    Sound-wise, they are close but when all is considered the Montage seems better value for money.

    Most of the High End Synths/workstations/Arrangers can be tweaked to death - and honestly, in the right hands they all sound fantastic. Just pick one, and I'm pretty sure you mind will be blown. There''s enough Juice in these behemoths to keep you busy tweaking for years. I chosed the Yamaha Montage, and it takes me weeks just to get into complex sounds, but I absolutely ADORE the keybed as it feels so premium to me, and I play this one a LOT easier then the others I've tried, all personal preference - just pick one, and you'll be entertained for years.

    Montage is in an entierly different league with its versatility and power, it can compete with what the nord does best and completely surpass the stage where it falls short.

      Exactly why I sold my Electro 6D and buying a MODX soon. I'm a keyboardist. Not solely a pianist. The nords limited or lack of layering and split features is to big of a sacrifice. I play with 4 piece or bigger bands. So once everybody gets cranked up....sound quality of nord piano vs yamaha piano gets washed out in the mix

Hay ritmos y canciones que al gusto del oído de cada persona suena bien en el Montage y para otros suena bien en el Nord. La “Música”, idioma universal que une a toda cultura y persona. They both sounded excellent, and I really couldn't choose on sound, especially as there are also other similar patches on each (especially the Montage). The Nord is probably set up better for organ, with its dedicated drawbars. But the true FM piano on the Montage is better to play than the sampled one on the Nord. One thing to keep in mind is that for most sounds, except piano and organ, the Nord only has 32 voice polyphony, which is rather stingy, and could lead to note stealing.
    In the end, the main advantage of the Nord is the immediacy of the panel layout with all of the knobs and buttons right there. If this is not a big deal for you, and the touchscreen works fine, then the Montage (or MODX) is a better value and more powerful. Also, If you're using it mostly as a piano, than the 88 key action on the Yamaha is much better and more realistic than the too-light Fatar action on the 88-key Nord.

      @@elmehdioubouhouch The Montage (and MODX) are sold in three models: 61 key with an organ action, 76 key with an organ action and 88 key with a weighted piano action. So, as long as you get a Montage 8 or MODX8 with the 88 key keyboard, it will have a weighted hammer action which is fine for piano. The Montage action is slightly better than the MODX action, but I'm not sure if it's worth the very substantial price difference.

    I think that the Pianos sound better on the nords. Much more detail and thickness if you ask me. The "other sounds," meaning synth based sounds like leads, basses, brass, horns, etc are better on the Yamaha, though. I think that both brands compliment another very well.

      What I do is to play the Electro 6D piano on my Roland Fa 08 via midi cable. Cos honestly the Nord pianos are best in class though it's still a matter of taste. You could do same if you tend to prefer the Nord for pianos but need weighted action for that.

  • @geoffk777
    @geoffk777 5 лет назад +7

    Honestly, both sound great and I can't name a winner (although the Nord Clavinet is a little odd). It comes down to other features like the portability and the immediacy of the Nord's knobs versus it's price, limited memory and poor keybed. Or the Yamaha's FM synth, nice action and versatility versus it's huge size and complex interface. I prefer the Montage (and own one), but I could see a player legitimately going for either and not being disappointed. Or you could get an MODX and get the portability of the Nord, the versatility and FM synth of the Montage and a way cheaper price than either one.

      Arriving a little late to this thread, but I can offer my experiences. I’ve been gigging with the Montage 8 for a couple years, and I love the sounds and workstation Ike capability … but it is incredibly heavy and more so with a proper hard case, so just be aware. The pianos are great on both; they are based on different grands, which may be the greatest difference between them (e.g., the CFX is not the Fazioli at all, but it is fantastic in it own right). I love the many varieties on Rhodes and Wurlie on the Montage too; it falls short on the organ, mostly because the Nord organ engine and controls are built for that use. Nord A1 synth engine versus Yamaha FM plus - depends on your preference.

  • @laronrhodesmusic
    @laronrhodesmusic 3 года назад +8

    Sound wise they are equal. The organ on the Nord is amazing. The preset organs on Montage not so much BUT you can download organs on it that sound 10x better than the Nord. Also the note polyphony on the Nord is a measly 32 which causes note stealing when playing those fat chords. The real comparison comes in when deciding what you want the board for. If you’re looking for a workstation only, Montage is definitely the go to. If you’re looking for a stage performer only, Nord is the go to. If you’re looking for both in one instrument, Montage is your go to. It excels on stage and it is a workhorse for musicians that do tracking. Also if you’re looking for something that’s easy to navigate, Nord is your go to because Montage is a tad bit complicated.

