Can't believe this was 21 years ago. Players today do no play with this intensity. I remember back in 2003-2006, you can find players at about 80% of the handball courts in NYC proper. Now thanks to the smartphone era there may be about 2% to 5% of handball courts with active, serious players. I miss the days back then. Everyone played hard.
-It's a different intensity. We are in a sensitivity age across all sports and media, not just handball. Durso nailed it when he said everyone wants to be the good guy and it's even more true today. Bad behavior in handball matches is on RUclips for everyone to watch and make comments. Players like Tywan and Tavo are the model for A and aspiring A players who want to maintain a high level of sportsmanship and let their games do the talking. Doesn't mean they play any less hard than Durso or Emmitt did. -Communication apps like facebook, messenger, and whatsapp have made "rep your park" handball obsolete. It's all about coordination now, knowing where and what time players are going.
i got this dvd myself...if it gets removed i'll be glad to upload it myself...thanks a lot for sharing angel!,....... and you are right, this documentary is so under rated it would be stupid not to let it get out there from any perspective........this is such EXCELLENT work why not show it?.
I knew all these guys, Angel was my mentor too, ... wow... Used to play at West 4th, Newtown, 78th Park, Edison, Hoover, Coney Island, 106, Zerega, Ozone Park...Missing lots more guys... Those were the days... Then 9-11 happened and changed everything for me. I still love Handball and NYC.
When will a knew film be made? The game has changed so much and has come a long way, it would be nice to see what it has become and where it is going! The world needs to see more of this sport and the beautiful thing it is.
Best game I ever played was in McFadden's about 25 years ago . I actually had Buddy point game. He tied it up and beat me 25 to 23. Best game I ever played and Buddy and I being good friends he praised me by saying that it was a great effort. Buddy is and was a gentleman and I will never forget how excited I was at almost beating him!! LOL
I agree with Doc that I wouldn't pay to see or here things they say and do. Antics that are unprofessional, but I do believe there are ways to buildup the game, and even create environments that protect players who dive for the and overall play hard, its still quite the Game. What's come about the game since these Documentaries and are their more historical doc's to see? Podcasts and even online radio station. also announcing tournaments in the tri state area or different parts of the country?
Hard to believe this was my World 15 years ago up till a couple of years ago...I know many of this "Baller's" , played against the best and on occasion, pulled out a nice win.Miss this game terribly.
Buddy Gantt, was right. 13 years later handball still didnt go no where, its sad but true. A sport you dedicate yourself to but cant make a real profession, carrier or whatever
Yet people still play tennis,, basketball, soccer dance, running and summer make money, maybe people just like to play a sport, one that is one on one, very intense, and very physically and mentally demanding !!!
Our once-every-3-years tradition has come again, where we come back to this video and say "so Power, about Rookie not being #1 anymore by 2002.........."
@@kobiebabb9419 Fact: Rookie is a 7X King. Fact: Your claim against Rookie's 7 crowns making him #1 all-time is one banner year, over 20 years ago. Sealed with namecalling. Fact: I didn't call you any names. I was being lighthearted and you were great too in your day but if Rookie being the GOAT by most if not all of handball is still that much of a contention point for you then taking it out on me is not going to change people's minds. There's still time and Rookie isn't playing singles anymore, stay in there and do more than he did. Or find some other path to happiness because life is too short to hold on to grudges from over 20 years ago. Have a blessed day. I didn't mean any disrespect to your resume.
Can play handball every day for 20 years and that does not mean you will become an A player....Very small % of A players in the Handball circle...Either you are good enough or you are not...
I remember back in the 70's when buddy used to play against Rubin Gonzalez then the two best players .Rubin would win most of the times he (Rubin) went on to be one of the top ten all time best players in rackedball a professional sport. Unfortunately sometimes great athletes choose the wrong sport.
Rookie had such a great opportunity to make some serious money but instead, chose to play money games everyday. Same thing with the other top players like buddy, joe and angel back in the day. These guys were the best at their specific game (big blue, small, pink etc) and just didnt know how to cash it in.
jessesam Rookie used to play 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar games on any given day. The problem with him being so good is, you start giving crazy handicap matches. Rookie was so good in his prime, he could some some "A" players left to two. Really hard for someone to just want to go up to him, play him for 100 and just give their money away to him. He has to give spots. I used to go to west 4th plenty of times during1992-1999 and saw rookie play mostly 5-10 dollar games. I would say his average day was about 70 dollars give or take. Sure there were times he played for a few hundred at a time but you also have to factor in those 5 dollar games he played also. There was a point he just couldn't get many decent cash games. He told me once ha made about 500,000 in total throughout his handball career. average that amount with the number of years he was playing cash games say 25 years thats 20k a year. 20k a year is 54 dollars a day. I said 70... close enough :-)
Chose?...What do you mean?....How else was he to make money playing handball?...He played money games and also tournaments...Not his fault that Handball did not offer a lot of money
It hard for me to play for free too. anytime a game for free I feel like I just need to pratice my shoots cuts weak hand. Hit the ball to the better player all the time. just to get better, I really can care less if I win.
It was a good time in handball and he is not selling the video anymore. he should let it be. and it is good advertisement for him anyway. plus i know everyone this video would like to speak to him personally
It shouldn't! There are no places to get the video and you can't buy it anywhere. plus i did not make you remove my king of the court video bangalirussian.

You must be from the 70's lol
Rookie is the greatest one wall big blue ball handball player ever, the years of dominance is undeniable.

This documentary has aged VERY nicely. Absolutely well done.
Ikr, especially Buddy's takes at 20:23 and 22:37

This was a great documentary on one wall handball, however there were many great one wall handball players missing. Thank you for putting it on Utube.
Not in 2000, this was it. Timbo, Tavo, etc didn't exist. I remember when Timbo was a wee C Player at West 4th.
angel marquez is my uncle and i am dam proud to have him as my uncle.he is to me the best in handball.love u uncle.u have teached me alot in life.

If Adam Sandler makes a Handball movie I would love to see Chris Rock play Rookie 😂

Stop your noise. I’ve been over handball since 2001 with no regrets. If there was a future in it, history would be different. Have a good life.

Durso, Emmitt, Angel didn't complain every point? The current complainers are emulating the past complainers, they didn't invent that style.
These guys are all dead by now.
Other than Buddha and Morris I believe most if not all are alive and kicking. It's only 22 years ago.
