox and just a 1-litre engine but it was a hoot to whiz around town. No complaints.
It always makes me laugh hearing about how under powered cars are... my 85 jetta diesel only has 52 hp stock still drive it to this day, mid to upper 40's mpg
I have a 2008 with 72k miles on it...just took it 100 mile trip was the longest trip I've done with it so far(had it since February) it did pretty well on the 100 miles....have an issue with the convertible top it blew off and became unglued put Flex tape on it and it's okay now
I think most of the people that bought these live here in New York because I see soo many of them. The funny thing is, I usually see one taking up a ton of space because the driver can’t park to save their life.
Oh, but they think they are saving the earth, driving their toy outdated fuel-burning car, so doesn't that count for anything? Of course stupid people who buy stupid stuff often can't drive well, well because they are so stupid.
Chus Papi no you morons. I have a smart car because I have a family in NYC of 4 and we own 9 cars collectively without a garage so we use the smart car to take up spaces for our bigger cars and to be able to find parking somewhere else when we go alone or with another person.
JDM A'F well when you have an electrical company it’s kind of hard to bring supplies onto public transportation. Sorry I don’t have a dead end job like you and I need vehicles for me and my employees. Also I have a house in PA and you can’t use the MTA to get there so cars are kind of necessary. Don’t speak for people if you don’t know what they need moron.
Orang yes I do understand that. But in the US, 93 octane premium gasoline costs about 60¢ more per gallon than 87 octane regular gasoline which adds to the operating cost.
blue06lt ahahaha the lowest is like 95 here and then premium fuel is an option but no cars really need it. The super diesel or unleaded fuels may be recommend for some cars but it’s literally only things like a Porsche but you don’t have to and it won’t ruin your engine.
I have a smart car, I bought it because I had a truck at the time but needed something dependable to drive. It was also the cheapest cars they were selling besides old high mileage cars. I realize it's not a great car, but I have yet to regret it. I went with it because I am a weird person and liked the idea of being a 6'5'' guy climbing out of such a tiny car. I do fear one day not being able to keep up with the repairs. But I already lost my truck, which was my real "Baby" so....eh Hopefully I'll have a nice toyota truck and a Kawasaki KLR 650 by then.
xinic5 omg me too! I had a Ram 3500 and had to sell it to move into this house. With the money I had leftover, I bought my Smart. I originally intended to have as a second car. Truck had problems after problems that I couldn’t keep up with my salary at the time. Now, I weep because I would have loved to have that contrast of a Cummins and a 3 cylinder. To this day, I’ve only had to replace a radiator fan motor and battery. And of course Tires and Oil/Coolant Changes.
I’m a smart car owner. I love the car it’s my all time favorite. I have a bright yellow 2008 For two and I get lots of compliments and it’s not the fasted but it will get me from point A to point B just like any other one. Parking this is my absolute favorite.
My ex gf bought a 2016 Smart Fortwo brand new, it now has almost 80k miles on it and has been extremely reliable, no issues, takes only about $20-$25 to fill up, and gets excellent MPG.
Well I'm from Texas and am a horse of a different color and own a smart and love it(and I think everyone has a toy haha) and have maintained watching videos here I have had it for awhile and love it and most parts can be bought online I bought mine cheap and low miles 2013 but to each their own.
SUGAR XYLER same with you buddy to each there own that why some like motorcycles and small cars and some don't open your mind is the smart cars saying well some people can't 😄
My 2018 smart for four gets 40mpg on normal roads and 60mpg on the motorway with a manual transmission, parts are cheap, in Europe this car makes complete sense.
Rýán Túçk i don't think so. He's been around forever. Chris fix has 3 million. Eric probably has something around there. Scotty has been on here forever
Vytautas Peckas I never questioned the viability of the project. I guess that not even in the video was mentioned that. What I would like to highlight is the practicality of that car. I am a petrolhead, I love cars, I have a smart for two, the ride is crap, it is slow and the gear box is a joke. (It is not automatic as Scott said in the video), but it is so easy to drive around town that more than makes up for all the problems that it has...
I see so many of those in San Francisco and Everytime I see one I'm so jealous because they can park almost anywhere! You don't know how many times in sf I think I found a spot but I don't fit and wished I had a smart car
In my congested and crazy area (Northern New Jersey) it's only a smart idea if you desire to drive a car that doubles as a casket when you get rammed by someone on our dangerous roads.
I love the big American cars but damn you guys need some hatchbacks. Spent a fortune on hiring a standard car like a Fusion. The trunk was tiny. So I went for a charger, and could still only fit two suitcases in the trunk. My dad's got a new Civic Hatchback, a much smaller car, but can easily fit three suitcases with extra space for backpacks etc.
I've been saying for so long people need to get hatch backs. Fuck sedans, hatchbacks are more practical. Thank God the Corolla Hatcback is coming to hopefully push the sedan sales aside.
Had one for 5 1/2 years and it is very fast on the get go, stop on a dime, go up hills without hardly gasing it! 5 1/2 years with only oil change with filter, once adjust brakes and presto great car! I had a porsche 924, a Renault and 1984 Mini Cooper in Germany and many other cars here and abroad....Smart cars are great roomy little cars with Mercedes quality!
I enjoy my 2015 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive. I’m 6 foot 3 and I feel comfortable. Very simple maintenance, just the basics...I’ve been averaging 40 miles a day and that’s costed me $35 a month in electricity. And I just use the included 110 volt adapter. I go through a tank of gas in my truck(second vehicle) every few months because it get so much use out of the Smart. It makes me smile!
Colleague didn't receive a raise one year for buying a Smart Car. Hard to prove but the bosses always laughed at the sight of it in the parking lot. Maybe his problems were much deeper than 'just' buying a stupid car.
@@luisrosales9349 What's your point? Have you ever owned one? Driven one? Or atleast sat in one? People buy these cars for certain reasons not because they just need a car or else they would just by any other car.
I like your videos but that was a pretty dumb thing to say 0:48. TAG Heuer are watchmakers but they made and still make great engines, and they used to be used by RedBull F1.
I actually like dumb cars as there is a lot less electronic shit to go wrong and the simple interiors are more natural design wise where there isn't so many screens and buttons Everywhere. The seats in newer cars are Not comfortable and at the risk of sounding much older than I am I wish they bring back pillowed seats that used to be common in the 70s and 80s luxury cars.
EXACTLY!!!! Less crap to fix, people today are to lazy to roll down a window, or unlock a door. Or god forbid, unlock a trunk! Heaven forbid! They want a computer and a small motor to do it for them. And they can pay to fix it, WHEN it allllll breaks ! We Americans USE to have those wonderful 'Lay-Z-Boy' pillow type seats in cars, nice and over stuffed. Now all you get is hard foam on plastic crap! And you pay 4 times as much .All cookie cutter ,all look exactly alike, all black/charcoal!

