For those curious about how the .224 stacks up to the 22-250 hotrod, watch this video. I think once you watch this video you'll come to fully appreciate what the .224 is capable of. It's easy to beat up on new things saying it's already been done, but this is slightly different. The .224 can do more out of a short action AR15 than a .22-250 can do out of a longer action and the .224 spanks it past 850 yards. ruclips.net/video/vkHqm4V6Z6s/видео.html
I've been trying to follow this new cartidge as much as I can and I can honestly say that like you Tim I am excited about it. I'm waiting to hear more when they get everything fine tuned and I've been eyeing the new Savage MSR they are releasing in this chambering. The only info I haven't seen yet is what type of optic would be best for this caliber, would reticles calibrated or tuned for .223/5.56 work with it or would it need a dedicated reticle?
Also by the way the 6.8 SPC was originally intended for the Army to have a more potent round out of short barreled rifles. It was never intended to be a long-range cartridge.
Rifles First it's completely different than the 7.62 by 39. Like I said it was made specifically to shoot in sbr's 7.62 by 39 doesn't work well and 7 inch barrels it throws huge flames and has piss poor ballistics. The 762 needs at least a barrel length of 10 in.
6.8 was meant for 0-500 yard engagements from a military standard 14.5" rifle without substantial increase in recoil or loss of magazine capacity. It does this fairly well but not perfectly. It's a very misunderstood cartridge much like the 6.5 Grendel. It packs the power most hunters look for with half the recoil of a .308, and comes in the best modern sporting rifle ever devised so, ya know. Buy it.
TY Mac for adding publicity to this new bullet! I'm not being sarcastic, I want as much hype for this as possible, I want this to become a standard caliber available in as many places as possible with plenty of manufacturers to keep prices competitive. I love the idea of this caliber and am building a JP rifle in it in 2018! Long live long range!
That’s the idea of slapping a cool name on something. Association makes us think it’s cool regardless of how it actually performs unless we’re careful.
AZNwannabe06 For sure you got to stay informed I am well aware of that, it's exactly why Cadillacs cost more, why Jordan basket ball shoes cost 500 to 600$, & etc its the name.
Holy crap. 1) I want that black and blue combo rifle so bad. Lol. 2) I couldn't believe my ears when Tim said that the rifles had threads under the muzzle brakes. I thought that the tan one (the one they were using the can on) had threads, and the black one was just an all-in-one barrel/brake combo like I've seen before. DAM those are some tight tolerances. I can't even see the line between barrel and brake on the black rifle (then again, it is a video; maybe it's easier to see in real life). Great job JP!
Glad you mentioned us reloader's! I am getting pretty excited about this baby. I was really holding back on the Creedmoor. Glad I did! For me it's a 223 killer from what I have seen so far and I was looking to get something else to chamber in my AR platform. Thanks Guys!
Really need to leave sweden for the states! Perfect content as always Tim (hope to try that round some day). Supporting you against RUclipss attempts to shut your channel down
psst there's always Switzerland. get a private guard license and then you pretty much can import select fire without anyone complaining unlike here. But we'd love you to come to the States. Go for my good Utah ppl! Hoorah!
Thanks guys! I really like these early reviews. Some people are missing the point... Guns are for a lot more than killing people or large animals! I have been searching forever for a rifle that will make nice small groups at 800 to 1000 yards and not either break the bank, or beat me to death if I want to shoot a couple hundred rounds. Precision shooters need development like this and I'm personally excited by the .224 Valkyrie (Valk). Not to mention, varmint hunting! 6.5 Creed is great, if you don't mind having a bruise on your shoulder, spending a small fortune on ammo, and replacing barrels. .338 LPM and .300 MW are also great, but they deliver way more energy than I need for punching a hole in a target and talk about expensive... This new caliber shows a lot of promise for us budget constrained long range precision shooters! I can hardly wait!
So why did you not seek out the 224 Grendel or 6mm grendel....like the rest of precision shooters have done instead of waiting for an inferior corporate offering (6.5 Creed also inferior corporate offering)
Guys , I really appreciate your review on this cartridge. For well over 7 months now I have been waiting and searching any information on this new cartridge and have been blown away with what I see. I see almost infinite opportunities with this new design. I really do, truly appreciate this video and now that I am subscribed, I look forward to more reviews and information in other calibers in the future. #PhenominalJob
Love the channel! 👍🏼. Just have to remind others of Hornady’s 6mm HAGAR, which Carl Bernosky made famous (in my eyes) in 2011 when he won the the National Championships with it, in an AR 15 platform. I believe the HAGAR nicely fills that gap 22 plinkster spoke about. The HAGAR uses the same 6.8 spc bolt face and pushes pills, as heavy as 105grn, as fast as 2800 fps. I hate to say it, but it looks look like the HAGAR trumps the Valkyrie’s ballistics. The only problem I see with the HAGAR is that I hasn’t seemed to gain popularity. No factory ammo produced, but Hornady has made runs of brass. Thanks
He is officially sponsored by Federal, that's probably why. :D That and he's sponsored by the people that make his hat, jacket, shirt, pants, boots, underwear, socks, toothpaste, wig (he's bald) and Toyota.
