We bought a two different trailor hitch locks from Madlock - The coupler lock is one piece and the square nose fits great for our boat trailor. American made steel. Happy to find products locally made in the USA these days
Very disappointing list. It doesn’t take long to find several RUclips videos showing why anything with a traditional key lock is a waste of money. These can be picked with ease or a pipe can be used to break the lock off. I’m looking for options that can’t be found in every hardware store across America as these are the brands that have been proven to be opened without much trouble.
After the video was completed, we began carrying ICON coupler locks (see link). They aren't an inexpensive option, but they're extremely rugged and well built. Hopefully, they are more like what you're looking for. www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer_Coupler_Locks-pm-Altor_Locks.aspx
@@etrailer those Icon Altor's are no different from a kingpin lock setup on the semi-trailer, you take 1 good swing with a hammer and they drop right off
Those look pretty nice! We'll get with our product acquisition people and see if we can pick those up. That being said, we just started carrying the ICON trailer coupler locks that look really secure. You can check those out by using this link: www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer_Coupler_Locks-pm-Altor_Locks.aspx
We have a Rogue Trailer that Alumaweld boats come with. The coupler is bolted on so the coupler lock if theif is smart will bring their own coupler. Some years ago we stopped to fish an area in our way home. Tide was really low so we turned around and came back to boat ramp. Loaded boat and secured. Started to drive off and hear and feel the trailer bang. Get out and the nut on the ball is half ways off. So someone obviously was going to unbolt the ball and blot onto their hitch. Boat shop put spot of weld on threads of ball bolt. I had a lock on the coupler of the trailer. With a bolted on coupler I worry about that too. Insurance companies don’t pay what boats are currently worth. A guy way before Covid had a 50 hp Honda outboard stolen off his boat in his driveway. Insurance didn’t give him enough to replace it so went to a cheap brand of 50 hp outboard.
Given enough time and the right tools, any lock can be defeated. The etrailer # e98897 lock won't fit all couplers, so the design of the coupler and your budget are the most important factors to keep in mind when choosing a coupler lock.
We recently added the ICON line of coupler locks that are very secure. You can check them out here: www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer_Coupler_Locks-pm-Altor_Locks.aspx
After we posted that video, we began offering the ICON line of locks that offer a higher level of security than what's shown in that video. You can check them out here: www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer_Coupler_Locks-pm-Altor_Locks.aspx
To be honest with you, locks are for keeping honest folks honest. If a thief is bound and determined to defeat a lock to steal your stuff, they're gonna do it. Bank vaults even get broken into. The best case scenario is that a lock will provide deterrence. The bad guy sees the lock and decides to move on to an easier target. This being said, we recently started carrying the ICON line of trailer coupler locks that look to offer a high level of security. They aren't inexpensive, but they look really promising. www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer_Coupler_Locks-pm-Altor_Locks.aspx
Thieves are using battery operated cut off wheels, how do these hold up to being cut off? That aluminum one looks nice, but will cut like butter. The Bolt coupler lock looks like the only one that stands a chance of deterring a would be thief.
A determined thief would be able to pretty quickly dispatch all the locks shown, but they will provide some deterrence and they'll also help keep honest people honest. This is about the best you can hope for when it comes to a lock. The hope is that they see the lock and then decide to move on to an easier target. The ICON trailer coupler locks from Altor would be much more difficult to defeat, but they're pretty expensive. You can check them out using the link I've provided below: www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer_Tongue_Lock-pm-Altor_Locks.aspx
Yeah, that one you linked to is a beast. I was looking at the tubular style with the puck lock on the front. Like the Proven Industries Model 2516, seems like a really good lock that isn't too much fuss.
Any lock can be defeated if the person trying to open it is determined enough. What locks CAN do is provide a deterrent. The hope is that most thieves will see the lock and move on to easier pickings.
True. Some are better than others, for sure. Once thing to keep in mind is that locks are only good for keeping honest folks honest. If a thief is bound and determined to steal your stuff, they're gonna get it. The hope (as you mentioned) is that the thief will see the lock and will hopefully move on to an easier target.
That's a fair point, but to be perfectly honest that information is already available and has been for years. We constantly get questions from folks wondering how secure a given lock is. The real question is how much deterrence does a particular lock offer. A determined thief can defeat just about any lock given the time and opportunity. Bank vaults can be broken into if the thief is determined enough....
Fair point for sure. But to be perfectly honest, a determined thief can break into a bank vault if they want it bad enough. Like Grandpa used to say, locks are for keeping honest people honest. All a lock can do is provide some deterrence. The hope is that a less determined thief would move on to an easier target.
This is disappointing. I really wanted to see some locks that actually work really well.
Agreed, they all appear to be all bark, no bite, JUNK!😳

Multiple layers of deterrent locks along with removing tires channing the trailer to something else and so on.

I have had the Proven lock about 2 years. Very impressive.
very good demo

The most expensive is the easiest to break. Long pvc pipe and that lock is bent and broken off. The etrailer lock is the best out of these options

Consider AMPlocks. They are better than all these by far

About 2 min's with a battery 4" grinder. Thieves these days don't give a sh1t about noise. They're gone before anyone really twigs

If this block blocks the hitch why not take off the hitch
Is there any that you cannot get off? That would be the best kind.

I've seen those too. Looks like they work very well. I know for a fact that the puck lock is very hard to defeat.

What'd you do? Removed the Master Lock label and printed etrailer instead? Garbage
No. We didn't do that.
All you need is grinder...
What alternative would you suggest? Just about any lock can be defeated if the thief has the time and opportunity.
Some are barely a deterent.

Hire a real thief to break/ pick these locks. I've seen much more robust locks available.
