I would imagine that if you replaced Zap Blast Spinner with Mega Boomerang you would see more status effect procs as that inherits your equipped weapons properties and is muliti-hitting. Palamute's equipped with the umbrella shield and attack speed scroll are also really good for inflecting status effects and is the only reason I haven't replaced mine yet despite having several strong palicos.

I was looking for a "best skills" type palico guide, and almost didn't click, but I think you really just summed it up for me when you reiterated that speed runners don't even bother and it's not worth overthinking. I'll just pick what I like. Thanks for helping me reframe my perspective on this one.
On PC I'm still unlocking camps and stuff and am running one of each buddy... I have done double Palico before on switch and I think the biggest thing is the safety of sharpening on a dog rather than the travel speed. At higher tiers you can do other things to address sharpening, so I agree it all leans towards the palamute being an early game buddy. I still would like to see more love given do the dogs though because IRL I'm really not a cat guy and if my dog could do more in game I'd run two of em.

I recently switched to Fighter after going almost the entire game with Healer and it's been a nice change! The affinity and earplugs from Rousing Roar as well as the attack and defence from Power Drum makes it so that I've basically got a mini Hunting Horn in my party (which is nice, considering I immediately dropped the weapon after what Capcom did to it)
Though I usually play multiplayer so I never really bothered managing the second Buddy slot, usually I had it empty so that the pet could train in the Dojo instead.

@@CiromBreeze Huh? I’ve heard nothing but good things about “what Capcom did to [hunting horn]”. And from what I understand, there is a switch skill that lets you play it the old way if that’s your preference. What was your issue with it?

And worst of all, the removal of the free-flowing combos, no longer can any move follow any other move.
Ironically, the one thing the Switch Skill actually changes is the one thing that I didn't really care about. I don't mind that the songs auto-play, that's actually a really nice feature. I just wish we had that with the old Horn.

@@CiromBreeze Thanks for the reply. I was genuinely curious since this is my first MH game, and all the videos I watched on the HH raved about it. I’m sorry that they neutered it so much for you. HH was one of the first weapons I tried, and while I loved it at first for how effective it was, I eventually switched away because I found it a bit too simplistic and boring, so on that note I kind of get where you’re coming from.

      @CerberusMalt 3 года назад

It's funny because I have the complete opposite opinion, I love the songs being simplified so you don't have to spend so long overthinking which dootstick is the best one. And so you can just get your songs out and be good. The combos feel nice, do good damage (from what I feel) and is way better in Rise than any other MH Game I've played where World could only get me to sometimes play the thing if I felt like supporting. Now it supports by killing the damn monster.

As someone who probably played more prowler than anything else in GU, I went out of my way to get all the best skills on my buddies, customized their looks to the max (I had a lot of fun doing it for palamutes especially) and got them fancy armor. I even try out new combos all the time.
    What I found:
    - Bombardier is my favorite cat and Monster Mine is my favorite skill. Not only does it look awesome, but it also makes for interesting scenarios in hunts and especially rampages. It's really cool to see my palico plant a mine right where monsters pass through because then I can try to engage them and get them to trigger it.
    - Shock Tripper is great. It's given me so many opportunities to KO monsters, it's insane. One proc per hunt is basically guaranteed and that's one more KO on top of everything else, even when you KO'd the monster a bunch already.
    - Palamutes seem to be better users of status attack up than cats, because palamutes attack with you instead of truly acting on their own. Currently, I run 2 palamutes (yep, trying it out) with Volvidon weapons and they tend to get two paras per hunt. Which is pretty darn decent if you ask me (that's with me running no para whatsoever btw)
    - Speaking of, my go to weapon is either Volvidon for KO and para, or Somnacanth (sleep). Personally, I prefer para, but running, say, GS, sleep is way better. KO is just a bonus btw. I don't think my guys would ever get KOs consistently if I didn't run with blunt assist kinsects a lot of the time.
    - Endemic life barrage is indeed completely and utterly busted. Gatherers got it all. Barrage, Pilfer, potential Endemic Life Summon or Shock Tripper and they also gather more han other palicoes, so you'll get more random loot from them at the end of a quest.
Also, running Gunlance, optimizing for damage a bit might not even be that bad an idea, because the Howlitzer can run buddy rallye and buff up buddies quite a bit that way. For armor, I go purely for looks. My bombardier needs to have the Bnahabra sunglasses at all times.

