- Dark magic, tribal traditions and the shadow of a mighty empire that once covered all of the World of Warcraft. The Darkspear Trolls are a splinter of the Gurubashi tribe, which was itself a part of the all-encompassing Zandalari Empire.
But how and why did such a mighty empire that had existed since the very dawn of Azeroth fall into ruin, a scattered whisper of what it once was? And more importantly, how did the Darkspear find themselves as stalwart allies of the Horde?

Time for some Darkspear Troll lore! Researching for this video was an eye-opener. Even after all these years, my Troll knowledge was a bit sparse, but the more I read, the more I couldn't stop reading.
What a fascinating race, both in terms of their ancient history and grand empires, and the tribal, magical aspects that underpin their culture. Really hope you enjoy this one, and if you have a favourite Troll tribe, let me know which one in the comments, and why!

The Trolls are my favorite race, and stumbling upon a new channel talking about them was a treat. My Favorite are the Ice Trolls from the Winterax or Drakkari, if I could play as them I would.
The Darkspear did not come from the Broken Isles, just a few remote islands off the coast of the south sea.
Vol'jin promising not to permit the darker aspects of Troll culture such as cannibalism was always funny to me. I'd like to imagine many trolls crossing their fingers as they promised, but continued to carry on doing so. And although I don't remember if this counts as sacrifice but may very well be, Vol'jin in Shadows of the Horde noticed several Trolls he killed begrudgingly being taken into Bwonsamdi's care after he killed them which is hilarious.

@@TenMinuteWorlds I hope you do make a video on the Drakkari! I always found their story to be tragic and epic. Players definitely remember the events when the Lich Kings Undead Scourge attacked the Alliance and Horde in their home cities, now imagine those attacks being full force and unrelenting on the Drakkari's front door.
They may have been hostile, but through sheer determination and desperation managed to hold off the Scourge! Unfortunately at the great cost of sacrificing their Loa. I wish I could see Zul'Drak before it was ravaged by the Scourge. It's size and majesty would rival Zuldazar!

Once you go troll, you never reroll! I mained a troll shaman for most of vanilla and got back into him for BFA and beyond. They are easily in the top ranks of my preferred player races.
I even had the fun honor of playing one in the old Warcraft tabletop RPG for a few years!

Great job tackling the story of the trolls. I think you did an excellent job covering the major points without diving too deep! I have played since Vanilla and switched my main in Cata to a Darkspear Troll Druid named Jiyj, and have stuck with him over every other race due to the history of the trolls. My favorite tribe has been the Drakkari since they were introduced in WOTLK and hated that they never became playable or utilized again. I loved the story of them fighting their hardest all alone against the dual threat of the Nerubians and the Scourge up in Northrend. Sadly, it ended in failure as they ended up enslaving and sacrificing their Loa in order to try and fight off their enemies. I always felt bad as a player killing off the last few Drakkari in that expansion and was glad when I saw Speaker Malaka'raz "the last Drakkari" added in BFA. It actually inspired me to roll up my Death Knight who I named Shindrak (shin: "true" and drak: "drakkari"), who I wrote a backstory for. Basically, he was a Drakkari prince who was killed while defending his people from the Scourge and then raised into undeath by the Lich King. I still keep hope that they will become a playable race at some point in the future!
Those Zandalar Troll Death Knights look pretty sick with their high end armor .

It's interesting, so many people seem to have the Drakkari as their favourite Troll tribe, to the point that I'm wondering if they deserve their own video further down the line :D I also really like the fact that you're digging into the lore for accurate character names and writing whole character backstories, I do that too. I wonder if they'll ever become playable with the way allied races are going... but at the same time, perhaps they'll become a customization for existing Trolls instead? The same way they've added Quel'dorei and Eredar customizations. We take what we can get!