If the price is going to be very simular to 5.56 than maybe this round may take the place of some peoples 5.56 rifles. It's essentially a 223 on steroids. High velocity light bullet was the whole thing with 5.56. This takes that formula and just turns it up higher. Only thing that will kill it in that role is if there are any issues getting 30 rounds mags. It probably will never happen but it's a interesting thought. If I can get 30 round mags and it really is prices similar to 5.56 I'd consider building a rifle for it. I've always wanted to build an MK12 upper.
Even at point blank that's a 90-100 grain bullet and that bullet will hold its energy to 3, 4, 5, 6 -1000+ I really like the grendel but this round's likely to win out.
I will not make any predictions but I am curious to see how popular this round gets. I've never been into alternative rounds for the AR15 since they are usually just fads that die off. last round I was excited for was the 6.8SPC and you see where that is now lol. I still think the 6.8 is a great combat round but for us normies it's a crappy option due to price and lack of components. I can see .224V being a fun round and who knows maybe it'll prove it's self as a good medium game round. I'd like to see some ballistic gel tests of standard bullets weights and maybe some slightly lighter bullets coming out of a 16" barrel. Could be good for self defense.
Wow! That really is impressive performance guys. I would love to see more long range with this sweet new cartridge. Great job guys. Can't wait for more
wow, very cool round! this definitely peaks my interest! i cant wait to see what the future holds for the .224! thanks for the video mac and .22 plinkster!
From what I have seen from these long range cartridges is that they all seem to require barrels over 18". Do any of these show any advantage over M262 clone out of a 14.5" tube?
+dbmail545 I didn't give you any velocity numbers for a 14.5" barrel, and you won't find any specific for that length, because one doesn't exist for the Valkyrie yet. Larue does have an 11.5" barrel for it though. Now Hornady makes a 75gr load with propellant specifically for 11.5" barrels with a muzzle velocity of 2321ft/s and muzzle energy of 897ft/lbs, but the Federal .224 Valkyrie 75gr load clocks over 2400ft/s from the Larue barrel; that's +960ft/lbs of energy. That's nearly 100 feet per second better even using powders with a burn rate intended for longer barrels. With the burn rate optimized for an SBR, it would go even faster.
ostiariusalpha So... The load optimized for an SBR goes slower out of an SBR than the standard loading? Because that's what you just said. I'm going to wait until someone who isn't selling the cartridge gives us velocity numbers before I make a verdict. But 6.8 and 6.5 are still going to be better out of short barrels, and I'd imagine the Valkyrie out of a 11.5" tube is going to be even worse than 5.56 in the muzzle blast department.
G9 103gr @2775fps out of the 6.5 grendel has a bc of .554 and with 200yd 0 drops 309.7 in and has only 79 inches of drift with 10mph cross wind ... and almost supersonic to 1400 and this is at sea level
I dunno, it just seems like a another flash in the pan round. I guess I'm just jaded at this point. If I want a 0-300 yard gun I go 5.56 if I want 300-600y I go .308, if I want a 1000y plus then theres a plethora of options for that.
Two things about this cartridge come to mind. First, the case head diameter isn't ideally suited to the AR 15 bolt, and I wouldn't expect particularly long barrel life. Otherwise a very cool cartridge.
Great vid but you can't shoot three 100yd groups only one of which is sub Mao then state that that it's a sub Mao gun. Surely having two of the three groups shooting over an moa is more representative.
This cartridge is pointless in a bolt gun. Get a 22-250 or 220 swift with a barrel twist for whatever weight range projectiles you want to shoot. This round is only worth something being fed out of AR mags. Other than that ballistically there's several rounds that do what this does, and better.
