  • 1998 4Runner SR5 V6 with about 170,256 miles on the clock failed Colorado Emissions because of high NOx values.
Fix: 7 bottles of gas line drier Heet, and 1 bottle of Guaranteed to Pass in a 1/2 tank of fuel.
    Background:
    Before failed test:
    Replaced both O2 sensors
New Cat, muffler, and exhaust piping
Recent oil change, with oil filer
    Recent fuel filter
1/2 used air filter still good
    1 year old injectors
1 year old spark plugs and wires
    Newer belts
    Hoses are ok
    New radiator coolant
    New power steering fluid
    Brand new Optima battery
Else all in good maintenance condition.
1 attempted it failed because of high NOx values which means high combustion temps. Bad EGR, bad cats, poor maintenance.
Vehicle does not have EGR valve, and the cats are brand new
Also tested when the engine and outside temp was hot. Outside temp 96 degrees
    Failed values:
    Tested temp: 96 degrees outside
    HC: 0.4222 Limits: 1.200 Pass
    CO: 3.0041 Limits: 15.0000 Pass
    CO2: 410.7751
    NOx: 2.6018 Limits: 2.5000 FAIL
    Passed Values:
    Tested temp: 76 degrees outside
    HC: 0.4664 Limits: 1.200 Pass
    CO: 2.3501 Limits: 15.0000 Pass
    CO2: 428.0696
    NOx: 2.0092 Limits: 2.5000 Pass
What did I do differently? My Trick?
    Changed the air filter
Tested in the morning when the outside temp was 76 degrees
Added the following to a 1/2 tank of fuel
Added 6 bottles of gas line drier Heet (Yellow bottle)
Added 1 bottle of gas line drier Heet with fuel injector cleaner (Red bottle)
Added 1 bottle of Guaranteed to Pass
Everything else all the normal suspects were recently replaced.
If you have high NOx: Go to the test station when it is cooler, make sure all your maintenance is recent, good O2, and cats, etc
If you have high HC or CO this is the usual fix:
New Air, oil, and fuel filters
    Oil change
Spray the MAF with MAF cleaner
    Flush your engine coolant
Pump up your tires to max or slightly higher psi (less rolling resistance)
    Replace your O2 sensors
    Replace your Cats and muffler
    Replace vacuum lines hoses
Add 6 - 8 bottles of Heet (yellow bottle) to a 1/2 tank of fuel
Take it hot and in hot weather
I have over 30 years experience dealing with the Colorado Emissions games of passing cars and either those fixes work for me.
Once your car reaches over 25 yrs get collector plates and no more #$% emissions.
    Experience:
1970 Chevelle: Full tune up, Heet, and it passed!
1983 Olds Full size with 5.0 L notorious for failing. A big name auto shop could not get it to pass. One weekend my dad and I replaced vacuum hoses, 8 bottles of Heet, new plugs and it passed!
1989 Ford Towncar in Los Angeles failed. I had a local shop replace the O2 sensor, tune up, and 6 bottles of Heet and it passed!
1998 4Runner all new sensors, cats, filters etc, with 7 bottles of Heet it passed!
After you get your car tuneup replace spark plugs and wires, oil change, new air filter, new fuel filter, new O2 sensors, new cats, and fluid changes if it still does not pass use Heet.
    Good luck

That guaranteed to pass works extremely well in our case. Have a 04 Jeep Wrangler. I had replaced all the O2 sand was still throwing in catalyst efficiency codes. Put a bottle in a fuel tank of 93 octain and drove it. The light went off and has stayed off. I to keep all the fluids changed the plugs every 30, 000k. I do the fuel injection service on it and clean the throttle body as well. In my opinion that stuff works quite well and I have recommended it several times to people.

