- On this adventure, Regena and I head to Arizona in search of an old abandoned airport and then to Colorado for a multi-day adventure where we will be exploring some amazing trails, checking out some historical sites, climbing high in to the Colorado backcountry mountains, camping and spending a few days at Overland Expo. We traveled in our Jeep Wrangler towing the Patriot Campers trailer and Regena was struggling learning how to back up the trailer, so we spent a little time allowing her to practice…

Trailer backing tip;
Put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel, then whichever way you turn the wheel from the bottom is where the trailer is gonna go.
Yep, she tried that several times. Slowly but surly starting to get the hang of it now.
That “hand at bottom NOT top” makes all the difference for me. Hope it helps others too.
What helped me learn was thinking about it like I was pushing a wheelbarrow, but with the trailer hitch
Especially if you turn as much as you can in the seat, look out the back window and steer with your left hand on the underside of the bottom of the wheel with palm up…
that works, also if you see more of the trailer in whichever mirror turn wheel to that mirror to straighten the trailer.
Your timing was good for camping up in the Chicken creek area. We’ve been rain every afternoon. One of the better monsoon seasons this year. Thanks for sharing.
I like these couple trips videos. It’s nice to see you both having fun. Inspiring me to do more road trips with my gf
Thank you! Adventures are always more fun when you have someone special to share them with. 😊
I think Regina really adds to your content and I love seeing the historic sites that you find for us!
So the trick that worked for my wife when I was teaching her to back the trailer, super simple but it clicked… hand at the bottom of the wheel, move your hand left and the trailer will go left. Move your hand right and trailer will go right. Hope it helps!
Awesome cool epik trail
What is that stove top biscuit maker?
How long can you afford to stay in California?
I’m a truck driver with over 20 years experience, and used to train new drivers. If you’re trying to keep the trailer straight behind you use the side mirrors only and turn towards the trailer. Meaning if the trailer is going towards your passenger mirror side, turn towards it (passenger would be 3 o’clock). You have to be fast with a shorter trailer. Also, keep you hand at 12 o’clock and only make quarter turns, meaning from 12 to 3 or 9, then back to 12.
Can I hire you for a couple days to come out and help Regena?! LOL! Thanks for the advice!
Brad telling her to break when she should be chasing. Poor Regena never had a chance 😂
On a short trailer like that if you turn the steering wheel more than a 45 degree angle from the straightforward position, you will be chasing the trailer more.
A confidence builder is to open the rear window and have her look over her shoulder and "follow" the trailer in a big open area. Small steering wheel movements only, aiming for minimal change. Then as above progress to mirrors.
I agree mirror only, trust the process
Love the interaction between you two. I can easily back up a 32 foot trailer but the short ones are so much harder! Regena, it's hard but all of a sudden it will click in and you'll be able to do it.
Thank you! And I certainly hope it clicks eventually! 😂
@@regenakowitz Reginald!
When backing up steer towards the problem. If the trailer goes left and you don't want it to go left, turn the wheel left. If it's going right and you don't want it to go right, steer right. Don't over correct. 1/4 turns on the wheel should be a good start for such a short trailer.
Love these trip videos. I watch every episode with my son with morning coffee. Hoping to take my new Gladiator on our own adventures before long. Thanks for the constant inspiration!
Brad I am going to say since Regina has been joining you I am loving the content even more. Seeing your wife join you and be so involved makes me smile. A good old friend thought me how back trailer. While learning he had me turn in the seat and watch the trailer not the steering wheel. Learn the hand motion of what to do while watching the trailer and not the wheel. That will help you unlearn left and right when once he hand motion is learned use the mirror while keeping the hand motion. But Regina you were still doing great!! Moving backwards and turning backwards is hard to grasp.
Thank you! I am so thankful she enjoys this now as much as I do... making memories together is what it's all about!
Thank you so much for the kind words and advice! As I was watching this video before it was posted, I told Brad that watching what the trailer was doing as I was trying to back up was actually helpful. I'll keep practicing and I'm sure one day I'll get it!
