The Jabulani is actually one of, if not the most popular ball to use in FootGolf. Strange considering it’s a precision sport dependent on accuracy. This is also why the balls are so rare now because of the demand in the FootGolf from players world wide
Learning to be a goalkeeper with the jabulani was the hardest entry barrier ever but I'm glad in the long run as it helped me form my reflexes and made me better.
The ball was said to be perfectly round when it was introduced for the 2010 world cup, which is a terrible thing for a ball to be, a soccer ball is supposed to deform and take an aerodynamic shape in midair like an oval, also the grooves on the ball help to make the ball take a trayectory acording to how a player kicks it, the Jabulani lacks these two very important things, a prefectly round and smooth ball is not the right ball to play football.
Honestly this is my favourite ball, the only ball that is anti-physics. It is so fun playing with it and certainly for sure my favourite design of all footballs. Personally, i find the ball accurate enough if your kicking techniques are right although there are some weird movements through the trajectory which i love..
A ball should not have some rng movement. The fact you could kick a perfect kick and it just decides to wobble too far to the left and ends up missing is stupid
I had the chance to play with a Jabulani back in 2010 when I was 14 and it was really strange, to see how it reacted when volleyed but also how unpredictable it was in deadball situations... Out of all my friends only a few of us managed to get somewhat close to getting a feel for it
This explains a bit, when we hosted the world cup it was our official ball. When you look at the first goal scored (simphiwe shabalala) it was a near impossible angle but after watching this vid that ball movement makes sense. This ball is goated!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😁
Smooth balls like this leave a oscillating wake of air behind them, with alternating pressure. That's why you see the ball juggle around. Newer balls, if you look closely, have dimples in them much like golf balls. The idea is to break the steady and predictable air flow behind the ball by introducing turbulence at much lower speeds. It also enhances user spin input
Weil that's not really true, if you run your fingers over it you will feel a sort of wavy texture that is meant to give the ball a certain curve. Its simply the first time they tried this new technique on a ball and they just carried it to far. Almost every ball since then has it, just done better
What about the Champions League Matchballs? The seem to even more of a "perfect round ball", yet they don't move as extreme unless you've got the technique
MbisonBalrog If its perfectly round its more easily affected by spin and outside factors. Ever kicked one of those beach rubber footballs that are prefectly round? In golf for example the ball has those small dents to make it go straighter and actually further, as it creates a cussion of air around the ball which reduces the peessure difference in front and behind the ball (along with the sides ofcause). Basically the imperfections mixes the air up more evenly around the ball, so it takes more outside forces to affect its travel and deceleration.
I think Cam had the best techique when it came to the shot, but really cool to see all the shots, I remember when this ball initially came out like it was yesterday, crazy to think of how long it's been since, was definitely a ball that nobody will forget due to the air technology Adidas used with the ball
When you kick a knuckle ball the ball doesn’t “act weird”, with no spin the ball has no aerodynamic benefits from spin. As a result of this the ball becomes influenced by small air currents all around that we don’t feel. Thus the ball moves in an unusual and unpredictable fashion.
The shape weight and stitch work make it move either left of right due to the direction of the kickers foot at their final point of impact but given it's designed to be a perfect sphere in the air, perfect spheres when given direction and rotation by a kick they can literally bounce around in the air. Wind and the kickers inertia is the greatest contributing factor to the Jabulani's effect but random small gust of wind you can't see can make it curl up or down and sometimes even bounce depending how windy it is. I had three when I was a kid and smashed the shit out of a concrete wall with them on a windy Autumn day and I gotta say from playing with hundreds of soccer balls from various grades, this ball does some weird shit if you hit em hard enough.
I've always wanted to see a video where the ball launcher shoots knuckleballs, especially with a Jabulani, but it's too bad even a machine like that can't shoot deadballs with perfect consistency. I personally think that the dip on Ewan's goal looked a bit better, but I know that Cam has wanted a new Jabulani since he lost his old one, so good for him :D Great video, Kieran!
Nico Mankila Ewan’s freekick was better for sure, I agreed on the day, but in terms of a knuckleball, maybe that’s why I won. Not sure whether to use the ball or display it, it’s so beautiful haha 😍
Back when I still played footy we played and trained with the Jabulani. Opposition teams would get so annoyed and frustrated when we played with it. My all time favourite football
Could you make a video with the ball launcher doing insane spins, like backspin, side spin, topspin, etc and collab with Mark Rober to tell us the science behind it?
I remember my early days of football in the 90s where you could easily injury your foot by kicking the ball as they where so heavy. Today balls fly everywhere
I was in school during the 2010 world cup (I'm south african) and one of the kid's brought the new jabulani ball to school. We didn't even play, just took turns kicking the ball to see the spin.
Love your vids, but I think it's hard the see the movement of the ball with the camera off to the side. It looked better from the ball launcher on. Keep doing greats things man!

Won’t perfectly round make movement more difficult? Is more aerodynamic. Baseballs have seams and that breaks up roundness.