I suspect JP's prototype rifles are probably more accurate than many manufacturers established factory guns (wish I could afford one). I'm impressed with the Valkyrie, how can you not be, but I got into the 6.5 Grendel because it offered fantastic BC's (not too far below the Valkyrie) and because it offered a larger caliber and heavier bullet than the 5.56 that is still supersonic at 1000 (albeit with more drop/drift than the Valkyrie), doubled as a hunting rifle and is still a great long range target gun in an AR15 with low recoil. I knew that it was just a matter of time before someone applied the same basics as the Grendel using a .22 caliber bullet. No surprise the smaller, lighter bullet can produce an even higher BC than the Grendel and less drift/drop. I don't see the Valkyrie taking the place of the Grendel unless your prey are smaller animals or you're a target shooter only. As a prairie dog or predator gun the Valkyrie definitely takes top billing for long distance work. In my opinion, for someone who hunts whitetail and larger game with their Grendel, the Valkyrie makes a fantastic addition to the family but isn't a replacement. For folks who hunt whitetail (assuming you live somewhere it's legal to hunt deer with a .22 caliber centerfire) and smaller game and want to use the same rifle for long range target shooting the Valkyrie looks like an excellent choice. I definitely won't be swapping my Grendel for a Valkyrie, I don't hunt prairie dogs or coyotes and the Grendel is a better choice for hunting everything else (in it's class) so for me it would be a paper puncher only which, for me, is hard to justify the cost. I predict that the Valkyrie is going to become extremely popular, no rise and fall for this one. I could be wrong but with the backing from Federal and the growing interest in long distance shooting the Valkyrie offers an incredible amount of benefits for what seems like will be an affordable cartridge to shoot. I'm looking forward to seeing how the final commercial cartridges perform in the kinds of affordable rifles most of us shoot. Thanks for the great video, it's an impressive caliber for the AR15 size platform.
Most hot rod 22caliber cartridges are not designed to shoot the heavier projectiles. 22-250 has more potential with a custom barrel twist and adjusted leads but otherwise 22-250 won't shoot >77gr worth a crap. Not to mention this cartridge is tiny and can fit in smaller actions all while burning less powder
90 gr, I would just be curious on a custom reload with a 115 grain pill. With a good powder, primer. Even some 223 grain sizes 77, 69, 62. Been following this new caliber since I caught wind of it.
Robert Long No. It will never happen. The impetus behind the design fits as described in the video. A cartridge that can fit and work in the AR-15 size action and maintains supersonic velocity out to 1300y. The needs of the Military do not reflect the desires of the general long range comp/hunter.
I have an AR15 with a 16" barrel that I can bang on plates to 800 yards with. 24.3 grains of Varget under a 69gr SMK. I don't doubt for a second that I could add another 4 or 500 yards to that with this round when hand rolling. The idea that it uses standard AR lowers means I could get into this for a lot cheaper. And the biggest deal is that I could go long range shooting for cheap. Really cheap compared to other bigger options. Plus I already have the suppressors for it too. I am keeping an eye on this one. I will let other people work out the bugs first but this is on my radar. As is a 6.5CM bolt gun.
i agree i can rap steel all day with 223/556 to 6 or 700yds. love the idea of 900 plus for almost same price per round. just ordered a alpha shooting sports custom upper. guarantee sub moa. saw some vids very impressive . so far. later maybe a 6.5 cm
For some strange reason I’m now getting the urge to build a retro m16a1 in .224 Valkyrie (with a heavy profile barrel though so not totally pure in the look).
How does it do out of a 14.5-16” barrel? Any ballistic gel tests coming? This round has to perform well out of short barrels that are popular to be successful in my opinion.
Honestly for me what interests me in this cartridge is the idea of getting heavier (ie 80 grain and up) projectiles moving at similar speeds to 55 grain 5.56. I’d almost like to see if hand loads with 62 grain green tips loaded into the .224 would be able to punch through level three armor in one shot instead of the five or ten we deal with now.
I love the channel and think this caliber is going to be awesome. The video got a little too commercialized for MAC. I guess that's the price you pay to be allowed on the bleeding edge of something new.
Looks like a great ultra long range plinking tool / toy. great for varmints! But Ar platform for deer - well that 6.8 spc and 6.5 Grendel still look pretty good to me. I quite like the 6.8 for an all around cartridge at woods terrain ranges. just my 2 cents.
Plinkster is sponsored by Federal and that is who developed this round. So basically it is an ad. Also notice that Plinkster say nothing even remotely negative while MAC seems a bit more honest.
Dave is openly sponsored by Federal. I'm not sponsored. Dave had early access t the guns and ammo and asked if I would like to see and shoot them. I said yes... I mean, what else could I say?
You said the same thing any real gun guy would. I personally have no issue with Dave being sponsored because he doesn't try and hide it, he is honest about it. It was nice seeing your thoughts on the round because you are not sponsored and still like it, and that is really saying something for a new AR round.
Was wondering why Robert Whitley 224AR did not come up. Really MAC go to the competitive shooters and see whats going on, if you had 224V would not be breaking news.
What difference does it make if he's sponsored. The product speaks for itself. And a guts gotta make a living. I wish someone would sponsor me. I could use some ammo.
There seems to be 4 guys that show up to gun channel RUclips comments. The first is the dude who practically proposes marriage to the content creator and gushes over everything and anything said. The next guy understands the true depravity of capitalism and charges the content creator with being a lowly paid shill, parasitically sucking off the teets of his corporate overlords. The next guy has already just spent his last two paychecks on something else, and is desperately trying to convince himself that the above topic is pointless and/or useless. Why? Because like the gun hipsters they are, they need you to know they had everything figured out long before this video aired. Lastly, there is me, who just shits on everyone! Long live RUclips commenters! There could be no better window into the psychological makeup of the general public than this forum.
