- This is an update on my experience with darksiding My 2012 Suzuki Burgman 650 executive and how the car tire looks after 10,000 miles of riding. Thanks for all of your support and feedback. Without that this channel would not be viable.

I think I might consider letting it wear thru the box a little ….and then cut away a portion of the box and rebuilding the box from the inside so that it cant rub anymore. Im sure you can get the correct plastic/nylon material for the job. Then seal it with a Vulkem 116 Polyurethane Sealant, and then some good pop rivets. Just rebuild the box so its impossible to rub.
30,000 miles running a CT on my 2007 Exe. Love it so much. Never going back to motorcycle tire. Same for my Goldwing.
They are definitely awesome and last a long time👍🏻
Something had to be wearing out , I don't think tire's grow taller ?
Suspension getting weaker ?
Threatened by the X-Men for darksiding ?
My overloaded scooter weighed about 500 lbs not including my weight ( carried more stuff than a Goldwing )
I traveled around the USA using 2 tear tire and 1 front tire 20000 miles total
I got 10000 miles out of rear tire new with tube inside
The tires were slick as a drag racing tire
You could get air adjustable shocks to give yourself enough clearance so the tire didn't rub. Just my opinion.
I have a Federal 165/60/14 H75 on my 650B. It's been on it for a little over 4 years now and traveled 12000klms + . Still looks like new doesn't wear on anything at all on the scooter. No disrespect Larry but I reckon you used the wrong size tyre. I've been riding Darkside since 1990. Over that time I made the same mistake as you, twice but fortunately I noticed before I actually took the bike out of my workshed. I was able to take them off both times and go and swap them for a the next lower profile . Just a pain having to do the job again. (The the joys of found all your own maintenance hehehe)The Darksiders motorcycle tyre guide I found that to be a little unreliable so I've only taken them as an approximation. Hope Wes didn't take his off as I reckon he would be having no problems and enjoying the benefits of darksiding. Hope you give it another try. I'm sure your roads there are a fraction better than we have here in Australia our highways are good but some B roads can give you a workout. Safe and enjoyable riding cobber
I put 10,000 miles on that tire that I had and was not disappointed. I would have to agree that I probably had the wrong size tire but it was challenging finding the correct tire so I have temporarily went back to a motorcycle tire. But I’m not against dark siding and will probably do it again in the future. Thanks for watching and stay safe in the land down under👍🏻
I have never thought about purchasing a car tire for any of the motorcycles I've owned
I didn't either at one time. Now, three of my four bikes run a car tire on the rear.
use a heat gun push plastic out of way.
Should have gone down to a 155/55x14 tyre. Only just a touch smaller than that Shinko. So more clearance.
Real men darkside the front tire too
50% is better than nothing I guess🤣
Thanks for the great videos. I steal your ideas often. My 2006 Burgman and I appreciate you and Wes. Paid 2500$. Had 2100 miles. I'm in Texas. Bike in Florida. Cost 500$ to have it shipped. 45,000 miles now. Owned it 4 years. I'm riding it. I'm 73. Arthritis, yes I do. This bike keeps me riding and alive.
That is awesome!
Almost be willing to bet, the sidewall plys started moving around or dellaminating, car tires are not really meant to take the camber a bike can generate. I guess maybe I should say I could care less about people who darkside tires, but fundamentally your getting less grip and I don't even have to go into contact patch to prove that, the fact your using a tire designed and constructed to support the weight of a car for 10s of thousands of miles means the compound is going to be hard, hard tire compounds just don't grip real well, what we talk about as grip, is the ability of the tire compound to deform to the road surface, if the compound is too hard it doesn't do this, and is also a reason why motorcycle tires are so soft. With that said, there are motorcycle tires, especially on that scooter that should last 14k miles or more, it's just like the tires on my z900 I could run my q3+ Dunlops get grip to spare, or spend another 50 bucks and get less grip and twice the mileage. I commute 70 miles round trip everyday rain or shine, and I wouldn't put a car tire on my back if you paid me, paid for the bike, and paid my insurance.... just too dangerous, from just the handling issue, to having to use more front wheel input and consequently wearing out more front tires, to car tires not having a compatable bead structure and can spontaneously self disassemble,. No thank you, but hey you do you, but I sure wouldn't be recommending dark siding to anyone.