Something weird about the smart car is that due to the cabin's roll cage's round shape, they are surprisingly strong and have a fantastic safety record.
How do they fare with being rear ended? Having the engine in the back is my concern
The biggest safety hazard is the topple factor. Because they are very compact with a super short wheel base, I'd imagine if you ever got one rolling you'd likely never get it to stop lol.
@@borglaw Thta's their weakness, and even then, the rear crash rating is good enough

Smart cars are great for big cities like NYC! It’s not only about gas mileage but also PARKING which could save you a lotta time
Americans seem to worry more about fuel economy than Europeans, even though our fuel is much more expensive than the USA.

For more recreational driving I use my Harley or Yamaha and for more serious driving or road trips, I take the M3.

i have to disagree with you, I had 2 smart cars, one was an electric and the other one was gas, they were very nice cars and very peppy never had problem with them and you can park them literally anywhere, and driving them in NY city was awesome because you can move all the way to the front of the line on the traffic light.I drove them at almost 100 MPH and never felt scared. unfortunately Smart is only built now with Electric motor.
If you live in a city like NYC and you want a car, that's the way to go. Finding parking here, is either crazy expensive or extremely hard to find.
But onece shit happens, you are dead

Oof ik the pain of trying to find a space in Manhattan
Get a bike! Loose weight, stay in shape and good for your heart. ;)

Scotty doesnt factor fun
SteliosG Thanks, man! 😊👍
English is not my native language, and while I have absolutely no problems understanding it, I‘m sometimes missing the proper words when speaking or writing...
I had the opportunity to drive the current Smart model 453 last week, where you have the choice between a regular manual and a double clutch automatic gearbox instead of the automated manual that plaqued the 450 and 451... 👍
I bought an electric smart car for 3200 bucks, runs great for everything under 70 miles per day
I bought a smart car in 2009, after doing research on it.
When you look at how much it costs to maintain electric high tech vehicles when they fall off warranty, I wonder whether it will be viable for normal people to own a car.
spelunkerd Tacoma has a manual option
You run the chance of needing a left knee replacement after decades of driving a manual anyway.