Awesome video and it was great to see it at Young's. Precision AR's can be a little fickle on technique, those groups could be easily tightened if you stop gripping the grip, fully relax your shoulder (zero tension, think dead meat on a counter top) and trigger on your respiratory pause... do that and you horizontal and vertical fliers will be gone.
Groups weren’t all that impressive....especially out of a JP rifle. Prototype or not....fairly obvious JP and federal gave you two the “script”. When Dave says if it does what they claim as far as accuracy.....what did the claim? Surely they didn’t say oh Its a $2k 1”AR.....or as overly said/sold....MSR...I’m betting they initially told you its a 1/2” gun 😁 TBD when real production stuff starts hitting the streets I guess. Ballistics are promising however.
What dbm is required for the 224? Same dbm as the 6.5 Grendel? Aside: the 224 still will not qualify for use on big game in WA & about 10 other states. .243" (6 mm) minimum required.
You should still be sold on it. the .224 isn't going to take down an elk or big game. .224 is a varmit round/paper puncher. I' know Miltary Arms killed a deer with it at 100ish yds, but I think the Grendel is a much better hunting set up for the ar15
Jared Kattner & Brett Wilson: you both are correct, but you are also missing the big picture. With the .224 you're getting a lot more performance in the "AR15 PLATFORM." The Creed requires the AR10 platform, and is much more expensive than the .308 Thus, if I do decide to upgrade to the AR10 platform, it will be in .308 and not the 6.5 Creed. The .308 is more plentiful, cheaper, and just as effective as the Creed up to about 800 yards. If I truly planned on shooting a 1000 yards, or farther, I would then purchase the 6.5 Creed. In real life scenarios, whether hunting big game, or your fellow man in a combat situation, 1000 yard shots are the exception, not the norm.
A quick look on Midway USA showed really only Match Bullets at a 80 to 90 grain weight. I wonder if there are some good hunting bullets available in heavier weights.
Jared Davis if you don't suck you can take an elk or moose with 5.56. Remember, the 1957 world record grizzly was killed by a grandmother with a .22LR. That shit head in into the wild killed a moose with a .22lr.
Military Arms Channel...too bad Texas deer are like small dogs compared to a northern deer! I don't doubt though that with proper shot placement it would be fine.
That is an accurate rifle. I don't need a rifle that shoots out past 300 yards. So I will stick with the 5.56. I may improve my AR15 for longer shots, but again just out to 300 yards is fine for me. Great shooting Plinkster!
Ranier has had barrels selling for quite some time, and the brass isn't magic. Its basically 6.8SPC brass necked down to .224 projectiles. Drawing the case up in QuickDESIGN is simple enough. Given the case capacity, and working pressure, typical 5.56 friendly powders work. Accurate 2495 is generally my go to. QuickLOAD projections show a 90gr SMK can hit the range of 2750fps from a 24" barrel with very, very little work. Muzzle velocity from 16" barrels is still very respectable as well, in the range of 2450 to 2550fps depending on how you load it. Something like Accurate 2200 or 2015 provide decent velocity with a slightly reduced charge volume without dropping working pressure. Point being everything involved here is already a known quantity. The only unknown is whether or not companies will start making a wider variety of heavy .224 bullets to accommodate the cartridge. Personally I'd love to see a 90gr TMK and heavier bonded bullets. Over all .224 Valk is a solid cartridge.
i was thinking about a new build as i've got a spare lower and parts sitting around. i was thinking about a 6.5, but now, I think the 224 is it. plus the name is cool :-)
A nice long commercial. Very well produced, could almost be an infomercial for the Outdoor Channel. If that was your intent, you did it and JP and Federal should be very happy with what they paid for. Good job.
When one asks for donations to support their work, it seems dishonest to make what appears to be a commercial. I stopped my $50 a month Patreon not over this, but over the way Tim began treating people. I have a hard time believing Tim found nothing wrong with the round or the rifle. If he didn’t have Patreon, making paid for commercials (or what looks like one) would be a different story.
+Stephen Smith Or perhaps the rifle and ammo actually are awesome, and you are an idiot. At any rate, your $50 didn't give you the right to dictate how Tim runs his channel, and it won't be missed.
What kind of energy does the Valkyrie carry compared to .308? Do you think this could move the .308 out of the standard tactical round for Law Enforcement/Military?
Sorry Tim, but this one really really felt like an advertisement for Federal. Id rather see you take the thing out by it self with out the guy who is sponsored by them and get your honest feed back on what this cartridge is good for and what it offers over the 6.8 SPC and the 6.5.
This had to be a paid promotion by Federal. This isnt your normal format for a video. Normally you give honest unbiased reviews but this was different. Almost sickening. Theres nothing wrong with promoting a product you believe in, but come on. Federal or JP rifles or both had to have written the script for this video.