Thanks for the information 👍🏻
Hahahahaha Motorcycle. Be careful on that Hog, now. that's a whole lotta "Bike" lol
Great video as usual. FYI...the American flag on the back wall of the garage is hanging backwards. When presenting a flag in that orientation, the stars are on the left. Again, great video.
that same shinko sized car tire did NOT fit onto my 2003 burgmann 650 OEM rim. It may work on newer larger sized OEM rims on the burgmann 650, but NO way was it fitting even at 120psi POP onto the rim was too small did not seal onto the rim of a 2003. Really wanted it to work seeing as how get easily 20K miles out of a car tire vs. say 6-9K miles on a cycle rear tire, but wasted 50 bucks or so, oh well.
I had a tire shop at work with me online so I didn’t mount it they did. Sorry to hear that didn’t work out.
I really enjoy your video but I would like it if you turn your flag around so the stars were on the left side that's the proper way to display American flag😮
That was my dumb friends flag and he corrected that mistake 🤪🇺🇸
Well it's pretty obvious he's never very nice to u, probably a set up, LOL. I look forward to seeing it in a future video. So what were chatting as I weigh 130 lb and I've got a 08 AN 650, Almost always ride solo. You think I should put a darkside tire on the back, I really like to lean that baby over in turrns and am concerned I'd wipe out. I'm not a mechanic side pay out the ass to have that stuff serviced
@@jeffreywilson5478 I’m back to a regular scooter tire just because of that. I never felt concerned I the twisties but I ran into rubbing issues.
I'm still darksiding and I don't have a problem with rubbing anymore because I put 1.5 inch extender on my rear shocks.
That sounds awesome👍🏻
That sounds awesome👍🏻
Where did you get the extender from ?
I welded it myself, however you can buy them online, just don't buy the cheap ones.@@happytrucker1000
I had dark sided mine for the last 3 years I owned it. It's not like you buy a burgman to drag your knees in the turns. When I decided to change out my front tire myself (always just had it done) I tried to find an allen wrench to fit it and could not at about 5 hardware stores. So I decided I'd just order one of the interwebs when I got home. I got home and started to then I said to myself "Self... you're a blacksmith, forge yourself one!" And that's what I did, I forged one out of a tine on a fertilizer applicator of some kind. Nice long handle, fit tighter than one you can buy. I let it go with the Burgman. Have a goodern...
Thanks for the video/info. I've been wondering how the tire was working out. Is there an easy way to extend the shock mounts an inch or so like they do on Harley trikes?
Russel Allen I’ve also thought of something like that too but just haven’t researched it in depth. Someone suggested air shocks. Just not sure if there are any that would work. Thanks again for your thoughts and input 👍🏻
14 michelin tire 160x60x14 pilot road 4 sc mileage 35,00 to 40,000 Price $151.78
Thanks for the info👍🏻
I did that and headed to ft.smith Arkansas to Branson mo.and home in s.ohio when I got 80 or 85 it tried to get speed wobble never again
Sorry to hear that I never had any issues with mine.
Yeah I like your video I think that you may have went with just a little bit too large of a tire it makes me think if you would have went with a tire a little bit smaller size that maybe that would not have happened
So true I was struggling finding the right tire to fit that who knows I may switch back again someday.
Seems just putting a smaller tire on would work. Sometimes its trial & error to find the right fit. For the better traction, longer treadwear I would definitely stay darkside. I went double dark... put a battleaxe bt45 on the front... but got a REAR tire in my front tire size. Better traction. Ultimately you gotta do what makes you a confident rider. That's what biking is about - independence and customization. Ride safe brother ✊
maybe shocks got old
Lower profile on the car tire perhaps? The tire you had on was a 65. The bike tire Wes put was a 60. Just saying.
At the time it was challenging to find any different profiles in the size that would fit..
Hello Larry-I darkside because did and used the same tire as you. I have had no problems with wear or rubbing. Do you think you might need new shocks? Thanks for the review. Dennis
Dennis Staub I’m probably just fatter than you are🤣 we also haul a lot of gear!
How about lifting the springs with a little blok or something ?
I thought about that, but I didn’t revisit it.
you need to find a tire closer to the right size. I found one for my silver wing 1/4 inch taller and 1/4 inch wider. and when my tire wears out I will be going to the dark side on the scooter also. but silverwings use 13 on the rear and 14 on the front.
@Matthew Hoopes the last one I got with my old silverwing was a Achilles Platinum 155/70 R13. and it lasted until I sold it about 35k and it still looked good. and that's what I will be putting on my new one when they tire wears out
@Matthew Hoopes oh and you can find them at walmart
You can use a car tire to replace Rear Tire on Cam Am Spider or Ryker it will work just fine and last much longer....
Absolutely 👍🏻
Hey guys your flag is hanging backwards.