I do the same except I have a Geo Metro and a Crown Victoria.
@@RoboCoonie they werent racing you lmao. if they gunned it you would be gapped into next week
smart cars go 0-60 in like 8-10, my 07 Taurus beats that
*oh girl don't do it!*
*Girl I'm not gon do it, I was just thinking about it...*
*I did it*
what are your thoughts on the car? if u rlly bought it :D
@@forestlawyer I've had her for almost two years now and she's great. Tbh couldn't have asked for a better first car
In the process of doing it 😁👌🏼
One of the best cars I ever owned was pretty small. It was a 1970 Datsun 510 wagon. It was simple to maintain, easy to park, fun to drive and even though it only had a 1600 cc engine, with 4 on the floor it had enough power and was super reliable. I even drove it from San Diego up to Seattle and back.
I know. He acts like they never had low powered cars before. My dad had a Chevette that had maybe 40 horsepower and that was a new one
We bought one for my mom (only for city driving in amsterdam) and it's a great car actually.
This car is fun to drive because its pretty fast once you rev it (but the gearbox was so bad you had to wait like 2-3 seconds before it shifted) and it's rwd.
Also im a bit over 2m long and it felt pretty big inside(as long as i wasn't sitting next to someone who also had big shoulders)
The new one is feels much smaller and that's why we got my mom a Peugeot 107.
Yes id love to buy a car from a watch maker , they are the finest engineers
It's amazing how far the "Motorcycle and Sidecar" concept has evolved.
No crumple zone so you get savage whiplash, they actually did supprisingly well in crash tests, but I'd be too afraid to own one.
You are immediately debunking your own comment? Lool
Yep you'll survive in a typical low speed crash but you'll die from the g forces in most high speed crashes with no crumble zone
They use that "reinforced cell" technology, that's how they do well in crash tests, but these cars were never designed for high speed driving.
closertothetruth u can't eaven shop with that fake car were would u put the stuff at. my dog would probably bite me if i showed up with a fake toy car like that. lol
Dirty Bong Water a bigger vehicles would drive over u like a speed bump
I love my 2014 Smart Fortwo!
17k for tires, rims and lift ?
I love my 2005 smart cdi getting a mpg of 70
I love my 2013, but really wish I had a 452 after seeing the differences.
Seriously? The semi argument? You do realize they have semis in Europe, and your SUV will still be flattened by one. Oh, we had better ban motorcycles because they will lose to everything. UGH,.
Yeah, you’ll probably go right under it......like in national lampoons Christmas vacation....
Semi driver probably won’t see you anyway.
Wtf you
I actually love small cars.
Was there something wrong with your car or why did you only go on the highway once?
+Peter Dinkelsberg He said he didn't feel safe.
Just tells you its not for pussies
Lol, my main mode of transportation is a Honda CBR1100XX. When I want a car, I want one that's bigger than my motorcycle.
Theres a different between feeling safe and being safe.
We should all get together with our Smart Cars (after the (civid 19 passes) at Scotty’s place.
I concur!
I second that.
Is that the U.S. version?
I bought one of the first Smarts to hit the States in early 2008 (one of the first shipment, actually). Enjoyed the car for almost 10 years and sold it last summer - I was thinning the herd and wanted to be down to one 4-wheeler. I miss the little beast.
They're good cars for pulling behind RVs if you drive near urban areas.
I have never owned a Smart, but I drove one for a day while my own car was in dock. It was great! It had the auto/manual gearbox and just a 1-litre engine but it was a hoot to whiz around town. No complaints.
yeah well,I dont do much highway driving,70 hp is plenty, and I like the idea of filling my tank for $25
bloodsling my mazda 3 costs 30$ to fill... 186 hp
@@DylanMediaTV where I live gas is just shy of $6 a gallon..just throwing that out there as another consideration for a low hp ICE
What's the speed limit on american highways ?
It always makes me laugh hearing about how under powered cars are... my 85 jetta diesel only has 52 hp stock still drive it to this day, mid to upper 40's mpg
I am in Los Angeles, in my Fortwo I am often hitting 85 mph to 90 mph.
We've had one for five years its a wonderful machine
Noice!
I've never driven one. I'm not going to argue with people who have them and like them.
Empty Name okayyy.. lol 😂

