CARTOON EVOLUTION #12
I take a look at the history and evolution of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, the hilariously wild creations of legendary animator Chuck Jones, debuting in 1949.
Developed as a satirical parody on the popular chase cartoons of the 1940s, the pair accidentally revolutionized the formula and influenced animated films thereafter.
While the pair didn’t evolve a great deal visually, over time, their stylistic and narrative style did, with Jones creating a template which would change the face of cartoons and animated gag-work forever. I take a look at how the characters have evolved and how animators at both Warner Bros. and DePatie-Freleng Enterprises changed their look, and visual style.
Here's my look at Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner through the years!

Obviously, nothing comes close to the original Chuck Jones cartoons. But I honestly really like the three 3D animated shorts - really takes full advantage of the medium to enhance the gags and animation, while staying true to the rules established by Jones, and managing to be legitimately funny.
It makes sense that “new characters felt like intruders” because as a kid I always thought it was only the Roadrunner and Coyote in the world of the cartoon
so in a way, Chuck Jones is the reason why Wile E. couldn't catch the roadrunner, due to Chuck putting in a certain rule stating that he isn't allowed to succeed.
Ahhh but he did
@@tomahawkfourth9254 true....
Ok
What’s about that one episode where he cooked road runner
You know Chuck Jones struck gold the first time out when most of the video is talking about the history leading up to the first Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote cartoon, the rules for making a good one, and a VPN ad rather than any evolution the two went through.

Another classic Cartoon Evolution! I always loved how expressive Wile E Coyote was, despite not speaking. I considered the wolf in the Sam and Ralph shorts to be a different guy, but looking at it as the same 'actor' playing a different part makes a lot of sense! Good work as always Dave.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
The different color noses are the key.
You completely forgot about the Road Runner shorts that aired as segments of the classic PBS series The Electric Company.
The one-time Road Runner/Speedy Gonzalez crossover actually needed to happen - kind of a forerunner to today's deathbattles. Who was faster, Speedy or Road Runner in the Looney tunes universe?
Chuck Jones's own "Fair and Worm-er" (1946) was an earlier attempt to parody the chase cartoon as well - or at least to create the ultimate one. A rare-er part of the pre-evolution, in a way. Great cartoon, too!
10:58 I didn’t expect Roadrunner to hold up a sign that saids “I just don’t have a heart”
I have because I have seen the cartoon. I guess Dave liked it so much that he made sure the clip ends there :) But my favorite sign was Coyote’s “in Heaven’s name what am I doing?!” LOL
@@calebkuti7897 Oh, that was a good one. My favorite fall scene was the cactus drop that launched him back upwards with an "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOWWWW!!!"
What can you say as Bugs Bunny Says: ain’t he a stinker
The sign actually reads: I just don't have the heart.
Meaning he can't put Wile E. through any more pain.

I always thought the Sam and Ralph cartoons were a clever commentary on how animals assume their roles in nature just like it was a paid job, with no hard feelings involved.
The fact that it’s their job makes me love them even more. They are my favorite duos in Looney Tunes
@@calebkuti7897 I remember one Sam & Ralph cartoon in which there wasn't a final 'big laugh' gag. It just showed the Sheepdog and Wolf going their separate ways as the Sun sets, just another day at work. I don't remember the title of the cartoon. however.
I don’t remember the name either but it’s nice that we have that rare side of Looney Tunes that’s peaceful and all in good nature

Also who knew Chuck Jones inspiration on including Wile E. Coyote was from a Mark Twain Novel along with using Bugs Bunny's design for the creation of him.

Sometimes I'm a bit amazed that even though these cartoons of the 1940's & 1950's were created to be shown only once at movie houses (after a movie, or between two movies), today we have access to so many of them on disc and other venues ... and we can enjoy them at our convenience, over and over. We are fortunate. Sometimes I forget that.
Also: the Coyote must *never* catch that bird he preys on. It's tantamount to Charlie Brown being able to kick the football or having a successful afternoon flying his kite. Comedy is about losing and defeat and pain; it's failure and conflict. Don't mess with the system.
For some reason I have more respect for the duo after watching this video.

Oh, Dave doesn't think they work as well. As for me, at least I can tell these apart. Apart from Fast and Furry-ious, the Roadrunner cartoons tend to blend together.
I like Ralph, no, prefer Ralph Wolf as well. There's just something about the Roadrunner that puts me off, call it "enigmatic maliciousness".
Well, Daffy's card said he is a Wizard :-D
Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts were outsourced to DPE and Format Films,
just like those Tom and Jerry shorts by Gene Deitch.
Actually, The Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour was on CBS, which had made its return on September 1975. They changed it to The Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show from 1977 to 1985.