    The problem is that Nord has definitely much better sound for piano and organs - definitely far more ahead of Yamaha and other work stations, BUT if we talk about other instruments like strings, sax, guitar or whatever - the sounds at Montage sound much better (both natural and non natural). But Montage is a Wokstation, which has lots of features like modulation, ranger, various features do fully create the music from scratch to the complete melody with good sound (not the best ever, but pretty good using the standard samples which are almost up to date - compare to the Roland which has only sounds back from early 90s). Nord - is a stage instrument which is even not meant to be even a piece of workstation, which sounds absolutely insane as piano, electronic piano and electronic organs, but that’s it. The additional thing that brings Nord as the best stage instrument is that it is really easy to play fast things like a pro, I don’t know why, but it’s real. BUT Montage is for sure wider much wider and wider and wider powerful machine, Nord is just a best performance piano electronic piano and organ stage instrument. The fucking problem is that I want both of them, but budget is limited only to one

    Honestly what is with these comparisons? This is better,that is better...nothing is better in my eyes they’re all different companies, different instruments and we all have different types of ears. I have a Montage 8 and I love because I am used to Yamaha as an 20 year old kid is since 2011. It’s an easier transition and I usually use plugins with it everyone can access plugins. So guys chose what you want they’re high end I’m pretty sure these instruments will offer you what you exactly what you want because both instruments = endless possibilities it’s just they have few features over each other but as a piano player I’m pretty sure you’re never going to use these features. Just go out there and make music.

    By the 13 minutes mark I think the Nord has better sounds because they are richer and cleaner. I read about 10 or so comments and some say one can tweak the Montage to sound like the Nord does. Cost, poliphany and other matters aside. Worth noting where its made. The Montage series is made in Japan (many other Yams are made in Indonesia). The Nord's are all "hand made in sweden"

    Ahhh. THE video I’ve been searching for. Going to watch and I’ll be back with my comments. ***** Okay. I’m back! I would say that Nord better watch out. Yamaha is starting to become a leader. I would say that Nord still has better samples overall, however, the Montage and MODX8+ come very close.
    One problem is that Nord keeps coming out with new products, but they do not make them much more accessible. The 88-key Stage 4 does now have physical organ drawbars and they got rid of panels A and B and added extra sliders. Great! But they are still using tiny digital screens. Not good when you have hundreds of samples.
    Also… You did not go into the synth capabilities of the Montage, in this video, but in my opinion, the Montage and MODX8+ go well beyond Nord in this respect.
    Also, good that Yamaha uses a big central screen. Unfortunately, the print is crammed and small font. They could improve this. But still better than Nord’s tiny screens, I think.
    I also hear the weighted key action is not as good as the Nord.
    I know I’m going into more than the sound comparison here, but considering everything this is my opinion…
    Overall, considering the accessibility of features and synth capabilities, I think Yamaha wins. And as far as the sound comparison of samples, it is very close to Nord. There’s a difference. And, the difference is not just in quality, but it is also a bit in style. But that’s not really a bad thing. Good actually.
    I had a Stage 3 and returned it because it took so much work to dig into the features, and I was dissatisfied with the lack of readily-available synthesizer samples and capabilities without having to go in and edit and assign samples.
    There is a point when complexity can be a drawback even when there’s quality. That makes the Montage, and it’s simpler cousin, if you will, the MODX8+, definite considerations over the Stage 3 and probably Stage 4.
    If Yamaha makes wise choices going forward, they will listen to feedback, and the next version of Montage or MODX will be even better. But I suspect that Yamaha might have something else up their sleeve. I don’t know if we will see another version of either one. Probably something completely new. Maybe.

    Not sure I see any point to these keyboard comparisons, to be honest. Often, it isn't comparing like with like- in this case, the Nord Stage 3 is designed for live performance, whereas the Yamaha Montage is more of a workstation keyboard. What it mainly accomplishes is bringing out brand vs. brand arguments, and the worst in keyboard players in terms of this! Of course, personal preferences exist, but if you're going to spend £2000 upwards on a keyboard, and the brand is Yamaha, Nord, Roland, Korg, you're going to get a keyboard that's really worthwhile, and hopefully tailored to the main use you want to put the keyboard to.