No, just one of those Americans with no volume control 😉
At least they’re smart ppl
I loved it
I bought one,I love it,each to their own.
Another expensive reality of driving a smart car is they require premium fuel. You can’t run 87 in it.
blue06lt you know that gas is 4x cheaper in US compared to EU ?
Orang yes I do understand that. But in the US, 93 octane premium gasoline costs about 60¢ more per gallon than 87 octane regular gasoline which adds to the operating cost.
blue06lt here's where you get bitched out by him and other people in Europe because their has is so much more expensive. But yes I get your point
blue06lt ahahaha the lowest is like 95 here and then premium fuel is an option but no cars really need it. The super diesel or unleaded fuels may be recommend for some cars but it’s literally only things like a Porsche but you don’t have to and it won’t ruin your engine.
Chatta290 your 95 is the same as 90.25 here. Your 98 is 93.1 here
I have a smart car, I bought it because I had a truck at the time but needed something dependable to drive.
Mine is also a convertible top. Lol
Did it come with tampons
Raging Russian No! Did I get ripped off? Do others come with tampons?
You probably looked like a 6'5" super freakshow coming in and out of that coffin piece of shit car.
I’m a smart car owner. I love the car it’s my all time favorite. I have a bright yellow 2008 For two and I get lots of compliments and it’s not the fasted but it will get me from point A to point B just like any other one. Parking this is my absolute favorite.
Try a smart brabus 0-60 6.9 seconds 137mph
David Thompson almost got one a couple of yrs. ago. It was the coolest lookin’ thing..,
Exactly, but pity it's on the pricey side, close to a Ford Fiesta
My ex gf bought a 2016 Smart Fortwo brand new, it now has almost 80k miles on it and has been extremely reliable, no issues, takes only about $20-$25 to fill up, and gets excellent MPG.
Well I'm from Texas and am a horse of a different color and own a smart and love it(and I think everyone has a toy haha) and have maintained watching videos here I have had it for awhile and love it and most parts can be bought online I bought mine cheap and low miles 2013 but to each their own.
have fun when a transfer truck is headed your way, you'll be toast XD
SUGAR XYLER same with you buddy to each there own that why some like motorcycles and small cars and some don't open your mind is the smart cars saying well some people can't 😄
Funny I pass them and ride next to them😆
DoesNotConsent Ever I pass them😃
DoesNotConsent Ever no different than any other car or sports car.
My 2018 smart for four gets 40mpg on normal roads and 60mpg on the motorway with a manual transmission, parts are cheap, in Europe this car makes complete sense.
right, one of the Only things that "makes sense"! LOL.

Matt Stevens he should be there already. Wtf
Rýán Túçk i don't think so. He's been around forever. Chris fix has 3 million. Eric probably has something around there. Scotty has been on here forever
I might agree with you in America, but in Europe that car makes a lot of sense.
TRILHOS CDTM Every road over there is like driving on a sidewalk
SMART is failure even in Europe. They put BILLIONS into R&D. I guess if you burn that amount of money you can't just give up on it.
The SMART is not a car for men. I'd never want that trashcan on wheels.
pat1981lux has anybody asked you if it was a man`s car? Are you trying to compensate for something with that answer?
I see so many of those in San Francisco and Everytime I see one I'm so jealous because they can park almost anywhere! You don't know how many times in sf I think I found a spot but I don't fit and wished I had a smart car

A “Smart Car” is the equivalent to driving a street legal golf car with doors.
But the golf car has more power!
In the "Villages" area of Florida (a big retirement community), I see smart cars parking in the golf cart spaces all the time.

I love my Smart car. I drive 80mph in Atlanta Highway traffic everyday. I think it scares people manhoods.
Big car small willy so they say . And I got a small car :)
SlovesL get a Crown Vic. The trunk space is huge on those cars.
Jason thing ways 2 tons and burns through a tank every day lol
SlovesL i don't think the gas is too bad considering the weight. But yeah there are better options out there lol.
I've been saying for so long people need to get hatch backs. Fuck sedans, hatchbacks are more practical. Thank God the Corolla Hatcback is coming to hopefully push the sedan sales aside.
Americans love their cars and trucks having big hoods with a little trunk or little bed..
That's really SMART info..thanks!!
No way, a smart car with a Hayabusa bike engine in it is the best thing ever 😁 lol

Yugos really are cool

I drove one for a while. It's suprisingly fast and roomy. My only disappointment was the feel efficiency.
circeowaggles fastt?????? 50hp fast

Yeah if only it could feel more efficiently.
Mines done a trip around Australia towing a small camper trailer. They are great cars and cheap to run.
Colleague didn't receive a raise one year for buying a Smart Car. Hard to prove but the bosses always laughed at the sight of it in the parking lot. Maybe his problems were much deeper than 'just' buying a stupid car.
Not Even in México, it's a car expensive to buy and repair, and unsafe.
You can really call it unsafe when everyone drives like a madman. I went to go visit my dad in Mexico and I would not even dare drive over there.

TAG Heuer are watchmakers but they made and still make great engines, and they used to be used by RedBull F1.
Raezer When you say TAG Heuer you mean Renault right?
And you pay 4 times as much .All cookie cutter ,all look exactly alike, all black/charcoal!
the more complex the car, the more that can go wrong.
YUP! And a mechanics dream.
Smart stands for "Swatch Mercedes Art"; nothing to do with the amount of technology in the car.
i love my smart car! 2008! 90,000 miles so far. but it's a rough ride!
