Sewing with knits is not scary! I promise! It is such a forgiving material and looks great on everyone! I have been wanting to make a black maxi skirt for awhile now with some great Modal black knit fabric I purchased last fall! Here is my creation!

Fabric Requirements (Knits are usually 60 inches wide, so you need less yardage)
My skirt was 39 inches across the bottom, and 39 inches long. (before sewing)
So, 1 and 1/4 yard is enough if it is the proper width.
To give you an idea, I am a size 6 and 5'9... usually a size medium. My skirt is extra long because I wanted to wear it slightly high waisted. If you like to wear your skirts lower, make sure you measure at that spot.
To get an accurate waist measurement, measure around the part of your waist you would like the skirt to sit. Use that measurement plus 1/2 inch to insure a comfortable fit.
My black fabric is a jersey knit with modal and lots of stretch. Here are some similar items I have found from one of my favorite online knit sources.

I'm just getting ready to enter the arena of apparel sewing, so this tutorial couldn't have come at a better time! Looks great! Thanks a bunch!
That's gorgeous!
Lurve it. Simple to make n so nice!
Nice & easy!
Good job
Love it
A nice tutorial but you must not forget to tell people to start and finish sewing at the seam otherwise there will be a knot where it should not be and it would not look nice. I learned this from Meesha. I would also like to say about when you were cutting out the material for the maxi skirt, why did you not double the material and thus cut out the front and back all at the same time as this will save you a lot of time when cutting the maxi skirt out! Other than these two things I really did enjoy your tutorial. I too am a beginner, but like I said above, I learned all of this from Meesha who was a fashion designer but was sadly murdered by her ex-boyfriend on May 14th 2014. Please go and visit her RUclips Channel, which thankfully, is still up and running.
Do u have to flip the skirt right side out or no because I am using a patterned fabric
Never mind I figured it out
You say forgiving a lot of times
She is trying to ease the worry of new sewers
The first maxi skirt I ever made was nearly identical in instruction but I made it too big because I didn't fully realize how much stretch the fabric would truly have :( BUT now that you made a tutorial I'm inspired to try again because I can't find maxi skirts that are right for me in stores because I'm too short. I'm a beginner sewer btw and I love your videos :)
You're adorable and SO talented! Thanks for the video!
That was awesome, I tried free hand to do this and I had uneven sides, I never thought about using a skirt that I already have as a guide. Thanks for posting
I love this, I will have to try to make this myself when I get a sewing machine. I just took a sewing class this whole semester and I am thinking about doing some sewing videos when I get a sewing machine. My last project I learned how to sew pajama pants and keychains. I've made a pillow case, jewelry case, envelope pillow case, totebag, cover button, and table runner.
the easiest tutorial I've watched yet! thank you!
Did you wash the fabric before sewing it?
Just curious why a ball point pin? I used a regular pin and it seemed fine and I had no pulls. Also I noticed you didn't use an elastic. I'm curious as to why because with the stretch I'd be afraid it would eventually stretch out to much.
Thanks in advance!!
OMG I think I can do this, I'm quite excited! ;)
I'm going to make this skirt using your pattern, out of black stretchy polar fleece. Am going to keep it in a slim line, so it fits close to the body (not tight, just not loose and bulky looking). With fleece-lined tights and boots, it will be great in winter! And easy to travel with.
U make it look so easy! Love your vids, this project will be definitely attempted. please continue with uploads of crochet projects if u can.
Don't worry! I will still do crochet, it just takes a lot longer to make and develop the projects!
I love this tutorial:)
Looks fab cant wait to try this out, new summer skirt. How would I alter the sizes so I could make one for my daughters
I will try it your way, but I am very scared of Knit fabrics. I can sew all most any thing but knit. Wish me luck, and thank you for your lesson
Can you make a duct tape challenge?
I defiantly want to try this. i have been in a crocheting mood cause of this cold weather, making lots of hats and scarfs and not im coloring, but i really want to start sewing again all i really do is sew holes up in cloths.
Thank you for this.
I love this idea. By any chance do you have any videos in altering clothes or something along those lines ? Thank you. Keep up the good work :)
Love it! I have a request ... can u make a video on how to make your own leggings!?
Great job
Look so easy! Hope I manage to do the same great job :) thanks a lot for this tutorial :)
i like the way you teach very simple and detail i learn a lot thanks.
That's a nice looking skirt. 😀 Good job!
I love your videos! :) all you do look so easy and perfect! :)
I love this tutorial but am confused on something. You said you made the waist part 12" which is slimmer than your waist. But in the instructions you typed, you said use your normal measurement plus 1/2" for comfy fit. I don't understand how much this stretches...seems as though 12" would squeeze me to death considering my waist is 27" around. Am I missing something?
There are 2 pieces of fabric that are sewn together, so each one is 12 inches - so that would be 24 inches total, plus the stretch and I wear it higher on my waist which is a little smaller. Does that make sense?
Yes I thought about it more after my comment LOL Duh to me!
Looks fab cant wait to try it out. New summer skirt
Hi there! Love this tutorial but I have a question. When you're tucking the waistband into the skirt should the wristband be right side out?
Waistband. Not wristband. Sorry.
i made this skirt. i love it