@@regenakowitz I miss spelled your name, sorry about that. You got this. Took me a week on a farm and having to back everyday hauling hay to get it down. Also don’t be embarrassed that you can’t the fact that you’re willing to learn in your learning and not afraid to have it on video is inspirational.
@@minitrucker007 No worries! I'm used to it...I blame my parents for giving my name an uncommon spelling. 😆 I will be the first to admit that I don't know everything...like backing up a trailer. We've all got to start somewhere and I much prefer showing folks that reality because if I can figure it out (eventually), anyone can!
The best way to back up the trailer is just bring the power wagon
Trick I learned to backup: grab the steering wheel at the bottom. Now move your hand left to turn the trailer left and right if you want the trailer to turn right. And go slow.
Great production and always entertaining 👍🏽
Much appreciated!
lovely jeeps really Really great video as usual 👍😍 you are doing well and these videos are really helpful… you are doing great job and your effeorts are admirable. waiting for next video…
Old abandoned airport hangar should've hid a forgotten extraterrestrial spacecraft. Regena demonstrated extreme patience backing up a trailer. Backed up a U-Haul trailer once in my 68 years when I moved from San Diego to Dallas. Backing then turning up the driveway to unload haunts me to this day.
The old airport was so cool! 🛸And backing up that trailer was definitely an experience. One of these days, I'll get it! 😂
Use the way big 18 wheelers use to back up . Instead of putting your hands on the top of the steering wheel place them on the bottom of the steering wheel. By doing that when you turn the steering wheel you will be turning your steering wheel in the same direction as your trailer when backing up. Try it and you'll find it makes backing up a trailer Sooo easy.
Steer toward trouble, that's how you back a trailer... An experienceed driver told me that and it changed everything for me.
Tip for backing up a trailer....................... turn the BOTTOM of the steering wheel in the direction you want the trailer to go.
Go slow and turn toward your problem. Keep it simple.
None of the hand here, turn opposite so confusing brain freeze stuff.
When I was teaching my wife and my two boys how to back up a short trailer I told them, if you ever learn how to back one of them up you can back anything up
We love how much fun you both seem to be having now. Really enjoying the new dynamic.
Best trick for backing a trailer….put your hand at 6 o’clock on the steering wheel and move your hand in the direction you want the trailer to go.
Something that works against you, the trailer is shorter than the trailer. They don’t tow 20’ trailers with 53’ trucks.
Love seeing you two in the videos. It’s so good to see family doing adventures together.
Also have her put her hands in the bottom of the steering wheel and that way she just simply points the wheel in the direction she wants it to go. Helped me when I first started learning to back up trailers.
Thank you so much! I did try the hands on the bottom thing...and it's definitely a work in progress! 😂
@@regenakowitz I got Faith in You Lady,You'll definitely Learn!👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🤗🤗
Great video as always there is definitely a learning curve backing a trailer up. Do you have problems with your CarPlay disconnecting intermittently
Regina you just need to know about backing up is small movements with the steering wheel and to turn towards your problem
@ 11:10 a vast majority of everybody could not back up your rig .... The horses were the greatest
My wife got the hang of backing a trailer on a ride on mower and a garden trailer, she didn't know it at the time it was one of the hardest set to learn on be a short trailer the only good point about it was she could see very thing easy. And she gives it to her dad because he cant back😆
Backing up, hand at the bottom of the wheel, turn the wheel the direction you want the trailer to go. Slow, slow, slower
Best trick i learnd for backing up a trailer : Hold the steeringwheel on 6 a clock, when you turn the trailer go the same direction as the hand/steeringwheel.
With trailers best advice I got when I was younger
Slow and small movements is the key
Best advice for backing a trailer, SMALL InCREMENTS! LOL Glad we are not the only ones!
I don't know if any of my advice was helping! LOL!
@@TrailRecon Thats what I was going to say, After water skiing and boating for 20 plus years, My wife was better at driving the boat onto the trailer than backing up the trailer, So lesson learned, "Have someone else teach your wife and kids"! LOL
Hello, I hope that this can help on going in reverse with a trailer. Start with one hand at six o'clock on the steering wheel, the direction that you rotate the steering wheel the trailer will go in that direction
Easy method is hand on the bottom of the wheel so when she goes to send the trailer in the direction she wants the wheel will go that direction. Hand on top is a bit of issue for those beginning to try trailers.
