My Goodness I am brought to tears by so many of Michelle's performances ! No other figureskater has ever touched me with so much beauty and grace on the ice !! No competition here------Michelle Kwan was and still is the gold standard for emotional physical perfection in expression of this sport.
I never noticed how thin she was here. She was always in great shape but WOW she was tiny at this competition. She was so magical. I wish she'd given this skate at the Olympics.
Michelle didn't want to leave Frank. Danny knew that if Michelle were to win the Olympics, Frank would get a 10% commission from her post Games earnings. Disobeying the father is a big no-no in a traditional Chinese nuclear family.
When I first watched this program on TV six years ago, I jumped up off the sofa and was jumping up and down clapping and crying. I still cry when I watch this program or any of Michelle's programs. She is the best!
I'm in agreement with Anne here. Its hard enough to be a technical skater. In Michelle's case, its even harder because she is a blend of athleticism and artistry. That's why we hold her in such high regard.
I totally agree Troy. Another thing about Michelle was she she was always classy. She took the criticisms and stayed above it. One reason she is so loved is because of that beautiful heart of hers.
What a performance ! Unfortunately, Michelle fell at the 2002 Olympics. If she skated the same performance like here, she would be the winner. Some people deserved the Olympics gold but never got it with bad lucky, like Michelle.
. cont'd from above... Any that is the answer for many many of the young successful female skaters today. Michelle set a standard of excellence and work ethic and good sports demeanor that inspired kids who watched her all those years. That will never change.
She's spectacular. The last 30 seconds of this routine was just amazing! It really gives you the goosebumps, especially after the lutz. If only she skated like this in Salt Lake....
From 1995 to 2006 Michelle Kwan was a force to be reckoned with from National to World to Olympic events. She won more medals (gold mainly, a few silvers and bronze). No other skater in history (except Sonia Henie) has been so dominant for so long esp at such a high level. When Kim Yu-Na was asked to name her favorite skater she answered without pause: "Michelle Kwan".
It's so amazing but I don't know whether to just appreciate it or cry that this wasn't her Olympic performance. If it wasn, it would have been her on the gold podium, not Sarah Hughes. Ugh! That triple flip! And it was so good here!! But no matter what, Michelle will always be amazing.
Kerrigan also failed to win Gold. Mao failed to win Gold. So does winning a gold medal amount to anything? Not really. It takes effort and persistent for one to obtain her goal. One who wins multiple world champions and national champions and other championships still makes that skater a champion in her own right.
Yu Na Kim used the red dress and this choice of music during her version of "Sheherazade". Why? She was simply inspired by, guess who? Michelle Kwan, of course! I think she did that even before she did 'Please Don't Stop the Music' which was first done by Sasha.
@TeamKween2010 U r exactly right! It used to be that the Olympic Gold medals were a bigger deal because that is what earned them popularity, endorsements, respect, etc. Michelle got all that and then some without it. Like John Candy's character said in "Cool Runnings" ..."if you arent good enough without the gold medal, you will never be enough with it" (paraphrasing). Well, she is one who prospered without it, and remains one of the most beloved skaters of all times!!!
@HowsaBowsaYowsa Your favoritism of Sasha over Michelle Kwan doesn't have a place in this forum. I thought what Michelle Kwan did was stellar when she used Rimsky Korsakov's challenging piece and turned her program into a sensation with comparable difficulties. Yu Na Kim used the same music for her performance too and her red costume almost look a bit like Michelle's when seen from a distance. Her musical interpretation of Scheherazade is just superb.
@mlc2005 way too many to count, lyrica angelica, tosca, the feeling begins, aranjuenz, scheherezade, rachmanioff, oh lets not forget salome at 96 worlds oh man.
Every time I see Michelle do a clean triple flip I wonder why she could not do it at the most important time at the 2002 Olympic Games....If only she could have landed that cleanly she would have won that gold medal and gone down as the greatest skaters in history....So sad
wasn't sasha also handed the 2006 national by default? and wasn't the olympics and worlds in 2006 basically hers for the taking on a silver platter and she still couldn't get it?
@allenglandlawns moot point since she skated better than sasha (who never failed to choke at every performance) and sarah who didn't skate as well. besides, they didn't just hand her the gold at either olympics she competed in so i don't know what your point is really.
Admittedly, not one of my favorite MK programs (see Red Violin and Black Swan...) I remember I was just happy that she skated cleanly after having such a hard year in the prior Grand Prix events, splitting up with Frank Carroll, and going with a different choreographer (Sarah Kuwahara) in an Olympic year. She really proved herself at this Nationals. She just didn't seem to have the same power and verve with this program that she had in the previous two seasons.
Don't bother to respond to the troll, allengland/getreal. She thrives on the responses. Apparently, she gets off on them. Give her the thumbs down instead and her posts will disappear.
Beat by a younger whippersnapper - who had a good night . Michelle Kwan At least 5 worlds and nationals - Her joy of the art , expression uncompared. I believe Tenley Albright from Boston held 5 world titles. Thats a tremendous testament to their hard work and athleticism.
i wonder why she only does 6 triple jumps. in her earlier career when she doubled her second triple toe in her triple triple combo, she would throw in a 2nd triple toe at the end. i liked it when she 7 triples in her free(more technicality). overall still nice
Michelle knew she could win with six triples if landed cleanly. Had she landed her triple-triple, then in would have been a 7-triple program. But, she couldn't sacrifice the two consecutive split jumps for a second toe loop at the end because those left such a powerful impression. At the Olympics, she had to throw in a triple toe loop and replace the split jumps because she needed to land at least 5 clean triples.
Michelle Kwan used to be one of my favorite skaters... but now when i compare Michelle and Yuna side by side, I think Yuna has so much more grace, speed and much stronger jumps.
@@katherinetan4587 Michelle had the whole package more than Yuna. Michelle's artistry is the most difficult technique, she also got the most 6.0 ( 57 times ) in the history.

This was ridiculous....perfect 6s.....ridiculous...ridiculous.....'forget saving room'...for Kwan....Sarah deserved MUCH higher scores in her SLC long program but THERE they saved room!!
Have you watched figure skating recently? The setups are even longer. Not to mention that most of the technique is inherently flawed and at least half the ladies' field doesn't have a consistent triple lutz. Let's not even talk about today's "artistry." You know it's bad when Diva Wagner is the grad dame of the field (even though I love Ashley). Mao and Yuna were the best we could hope for under CoP and even they weren't really on Kwan's level artistically.
thesupremediva I didn't say that the skaters of today have better artistry than Kwan did. Far from it. CoP has ruined things. But long before that, eliminating school figures in 1991 was the first step in creating fewer and less artistic skaters. We can now see the fruits of those two things in this generation of skaters - very very few have outstanding artistry.
LOL! Skating commentators on TV - who are much more qualified to opine than you - have gone on for about how much more impressive and skillful it is to do jumps "from out of nowhere". Check your pride and get your nose out of the air.
And she boos her marks here? She has five world championships, nine U.S. titles, and has even appeared on The Simpsons. But those numbers are like gaudy passing-yardage totals: completely meaningless without the big prize. For all her successes, Kwan has failed to win gold in the only figure-skating event the world even pretends to care about. It got worse at the Olympics .... pressure.
I am convinced that she will be viewed as the BEST female skater of all time. How many trademark performances has she given us?
Danny Kwan ruined Michelle's gold medal chance. I'm positive going "coachless" was not Michelle's idea.
