Parkville, a residential suburb in three parts with Royal Park at its centre, is 4 km north of Melbourne.
In about 1845 a reservation for a park or open space was approved by the Governor of New South Wales (after a request for a smaller area by the Melbourne Town Council), extending from North Melbourne to Carlton and comprising 1036 ha.
The population increased after the gold rush which resulted in severances from the reservation for urban growth, and Royal Park of about 283 ha was proclaimed. In time further severances occurred: 1858, for an experimental farm of 575 ha in the north-west: 1861, for a zoological garden of 20 ha, for the Acclimatisation Society in the middle of Royal Park; 1868, three areas for houses, forming Parkville North, South and West; and 1875, a further area enlarging Parkville South from Park Drive to Gatehouse Street, which enclosed a watercourse which later formed the linear Ievers Reserve.
Parkville South has a few shops along Royal Parade and Naughton's Hotel is a popular venue for residents and for University students from across Royal Parade.
The University of Melbourne is bounded on three sides by Carlton, but is in the Parkville postcode area.
Parkville North is linear shaped, with Royal Parade as its main frontage and The Avenue as a crescent-shaped western boundary. It contains research, educational and theological institutions, numerous blocks of flats and some notable Queen Anne Federation-style houses.
Parkville West is the smallest of the three, facing Flemington Road near the Flemington Bridge railway station. The surrounding traffic noise was made louder when the area was chosen as the entry point for the Tullamarine Freeway. Fortunately Royal Park provides an expansive ‘backyard’.

They don't build houses and buildings with such character anymore. All of those vintage houses are so beautiful. Love the ironwork on the Hever building. Thanks for taking us on this Parkville heritage walk. Happy Holidays
I agree Gasper, buildings these day are erected a lot faster and the quality is not the same. Thank you for joining us on this adventure. Happy New Year. 🌲🍾🥂

You are always adding different elements. Always great to experiment. Crazy that you have no sleeves. It is -11 degrees F (-24 C). So cold here right now. Peter is always so stylish. The structures here are so pretty. Thanks for sharing the history of Australia. I wonder if Melissa will let me get one of those horse heads for the house. 😂
I am with you Carl. I try to find different elements and think of different ways of putting my videos together. Yep! We have finally a Heat Wave! It is Hot in Down Under. Today it is 33ºc (91ºf) in Melbourne. 🥵 I hope you are not freezing your Turkey Nuts Off 🤣🥶 I will pass on the compliment to Peter.
Make sure That the Horses Head doesn't come from the GodFather 🤣 Have a great New Year and Thank you for your wonderful support during 2022. I look forward to your adventures in 2023. 🍾🥂🎅🏻🤗👍🏼🌲🙏🏼

Many thanks and have a great weekend. 👍🏼🤗🦘🐨
Great tour around Parkville! I loved seeing the Terraced homes and how well they are maintained! It's nice to have mature neighborhoods with pretty trees and plantings. We're just heading into winter- I love seeing it turn to summer there! The houses sort of remind me of New Orleans, where they have lots of French style iron work porches, but of course it's not the same. Very lovely! Thanks for adding the names and dates for all the various buildings and houses! Fun day out with Ruby :) Have a great week and a Happy Christmas!! like 👍👍
I know what you mean about New Orleans and its Terraces, I have had the privilege of visiting this amazing place in 1997. Glad you enjoyed coming along with us on this Heritage walk Jennifer. You know Ruby, she is the star of the show. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas. 🎄❤️🎅🏽 Thank you for watching. 👍🏽🙏🏽

Glad you enjoyed Parkville. Thank you for stopping by and watching. 👍🏼🙏🏼🌲🍾🥂
Thank you guys for the fantastic video which i have been looking for some time. It's very nostalgic and took me down memory lane. I lived in 123, Park Street during 1964/65. I couldn't find Park Street in Google maps but instead Park Avenue
Has it been renamed? I still remember the wrought iron gate and steps down from the road to the ground floor of the house. And of the outhouse at the back. I used to walk to school at University High School where I did my Leaving certificate and Matriculation. Then on Sundays took the tram to Victoria market. I had a bicycle and got around a bit. I remember the post office where I posted my letters home. Thank you Joe and Peter. Love to see more of Parkville ❤
Thank you Richard for coming along with us on this walk around Parkville.
Good question Richard, like many street names and suburbs, sometimes names do get changed. Glad we brought you back some fond memories. I haven't covered anything else in Parkville at this stage, but have covered other suburbs around the area. Loved the comments, much appreciated. 👍🏼❤️🤠
After Parkville I moved to Drummond St. in North Carlton and then to Palmer St.North Fitzroy behind St. Vincent hospital which was closer to RMIT Lygon St. Campus which I attended. You got any videos on those two suburbs please?
Yes there is one on Fitzroy and one on North Fitzroy 🤗
*꧁ Excelente 🍬 Obrigado 👌 ꧂*
Thank you for stopping by and watching. Have a wonderful day. 👍🏼🙏🏼🤗
It's a cool and sincere video.
I always thank you and support you. My friend!!!!
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed coming along with us. Happy New Year. 🍾🥂🙏🏼👍🏼
I love those houses such as York place, nice video
Glad you enjoyed Matt, Thank you. Have a great day. 👍🏽🙏🏽🤗
@@CowboyJojosAdventures thanks Joe
Merry Christmas🎄
Merry Christmas Charley, enjoy the celebrations.
My old stomping ground. Parkville is divided by the parks, my old school UHS is in Storey Street. I think Edna Walling would like shabby for her cottage gardens. It's amazing the MMBW didn't demolish these buildings which they called sub standard dwellings.
This MMBW might now be protected. Royal Park does have some magnificent Terraces and Victorian Architecture. Do you still live in Australia?
Kind regards ~ Joseph