GreazyBill maybe I'm drinking the Kool aid, but I think it's just that awesome. I've been reading the same opinions about the 224 from everyone who has gotten thier hands on it.
GreazyBill 22 plinkster is sponsored by federal and he had the rounds and rifles early so this basically was the perfect opportunity for federal to make an infomercial.
That’s your problem, not mine. Script? LOL. You don’t know anything about me. If you accuse me of doing a paid commercial again, I’ll have no choice but to enforce my asshole rule: If you’re an asshole and tell lies about me, you’re shown the door.
Paid script or not, we the consumer will either buy it or not. The next addition of Cartridges Of The World already contains many forgotten rounds. Only time will tell.
Meh, come back to me in 3-5 years. I bet this round will be dead outside of the niche competition circuit. Sorry im a pessimist about this kind of stuff, but only because im usually right. Id love to be wrong this time though.
Dave is a sponsored shooter for Federal, I'm not. Dave is the reason I got to see the .224 so early and why I got to play with it. I've since been on a deer hunt with it (video to come) and I was very happy with how it took down the Texas White Tail. The one thing that I don't like about it is that I can't use it for deer here in Indiana. I have to stick with 6.5 or 6.8.
Papa Cap just because someone is paid or sponsored doesn't make them a shill. You're only a shill if you're bought and paid for. If you actually support the product, then you're not a shill. I hate how youtube commenters use that word. None of you know what it means apparently. Is federal good? Yup. Absolutely. So what if they sponsor him.
Shill? The reason why it sounded rehearsed is this: I've been kept in the loop with the Valkyrie project by Federal, for several months now. It is my job to learn and memorize the specific data. If I can hit a prairie dog size target at 1,000 yards, 2 out of 4 times with a 15 mph cross-wind, I am sold on it. I don't care who makes it! If you think I just shoot Federal ammo because I'm their ambassador, you don't know me, or have followed my channel for a while. I have shot Federal and Cci 99% of my life. I made this video 5 and a half years ago; 3 years before Federal sent me my first round. ruclips.net/video/-i3UeEGQiHM/видео.html
He’s just mad because he ain’t you. There’s nothing “shilling” about what you do, you are primarily a trick shooter. Of course Federal sponsors you, they would be crazy not to. I can’t recall you ever denying you were sponsored. Whoop-tee-do. People have to complain about something, so you feeding your family by working an honest job seems like a great thing to complain about.
It's a JP.... Thousands of competitive shooters choose JP for a reason! Competitive shooting sports might not be everyone's cup of tea but you've got to admit it/we are the origins and birth place of some awesome stuff!
For those curious about how the .224 stacks up to the 22-250 hotrod, watch this video. I think once you watch this video you'll come to fully appreciate what the .224 is capable of. It's easy to beat up on new things saying it's already been done, but this is slightly different.
22-250 cant match up with the heavier 90gr projectile. The 224 with its 1/7 twist will own.
1:7 22-250 will hit 3k with a 90gr......not sure how the same bullet going 250fps slower spanks anything.....
I suppose I'm figuring in cost....how much for that 7 twist custom 22-250 barrel cause as far as I know, no one makes one standard.
Fake review.
22plinkster you look so cold ahahah
Dave get a fake beard and do a parody video. BTW, You guys make great video's together.
22plinkster payed actors
Brandon K 22-250 generally have too fast a twist rate to shoot the 90gr .224" pills.
Just watched your video and how you guys talk trash to each other HAHAH
Also by the way the 6.8 SPC was originally intended for the Army to have a more potent round out of short barreled rifles. It was never intended to be a long-range cartridge.

Watching this 3 years later and it's sad how everyone has soured on this round. I still love mine and the Ammo is cheaper than 6mm ARC ammo.
I agree. Planning on building one for competition
I also prefer it over the ARC
one of the best made videos on the MAC channel, I don't know why but the cinematography and editing is done so well on this video.
I want to see a comparison of the terminal ballistics between the 6.5 and .224 at 1000+ meters before I am sold on the .224.
Glad you mentioned us reloader's! I am getting pretty excited about this baby. I was really holding back on the Creedmoor. Glad I did! For me it's a 223 killer from what I have seen so far and I was looking to get something else to chamber in my AR platform. Thanks Guys!
First cartridge that has interested me in a very long time
So for 10 years you never heard of the 224Grendel???????
Really need to leave sweden for the states!
Perfect content as always Tim (hope to try that round some day).
Supporting you against RUclipss attempts to shut your channel down
Check out Utah. Its as cold as Sweden and the people are just as nice. But there are a *lot* more guns and fewer reindeer.