Copy that. I told Wes that and it was corrected. 👍🏻🇺🇸
Are there better motorcycle tires that would last longer?
Yes some tires last longer than others it really depends on the compound of rubber that the tires made of and what you are using it for. And that takes just researching it online to find out what one will fit your needs best.
Wes is like me when it comes to tires. I run'em right down to the canvas I just changed my first tire on my burgman. one thing I found that gives people like wes and I a bit of an advantage is to put a inner tube on is side the tire as well so that when you do get down to the canvas you will have that little bit of extra to get you by until you can replace the tire.
I’ve never heard of that. Thanks for the info. And yes Wes does run them down to the cords🤣
Those are nice bikes.
Do they make them for men?
Just for your mom🤣
You need to Darkside the front as well.
I need to start riding the old scoot. I haven’t been for a while. Too many bikes.😂
People in my country earn 800€ / mouth and they can still afford moto tires. So why? why?
I appreciate your videos. They are educational and entertaining at the same time.
Warren Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching👍🏻
So the problem with car tires is their rubbage
That was the problem I had I could’ve probably corrected that by doing some modifications but just didn’t wanna go down that path.
So did you ever check your springs on your shocks? I'm thinking the springs maybe sagging and the shinko`s aren't going to fix that.
Springs are in perfect condition 0 sag.
I almost wonder if a smart car tire would fit. Some of the smallest tires I've seen and iirc only the smart uses them an no one seems to have them in stock (always have to order them) so might be worth looking into. They are two different sizes (front is smaller than the back so look at both)
Deckard Cain Thank you sir. That is an option. I just wonder if the rim size is the same🛵
Isnt that front tire directional? Wouldn't that mean you have to run it backwards? I.E. double darkside?
Not sure. Only rand the rear tire.
Your flag on the wall is hung backwards. It’s supposed to be stars and bars. Not bars and stars.
Yes I’m aware of that I told Wes. He wears his shoes on the wrong feet too🤣🇺🇸
@@ManCaveMayhem , LOL! For the record, I wasn’t trying to be rude or disrespectful. But being a 15 yr Navy vet, seeing a flag being improperly displayed makes me twitch! LOL! 🤷🏻♂️😊
@@Navyguy1990 I didn’t take it that way. My father too was a Navy vet from WW2. Thank for your service and thanks again for watching.🇺🇸
First of all Burgman is not even a real motorcycle. It's a big scooter. End of that story
That will go 💯 +mph😜
@@ManCaveMayhem I understand. It has a huge engine. I have owned a many scooters I'm sorry I should not have said that. I meant no disrespect ...But to The Darkside side one that's a whole different story man
Bobby Franklin Got it. I didn’t take offense. I’ve had plenty of motorcycles too. The Darksided scoot did well and I ran that tire for over 10,000 miles with great results. The main reason I changed it out was due to clearance issues.
The car tire you were using was about 2 inches taller than your stock tire??!! 2 inches difference?? Wow!! Had to of had a tremendous effect of your power and cruising ability. When you went back to a bike tire, you must have felt you lost top gear. An inch or so is a nice overdrive. But 2 inches?? You were rubbing because you were running such a tall tire.
it improved my inaccurate speedo problems. No noticeable power issues. Just slight rubbing problems. I put 10k miles on it with little to no wear.
I put alot of miles on Citygrips in the wet on my 300cc machine and they were superb. From my understanding they were not intended for heavyweight machines.
Yeah, it seems like results vary depending on bikes and conditions.
My first darkside rubbed...traded out for a shorter aspect ratio and problem solved. If your M/C tire is a 60, a darkside conversion needs to be closer to 50.
UG _ TTMC Thanks for the info on that. I will have to research that when it comes time to swap it out👍🏻
@@ManCaveMayhem if you put a 195/65/16 M/C tire side by side with a 195/65/16 car tire, the car tire will stand "taller". An additional lesson learned, anything less than a V rated tire has sidewall stability issues. That first darkside after i got the aspect ratio figured out fit properly, but rubbed the swing arm above 70. The reason was the tire sidewalls of lower speed ratings 'stand-up' at higher speed, creating more rubbing issues. I kept the car tire size but went to a V rated, and can run triple digit speeds without an issue.
UG _ TTMC Other than the rubbing I was very happy with the tire and it’s performance. Thanks for the information.
Well done video. I am currently using the same tire Wes was using and experienced a little tire rub on the bottom of the cargo box. I watch it and plan to keep using it. My annual mileage would have me changing the rear tire three times per year. I too have not experienced any other problem with the car tires. For me it comes down to just mileage that will make my decision when my current rear tire needs to be replaced. Great work on the video. Thanks Larry.
