The wooden clappers are part of a pair of long boot stretchers. They are the middle part of the boot shaper /stretcher. The other two parts would have been wooden and shaped like the low leg and calf and the clappers would make up the inner third of the boot tree. It would have been pushed down between the inner and outer parts to fill the shape of the boot and keep it shaped according to the amount of stretching required. They would have been inserted into long leather riding boots so to keep a nice shape and the leather would last longer and not shrink and collapse without them. I have a pair and they are amazing but one does not see them any more.
Yes! I knew that's what they were. I don't even know how I knew that. I guess I just have been around so long and been in so many historical homes over the years as well as so many thrift stores and junk stores. I just love old stuff.
They are indeed part of a pair of boot trees. We have my grandfather’s cavalry boots from WWl which have the original wooden trees as well as his sword. We also have photographs of him wearing them on two different chargers, one of whom is the most badly put together horse l have ever seen but he has large ears and eyes which tends to denote a generous nature.
Michael’s love of the château is apparent in this video. The more I see of him, the more I realize what a kind, interesting, imaginative human being he is. LaLande is being brought back to life by such a wonderful ensemble of characters.
He has his own attic room now, so he can keep his stuff there. Sounds like a photo studio is on the list for Michael next, either in the attic or in the area on the other side of the open wood/log room. After Natti's and Gerry's appartments are done then they can do two more on that side.😁❤🌺🌹🥂
Those wooden wedges you found are for boots. If you look at one of the episodes of Downton Abbey where they are shining shoes, you will see similar objects around the room. Probably a top portion that interlocks with a wooden foot. That way it could be interchangeable with different sized feet.
Well here I was thinking I needed a bigger house to help with clutter, but clearly it's not the size of the house that matters. Well done clearing out.
Old, cold, and physically decomposing here in Michigan, but watching the three of you attack the attic made me feel young again, and I was right there with you. You managed to make a nasty task feel like a party. Thanks for the escape!
These iron foot warmers were used in churches, to keep your feet warm on cold stone floors during long sermons. In German they are called Stöfchen, 'little stove' in English.
@@sandrabergquist1684 Yes, I seem to remember Stephanie saying about ten years. Sad things didn’t work out for them but it appears they are still close, which is lovely to see.
Why do you not start a trade and barter page for Chateaus where left over materials can be traded straight across for other items or barter for project help. Would really maintain Chateau pieces in Chateaus rather than going to the Scrap yard or ending up in a Brocante where they profit on items. Seeing the pile the wood alone can be planed down and reused. It costs a lot to buy oak. eg: Michael needs Oak for new Stairs, trade the Oak wood he needs for W.H.Y, etc.
The ivory handle "whip" is actually a carriage crop. Probably for an open or summer carriage where the driver sits on a front bench seat since it's not quite long enough for an elevated driver's seat. Any equine implement with the flat leater loop is a crop, no loop = some form of whip.
Could Michael put small battery powered candles in his foot warmer and make it into a night light? They usually operate on timers so they’d come on the same time every night.

Agree, on the inside of some of the cupboard doors they'd be functional. I'd also suggest buying battery powered closet door led lamps that turn on when you open a cupboard or by pressing. I have a HUGE antique chest of drawers that swallow an immense amount of storage and bought the press lights on offer at Lidl and boy whay a game changer! I love finding treasure among the junk! It also seems to unclutter your brain to get things like that sorted! Michael was so himself. He has that same child in him that you and Philip have! After so much time apart and working so hard you guys, I hope you thoroughly enjoy your time away and get some rest to restore your mind, body & soul. Loved the video and always wonderful when Michael Potts is there. 💕