Come out and become an American. We would love to have you
wanna get gay married
You're welcome here homie; any one that's a fan of firearms and the Second Amedment is welcome in my book.
psst there's always Switzerland. get a private guard license and then you pretty much can import select fire without anyone complaining unlike here. But we'd love you to come to the States. Go for my good Utah ppl! Hoorah!
Great overview gents 👍🏽
Wow what a great step up in production quality for that intro with the broll! What a fantastic video Mac!
>Puts a giant muzzle brake on rifle
"Wow! It's got so little recoil!"
Maybe it's just me, but I have no brake on my 6.5 cm and I have no issue spotting my own shots at any range
First new cartridge I've been excited about
Thanks guys!
224 Valkyrie in a Mossberg MVP LC would be a slam dunk for me!
There is literally no point in having this cartridge in a bolt action.
Brian X there is "literally" no reason for this cartridge in a evil black rifle either. Because I want it is reason enough.
I’m glad that you guntube guys are doing more videos together. Pretty neat!
i got my JP .224 Valkyrie on order, Jan cant come early enough
Guys , I really appreciate your review on this cartridge.
For well over 7 months now I have been waiting and searching any information on this new cartridge and have been blown away with what I see. I see almost infinite opportunities with this new design. I really do, truly appreciate this video and now that I am subscribed, I look forward to more reviews and information in other calibers in the future.
#PhenominalJob
What an amazingly fun review!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it! Great job guys.
Thanks man! If Dave actually responded to viewers he would thank you too. But he's too big time to interact with us regular Joe's.
Military Arms Channel Merry Christmas!
Looks like young's longshot range, 224 valk would be a great long range groundhog slayer!
Congrats to 22s daughter on her first deer
Wow! Thank you!
22plinkster no problem
Another suck ass...he won’t be giving you any free shit or letting you touch his JP
Thanks
I like Plinkster but man he makes this entire video feel like an infomercial.
He is officially sponsored by Federal, that's probably why. :D That and he's sponsored by the people that make his hat, jacket, shirt, pants, boots, underwear, socks, toothpaste, wig (he's bald) and Toyota.
Military Arms Channel..
It's a very information.. Thanks
Merry Christmas
Come on Tim, we all know Plinkster doesn't wear any underwear!
I equate it to 2 things.
Eloquence and accent
Is he replacing the term "ar15" with "msr15"?
I own 2 JP Enterprise rifles. 5.56 and a .308 - LOVE them BOTH!!!
Great looking caliber I just don't have the need for a 1000 yard ar15.
Could be good for self defense.
biggboysouth Barett 6.8 30 round magazines. You're good
The 224AR (aka 224 Grendel) smashes it....not much effort and its a 10 year old cartridge
Wow! That really is impressive performance guys. I would love to see more long range with this sweet new cartridge. Great job guys. Can't wait for more
I love the name, can’t go wrong with Valkyrie, I wonder what round would fit Freyja :)
Joseph Anthony Freya would have to have a huuuge hollow point..... you know, like Freya had a huuuge other hole ;)
wow, very cool round! this definitely peaks my interest! i cant wait to see what the future holds for the .224! thanks for the video mac and .22 plinkster!
Are those calipers in your pocket or are you just happy to see the 224VAL.
That was an amazing and very informative video guys. Thank you so much for all the great work that you guys are doing for us shooters out here.
From what I have seen from these long range cartridges is that they all seem to require barrels over 18". Do any of these show any advantage over M262 clone out of a 14.5" tube?
Standard Mk262 gets a little over 2500fps from a 16" barrel. Yes, the Valkyrie can beat that.
ostiariusalpha By how much, do you know what the ME is on the 22V out of a 14.5" or 16" tube?
delta3two I have looked and can not find a single report on .22V out of an M4 length barrel. I don't know where he is getting his numbers.
UnaSolida And then there’s always this guy.
UnaSolida Yeah, and that's assuming you can even detect targets that far out. The vast majority of us cannot, myself included.
TheSublime78 And then theres the guy that buys everything new in the firearm industry. You must be that guy that had the gen 5 glock on preorder.
Maybe. Either way, you’re a hipster.
Exactly, it does something for you in an AR platform, but that's it.
Two things about this cartridge come to mind. First, the case head diameter isn't ideally suited to the AR 15 bolt, and I wouldn't expect particularly long barrel life. Otherwise a very cool cartridge.
JP rifles have been known for quality for a while now
Greg Mason I've had generally good customer service from them too. How it should be.
Nice, accurate rifle as well. I'm impressed with this setup.
You said barrel change and bolt change what kind of parent casing is that using?
6.8SPC
Military Arms Channel can you use a 6.8 spc bolt?
You have to use a 6.8 bolt
What a nice fella bro Tim, looks like you giys hadda buncha fun, cold not withstanding:) Happy Holiday to ya both, MIKE.