Thank you! 😊
They also showed up during the seventies in a few animated segments for the show The Electric Company.
Don’t remember those. But I’m sure they were lame.
@@MrBROTHERFELDER Aw, they were all right. They were a combination of the usual Wile E/Roadrunner antics and kids' education/reading comprehension. (Usually they involved Wile E. reading some sign or other.) And I believe they were created by Chuck Jones himself, not DePatie/Freleng.
@@jenniferschillig3768 Chuck Jones did indeed direct those shorts.
@@vincentfranklin17 Cool. :-)
Want to point out that rule number ten has been broken twice, that the Coyote technically have caught the Road Runner (but still not have even got the smallest bite out of that bird).
The first time was in The Solid Tin Coyote, when Wile E used a giant robot coyote which caught the RoadRunner but ended up eating Wile E instead. Second time was in Soup or Sonic was when the Coyote chased the Roadrunner through a series of pipes which got smaller and smaller and both got on the other side being as small as mice (as the pipes were "funneling" them to the small size), they run back and while The Road Runner was restored to his original size, Wile E for some reason didn't making him still tiny. Excitingly he grabs the still-standing Road Runner's leg and is about to chow on him, when Coyote realizes how huge the bird is compaired to him. Unable to do something without the Road Runner be able to peck or squash him, he turns to the audience holding up a couple of signs saying "All right, wiseguys… you've always wanted me to catch him. Now what do I do?".
Also at times Coyote does feel small pain but is mostly humilated. A couple of times he has been feel slightly hurt and humilated as he walks away (once for being caught in a bear trap) and while glancing over the audience he says in a very monotone voice: "Ouch.".
All the rules were broken numerous times. As I noted, they weren't as "strict" as Jones lead us to believe, and likely didn't even exist at the time of creation.
Keep up the great work, always looking forward to the cartoon evolution series.
Thank you!
@@DaveLeeDownUnderI think it would be an interesting idea if you did more minor characters like Sam Sheepdog (maybe do a quick recap on Wile E./Ralph Wolf's history), Rocky and Mugsey, and Sylvester Jr and Hippity.

I loved the road runner and coyote shorts as a kid. I even had a few video games of them.
Loved the Road Runner shorts, even loved when he was pitted against Bugs, but I never thought the sheep dog shorts where Wilie Coyote.
30:03 That wouldn't be "no pre-'47 cartoons" as stated, but no POST-'47 cartoons.
My favorite is Zoom At The Top (1961), because of 2 gags: One where a freeze machine freezes Wile E. instead of the Road Runner, and, when he tries to melt the ice with a magnifying glass, it ALL melts, including Wile E.! But my favorite is earlier: the whole jagged-toothed trap bit that ends with jagged Wile E. letting out a surreal, flat "ouch" (a wonderful subversion on the rule of that character only verbalizing yelling in pain), the eye shifting to the audience only adding to it.
Absolutely love the roadrunner! Got a subscription to the boomerang app just to watch the roadrunner. I do notice a few episodes are missing on that platform but after watching this I can kinda connect the dots. The origin of the coyote just blew my mind! New subscriber to your channel!!
Could you please do the evolution of pink panther 1963-2020.
Good point
Yeah, the old ones were funnier and had more class.
the music was also scored by either William Lava or Walter Greene.
Nice work as always. I especially like how you included the Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog shorts as well. It’s interesting to watch those cartoons back to back and see the two become more and more friendly outside of work hours as the years go on (by the time of the last cartoon, they’re living in the same house and walking off into the sunset together). There’s a certain appeal to the fact that all the antics in these shorts are just part of their jobs, and at the end of the day, they don’t hold any resentment towards each other.
As for the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote shorts, I enjoy them, and appreciate the amount of dedication Jones had when it came to establishing his rules. However, the cartoons are obviously very formulaic and I find they play better when you watch one every now and then rather than watching them back to back (compared to Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck cartoons where there’s often a lot of variety in the situations and therefore they don’t get repetitive). They’re still a lot of fun, though. I always love the shots of Wile E. Coyote falling off the cliff from that upwards angle where he progressively appears smaller as he falls closer to the ground. That always makes me laugh.
Actually I never really saw the Wild Chase as a "true" Road Runner cartoon; I saw it as a Speedy Gonzales cartoon that happened to have the Road Runner & Coyote guest star.
I liked thoese in wich Wile.E. can talk
I'm with you. I liked Coyote's voice in those.
So do I. It’s pointless for him not to talk all the time, and for the Roadrunner not to talk at all.
Oddly enough, Wile E. never speaks in the Road-Runner cartoons, but in the Bugs Bunny cartoons he never shuts up.
Although I liked the cartoons featuring Wile E Coyote and the Roadrunner I really like the ones where Wile E actually can talk. And it was interesting to see him trying to catch Bugs Bunny!
I loved it when Wile E. Coyote spoke in the cartoons where he met Bugs!
You just can't beat these two when it comes to entertainment!! I just love them. Thanks for the chuckles in this otherwise dismal reality.
In addition to Paul Julian making the meep meep/beep beep, the sound effect for this tongue rapidly sticking out was done by Treg Brown putting on his thumb at the end of a bottle and lifting it up and put the sounds in rapid succession to make it go quickly.
It never dawned on me that Wile E Coyote's design was constructed as an inverse Bugs. It's there in plain sight.
(Also, someone please get Dave Lee Down Under access to HBO Max)
This... This is the one I’ve been waiting for. 💙

