thank you for that detail at the end, 9 years later and youre helping focus owners like my friend everyday
Once again, I have to thank you for this channel and your expertise! I PROUDLY still own my 1996 decked out, one of a kind, Conversion Ford Explorer! It’s wonderful knowing that I can check here for pointers that a Haynes manual doesn’t tell you regarding idiosyncrasies between the different years! It has over 250K miles on it and I wish I had kept it as a Collecter car. If I could find another, I’d buy it in a heartbeat! It’s interesting that when ordering the key cylinder replacement, they needed to know the exact month and date it was manufactured. Please keep posting anything else for anyone else who owns these Fords and follows you or for those who might still find your EXCELLENT shared experience and advice!🙏👏😎💕🙏❤️😎🤠!
Conversion ford explorer?? Van or truck?? I am in a 94 ford e150 conversion van 5.8L all leather absolutely mint picked up in 2017 with 18,800 miles on it. 45,000 now. I absolutely love this van.
Some guy in Missouri posted a video pulling the airbag and steering wheel on a obs f150 to change the lock cylinder. We spent a year one night in Misery on our way to Arizona. Thanks for posting FordTech!
Just did this today. This really works ! At first this key would not turn to the on position. It finally loosened after i sprayed WD-40 into the lock assembly. Thank you.
Thank you very much I love your explanations on how to do things! I don’t mean to complain but there’s too many videos out there of people giving you the full history of their truck before they show you how to do what you’re looking for! In my defense I’m an old bitter crabby old man with no patience and I don’t care to hear about everybody’s personal history on that truck !!
RUclips is a great source of information. you saved the day . ty for posting
I can't believe it... I just can't believe it... too many years looking and looking, spending some nice bucks on the Haynes service guide... and literally is this easy... lol!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Just want to say thank you I have literally rebuilt my 93 ford e350 completely off your videos as you as my teacher you are appreciated sir👍

Thanks for having a very clear, precise video. Good sound quality makes a huge difference especially when it comes to giving instructions.
Line it back up the way it came out,it only goes in one way, like a puzzle piece, put everything back together, great. But what do you do if you have no keys to turn the switch?
Drill it out and turn it with a screwdriver
Take a pocket knife and a pair of plyers and twist the ignition. You can put a screw drive run along the side to pop the ignition and install and new ignition lock cylinder they come with keys. Depending on the security your key may need programed or you can use a wire on your starter fuse under the hood.
What if you don't have a key and you lost it how do you get to switch out if you don't have a key to turn it on
How do you get the ignition switch out if you lost the key anybody know
your tips are very helpful, I'm a ford man from way back. I just drive it, keep up the oil changes and have very good luck with them! don't care what you drive, you take care of your car, it will take care of you! thanks for the videos!
I know this is an old video got dude thank you so much I’ve been trying to find a good explanation video, I had to replace the ignition switch in my 89 Marquis and had no idea what to do. Thanks so much appreciate it
Had an indicator wire break in the column and this was the key I needed to get that top half of the shroud off. Thank you!
Being a Ford guy and owning 4 of them, I really like knowing your on RUclips posting these great informative videos. I've learned a lot of tips and things to look out for by watching your videos and appreciate it. Keep them coming I enjoy watching them and learning from them even if I don't own the model your posting a video about.
Thank you soooooo much!!! I have a 2001 Ford Excursion and only took me 15mins and I have no experience in the automotive field! Thank you for your honesty!!!
Great platform with the quick tips saved me a lot of time as it reminded me of how to do this. Which gave me time to leave a like, a comment and a thank you. As I'm not frustrated and bouncing from video to video looking for the needed info. Again, Thank You!
Dude, you're a life saver! I work on MINI and everything is completely different. These little tips are critical in saving time for guys like me. Thank you for your knowledge. Best!
Tks, this just helped me out. Just removed it because of this video.
The best tech advice. Thanks
Thanks for your clear & easy to understand videos, keep up the time saving good work....5 stars...
Last time I was in there I broke my tab off to kill the ding.. this time I said I bet I don't need to take these screws out and here you are! Thanks for the 3 minute fix, I'm going back to doing nothing!