Great vid but you can't shoot three 100yd groups only one of which is sub Mao then state that that it's a sub Mao gun. Surely having two of the three groups shooting over an moa is more representative.
what's sub mao? like sub stalin or sub castro?
Good to see the two of you shooting together. Loving that round. Really thinking about another upper.
Can you use a 5.56 suppressor, on the Valkerie?
Yes.
Id avoid it if your can's company is unwilling to warranty it for 7 inch barrels(or even 10 inch).
Its like using a 308 can on a 300win mag.
Probably fine, but not necessarily.
Edgar Valencia thanks for the info.
22plinkster thanks for the info. Glad that the 90gr. is catching on.
Very cool. I've been curious about this round. Def cant wait until this prototype hits the market.
I'm interested. Savage Bolt action in 224 and I will throw down.
That sounds like a fun gun.
Both of them!
This cartridge is pointless in a bolt gun. Get a 22-250 or 220 swift with a barrel twist for whatever weight range projectiles you want to shoot. This round is only worth something being fed out of AR mags. Other than that ballistically there's several rounds that do what this does, and better.
This doesnt really make much sense in a bolt action imo
If you think they created for the military then thats funny...they already have it in the shooting teams of the Army and Marines
I can't get excited until the production guns & ammo (& reviews) are available, and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to afford anything from JP. 8-/
look at Savage .224
Savage 224 is 18" bbl with 1:7 or 1:8 twist. You are not going to send a long bullet stable to 1300 yards with 18" bbl 1:7 or 1:8 twist.
I really like it. Upgrade from the 5.56 with less customize needed.recoil just great and it maintains supersonic at 1000yrds.👊
I wonder how this compares to other hot-rod .22 type rounds, especially price per performance?
Jeff England 22-250 is very similar, doesnt fit in a AR-15 though
Most hot rod 22caliber cartridges are not designed to shoot the heavier projectiles.
22-250 has more potential with a custom barrel twist and adjusted leads but otherwise 22-250 won't shoot >77gr worth a crap. Not to mention this cartridge is tiny and can fit in smaller actions all while burning less powder
The price actually looks pretty good, on the ammo anyways.
see the 224AR Robert Whitley
Kyle Vanwinkle no one gives a shit about "burning less powder."
There is no powder shortage.
If we wanted to burn less powder, wed just use 556nato.
90 gr, I would just be curious on a custom reload with a 115 grain pill. With a good powder, primer. Even some 223 grain sizes 77, 69, 62. Been following this new caliber since I caught wind of it.
Looks like a 5.45x39
Plinkster is the man.
Merry Christmas to all
I wonder if it holds up will the DOD consider it as a future caliber upgrade or maybe as a DMR option.
Robert Long No. It will never happen. The impetus behind the design fits as described in the video. A cartridge that can fit and work in the AR-15 size action and maintains supersonic velocity out to 1300y. The needs of the Military do not reflect the desires of the general long range comp/hunter.
Just what the military needs another useless weak
22 caliber
There is hardly any recoil on a 6.5 creedmoor
For some strange reason I’m now getting the urge to build a retro m16a1 in .224 Valkyrie (with a heavy profile barrel though so not totally pure in the look).
Did I just hear " not many have 4 to 5 grand for a rifle " yeah, nobody I know.
Awesome . Another long range paper puncher. The AR15 platform is truly is amazing.
Please shoot a long range prairie dog video this year !!!!!!!!!!!!
chris shooter agreed
How does it do out of a 14.5-16” barrel? Any ballistic gel tests coming?
This round has to perform well out of short barrels that are popular to be successful in my opinion.
Yay I can kill a squirrel at a quarter mile
Or a deer at 100 yards.
Wow Dave towers over Mac!!
Spyder And Tim is not a little guy!
Dave is 6'6"
Tim is like 6’ 5” or so been going to copper custom now for probably 5 or 6 years now he’s a lot taller in person lol
Merry Christmas everybody. Greets from the Netherlands, oet Grun'!
I love the channel and think this caliber is going to be awesome. The video got a little too commercialized for MAC. I guess that's the price you pay to be allowed on the bleeding edge of something new.
trevor perrydore comes with a free slap-chop when you act now
@@kephrarubin 😆😆😆
Looks like a great ultra long range plinking tool / toy. great for varmints! But Ar platform for deer - well that 6.8 spc and 6.5 Grendel still look pretty good to me. I quite like the 6.8 for an all around cartridge at woods terrain ranges. just my 2 cents.
This seems a lot like the 250 Savage.
C Maugel exactly
C Maugel what the the highest B.c. for the 250?
.308or5.56? You'd have to to look, there's a few custom makers as well as Berger and Hornady that put out decent l.r. stuff.
I've been cleanly taking deer in Ky for the last three years with a 62gr .223 SP. This new round with say a 90gr Fusion....that should be SWEET!
I took two White Tails last week week with the 90gr Fusion. You'll see shortly, it flattened them.