My father and mother taught me how to back trailers starting when I was 14, and if they were around when I was a teenager, they would never stop commenting on my technique. The biggest thing they always said, "make small corrections." Especially with a short tongue to axle trailer, you need to make very small movements in the wheel. The moment you start trying to make big changes you get to a point that the trailer is into an unrecoverable "jack-knife" that you can only fix by pulling far forward.
Small corrections!
When backing up, look in your mirror turn toward the side you se the most trailer in.
That was do kool to see those wild horses and the slice of history along with the beautiful scenery along the way
have her put 1 hand on the bottom of the steering wheel not the top it will reduce the oversteer while backing up
392 huh? The trailer must be loaded down with fuel! 😏
Just curious,do you Carry a firearm on board for security in the outback?
Love seeing Regina getting involved so much. The one big difference between her technique in backing up and yours is that she is relying on her mirrors to watch the trailer as opposed to looking backward over her shoulders. I think looking directly back gives a better perspective and is more intuitive. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! 😊
If no one has said it, Regena put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. If you want the trailer to turn left, then move your hand to the left. If Right... then move your hand to the right. With a short wheelbase trailer, slight moves are all it takes. THANK YOU BRAD!!!! You showed me your Blackstone and answered a question I had about what size you had. Regena, I'm going to have to try grilled fresh green beans. That looked yummy. Until next time... Travel Safe.
The green beans and bacon is super easy! Start the bacon first, add the green beans, then season with whatever tickles your fancy! I usually do garlic salt, a little garlic powder, and coarsely ground pepper. 😊
Hey Brad. I saw a video where it was mentioned that when backing up a trailer it is easier if you grab the steering wheel on the bottom and just turn in the direction you want to go. It’s supposed to be better than grabbing the top of the steering wheel. Hope that helps Regina.
I was a Teamster truck driver and that is the way I was taught
Used to be a truck driver and trainer for new hires. Advice to follow. Open area, get vehicle and trailer in straight line to start. Hardest part is stop natural turning instinct. Put hand on bottom of steering wheel. 6 o'clock position. That way if you want trailer to go left just swing steering wheel left. Always make small corrections. Most important part is hand at BOTTOM of steering wheel so your mind doesn't mess with natural feeling
good luck Regina. You'll get it
Thanks! I tried the hands at the bottom thing...it's a work in progress! 😂
As a driver trainer let me suggest: 1. Center steering wheel. 2. Place small piece of tape around top of steering wheel. 3. Reverse very slow at start. 4. With hand on tape, never turn wheel more than 1/4 turn. 5. Practice. Practice. Practice.
I will definitely be practicing. I LOT! 😂
I Can't Wait for Them to Come Out with Smell Vision, when she started cookin that I could have Sworn that I Could Smell It!🤔🤣🤣🤣
Maybe one day! 👃
I love my blackstone grills. I have a 17 inch for camping and a 22 inch dual burner I use at the house. My wife only likes her steak on the blackstone now. A quick tip for clean up is to get a silicone handled chain mail scrubber. Works great with water to clean up and remember to treat the surface after each use with olive oil.
Thanks for the tip! I'll have to find one of those scrubbers. Now...I could only keep the bugs from dying on it while I'm cleaning it! 😂
I realize that in the navy you only learn how to backup ships, I learn how to backup a trailer in the army on a 5-ton cargo truck pulling a M332 ammo trailer. Place your hands at the bottom of the steering wheel, move your hands in the direction you want the trailer to go.
I tried that and the trailer still disobeyed me! I think it might be personal! 😂
I’m 23 years old I’ve been with my wife for about 6 years and I hope once we get older our relationship is like your guys man that’s a beautiful thing blessing from us to you great video 👍 by the way😉

Wait did you have your bride back the trailer up to take away from your navigational error? 🤣🤣. Always love the content!! Safe travels
Yep! 😂
If,Regina learns to back that trailer up,maybe, she can teach my 81 year old mother! Lol,😂😂😂👍👍👍
😂😂😂
Put your hand at bottom of steering wheel to steer with trailers.
