    Brilliant routine by two of my favorite actors of all time. I heard Cagney did this on two conditions: 1) It wasn't announced and no one mentioned it in the reviews and 2) He wasn't paid anything for it, he did it as a favor, because Eddie Foy took him in as a child performer. True Class

    What's notable about the old time performers was how versatile they were. They could dance, sing and do either comedy or drama like Cagney. It was the stiff competition of vaudeville, burlesque and the '' legitimate '''theatre that forced you to be multi-talented and they brought all that experience with them to their Hollywood films.

      yeah, way different to today. But I guess Hollywood and the whole film industry starting away from all that in the '50s and by the '70s the transformation was complete. I used to hate watching films like these with my mom, who loved them. Now when I see them, it's like beholding a piece of art. Maybe I'm maturing? haaha

      My top goes to Bobby Darin. Cagney a giant and an original but not as multi-faceted as Darin or Davis. I choose Bobby over Sammy in a very tight race. I love both as singers, give Sammy the edge as a dancer. I go with Bobby as a musician because he wrote and composed and I feel was stronger on his instruments and integrated them more into his performances. Sammy only lived to 64 but still had very full career. Bobby only 37 still had a lot in front of him.

    The sad thing is we will never see talent like this ever again. there were so many greats it is impossible to list them. James Cagney was so elegant and seemed to float. Bob was great also but not as good as James. There are no actors today that I will not watch. I have tried but they are so devoid of talent,. I ave decided that any movie made since 1980/1990 are rubbish.

    This recreation of an actual event with Eddie Foy from the movie "The seven little foys" shows one thing to a professional dance man like myself. Cagney was dancing with ease, after many years of practice, it was like second nature to him, but (as much as I love Bob Hope) Hope's dancing seemed strained, almost an effort to do the same steps as Jimmy was doing. Cagney is much lighter on his feet, and seems to really enjoy the routine, better than Bob!

    • @curtlewis2795
      @curtlewis2795 5 лет назад +1

      @both Philip Halpenny & Treknician. While it's true Cagney is the better dancer, I think you're over-stating your points. As Trek points out, this is from a bio-pic of Eddie Foy Sr w/Hope playing Foy. As such, he is dancing in the Foy style. What you see as Hope "straining" is, I believe, rather Hope keeping in character, dancing with Foy's more herky-jerky method. By the same token, Cagney is dancing in that nearly trade-marked stiff-legged style of George M. Cohan (whom he is portraying in this clip) which he had earlier perfected for Yankee Doodle Dandy. Again, we all agree that Cagney was the better dancer, although most of our generation never knew Hope could dance at all. I do not agree in the slightest with Philip's statement that Hope is "embarrassing" here. To the contrary, he demonstrates that he is far more talented than our generation ever knew -- and, to say the least, more talented than any of the so-called "entertainers" on the scene today

    • @philiphalpenny9761

      Cagney, on the set of Ragtime, mentioned to Biographer Richard Schickel, that he would have loved to have done more dancing on screen. In truth, though, his marvelously choreagraphed movements were always manifest, in his dramas and comedies also. As with Buster Keaton, James Cagney is among the most irreplaceable of stars...