Sounds like a paid ad.
OK, so, the 224 can be used in a rifle chambering 223 or 556? Sorry if I missed this in the video.
Oh yeah, and then there’s AK guys.....
Welcome to the internet. LOL
You sir, hit the nail on the head.
TheSublime78 Hmm, like going to walmart, or the county fair , or Nascar, just love looking at the show, they are probably thinking the same about me.
TheSublime78 Hey, don't beat your self up, trolls like you and I have rights.
Surely they didn’t say oh Its a $2k 1”AR.....or as overly said/sold....MSR...I’m betting they initially told you its a 1/2” gun 😁
TBD when real production stuff starts hitting the streets I guess. Ballistics are promising however.
What dbm is required for the 224? Same dbm as the 6.5 Grendel?
Aside: the 224 still will not qualify for use on big game in WA & about 10 other states. .243" (6 mm) minimum required.
This feels like maybe an advertisement. Is this an advertisement?
It seems like you're asking to be banned. I don't do advertisements.
What length barrel do you need for those ballistics? Federal is the only one making the ammo, right? 6.8 mags are required, yes?
Well, I was sold on the 6.5 Creed......until I watched this video. Thanks for the review. Semper Fi.
Semper Fi.
You should still be sold on it. the .224 isn't going to take down an elk or big game. .224 is a varmit round/paper puncher. I' know Miltary Arms killed a deer with it at 100ish yds, but I think the Grendel is a much better hunting set up for the ar15
Lol. This will never take the place of creed. Or any other 30 cal based cartridge for that matter. It's still a 90 ish grain projectile.
Brett Wilson: see my reply to Jared below.
A quick look on Midway USA showed really only Match Bullets at a 80 to 90 grain weight. I wonder if there are some good hunting bullets available in heavier weights.
I just saw that there is a fusion hunting round in 90 grains that would be the first load I would try
What type of game could you ethically take with the 224 Valkyrie?
Jared Davis if you don't suck you can take an elk or moose with 5.56. Remember, the 1957 world record grizzly was killed by a grandmother with a .22LR. That shit head in into the wild killed a moose with a .22lr.
I just took two White Tail deer in Texas with it. One buck and one doe.
Military Arms Channel what kind of ammo did you use to harvest those Tim?
It works for elephants, giraffes and small game.
Prototype gun, prototype ammunition, it looks impressive, but I'll wait to see how production unit perform.
The ammo and all the barrels and bolts are already on the market and being listed on sites like Midway and elsewhere.
Good job.
Stephen Smith This guy usually shows up too.
Someone is bitter and jealous.
Stephen Smith how dare he get excited about the new toys that showed up in his mail box!
I'd like to see some terminal ballistics tests compared to 5.56...sure, good for prairie dogs, but what else might it be good for?
$4000 Prairie dog gun I'll pass, it's still just a .22. But kids need their Kool-Aid
My next video is me, a guide and a cameraman in South West Texas slaying White Tail with it.
To bad you didnt use the 224 Grendel
I built a .224 Valkyrie, EASY under dime sized 5 shot groups.ALL DAY !!! And damn near ZERO recoil.
So much excitement and excuses for MOA groups, lol
that's what I was thinking
The two of you strike a nice balance. It makes for a nice video to watch.
Only time will tell.
thats an accusation with no evidence whatsoever.
Dude that hostage steel shooting was sick. Pretty cool caliber I'm thinking that would be a more ethical caliber compared to the 6.5
Meh, come back to me in 3-5 years. I bet this round will be dead outside of the niche competition circuit. Sorry im a pessimist about this kind of stuff, but only because im usually right. Id love to be wrong this time though.
I imagine 5 years from now those oddball AR cartridges are going to be sent off to the cartridge graveyard. The .300 Blackout is case in point.
that looks like their .308 SACS receiver set but in 5.56 length, are they gonna be bringing that receiver set to market?
Wow 22P sounds like a company shill for Federal.
Too well rehearsed.
Good presentation tho
Mac is a kid in a candy store.
👍
Dave is a sponsored shooter for Federal, I'm not. Dave is the reason I got to see the .224 so early and why I got to play with it. I've since been on a deer hunt with it (video to come) and I was very happy with how it took down the Texas White Tail. The one thing that I don't like about it is that I can't use it for deer here in Indiana. I have to stick with 6.5 or 6.8.
Can’t hide a lemon forever. And once people knew it was a lemon or not it’d be his reputation destroyed for life.

I'm wondering about throat/barrel erosion with this high velocity cartridge. Any ideas on barrel life?
Thanks for the video Tim, I look forward to seeing how this caliber does in the future and you and plinky work good together..lol
It's a JP.... Thousands of competitive shooters choose JP for a reason! Competitive shooting sports might not be everyone's cup of tea but you've got to admit it/we are the origins and birth place of some awesome stuff!