Status Attack Up is generally only useful when combined with cats that have Mega Boomerang and / or Pilfer (preferably both). Those attacks pierce and can apply a lot of status. I typically get 1-2 sleeps per monster from the Palico weapons alone. Players who prefer Go Fight Win should probably opt for a different passive skill.

recently i enjoyed using a healer and a fighter together. the healer to heal obviously (i tried got one with all slots full of just healing skills), and the fighter to buff me. it's a lot of fun, because i like playing fast and aggressive, and against monsters i know well i can pretty much go the whole hunt without healing myself, because my cat does it for me. some monsters that are more difficult for me do require me to heal, but honestly even in high rank i usually don't have to use my own items, the ones i get during the quest are enough most of the time. and because the fighter buffs me i have some more attack output too, and as a dual blade user i do have a fighter with the stamina thingy (no idea how it's named in english, but the ability where the cat cheers you on and your stamina depletes slower). i'm pretty sure an assist cat would be great for that playstyle too, but i haven't tried that yet ^^'

    QUICK TIP:
If you're not getting the RNG for the perfect Palico. You can do the Rajang challenge quest and cart. Pick the HBG and avoid the Prism Spiribird then try and hit a personal best of 16 seconds. You only need to fail the quest once for the rotation of Palico to change. Also, once you fail the quest use the move around village option in the menu to get to the Palico trainer guy as there are no load screens and is much faster then running there on foot.
Hope this helps for those on Nintendo. If you're on PC download the Palico editor on Nexus mods.

Regarding pali(co's/mutes) and status, I've had good success using the sleep weapon you get from the buddy shrine. Paralyzes I've never been able to get off though, and I've definitely tried. Poison also doesn't seem to be that great to put on them either, haven't really noticed more than one poison proc in a fight happening, and I'm not even sure if that's from them most of the time, or from other happenstance like poison toads, etc. But sleep seems to be working fine for me. Plus that sleep stick is blunt as well.
Even then, I still wouldn't recommend Status Attack Up, because you will not see more than one of those procs happening in a hunt anyway. Maybe in a hyper specialized setup where both you and your cats/dogs focus on a specific status, but eh.
I do think dogs make the better status appliers as well though, the chain weapon you start out with does a lot of small hits, which is generally good for elemental/status.

If one day, you thought: "I want to have a team of beyblader palicoes." Then build your beyblader AttackL palicoes and go on hunts with them.
Then if another day, you thought: "I want to try status palamutes." Then build your attack speed, StatusAtkPlus palamutes and go on hunts with them.
Then if another day, you thought: "I want to speedrun." Then remove your two buddies and go on a hunt solo.
Bottomline is: Do what you freaking want to do.

Waiting for it to come out on PC, going to miss my palicos from GU using flash bombay to troll me. Especially on Valstrax, always adds a bit more challenge when the screen turns yellow and white and the elder dragon is no longer in my field of view. Is it behind me? Is it about to crash down from the sky? Do I have time to use invigoration or get 3 notes off and get into the valor sheathing animation? How many people put flash bombay on all their palicos cause it's going to screw with them more than the monsters and make the fight more interesting? Is there a way in Rise to make it so monsters don't attack my palico and only attack me so I will actually use my palico for combat? I came all the way out to the monsters location to give it the musical performance of its lifetime, it should be focusing on me and not my palico...

