    When super smart people are also gifted, determined, creative, and nice-It’s a rare combination, and Oteil is that combination.

    Every bassist should watch this. I've been working on a 4 string for a few years, played a 6 at a shop the other day and fell in love. Binging these types of videos and it's making me feel so much better about my love for the 6.

    Best thing I've got from this vid: "Stealing is the only way of learning, but you have to steal from 100 cats instead of one."- I was struggling with the idea of transcribing music to learn, I thought it would just make me sound like others, but Oteil has made it clear.

    I've watched A LOT of bass videos and interviews and this one is by far one of the best and deepest discussion of the role of the bassist within music. The bit at 21:44 is especially poignant about finding your own voice. No need to sound someone else!

    I've read so many comments saying how cool and down to earth OB is; interesting enough, most of the really accomplished bassists I've met are cool. Ive had the chance to interview Victor Wooten, Verdine White, Nathan East, and Marcus Miller --- ALL of these guys were just like OB appears to be in this video; cool, humble, down to earth and REALLY into the music and into their instruments. Also, musically they're all stretching and pushing themselves to be better.
    I guess bassists are just cool people! :-)

    I love that he seeks out a way to slow things down in performance, focus on enjoying the song, the music. Just catching him fornthe first time and he's super cool!

    Has anyone ever tuned a 6 string bass to E A D G B E? I'm so curious and i really want to know. I think it would be pretty cool seeing stuff being played on bass that should played on guitar. Like chords and such. People might think it'll just sound like a bassy mess, but if you get the amp settings right, i think it'll sound pretty cool. Like a guitar but an octave lower.

    • @TheBestBoyyeeehehe
      @TheBestBoyyeeehehe 8 лет назад

      +TheCryptCrusader I've done it, it's fun to mess around with but it's not really something you'd perform or record with.

    • @Zombbg4
      @Zombbg4 8 лет назад

      +The Best Boy Why cant you perform or record with an alternate tuning?

    • @TheBestBoyyeeehehe
      @TheBestBoyyeeehehe 8 лет назад

      I didn't say that, I just don't think that particular tuning works very well for actually creating music with. But if you think you can do something with it, go ahead, I would love to hear it.

      John Lennon tuned a guitar down one octave lower, with heavier gauge strings of course, for one of the songs when he was still part of the Beatles.

      Fender did in in 1961 with the Fender Bass VI. Many more examples since then.

    i fingerpick and i had the same experience he had. It's like it is on autopilot, i don't think about my right hand. Any note you hit in the chord is gonna sound ok, so just let go and get loose

  • @rgurdal
    @rgurdal 11 лет назад +2

    What!? He says he should never have played in public? (34:30). Oteil is FAR too modest. He is one of the world's best bassists, and yet he still feels like he's not good enough. I guess that's how you become one of the best.