Ken Nolte Ken Nolte thanks for your input. I always enjoy your comments👍🏻
How was cornering with this tyre?
Is the Darkside car tire more prone to rubbing on certain years of the 650? My new tires are going on this Tuesday, with a Federal Formosa FD2 155/65R14 in back. Have not heard of this problem from other Darksiders on BurgmanUSA site, most guys there who are darksiding are doing so on the 2012 and earlier bikes. Mine is a 2012. Had you set your rear shocks to setting 5?
BoulderCreek Steve Yes my shocks were set to the #5 setting and my bike is a 2012 executive model. My wife occasionally rode on the back and I carried lots of gear so maybe that’s why it was occurring.😎
ManCave Mayhem Do you know if this problem is specific to certain years of the 650, and not to others?
BoulderCreek Steve I thinks the are very similar. I’ve heard that some people run them with no problems so I’m 🤔 not sure.
Hey Larry I'm looking at a 2007 650 executive for $2,500 with 47,000 miles. What are your thoughts. What ? should I be asking the owner
Jeffrey Rowell I would really try and look for the newest bike with the lowest miles and then try and find out what service was performed o it and check for paperwork or documentation of the work performed. They made improvements to the drive belt on those in the later years. I think starting in 2012. I hope this helps.
@@ManCaveMayhem Yes it helps, TY for your response I trust your judgment
How did the Shickco tires work out
For the price they are a pretty good tire. They do cup out over time.
I USED A SLIGHTLY SMALLER CAR TIRE ON MY BERGMAN AND THERE WAS NO RUBBING .. I LOVE THIAT CAR TIRE.. SO STILL DARKSIDING......
Thanks for watching and ride safe👍🏻
What size was the smaller sized tire that you used?
How about increasing the height of the shocks behind slightly and / or adding some protection like a sticker or some other coating on the underside and continue the darksiding for some more time before switching back
I’ve thought of that. I think a different size tire would be the way to go. Not sure about the shock height but someone suggested that you use a heat gun on the inner fender and push it out of the way which may work.
How many miles on your 2012 650 Bergman? looking at a similar model myself with 8400 mi.
I’m pushing close to 14,000 now and it runs great I would stick with the later models though like 2012 and on because I’ve heard they’ve made improvements to the belt.
Try a winter tire next time... they work better
It was mostly a size fitment issue
There are some great options on ebay with a more founded profile... I would love to see you try again. Thank you for the great content!
Took my newly acquired 03 650 in for inspection and tires passed, but barely. I asked about darksiding and the owner said he would not recommend it and will not do it for legal reasons. After seeing this video I ordered a front & back Shinko tire for mine and will try to change them myself. My question is, do they need to be balanced? I do mainly in town and back road riding but occasionally go on highway trips with sustained speeds of 70 + MPH. BTW, I LOVE this scooter and my wife has a 400 that she loves also. Keep up the videos. THANKS!
I ran quite a few tires on mine and all of them were unbalanced and they work just fine.
As long as the tire is dot approved there are no legal issues.
@@edman79 IF I can find another rear wheel, I'll mount it myself and put it on a little later. He'll change the 2 I,ve bought on Wednesday.
Balancing isn't that hard.
Sir , I was wondering if you have a video on changing the sparkplug on the Burgman. Thanks.
osi lara I do not but that will be coming soon👍🏻
Are you using the all weather or summer tire?
I believe the car tire was an all weather.
Did you guys think of shaping the edges to make the tire more like a MC tire?
This is a stupid comment…
Hi from Malaysia...
I'm using pirelli angel scooter 140/70 r14 for the rear tire for my burgman.
The original 160/60 r14 is hard to come by and very expensive.
I could get a set of front and rear pirelli angel scooter for less than 1 battlax front tyre!
So far, performing well economically...
thanks for the vidio i come from Denmark i have a lot of tire options in the right size so i am doing it.. just have to paint the wheels first
spassser good luck. I hope it all works out. Ride safe and thanks for watching 😎
I suspect that your shock bushings are worn. You can lose 1/2 inch of clearance as the rubber is compressed and doesn't recover.
How was it in the wet?
I didn’t notice any difference between it and regular motorcycle tire when it came to rain
How was the cornering on it ?
U should both tires. Front and rear.
jay Tarantula that would be cool!
Did you get Wes lunch after this video was made.