Excellent video...knowing what you're trying to depress inside the access hole makes all the difference. thanks. Worked great. e
Thank you for keeping it short and simple! You really helped me out man
I just bought 1 of the most beautiful Canadian barn finds I ever came across just because of the shape it's in. A 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark 3. 46000 miles parked in a big open barn in the middle up against a wall since 1979. The car is all there except? The KEYS! I almost died when I popped the hood grabbed the crank and it turned. My question is: How do I pull the ignition out without the keys. To everybody out there that see's this It is up for grabs after I get new keys for it. The other question I have is, should I start the car or leave it for the next guy?
If my truck has an anti-theft system, is there anything I should know before I remove the ignition lock? Will something get screwed up if I remove it?
Love this. You rock.🤘😝 My boyfriend was about to rip apart the whole steering column!! Saved me from hearing all the cussing. Lol
Thank you Ford Man. You saved me a lot of time. You have many good vids. Don't go anywhere, we need ya!!!
I know this is a very old video made when I was about 10 lol but do you have any advise for me? I lost my key about 2 weeks ago and haven't been able to find it and that is the only reason I need to replace the ignition lock cylinder. What do I do about that? I had a spare key made a while ago but it doesn't start the truck since my key was worn down with the ignition over time. Do you think the spare will still work for this? I'm pretty sure it will turn the ignition, the fuel pump, battery, and the alternator don't try and run when I turn it though.
This doesn't apply to a 1988 Ford E350 but this is a great video and I'm thankful for you putting them online for us.
so glad to see this vid - was at the gas station last night and the key just got stuck in the ignition, wheel wouldn't turn... i pulled the 'girl in distress' card (which by the way, i hate doing) and a gentleman at the next pump, as luck would have it, had had the same issue and did the brake, pull the wheel, jiggle jiggle which at least got me home... so assuming i need another of these, which will have to be ordered, is there a way i can keep the many key/remotes i have?? also, can i give it a couple shots of something like a dry lubricant to at least keep it going until i get a replacement?
Hey I jist bought a 1991 Ford F-450/F-Super Duty... It has an ignition problem the steering column is the most simple with no wiper controls, cruise, or extra controls of any kind... When I go to turn it on the ignition wants to turn back too far where it kills the engine, I have to remove the shroud and place vise grips on the metal rod to hold it in place. I when I place the vise grips on the rod it can be too far forward to the point where the signals and climate controls won't work (because it thinks the starter is engaged), but if it backs off too much a bump in the road will kill the engine. Luckily its a standard transmission so if it dies going down the road you just turn the ignition forward and it restarts the engine without stopping and engaging the starter again. But if you do this going down the road. Un burnt fuel goes out the exhaust and I literally exploded the muffler driving it home from purchase on a 700kms trip from norther Alberta to southern Alberta. Any tips?
What if I cannot turn the key into the run position? Is there a way to remove that cylinder without turning the key in the run position?
Thank you so much! You made that incredibly easy by explaining and showing the ball mechanism release. Popped right out!
Love your channel. I was able to fix my own passenger airbag switch that had been dinging and dinging and chiming and dinging...well you get the idea. A guy wanted 100.00 to change it out for me, but I watched your video and did it myself!! And Im just a GIRL!!! lol Thanks!!
Thanks for a short but great video! Little tips help a lot!!
Wow! What a pro, thanks for the professional easy install video!
Seems like your the one that can explain it simply enuff.
Thanks.
My ignition switch on my 11’ Ranger isn’t staying in the accessory position. Can I swap a new switch for my old one that seem late worn or broken?
Very nice videos. Detailed and informative. I have subscribed. Thank YouI have a 2007 Ford Escape XLT 2.4 Cylinder. Home Burglarized and they also stole my ONLY Car Key. They did not Steal the car because I removed the Battery and it was in the Garage on a Trickle Charger. However I do not have ANY keys to the Car. I can get into the Car because the Doors are unlocked. I ordered from Ebay two spare PATS Keys. If I do remove the entire Key Cylinder and Purchase a New one from AutoZone, how do you get a Blank Key to Work on a New Cylinder? This part confuses me.
