  • As CEO of Union Rescue Mission, a privately run, Christian - based homeless shelter located on Los Angeles' Skid Row, Andy strongly disagrees with the city government's focus of "harm reduction" and its inherent leniency regarding drug use. Instead, his primary focus remains on providing immediate services and shelter for those experiencing homelessnes while also insisting that those services must include the support and commitment necessary to live a life free from the influence of drugs.
Over the years, Andy played a pivotal role in reshaping and directing hospital and governmental policies away from “dumping” of homeless patients from hospitals on to the streets of Skid Row. Andy’s present focus is organizing and working with community partners to address the epidemic of homelessness in Los Angeles.
Andy has many awards and honors for his community service, including: being named as the 930th Point of Light by President George Bush in 1992, receiving the 1999 Des Moines NAACP Community Service Award, and receiving the 2004 Martin Luther King, Jr. Award from the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Pasadena. He was declared a Treasure of LA by the Central City Association in 2017.
I am deeply honored for the opportunity to have Interviewed a true crusader who has worked tirelessly for the last 36 years on behalf of those experiencing homlessness.

Andy, thank you so much for doing this interview. There are so many of us wanting and trying to do something that without leadership and direction, no one gets anything done. There are many great ideas out there. The resources need to come together.
I know what NYC is saying. They are hard core and don't take anything from anyone. When something needs to be done, it's done. LA, thinks they are hard core but then gets lost in the commitees, policies and politics. (I'm a Yankee transplant btw. I've seen both sides. I also know Des Moines and built houses there.)
Andy is a pilar and rock with a heart of gold. His passion is seen in his staff around him and through anyone he meets. Even after loosing his legs, he has gone Over the Edge, cycled up the Pacific Coast not letting anything stop him from continuing this important mission. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for every bit of it Andy! Sending love and prayers from the Bay Area. 🙏🏼💗