Great overview of the Troll race... they have always been one of my fav's and have an interesting past history with many different versions of trolls nowadays based on their tribe and where they settled. According to the lore, Trolls are one of the most ancient races and the elves like night elf are all an evolution from trolls into a very different looking race because of the influence of the moonwell and all that. The troll dungeons/raids are always fun to play thru, and its basically a long tradition in WoW to always have atleast one troll dungoen/raid in each xpac.
I think their history of shamanism as well as mixing it with voodoo is pretty interesting. I also love the LOA spirits, and wish we knew more about them... they seem like an interesting group of tribal animalistic gods that were worshipped by the Trolls for various reasons, sometimes even getting blessings and power from worshipping the loas. I can imagine a new class in a future xpac that is like voljin's shadow hunter and they use LOAS to gain power, with each spec having a certain loa that they focus on and channel. I imagine either hunter ranger style play, or melee with polearms or staffs.... much like the current version of survival hunter being a melee class..... but you have Loa spirits who would assist you and help you fight instead of an animal pet.
The race itself has some good racials so its always a decent choice for certain classes. I play Enhancement Shaman, so troll is a good choice cause of the bserking racial haste bonus.... but I personally hate the hunchback look tho, which is why I am glad that they added the new Zandalari version of the troll race, cause they stand up straight and look pretty good. I usually stick to orc for horde or dwarf for alliance if I play shaman, but am curious to try out the xandarlari troll race... they even have a racial that can change based on the Loa you pick to get one of a variety of buffs.
I love the ambience of this video like a wise woman telling stories of old to a younger generation. It was a very relaxing way to listen to WoW lore and I loved every moment. Your voice is very soothing to listen to

Darkspear Trolls are cool, also being O.Gs. from Warcraft 3. But in WoW, Blizzard barely updates their lore and customizations therefor leaving them stale compared to other Horde races...

Yesss, please don't let them drop Trolls completely after the heritage armour quest. I hope it'll just be the start of them focusing on updating Troll lore after it's been so patchy for so long. I am curious to see what transpires with Vul'jin now that the Loa, Rezan, has merged with his soul. That was one of the few lore moments in Shadowlands I really appreciated.

Troll characters were my first love in WoW. I do love the Tauren as well for similar reasons (lore), but Troll just have such a great vibe. i wish they had a little more customization, and I am sad they edited the troll jokes though.

The only thing I have trouble understanding is after releasing Kilixth why did he immediately attack when he clearly had a large population of believers he could have used better before assaulting.
It's a really good question - did Kith'ix really dislike the Trolls that much that he couldn't hold himself back and just needed to go directly for them? Maybe we'll never know. Thanks for watching!

Also you were incorrect about the Raventusk they are one of the only other friendly Troll tribes on Zuldazar all the others hated the Darkspear for not joining. Theres a village called Raventusk village in the Hinterlands it’s a Forrest Troll village they are a part of the Horde.

You know, that's an awesome idea - I'd definitely be up for mixing in some D&D lore, I love the game and the worldbuilding. I've only really gotten into Warhammer in the last year or so, and my lore knowledge there is pretty minimal, but maybe that's a good reason to make videos on it. It's a good way to learn! @@TenMinuteWorlds Warhammer lore is pretty deep. I once thought that WoW's lore is deeper, didn't realize the RPG side is so chuck full of lore, that the Warhammer wiki is as detailed as first the Warcraft Wiki, before the Gamepedia one, so extremely outdated, not to mention the recent Warcraft gg one.
I tried touching DnD, spelljammer killed it for me, lol. I thought it was an Ilithid only thing which made them horrific, now, they're horrific, but they're free estate too, lol. BG3 is still a masterpiece, despite my loss of interest though 😤.
Would've recommended Dragon Age lore as well, but the views aren't that great, maybe when DA 4 comes out, or announced, you could make some lore on it, maybe the almighty algorithm would recommend your vids more. Same with the Elder Scrolls.

You're not wrong, with everything we know about their lore and culture, it'd make sense. Maybe the devs didn't think about it at the time, but I'm convinced that every WoW race will eventually be able to be every class - with at least some ties back to the lore to explain it. We'll see if they ever make that a thing, I think Troll Warlock would be a pretty cool combination!

Right? I admit they're not my favourite of the WoW races, but that doesn't mean they don't still have fascinating lore stretching back a long way. I'll still be making a video on them in the future!