I had a question I'm doing this same job on my 07 crown Victoria I have the new ignition with the key but I lost my old key and I'm not able to get into the run position is there another way to get it into the room position without a key maybe using a screwdriver to turn it over to the on just so I can get the ignition out I appreciate your advice in advance
What if you do not have the keys for the Ford that you are working on.
I might be buying a 1989 Ford ranger from a friend but the keys were recently stolen in a home invasion. What would be that process that I would need to follow to rekey the ignition and doors?
I have a 96 Ford f150 same like your video but my cylinder lock turns easy to the first and second decision for when it comes to starting a car it's kind of stiffy but turns the car on easily. I never had a problem turning the car on but the key on the final turn is very stiff. How can I fix this can you help me? Thank you
I’m looking at buying a used 2012 Ford F250XL 6.2 gas engine unfortunately he doesn’t have the key for it how can I go about removing or replacing the ignition key tumbler so I have a key to start it with any help would be appreciated. Thanks love your videos been very helpful on my ford trucks.
Love the videos you post great information. I recently replaced the cam fallowers on my 05 Lincoln navigator thanks to your great information. But now im having a different problem, my navigator starts to crank on its own without the ignition being on. Would this be an ignition problem. Thank you so much and i hope to hear from ya
Cant say ive seen this issue, hopefully the master tech will see this. Is it still doing it ?
Thank you bro u always break it down and make r life easier 💯 🙏
Thank you for clear instruction. After removing, and reinstalling cylinder, ignition works fine, but key is stuck... tips?
Same thing happen to me did you fix the problem?
Any luck with the issue?
Omron switch on Shifter column console? Tells truck its in park.
Just saw.... You came in clutch
The removal seems easy. Is there a trick to replacing the new oneM Is there a video for it?
dear sir..thanks for the nice video... i have an 2012 ford edge... and once the climate is hot.. ignition doesnt crank at all... have to wait untill its pleasent weather.... whats the problem..many thanks in advance
Good video. I always seem to forget the pin on the cylinder lock mechanism.
again dude, good quick tip! if i had time i would show whats done on a cobalt ignition recall, which requires remoing the 3 7mm screws and taking off the 2 trim piece halfs under the wheel, and ofc 2 torx 15's for the switch, and run position and a 90 deg pick to remove cylinder! bing bang boom done xD
ford bin releasing many recalls in the last few months?
Kevin Rogers Yeah I know what you mean on the gm lock cylinders had a regal once. Ford has been releasing plenty of recalls most of them stupid stuff extended warranty programs etc to increase customer satisfaction which is a good thing.
Bought a 2003 crown Victoria from a tow yard with no key, I want to change the ignition how would you go about changing it in the lock position?
I bought a new ignition cylinder for 1994 Ford Ranger. As I was taking it out of box 2 little pins fell out. Do you know where they go?
That was great......Is it that easy for a 2001 Ford Escape? Do I need some special scanner?
TY. I have a question. My windshield wipers will on work if I am giggling the ignition lock cylinder (unless I find "the sweet spot"), does that mean the whole thing is loose? (something is loose the way I can wiggle it).
I lost my ford ranger keys to the ignition switch so I used a screw driver and break the lock and wasn't really able to turn it so I drilled the pinball out and that worked now I've got underneath is a bigger hole than the original pinball so it's bigger 😅 I'm wondering 🤔 if I could use jb weld? To fill in it or maybe a bolt ? Would a bolt interfere with anything like the electronics lmk
Great video good info but my question is how do I remove the ignition lock cylinder without the key, it is missing but have another cylinder
you must drill it out
@@FordTechMakuloco hey whats up man, you drill exactly where you insert the key straight in? Or what do you mean man? Thanks in advance
Hey, we've got a 98 Windstar and we're working on replacing the ignition lock cylinder and I have a question: the instructions we got with our cylinder say that for some models you have to detach an alarm wire from the old cylinder and attach it to the new one. Is the Windstar one of them, and am I right in that we'd have to remove the shroud on the steering column to attach that wire? Thanks in advance!
There is a little key in sense wire on there most years and a orange switch on the lock cylinder itself. If the lock is not broken the wire will stay in play while the lock cylinder is being removed.