    Hi
I live in Denver like u and recently failed a third time for nox. I was at 1.7 gpm. Changed the plugs so then 1.68. Then I took to an emissions tech and they fuel trims and o2 sensors look good and rear o2 sensors indicate maybe cats are bad. I changed right bank cat myself 2 years ago due to p0420 code before all these standards changed. It's an epa compliant cat. Then just now I changed the left bank cat to a carb compliant one. Still failed nox at 1.5765 gpm. Just unbelievable. So my question is can the heet trick work since I'm basically less than 8 hundredths away? Or do I need to update the epa cat to a carb one? I'm concerned the cats won't fix this. I don't have an egr valve on my 02 nissan pathfinder but have an egr solenoid. I don't think I have a vacuum leak. I figured the emissions shop would have told me if I did. Thoughts?

Change out the EGR solenoid if you can. I think the cats are fine. Good that you changed out the O2 sensors. I know the heet nudged my numbers. This year I tried colder heat range plugs which helped. Also try to go on a really cold day or in the morning. My 4Runner does not have an EGR so I do not have any experience changing out. I know it is really @#$ frustrating they changed the standards without telling anyone. Also try that other stuff I put in my tank. You might try to go to a different station I think they may not be fully calibrated between stations. Sorry I could not provide much more. Good luck

You can purchase Heet from O'reiley or Autozone, or Walmart...The only stock a few bottles until Winter, so you may need to go to different stores to get a large quantity.
I recently had to go through emissions test with the same 4Runner for this year. I tried using colder heat range spark plugs and nothing else and it worked well.
I think the stuff in the tank is a quick fix to nudge the numbers in your favor, but a better fix maybe colder spark plugs and of course new air filter, recent oil change, no vacuum leaks, sensors good, no trouble codes...Good luck.
I know it is flipping frustrating they lowered the numbers without telling anyone...

    • @denverhomestead1003
      @denverhomestead1003  3 года назад +1

Good question. I like overkill. Actually the intended purpose for the Heet is to dry out any water in the system so yes 1 bottle to treat 20 gallons is correct. However, from my personal experiences (over 30 yrs) in dealing with emissions (in both CO and CA and old cars) is more alcohol to burn cleaner. It always helped me. So far I have not experienced any negative effects of using 6 bottles or more.

Check the basics: Tune up new spark plugs, new spark plug wires, oil change, new oil filter, new air filter, and new fuel filter. 02 sensors check or replace. Check or replace all vacuum lines. New gas cap. Clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner. Clean the throttle bottle with spray cleaner.
I have heard hig NOX is caused by high temps. Make sure the fan and cooling system is good. Check fuel pump pressure. Some research says low fuel pump pressure or bad fuel regulator could cause high NOX.

  • @btwbrand

Old video, this truck failed emissions because the mileage is too good. The engine is running slightly lean and in great condition. This causes the fuel to burn hotter and cleaner resulting in more expansion of the air in the cylinder and more work being done per injection of fuel. This is an ideal condition to have but because of NOx being regulated it failed because it is running too well and creating NOx which only exists in the air for about a day before the sun breaks it down. The way to pass this test is to cause the engine to run richer and use more fuel making the engine burn less efficiently and cooler which will increase the other pollution readings but decrease the NOx reading.
It's completely backwards from what should be the goal. To have the most efficient engine you would want the highest NOx readings but people who don't understand engines are in charge of deciding what amount of tailpipe emissions are okay and a great vehicle like this fails.
You can also create a bad restriction in the intake system and pass emissions then remove the restriction. A very dirty air filter would make this truck pass.

Excellent, excellent reply! I totally agree with you!
Yep my 1998 4Runner (well maintained) still experiences the same. I recently June 2024, took 4 re-tries to pass. All of the new cars are computer controlled, so you cannot (aside from a CPU reprogramming) change anything (timing, rich/lean) like you could in the old days. It is very, very annoying! In addition, they lowered the limits so those with old cars struggle to play the emissions game. Exactly like you said with NOx.
I recently spent about $900 in fuel additives, and replacement parts: MAF, spark plugs, vacuum hoses, new air duct from filter box to throttle body, both O2, air filter, and PCV. Just to get it to squeak by to barely pass. It is very frustrating because it is a well maintained vehicle.
Oh: After I failed the 3 time: I took it to a special Emissions Training facility for them to look at it. Although it was a free inspection. They said I need a CA CARB CAT.