Michael Potts is a scream Hes Zimbabwean like me and a very particular breed. They broke the mold.. Always love how he manages chaos in such a calm way with such wit. Keep up the good work
Ohhh what fun!!! I would so come and volunteer just to see all the junky little treasures! However I am with Michael and I probably would not throw away those mirrors!
So bizarre seeing an attic floor that appears to be dirt! I've been fascinated following several chateau channels and seeing all the rocks, cement, dirt used for floors from top to bottom. The weight must be enormous! Congrats on tackling a daunting job. It is going to be so useful to know what you have and be able to find things.
Love the window found in the attic, hope it can be used somewhere in the chateau. Well done Phillip in finding the doors to the cupboard. Well done all of you in sorting out the attic!
As someone who loves to sort, perge, organize and arrange...watching the attic clearing gave me so much satisfaction. I would have loved to join you. Well done! The attic is well on its way to being a more useable area. Stephanie, I must agree with Michael and Philip about the old television though 😲
after a hard days work I’m always excited to go home and watch chateau diaries ❤️ thank you for always easing the stress Stephanie and the rest of lalanders ❤️❤️❤️
I didn't know that I am addicted to your channel until you've been missing for several weeks! It's sad not to see new videos for a while. But I know you all need some kind of a break from us & camera 😃 well deserve vacation! Enjoy your vacation!
Keep the mirror squares, push the dresser top/cupboard against the wall in the attic billiard room, place the mirrors on the inside back of it and add shelves, you will have a cool bar back to store liquor and glasses.
In my family we would use those for displaying quilts that had been made by the women of earlier generations, but really they are also handy when you’re working with fibers and need various kinds close at hand - so if you’re doing embroidery this could be helpful to keep your colors handy and untangled.
Love love love seeing you doing anything and everything! It must feel so satisfying to making great inroads to the sorting and chucking! It’s so lovely having Michael in the entire episode. And he’s a great cook! Hope you and Philip are having a fabulous time in Durban. 🇿🇦🥂Please give loads of love to Isabelle and Percy. Thanks for entertaining us whilst you’re away. It’s so appreciated! Love to you all. X ❤️
That was fun to watch! If I were there I feel like I’d be itching to get a shop vac set up in the attic and vacuum up as much of the dust/debris as possible now that you can see the floor! It’s so much more fun cleaning when you have friends to help! Haha
SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS!!! I still have that album! This was from the late 90's when swing dance music was making a comeback. My friends and I had been doing a 40's show for college and already knew the basics of the old moves, when swing dance clubs started popping up all over Orlando, Florida. My friends and I would leave our jobs at 10 or 11 at night, then dress up and drive 45 minutes to the clubs and stay out dancing until 3am 😄 Good times, great memories, and the songs are still fun to listen to, though I don't think I could do the flips anymore 😆
I've never seen one of that size or type. I wonder if it might have been something to do with fox hunting, like a bush beater or to keep the hounds from underfoot.
You should tape all the wardrobes and cabinets in the attic shut so nobody puts things in there. That way you can keep things neat and organized so when you need something you know you don’t need to look in there.
I love all your videos but this kind is my most favourite!! Everything about the great potential in this attic space speaks to me! I would restore those old beautiful billiard legs and incorporate them into a bar for the future billiards room! They are gorgeous!!
From watching your channel, I always thought you were stunningly beautiful. Starting your video without make-up proves that you are beautiful on the inside and out. So much respect for you. Brava.
One of my favorite finds from my 1850 Craftsman mansion was a 1968 newspaper ad of Jane Fonda holding a space gun for the movie Barbarella - it was lining a drawer. I framed it. This was a lot of fun Stephanie and good job you for clearing out some space. That room is glorious!
Missed the vlogs so much I’m watching this one again🙂 Definitely consider making that room in the attic into a billiard room😍 I love that sideboard top 😍 Phillip’s eye for detail found the doors 👍 I love that food warmer too. Those items (clappers, foot warmer etc) are beautiful styling pieces!