Do you have an approved method to reset the timing of the key cylinder to the actuator rack? I rebuilt my 1996 column and I think I have the gear off a tooth or the bearing plate positioned wrong. I have to fight it to get it out and it doesn't feel correct. Everything works but it definitely is harder to RR cylinder now.
Hello great video, I was able to get the lock cylinder out but the tab on the end of it broke off inside the steering column. Causing it to be stuck in run position even when the key is in the off, acc position and with the key out. So my question is how do I get the broken piece out so I can Install the new one?
Did you get an answer on how to remove that tip I've tried a magnet and it's not working
Thanks for the video. Is there anything you could do for a 2004 F 150 ignition switch? Can't find anything on that specific year and pickup models switch. Would really appreciate any help or advice and guidance. Thanks so much again. Kevin
Thank you for the tips😊
Hello sir. Great video. The ignition on my 02 f350 SD Diesel suddenly became really stiff to turn. I replaced the ignition cylinder with a new one, but it is still really stiff when turning the cylinder to start the truck...., Any suggestions?
Hey Brian - thanks for this very useful information, I will save this video since I own a Ford Windstar -
Apologies...I wanted to follow up with the fact that I did replace the power steering pump a couple months ago but unfortunately there has been air in the line so it has been making a slight whining sound for awhile....not near as bad as before the replacement though. I am taking the truck to rotate the tires next week and will bleed the lines then, but I just wanted to bring that up in case there is a correlation. Thanks.
Any tips on removing lock cylinder from 2008 fusion? No keys are available and I would like to prevent damage to wafers. I would like to be able to re key the new ignition cylinder so the door keys will be the same. Thank you for your videos!
Loved the video but can you tell me where to get the rack that attaches to the actuator and the brass gear. I'm in Canada and cannot find them.
Thx Brian, video saved me money always helpful.
I had a lock cylinder stop turning on me one very cold morning on my 00 focus. Turns out (no pun intended) the tiny Springs that push the lock bar out must have broke/shattered rendering it useless.
Found the TSB and drilled a 10 mm hole (pilot hole first) to the correct depth and location, then was able to successfully extract the cylinder!
Attohertz Yes I have done a few but what a mess it makes.
FordTechMakuloco Yes it was like new years confetti all over the place! Cobalt freeze hardened drill bits FTW.
Excuse me I have a question for you I want to replace my ignition cylinder key cause I have some problems with it but I want to know if I have to go to the dealership to reprogram the new key or new cylinder key thanks hopefully you answer
the reason I need to replace my cylinder is because the the tumblers have rusted in place and won’t even slow the key into the cylinder or let alone turn it to the run position. I would actually think that’s the main reason someone would even need to replace the cylinder so any tips on how to remove the ig cylinder without the ability to turn it and depress that ball/button that locks it in place?
Thanks man! it's the little stuff that makes it so much eayer!
I really appreciate you to upload this video,it gave me the way to help my old neighbor to fix his ford, thanks Mr.
Many thank's Feel good saving a few Bucks doing it myself. LOL "The Job went like Clock Work"
Great videos, just subbed. I have a problem though, besides being a broke college student. I popped out my cylinder, no problem, but still have the same problem! I can't turn the ignition to the off position! Amy ideas? thanks!
quick question, Ive got a 99 super duty and blinkers are not woking???. hazards work, brake lights work, everything works besides turn signals? fuses are good, wires in the column are good, relay is good and clicking. any advice besides buying a Chevy would be greatly appreciated! !
Replacing the tumbler is easy. You have any idea why though now my truck won’t crank? 2002 f250 7.3
It is not the key with the chip either??
CRAZY world question.(2009 ford edge)If I took the ECM,Ignition tumbler and transponder from a donor car and installed it in my car,,,,,WOULD IT START?(I have no clue if the cluster is involved in this scenario)
Thanks, I was lost on that 😅 all fixed up now
Thanks for the update, keep up the goog work
Any idea on how to remove the cylinder without a key? I lost mine to my 85 SVO Mustang. Also, do you know if this tip will work for my car?
Pago's Place The key must be in run otherwise you have to drill it out.