Bob Grabowski yes as a matter fact I did! Got to feed the beast🤣
Love your cave
I ride a Gold Wing and will Darkside next year after my bike gets fixed. Anyway, I had Shinko tires before and they a sticky tire, great grip. Kenda Kruz is a great tire, I’ve even had them on my Monte Carlo. When I had Kendas on my Yamaha Roadstar I got 13,000 miles out of them.
Como se te ocurre poner esa llanta a un scooter
I put the Federal Formoza on per your endorsement last year, on a trip to Nevada, over 5k round trip with panniers, top box and an 5-gal aux fuel tank on the pillion seat I did rub two holes in the underseat box. I've done one repair to reseal it but no long trip with all the gear yet. I will keep repairing the box as needed to keep the CT's on, 6k miles on a rear tire is BS...I'm getting 9k+ on the Battleaxe front tire, looking forwarded to your review on the other tire.
Keep Up the Mayhew!
Why your US Bergman's has no immobiliser system like European and Japanese skywave?
How difficult is it to remove the rear tire?? Do you have a tutorial??
I don’t know if I’ve done a video on that yet you’ll have to check in my videos if not I will try and get one posted. Thanks for watching.
@@ManCaveMayhem thank you!! Your videos are awesome. Thanks for all the tips. Greetings from San Diego Ca
Guys, nice video, but you need a motorcycle...
It real cheap to avoid the rubbing but I’m not a fan of darksiding so 🙊
Hey Larry... Love the channel. I am a local SoCal guy as well & an owner of a 2013 Burgman 650. your videos have helped me out so much with maintaining my scooter & was really looking forward to darksiding. I am still going forward with it & was just wondering if you were interested in selling with your tire so I can see how it works for me? I am in LA & use my Burgman mainly for commuting in LA traffic. Also the tire place who can install for me... Thanks & stay safe through these times!
UPDATE:GOT MY TIRE, BUT THEY COULDN'T GET IT TO BEAD UP TO THE RIM. IF YOU GET A CHAN CAN YOU SEND ME THE NAME OF THE PLACE YOU USED TO INSTALL YOUR TIRE? THANKS AGAIN.

Thanks for watching.
I tried to mount the Federal Forenza 165/55-14, which is the proper diameter/width 21" same as Burgman, the 165/65-14 are actually a 22" diameter explains the rub issue. I could not seat the bead with tire lube, simple green, lanolin hand cleaner, silicone lube, couldnt' get the last 1/4 of the bead to seat up to 140 PSI, sawall the tire off and trashed it.
A tire shop mounted mine
Curious to know how your Shinkos have lasted since 2019.
@@aliceshaw8265 Mine got only 2800, both front and rear on a VT1100T. Our temps are 30C and above all year long though.

Can you stop calling your Mopeds "motorcycles" :)
Its a 650 cc not a moped,mopeds are under 300 cc
@@ed9603 ok sorry, scooters. Can you please stop calling your scooters "motorcycles" you know dang well they are not motorcycles.
@@repurposedperformance5762 Anything on two wheels with an engine and motor is a motorcycle. What do we register these things in the DMV as? Motorcycles, right? A Clutch Bike is a clutch bike. A scooter is Still a Motorcycle.
@@LSwaggy that’s incorrect. Mopeds are registered as “Scooter” and motorcycles are registered as “motorcycles” and anything under 50cc and has 2 wheels is registered as “OHV”. Which is why mopeds DO NOT require a motorcycle endorsement because they are NOT motorcycles.
@@repurposedperformance5762 wrong again. Anything over 50ccs (or a limited class motorcycle) in New York state is a "Motorcycle". Stop that bullshit that Scooters aren't. You're a flatout Hater.
My big question would be.... does a motorcycle tire have more stickyness (just made that up)? So when you are leaning the bike is less likely to slide out. I would think so since they wear out so quickly.
No. The car tire actually flexes with the bike and you maintain more contact patch.
You say Potenza, I say Potahnza.
Let's call the whole thing off
What I want to know is did Suzuki quit making the Bergman 650 motor scooter ? Ifso when and do you know if there’s any plans to bring it back?
ThreePhaseHigh From what I’ve read they’re making a 2021 Suzuki Burgman but I don’t know if it will be imported into the US or not. Hope this helps. thanks for watching.
Buy a kumko
No they didnt stop.
Just bought a 650 with a dark side which had been slid down both sides. Am changing back to a motorcycle tire because they are softer, stickier rubber. As one tire shop explained: you want an erraser soft enough to errase, not one so hard that it never wears out. I don't trust darkside braking traction on a corner. Darkside surface contact while upright is great, so mileage is great too.
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the input 👍🏻
This is why you buy a winter tire if you darkside
