  • These are some of the ~65 Pacific Harbor Seal pups at The Marine Mammal Center in mid-May 2010. All became separated from their mothers and would most likely have died if they were not rescued. They're between 1 and 2 months old and are very fragile as they have weak immune systems. These particular pups have progressed from drinking formula and fish mash. They're now being hand-fed herring. The next step will be to teach them to eat herring while swimming.
With continually reduced availability of remote beaches for seals to haul out on, it isn't surprising that we are receiving increased reports of harbor seal pup strandings. A mother will leave her pup on a beach while she forages for food. When she returns, if there are humans or dogs near the pup the mother will stay in the water waiting for them to leave. Sometimes the wait is too long.
If you see a pup on a beach, the best thing to do is to keep people and dogs away from it (by at least 500 feet). If its a beach in California and you suspect the pup is in distress or has been separated from its mother, call the Marine Mammal Center Hotline to report it. The numbers are:
415-289-SEAL for San Francisco Bay, Anchor Bay and Fort Bragg regions
831-633-6298 for the Monterey Bay region
805-771-8300 for the Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo regions

Unfortunately, you would have trouble keeping a healthy marine environment in your home - unless you're a mermaid.