FordTechMakuloco Thank you for the great info! When I get back to the states I am going to try and pick the lock first with a set of jiggler keys I just ordered. Hopefully I will be able to get it in the run position then remove it easily without drilling.
@@pagosplace3065 Did the jiggler's work?
Hey Brian- thanks for your video's they have been good help to me.
I have a 2007 E250 4x4 van and I like it a lot!!!Your video's on parasitic drain helped me,spark plug tips and coil pack replacement. My latest problem is when I turned my ignition key back to accessory then to start, my van will start but I lost my gauges and power windows. It runs ok but no speedo. After driving a bit everything comes back on.Worked for a week and then happened again when I switched the key all the way back? Strange stuff and was wondering if the ignition switch was shorting out?
Any thoughts would be appreciated thank you..Darren
+Darren Auerbach Was your radio also dead? The way it appears is the cluster is failing and not sending the ground control to the accessory delay relay. So when it is happening it is best to check that first and work our way back from there but it seems the cluster is failing causing all of this especially since the speedo dropped out.
Yes the radio went out. That's what got my attention the first day it happened. Also the power windows stopped just as it started to downpour. However the wipers worked. Funny thing I was running errands today and right as I passed a Ford dealer it happened again.I stopped by and they won't point me in the right direction until I give them $100hr to look at it.
1990 ford bronco...won't stay in the running position..I have to make sure it is turned just right to stay running and then any bumps or movment will cause it to turn off. If i hold it foward it stays running. Is it just the cylinder? Or the copper gear..or maybe the plastic gear part? Idk?
Thank you this was a great video.
Thank you! I have a 1987 Turbo Coupe that is being more of a Thunderturd than a Thunderbird, and you’ve helped save me a bunch of time and money!
To the Thunderbird Guy.
I can’t help but tell you the WONDERFUL MEMORIES your comments brought me back to my 1977 Thunderbird that was Playboy’s
Car of The Year! I bought it off the showroom floor in 1978. Mine was one of only 7 built at the factory that were termed “Continental“ Styling! It was SO LUXURIOUS AND people loved it and gave me many compliments and questions. It had a 351 Windsor, 4 barrel carb, and was a bullet!!! But wasn’t terrible on gas, which amazed me!
I restored it and was going to keep it off the road as a collector. Several years later I fell in love with a 40 ft 4 horse living quarters, 3 axel horse trailer that was one of a kind and fit my immediate needs, so I sold it.
A year or 2 later, I was notified that the buyer never transferred the title and it was in the impound lot. I proved my bill of sale and they said it had been trashed and headed for the crusher! It broke my heart! Thanks for helping me remember all the WONDERFUL TIMES I had with that show stopper, I never should have let go of!❤️💕♥️
See my reply to you Thunderbird Guy!
@@sheilasmith1109 up til the impound part, it’s wonderful! The 77 was a big beautiful car, and amazing to be one of only seven made that way!
I know my Turbocoupe is one of a handful with its particular options, but certainly more than one of seven…and no 351 to scoot it along. The horse trailer probably/hopefully brought you many wonderful memories as well ❤️
@@sheilasmith1109 and thank you for sharing your story, it’s nice hearing there are other car lovers out there who enjoy the quirkier facts and such :)
What happens if the plastic piece and gear come out behind the ignition I have no idea how to get it back in properly and can’t find any videos on it
I've removed the lock cylinder in that as you showed in instructed but I found a black and red wire which is thin but coming from a little black box under my steering is that in part for possibly the past key or was it something installed or disconnected that may not been by Ford but the prior owner
?
Thanks for the help. I just had someone break into my 1995 F-150 and they completely shattered my lock cylinder. It should be a easy replacement now. with a little expedited shipping from Rock Auto. If you've got any other tips on replacing this on a 95 F-150 XL, please let me know. Thanks again, - Andrew
+Andrew Soltis No they are pretty simple on these.