@@DaveLeeDownUnder Elmer Fudd? Yogi Bear? Or maybe it's the Pink Panther!
How I recall these Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote cartoons and even the ones on the show of The Electric Company on PBS TV.Again my very Nostalgic comment fits the bill.
The best gag in this is where your computer exploded on you, leaving you with a charred face. Excuse my laughing out loud, but it was hilariously funny. In any case, Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote are my top favourite Looney Tunes duo. Aside from this, I'd like to see a voice evolution of Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic is my favourite little blue mascot. From his first outing in Mega Drive Game Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) to his first cartoon debut on TV, video and DVD (1994), Sonic is an iconic character in his own way. My favourite Sonic voice actor is Jaleel White. His infamous catchphrase is so funny. He gets impatient when there's nothing going on. I quote it thus:
"I'm waaiiting!"
Long John Baldry, no longer alive, was the first voice actor of Sonic's Arch Enemy, Dr. Ivo Robotnik. At least once or twice in each episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, except Momma Robotnik's Birthday, Robotnik yells out his own catchphrase:
"I HATE THAT HEDGEHOG!"
This is something of what I know about the history of Sonic the Hedgehog.
I think the funniest gag (relating to these shorts) is the one with the paint tricks.
One of my favorite cartoons in this series is the one where Bugs Bunny stood in for the Roadrunner. Bugs explained why he was there: apparently, the Roadrunner had thrown his wishbone. The cartoon was basically Bugs commentating Wile E.'s methods of trying to catch him. As for his ability to run super fast, Bugs explained that he was just doing his Roadrunner impression. And also taking some special pills for a little help.
Hare-Breadth Hurry. The only cartoon where Wile E. doesn't speak when going up against Bugs. It is, in a way, a Roadrunner cartoon, so the rules apply.
Matthew O'callaghans design of wile and road runner is my favorite :)
14:54 An interesting bit of 'trivia' is that back in the old days (where phone books were the way you looked up any type of service) naming your company something that landed you at the beginning of the list was common practice, Like A+ or AA, or AAA... and for some reason they used ACME quite frequently... My guess is that companies desperate enough to do this would probably be the type that are not that great at their business...I wonder if they used the ACME because of a bad dealing with a contractor or something that was listed at the beginning of the phone book lol
Another fantastic video full of fascinating facts and much loved memories. My first introduction to these two were through the Bugs Bunny Road Runner movie, along with their festive special, so these stand out to me. One of the best moments of any cartoon is the introduction with the made up scientific terminology. These always make me chuckle 🤣
Thank you again and well done 👏😁
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed!
I love(d) their appearances on CTW's "The Electric Company" (appearing on PBS here in the States) in the mid-70s. My favorite when Wil E. is about to tace the Road Runner, and is stopped at a light that read, at first, "On Your Mark", "Get Set"....then "SMILE", and started going through 5 other commands, which Wil E. obeys. The commands start going faster and faster. Then we discover that the Road Runner is rapidly flipping switches to play with Wil E. You can find most of them on RUclips.
I’d love to see you make a series that spotlights specific animators like Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, and even the nine old men from Disney! Where they started, their influence, their style, and how they were known in the industry! Obviously it’s just a wishful thought from me though but you seem well versed in animators and so many people neglect the faces behind the cartoons. Anyways, great video!

Not sure what happened here - I definitely cut vision to it, and it was present in my final run-throughs. My guess, some kind of rendering issue, or something got knocked from the timeline just before export. Strange.
26:20 In the words of Dave Lee, “They are pale predictable imitations and shells of what they once were”
How the hell are these two 71 YEARS OLD?!?!? My childhood is decades older than I am
I had always thought The first Short to have the Coyote was two of them Clocking in for a job of catching Sheep, also two dogs as well one was day shift Cyote with red nose other black, same for the sheep dogs. This came out in 1947, and had the same exact features as the Wile E Coyote. Boy am I wrong, learning that now with The Coyote as Ralph and the no name black nosed character.
