I was just talking to a co-worker the other day about how 30 Rock hit the perfect balance between celebrities playing themselves (Conan O'Brien, Jerry Seinfeld, Kelsey Grammer) and playing characters (David Schwimmer, Peter Dinklage, Carrie Fisher). And then there were the cameos like Oprah and Jim Carrey that blur the line.

Carrie Fisher had one of the best cameos. She was hysterical as the deluded, coked-out ex comedy show head writer.

Love that 30 Rock approached celebrities the same way as classic Simpsons. The cameos are treated as solid jokes with no butt kissing. Unlike modern Simpsons where they are propped up and have their egos pandered to.
What is this modern Simpsons of which you speak? The show ended back in 2000.

Watch him in _The Baxter,_ a small movie directed and written by Michael Showalter that was a romcom from the perspective of the guy who gets dumped in a romcom. He plays a wedding planner and his scene is one of the funniest in the whole movie.

@@Jamietheroadrunner S03E02, S05E04, S05E10, S06E19 (episodes with blackface/race-change make-up jokes) are removed from all streaming services and syndication. The only way to watch them now are on Blu-ray/DVD or piracy.

Most of them are in multiple scenes, so the appearances technically aren’t cameos, innit? Buzz Aldrin maybe?
It’s been years since I last watched 30 Rock so don’t remember who did what but most of them are definitely guest appearances.
@@Dani-Ami in my opinion a cameo is an actor who appears briefly as themselves. these are all guest spots. so yes, aldrin was a cameo, as was james defranco and a few others. paul mccartney.