All I have to do is push in the clutch and one of my vice grips and my truck starts within the first couple tries , it’s a 89 f350crew cab long bed dually and it got 72k miles so far but I still like it great for hauling hay
I have an old Ford my kids lost the key what do you think the best way is to take that out without messing up the steering column I've tried using other keys to wiggle it and it does not even work
Shouldn't need to say this, but we forgot, so make sure you unhook your battery before
What if you cant turn the key to the run position i have 98 ford mustang someone tried to steal and damaged the ignition and key wont turn
Travis Allen Same here but with a 94 Ford Ranger. Someone did the same thing when trying to steal it, there’s a broken key inside and doesn’t turn to run position.
The only people that disliked this video are ones that do not drive Fords
I envy those people 😂
Excellent tutorial! Keep em coming.
Thanks for the video. I have a 1972 lincoln continental mark IV. And need an ignition switch but apparently its difficult to find. I even thought about replacing entire column as I have some wobble. Is there a new column that would fit?
On a vehicle without PATS (mainly earlier models) is it possible to key the vehicle itself because the tumbler code is engraved or written on the lock cylinder isnt it ???
Hey Brian: on my 1970 Mark 111 ign switch will not turn forward to a start pos... mobile locksmith said you must remove switch he could not make a key ...just got this car with 8K org miles on it was in storage many years... no keys... now his boss came out and he tried to cut a new key with no luck... now how can i remove the switch ??? i do have a key now that will only go into reverse meaning ACC pos... i pulled the steering wheel and i cannot see that pin hole and i think i must drill out unit... what do you know on this...
Thanks it helped me out, I have a 96 E150, Took me not even 5 minutes.
I have a 86 Ford. Is it the same method to replacing the key ignition? Or do I have to take the steering wheel off? Thanks in advance.
I got the ignition release button pushed and can get some play but it is not fully released. Tried to lever it out and may have busted a bit the plastic cowling that the key enters first, and that prevents the shroud from being removed. I was way over-charged for replacing it and I wanted to verify that it had in fact been replaced. F250 2000
R. Brooke Fox Just make sure whatever you are sticking up in there is small enough to fully release it otherwise it should come right out.
Well, yes, I pretty sure it was small enough. I had taken off the low fuse box cover so I had a clear view. Thank you, FordTechMakuloco. I worked it in and out as far as it would go quite a few times and could plainly feel and see when it was released partially, at least, or not.
FordTechMakuloco What secures the plastic cowling that the key enters first, and that prevents the shroud from being removed? Is that just a friction fit? I found a spare in the truck after the suspicious work was done so I have a replacement in hand if I break the one that is in place as I try to remove the ignition cylinder.
R. Brooke Fox I think it just snaps on. The lower shroud should still come off with lock cylinder in place 3 Phillips head screws and it will be all open.
Thank you, FordTechMakuloco. I did get it out, and the cylinder is the same as the one you show, with the orange plastic parts, etc. Your link to Amazon was not direct to F250 2000 but on navigating there, the cylinder shown was different. I ask if it is original equip as I want to verify that my guys in fact replaced it or if it is the original or exactly like it. Is the one you show orig or a replacement? Can you give me a link for it or a brand? Many thanks.

Great Video. I hate to ask in an unrelated video, but could you do explain the timing chain tensions issues on the 98?-early production 2003 4.6 used in the Crown/Grand Marquis/Town Cars. I know that Ford technician made marks on the timing covers meaning different things. The marks are written with a paint pencil and they are typically an X with 2 or 3 dots above the X. I might try and find an image. I have 1-95 Town Car 236,000 trouble free other than a blend door, air ride, and a few power window gears. I have an 01 Crown Vic that has needed a blend door and still has the original total plastic intake manifold. I also have an 03 GMQ that has had the cooling fan replaced "radiator fan" and I have 2 2003 Town Cars that have not had any issues. I also have a 1990 F -150 300 straight 6 that is bullet proof. You can see I'm a Ford Guy, but I do have one GM car, a 81 Oldsmobile Diesel. Thanks
81 Olds diesel sweet! I don't know of any issues with timing chains back then. All of that mess started with the 3v engines 2004 or newer. If they are failing now I would say they are from age. If you are talking the two dots on the camshaft sprockets yes those are the timing marks for the cams.
try this for timing chain info

Can you help I've got a a you falcon that I've got foreign objects stuck in the ignition barrel and I can't get the key in all the way,

Thank a lot. This is exactly what I was looking for.
