- In this episode of "What Is On My Wrist" Cam talks about a fan favorite. The IWC Mark 11 (Ref. 6B/346). Mk. XI was a watch born out of rigorous specifications and necessity. As the British Ministry of defense came to realize after the issuance of the famed “Dirty Dozen” timepieces, they came to the conclusion that these watches just weren’t accurate or durable enough for their pilots. So in 1947, the British Ministry of Defense created the 6B/346 navigation watch standard which became known as Mk. XI.
Both IWC and JLC produced watches under the 6B/346 specification. The JLC Mk. XI was discontinued in 1953 and IWC then become the sole supplier, outfitting RAF Pilot’s until the watches were decommissioned in 1981.

The Mk. XI’s were initially produced with radium dials however it’s almost impossible to find them with their original dials as they were serviced every year, and as time went on the MOD’s specifications required improvements. Such as the use of tritium, which is why the IWC Mk. XI's seen today featured the matte black “circle-t” dials that have become synonymous with British military watches and indicate the use of tritium as the luminous material.

TEN RULES FOR PURCHASING YOUR VINTAGE MARK 11

No matter how many times I look at it - to me it is just the coolest watch ever. From its perfect size over its mesmerising, iconic dial up to its fascinating history. It is just so clean, so pure, so raw, so utterly masculine and restrained. Blows my mind that IWC isn't just continuing this.
Great review Cam. I do think IWC doesn't get the full appreciation it deserves. Fantastic watch manufacturer, a great history
Thanks Christian! Agreed very cool watches with a huge amount of history!
Makes me miss my MKXV :-( great watches! Nice pick on this video!!
Ah thanks!! IWC makes some very cool watches!!
Great review, I am lucky to have a 1952 IWC Mark XI pilots watch. I bought it for £10 ($13) back in the 1980s when they were been sold off to the public as ex- MOD surplus..It was my main work watch back in the 90s as a Telephone engineer. It is still in good condition and keeps great time.
Had one for a while. While I enjoyed it, I never felt comfortable wearing it due to its age + It felt like a placeholder for the ultimate circle T watch (Milsub). Still don’t have the milsub but someday…
You should do a video series on what to wear with your watch man. Love your style
haha thanks! Appreciate the kind words!
Cam, for some reason my last comment is not showing up, perhaps because I linked to another yt video. If so, search here for look at life RAF test pilot 1962 it’s the story of the famous test pilot Jim Dell. At around 3:36 in you get a clear shot of his watch as he tests the ejector seat. It looks like a MKII but it does not seem to have numerals, did IWC make them without numerals or perhaps his was not an issued watch though I think it was as an earlier shot shows him wearing what looks like a gold watch with brown strap then when with the aircraft this one! Thanks for another great and informative video.
My grail watch! Great video and what brand is the leather jacket btw?!
Get a Hamilton mechanical......flash the cash later...get a reverso
Awesome looking watch
It really is!
Great video learned a lot 👍 I just did a short video on the Mark 18 tribute to 11 😊🍻 such a great piece also by IWC.
Super cool!! will check it out, thanks for the kind words and feedback!
@@craftandtailored You're welcome! And hey that's what it's all about. Support 😊🍻 and meeting some cool friends along the journey.
Very nice true toolwatch! They have quite a long lug to lug measurement right? This makes them wear a bit larger than 36 quite a nice looking and balanced ratio for most wrists I think. Also where is that buyers guide from IWC?

yep the lugs are quite long which I agree makes them more wearable.. see attached link just added it to show the description as well!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Can - could you be a little clearer about what your name is next time? All kidding aside, great review!
Will you ever review a watch younger than you? 😜.
P.D.: I like your videos.
hehe I did actually! I did an early review of the Tudor BB 58 which is a modern favorite of mine! ruclips.net/video/c21i6MF0Hc4/видео.html
@@craftandtailored Tudor BB 58 which pays tribute to the Rolex Submariner 1957, so still very vintage 😂😂.
Wouldn’t suggest that book, the best book in my opinion is Konrad’s
Yeah, its the only one I have been able to find! can you post a link to the book you mentioned, id be interested in checking it out!
The IWC Mark II looks way better than the JLC. Those RAF ´staches knew what was good. 🇬🇧
hehe for sure!!