Awesome video Brad Keep it going Regina you got this lol great seeing Regina come on these adventures with you 👍
Thank you and I'm so thankful we are now enjoying this adventures together!
I agree about the Blackstone. We have a 17” one as well. They can be a little bulky. I see they changed the grease trap to the rear. That should be a design improvement. You guys have probably already figured this out. To be a better teacher, tell Regina to put her hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and then turn/move her hand in the direction she wants the trailer to go.
The good thing is, we have plenty of room in the Patriot Campers trailer for the Blackstone. Thanks for the tip! 😊
Regena - I’ve been using 4oz mason jars for my spices and they are perfect. I bet they would fit perfectly in that case.
That’s a great idea! If the new ones I just ordered don’t work out, I may try that.
Brad, you are so lucky....Regina is just a gem. So glad to see both of you together in more and more of your videos. You two are one of my favorite RUclips couples. Every video is so enjoyable. I hope one day our paths will cross on the trail. Until then, safe travels and enjoy your exploring!!
Awwwww…thank you! 😊
It’s fantastic Brad to see you and Regina out and about sharing the adventure so much more.
Thank you so much!
I enjoy seeing this married couple hit the trail. Great content y’all!
Thank you! ☺️
I had the pleaseure of meeting Brad & Regina at Overland Expo West recently. Turned out that we were staying in the same hotel and as I exited the elevator, there they were! They are just as nice in person as they are in their videos!
Thank you so much! I believe that was the day before the Expo started, as we were checking in. So, I apologize if we didn't smell very fresh since we'd just gotten off the trail and desperately needed showers! 🤣
@@regenakowitz lol, it was actually Saturday evening so no hygiene issues!
You guys, the way you two still look at each other like you’re love struck kids is very heart warming to my old cold soul. You may not realize it, but your love for each other is just as wonderful to observe as the four wheeling. Love you guys.
Awwww…thank you! ☺️
Awwww…thank you! ☺️
In her defense backing up a patriot in a jeep is no easy feat. I was a truck driver and have been backing up trailers for years and I can struggle sometimes with my patriot.
Thank you! Glad to know I'm not alone in my struggle! 😂
Great video! In her defense, those tiny trailers are a pain to back up especially for someone learning. Get her in a full size truck with a 20ft trailer and she'll likely get the hang of it much sooner.
Thank you! I'm not sure we'll be able to find a bigger trailer for practice, but I'm sure I'll figure this out eventually! 😄
@@regenakowitz also holding onto the bottom of the wheel helps because you simply stear the way you need to go. It takes awhile I learned in a CJ-5 with a short military style trailer.
@@thomashorner7474 Thanks! I just need to get my brains to talk to my hands (or vice versa) when I'm doing this. 😆
yes this!! long trailers are easiest to learn with. my little m416 jeep tent trailer still gets me some times haha.
I’m thinking Marco has some competition!
Also, I like your adventures thank you
Thanks so much Regina and Brad for this awesome video.
Regina is so funny and the videos with her are better.
I love your Jeep Brad, looks amazing and the sound...what a sound!!
Thanks so much for sharing with us.
Thank you so much for the kind words! 😁
Don't worry Regena, I have problems backing up a short trailer too. 🙃
It’s good to know I’m not alone in my struggles! 😁
Awesome!
Hey Brad and Regena, thank you so much for sharing this great trip with us. I really love how Regena and you are getting to adventure so much together. I know this could be a personal question, but with the hectic lives you two used to have (work, etc...) can you share how 4-wheeling and Overlanding together has impacted your relationship. I know so many of us struggle to make life work while on the road and you two are a great example for us all. Thank you two again for sharing your lives/adventures with us (btw, Chava says hi.)...
Thank you! We talked about it a while back, but I think it's a topic we can take a deeper dive into in the future.
As a grow man I can do alot of things but ive always had problems backing up a trailer
Glad it's not just me! 🤗
Your videos just keep getting better and better. My travel trailer, 73 boler, is 13 ft long so I know all about the challenge of backing up something short. Looking forward to seeing your next adventure

Sporting the Blackstone griddle...nice! Only stove we use
This was my first trip with it but I'm loving it so far!

