    Rudy is 100% right, I have a dock repair/ remodling business. I work alone because i dont trust anyone..alot of the time my customers are very wealthy and if i hired someone and they were to steal something my reputation would be ruined..rather just work alone...on a side note a few years ago when i was just starting out I had a big contractor offer me $50K to split my business 50/50 with him basically he wanted to be a silent partner..it was tempting at the time because I was small..but I ended up declining his offer..glad I did because he ended up being a scuzbag. Rudy is also right about having a side hustle I flip cars in my spare time. I will buy a nice car with low miles with a blown headgasket etc and rebuild the engine and sell it..pretty profitable..I like Rudy, I have never played MTG but I watch his channel because he is business savy and a funny guy..

    The back half of this video rings so true and it’s exactly what my mom used to tell me when I was young and stupid. As always, people with life experience tend to be correct when they espouse this kind of advice. It would behoove anyone under the age of 25 to pay really close attention. Hustle while you can, make smart financial decisions, build good credit while it’s easy to do so, and start putting together a proper foundation for your successful future. Good shit Rudy.

    I definitely agree on forcing yourself through rough paths to get back on track. For anyone in debt, take Rudy's words to heart. Some people may see it as rude or whatever, but to get out of debt, most people have to work harder than they could ever imagine they could to get out of it. I've been there. Worked so many jobs, regularly getting free coffee at my bank while I "checked my account" everyday, etc. Getting into debt is easy, which is why getting out is hard, and it's fair. But once you get there, it's worth it. The day you make your last payment on a loan/debt, best days.

    • @WhosTurnIsIt
      @WhosTurnIsIt 5 лет назад +9

      One thing to take away from making that last payment on a vehicle, take care of your vehicle. Do the scheduled maintenances, rotate your tires, change the oil and if something is wrong, bring it in to get it fixed. It will save you more money in the long run versus buying a new vehicle. Trust me, I didn't take care of my last vehicle and it didn't even get past 80k. I had to get a new vehicle and sacrificed all my savings. Be responsible with what you have and take better care of it no matter what it is.

    When I started my own convention, I started it with my best friend. My parents warned me to never go into business with a partner (they were self employed for 25+ years). I didn't listen. I was at least smart enough to listen to my mother and write up a contract between my friend and I that has a clause that either one of us could pull out at any point no questions asked. It eventually came down to me doing all the work and my friend resenting the contact and the fact that I told him to pull some weight. So he pulled out, I said that is what the contract was four but ultimately it did spoil our friendship and I ended up running the business myself but I got to keep the profits. So it is true, DO NOT HAVE PARTNERS. Now I will admit, I do have wonderful parents and a wonderful family who did believe in me and did help me by sacrificing their time to help work my events so I could be successful I was able to run my business long enough to get out of debt. But even then, my mother's words of wisdom were and still are don't have a business unless you can run it yourself by yourself.

    I know this comment is really late but you know, living in Australia, I opened my store putting everything into it. I started from zero, with personal collections and about 5,000 dollars. Over the last 9 months in doing it, I've grown quite well and still growing each and every month. It was down right scary, not knowing what to expect, I live in a country town with 3,000 people and my online store is still growing and so much to still add. I work day and night and have friends who help. I am in no way a success story but I am growing which is the upside. Having experienced the down right lows, I can say that Rudy is right, if you want to do something like this, having 150k and not having partners is really the way you should go about it. I wish I had the money but grew up the first 21 years of my life in hospital and really didn't have much family help but I am proud of where I am. Watching your videos and listening to your past, your highs, your lows, you've been a real inspiration Rudy in me trying to make it for myself. I would not recommend doing what I did even though I succeeded, I am damn lucky and still have a LOOOOOOOONG way to go. Thanks Rudy for your hard work, for the info you provide to your viewers like myself and congratulations on succeeding in creating such a large TCG Business. I sell a lot to kids with Autism and kids from poorer families and run events here, I hope someday I can become in Australia as big as you are in USA. Hi Rudy. Usually I just see your vids and find them good, but this one is GREAT. I have given similar advice to younger people, to own their finances and their decisions. I broke my hobby store after 3 years of killing my competition and still broke it and had all those things, stealing employees, greedy landlords, bickering tournament players, corruption and at last I quit because never had my wife support. Went back to corporate life and I'm doing great, but was a humbling, painful experience. This is great advice to any with the courage to hear it, without the cockiness of i'll do it better and the insight to actually do it better.

One lawsuit and multiple court appearances later she's finally getting some of it back.

    From strictly a business point of view, I agree with most of what you are saying. If all you care about is making money and having a successful business, don't partner or hire employees if you can avoid it. However, not only do I know successful stores with honest employees, it's what you need if you want to provide any service to the community. Try running a 100 person tournament by yourself. I'll wait. Without people playing Magic, all your cards in all your secret little vaults wouldn't be worth shit. This is the wall street investor in you talking, not the person who fell in love with magic. Yes there is risk. You have to take risk to provide anything of value and actually foster a community of players. If it weren't for my LGS that supports formats like Old School 93/94 I wouldn't get very many games in, or even have a reason to collect in the first place. Your model works for you and that's great. I wish you all of the success in the world, and I am not here to hate like some people. But the scope of any business is limited if it's just one person running the whole show. Also, not many people collect and invest the way you do. You represent a very small minority. Life is risk. Grow a pair and follow your passion.

    This video has some really good advice about being self employed, what is required to get there, and what is then required to be self employed successfully. I couldn't help but think of a German idiom that's pretty applicable to the work ethic part of the video. Being self employed translates to "selbstständig" in German, literally: standing on your own. The idiom that results from the term is "selbst und ständig". This translates to "you yourself, all the time", meant in the context of work.

      Just happened to scroll past your comment, thought I would offer an idea. Drink three glasses of water then exercise for :30 minutes as the first thing you do when you get out of bed. You might find yourself no longer wanting the cigs, you'll manufacture your own energy, and you may be in a better mood. Do it for a week see what happens.

    Excellent points.
    When I was ready to stop being afraid, that's when I was ready to succeed. But there was a lot of failure and lessons learned along the way. Sadly I wouldn't have listen to this advice if I didn't experience some of it.
    Fail! Learn! Succeed!

    2:27 I know locally we couldn't get Revised, Wizards printed like 320 million of Fallen Empires, when core set finally did come back it was 4th edition with a ban list right on the tail of it. Fallen Empires were going for $1 a pack, it's all we could get, they were jank at the time, but sure, next big thing, but we are up here in Atlantic Canada so it's quite possible that at this time other places had nothing but choice on what packs they wanted to buy. The mall amount of Revised the local bookstore had got opened and Inquest Prices singles were born.

    But i paid my dues, and have never taken anything since i have. This is real and neccessary advice.