Would also love episodes that focus on each on each of the main people there from how they discovered you and their first visit (with current commentary) with clips from throughout along with what they mean to the place now as well as what interviews on how the relationships have evolved. Thanks! It is all brilliant!
I feel the same. I just started watching the vlogs and noticed some characters are reappearing. It would be nice to get a refresher of who they are, or were and what they meant to the château. Also would like to see more episodes on the château inside, with before and after pictures.
Missed you all soooooo much and so so happy to see this new vlog! Have a ton of fun on your Vaca! Happy warm appreciative thoughts from Phoenix Arizona!!!
I am watching this nearly a year after and it is one of my favorite episodes. Wish I could be there to help make LaLande everything that you want it to be. Wouldn’t it be amazing to know where all of the beds, armoires, and wallpapers fit into the chateau. If walls could talk, yes? You are all delightful. This vlog is sheer happiness. You are the sweetest, Stephanie.
Your attic is actually something of a treasure trove... Your found an Empire bedcrown and the bed I spotted and you talked about... is Empire! Add a few nice gild bronze appliques to it et voila, a grgorgeous Empire bedroom set! The Empire chairs and a table or a trumeau you'll no doubt find in a brocante - perhaps even Troc or Emmaeus - and it will make an elegant Empire bedroom. Why not?
That was fun, so many interesting finds! I like the idea of a billiards room/historical finds. It's amazing the advancement of technology, I'm with you Stephanie on the TV it's a keeper!
It's like a treasure hunt! Great to see Michael, been following his grand prix pictures, he's an incredibly talented photographer. And chucking things out of the window is so much fun 😀
Oh I loved watching you scrounge in the attic! This is one of my favourite things to do...memories of my grandparents big attic in their grand old home, growing up! Thank you for taking us on this journey! Thank you for keeping us entertained while you're away in South Africa!
Great progress in the loft guys, looking good 🙌 The wooden this you found at the beginning of the video, I believe are part of what would be wooden boot trees, commonly used for riding boots to keep there shape
I always wanted to go in our Grandmothers attic she lived in a beautiful Victorian House ..that was the only place off limits .. which I completely understand as an adult. Grandmother had kept so many memories in her attic. Thank you for sharing with all of us.. really needed this video today🙏🏼🕊💛🦚
Such an industrious day you all put in today! It looks great in the attic! The dinner looks fabulous, and the flowers are so beautiful on the table. Another good vlog and all the guys at the chateau are so lucky to be there!
I would chuck that old tv too, no matter who its previous owner. It isn't like a painting or a print. But if you took the guts out of it, maybe there would be some usefulness
The wooden clappers are part of a pair of long boot stretchers. They are the middle part of the boot shaper /stretcher. I believe the mystery wooden paddles might be used for sock darning.
Yes it is.
It's so rewarding to make a dent in a project like that. Michael Potts has the most gentle way about him. He's a good guy.
The foot warmer went into a carriage and then into the family church pew to keep tootsies warm during the long services.
The moment when Michael Potts wants to keep something and Stephanie insists he can’t! 😲😲😲 Priceless.

Shoe trees
boot boom supplies
Yep! I was going to say they're part of vintage or antique Shoe Lasts
I thought they were for shoes!
I KNEW I had seen them before! 🤣
11:50 Michael's expression at the prospect of having to throw me those mirrored tiles is priceless I halfway expected his lips to start to trimble.

The mirror tiles could be used in that old sideboard to make a beautiful bar for your billiards room.
Should keep the mirrored rectangles in case you ever damage / accidentally crack the mirror in your bathroom!
Phillip, it's a riding crop. The rider gently touches the rear hind of the horse to tell him here we go forward Mr. Horse.

I think that is a sidesaddle cane, longer and thicker than a regular whip. Used in place of the leg when riding aside.
Would look good hung on the wall like an artwork. Especially in an old barn etc
How exciting to be blessed enough to rummage through an ancient attic. Can't wait to see what you uncover next.

That would look beautiful for Christmas as well. Good idea
Great idea! Or use it with hot coals to warm toes on bonfire nights
Actually could simply put down large tile under the warmer
I was thinking maybe a small hibachi for cooking on.
That's a really cool idea
That foot-warmer can be used for flower-arrangements! 🤩 Set a bowl with wather inside, and stick flowers from the top, down in the wather. 😊

I think that little funny thing that looked sharp should be a keeper also. Until you find out what it is such a bit should be put aside.
@@pv6450 Perhaps it could be used to watch old VHS videos on...surely there's a vid player hiding somewhere in the attic brocante 😂
I’m wondering about the weight of the table in an attic.
Great video! MUCH MORE Michael Potts please!
Great progress in the loft guys, looking good 🙌
The wooden this you found at the beginning of the video, I believe are part of what would be wooden boot trees, commonly used for riding boots to keep there shape
WOW! I bet you all slept well that night! Marvelous job all! 💖
I agree with you on the old TV Steph.
I rarely set reminders ... But THIS is not something I want to miss.
So excited for another big step 😁
Squirrel nut Zippers are a great fun band! Play them at your next dance party!
Loved this!! Especially enjoying Michael Potts being there and Stephanie’s cheerfulness always makes me feel everything is right with the world ❤️
...awww and Amaury caught facetiming Nati at the dinner table bless💕love them both I do... enjoying following their Argentinian adventures..🥰
What great finds. Love that you found some inside shutters and the cool doors to the cabinet. Blessings.
So fun going through the old attic and finding treasures!