Wow you have a smart wife Brad! I’ve been cooking on the Blackstone griddle for years it’s awesome. I have the 36 inch and the 17 inch like you have for camping cook anything on it. My favorite thing to make on it is steaks, so tender and juicy ! let me know how you like it… 🥩
Sorry if someone already recommended this (didn’t read all 120~ comments) but my Aunt taught my wife to back a trailer. The key for her was putting 1 hand at the bottom of the wheel, then your hand just goes the same direction you want the trailer to move. This takes out the need to think about it, just focus on the trailer. This is how I back up trailers now and it is so much easier. Hope it helps!
I drive in flip flops too Cool video
9:55 Those wild horses look better than private cared-for-by-humans horses. Except for them hooves. But their conditioning is great.
They were beautiful! We can't say for sure, but I believe they were free range horses. A couple of them had brands on them.
They were gorgeous! And so sweet! 😊
Brad I dont knowvhow you do it but you always find the most perfect and scenic camp spots. With Regina doing the cooking she make me hungry. I going to have to try both of those recipes at home. Btw did you ever get her the electric oven...lol

Thank you for watching! 😊
I worked a job in North Dakota, they had mustangs on the Reservation we were crossing with a pipeline. You could set your watch by them. They always seemed to show up on or near the same time everyday. I really enjoyed them and they were the first I had seen in the wild.
congrats on 500k+ subs. easier way to teach backing up trailers ( grab the bottom of the steering from the inside , move to right to back up right and move it left to back up left) top of steering will over correct if not used to it
Two different tips about back up. Tip A - Friend gave me this one is to use a toy semi truck and use that a mental note on what the Tractor is doing with the trailer when the tractor is turned side to side. Tip B - Small movements on the steering wheel. The trailer goes wild side to side when the steering wheel is turned too much. Small movements of the steering wheel keeps the trailer under control much better while back up.
Backing a trailer is easy, if you learn that once the trailer starts turning the way you want, you need to straighten your steering wheel. Don't keep turning your steering wheel. (You will end up going into a circle.)
Random question why don’t you guys get a dog as a companion
Because we already have a dog. His name is Rocket and he's a Springer Spaniel...he's made an appearance in a few earlier videos but he's old now. He has arthritis, cataracts that are impairing his vision, and his hearing is mostly gone. We don't want to cause him pain with the bumps we encounter off-roading and we are worried that with his poor sight and lack of hearing he could get himself into trouble in the backcountry. So, he stays home with our cat and one of our boys when we're on the trail. He's in this video we made in March, ruclips.net/video/xNgTWK-xvvA/видео.html, and you can see him in the beginning and throughout. We brought him on this trip since it was an easy trail and we had two of our boys to help keep an eye on him. 😊
One simple way to reverse with a trailer, hold your hands at the bottom of the steeringwheel, if you want your trailer to go right, move the steeringwheel right, if you want it to go left, move left, still holding it on the bottom, small movements early instead of big late and off course, go slow.
What camp chair does Regina have? Love your videos, keep up the great work! Thanks
It's a Stargaze chair by Nemo. Not cheap but worth every penny...I've had it for 2 1/2 years and going strong!
@@regenakowitz Thanks!
Brad - love all the videos. My wife and children aspire to this lifestyle. We base a lot of decisions on your advice.
However, could you maybe do a video on some of the simpler behind the scenes stuff? We can watch tons of videos on sponsored equipment etc.
But nobody seems to mention the simple stuff, like how do you mount your patches. We’ve been buying patches for every national forest or location we’ve been to. But never hook and loop backed. I see your awesome collection and get jealous.
BTW. Love that your wife is now on the trails with you and we love the recipes.
I picked up a clutch tip a long time ago for backing up a trailer that made it a lot easier. If you put both hands on the bottom of the steering wheel, palms up and thumbs pointed out, the trailer will move in the direction of your thumbs.
That's what I've heard...it didn't quite work out that way when I was trying to back up! 😆
@@regenakowitz Haha I hear you. Even with some decent tips, it still takes some practice to get the hang of it. And the short trailer is probably harder!
@@nickmcdvtt LOTS of practice!