Also, the problem with random palicos and palamutes is that the game picks hideous colors for the vast majority of them. They look like someone dropped them in a toilet or a nuclear waste dump, more often than not... I would LOVE it if there were some option to pick either vivid contrasts or complimentary colors while not actually having to choose them myself - not that there's any game to my knowledge that offers a "semi-random" feature with those particular criteria. This game is about as curated random as it gets.
Most of them totally end up looking like garbage though. What I do, is I leave everything "random" EXCEPT I choose a few colors myself in "scout" - and then I do it again after the next mission or whenever one comes along that I want. (It's a little tedious, but it's still far faster than actually designing each one myself) but most of the settings are still random, and I don't have to have a supposed animal that has more in common with poop following me around all over the place.
Then again, you can just recruit them as slow as you want, and wait 10 quests to stumble into one that looks good. I use two Palicos because even if I liked dogs (I don't), palamutes just don't... do much. I use a gathering palico and an assist palico because they just have the biggest visible effect on the hunt, and I honestly don't even care about the pilfers from the gathering palico, given that every palico can plunder (if the gathering one does it more, the difference is not very large); endemic life barrage is just godlike.

I want my palicos to have "pure" skillsets so I want my healer to only have healing skills, my offensive ones to only have attacks and my support to only have buffs and traps. For passive skills, medic is a must for healer but aside from that it mainly affects their choice of gear. For example, if a palico has status attack boost, they will get a status weapon and the matching set.

Ultimately everyone should play what is most fun. Everyone hunting for weakness exploit end all be all is boring... I was very proud of my turtle lance build that is virtually uncartable, can block anything and takes minimal damage being a counter machine. Max def, constitution, guard, offensive guard, hunger free all because I got a 3 divine blessing 3 constitution 2 slot talisman. The discord I was on ridiculed my build so much I ended up leaving it. I've put a combined 10,000 hours into MH(Ps2), MHF(psp), MHFrU(psp) and MHTri(wii) I don't need an optimized build to finish a hunt. My skill/knowldge is more than enough to carry me at this point. I was a weapon only player on the psp, no traps, bombs, just go ham vs the monsters and I managed to get up to G** before the Dual Black Gravios quest was just too much of a dps test. I enjoy your content because you push fun over "meta" meta is boring, why the F do I want to play and look like everyone else? I want people to see me and be like, I wonder what build he's using not, oh... Another wex cookie cutter player, boooooooring. Keep your wex clown suits and enjoy your hunts that are maybe 1-2 minutes faster at the cost of infinite amounts of fun. On the terms of Palico, healing bubble, power drum and shock purrison are too good to not have so I have one of every palico subclass with those 3 skills. I have 1 full healer palico, one full trapper palico, one full fighter and one full bombardier as well. I rotate them depending on my goals. If I need a ruby or gem drop, well, sorry but pilfer it is. If I'm hunting with my lance, I'm already well protected so I bring fighter bomber. If I'm playing my spreadshot Magnashotgun, I bring a trapper with the fighter. I'm glad MHWorld got the game to become a global franchise, but the part of me that grew up being the only MH player in my surrounding area/possibly state hates what the community at large has decided how the game should be played... Like, I have a 2/3 evade extender 2/3 bubble dance 2 tier 2 slot talisman. That thing breaks the game for me. Every build I do has max evade with free evasion window. I used your SnS build idea to make a Dual Sword brutal strike build. Counter strike, Resuscitate, Atk 7 using tigrex blades. You're so damn mobile and deal good damage. If you're evasive your damage is boosted, if you get hit your damage gets boosted more. The build works so good! But even that would get criticized because no wex, no narga blades mleh... My character looks straight out of Assassin's Creed for that build too. Asthetics are inportant. Juryatodus and Anjanath sets have a soft spot for me. Juryatodus set also has a native 13 slots to work with just in it's base 5 piece set. Add a weapon with 2 and a talisman with 2 and have fun with that. Best for Lance/Gunlance builds though. Look like a prehistoric paladin (*.*)

Insect Glaive can basically blast dash anytime in air back to back to back to back and come down with 800+ dmg wyvern dives to the face whilst having ear plugs and flinch free built in. Yea, sorry Gun Lance in World you was bae. Here IG is just too good. I feel I can get around just as fast without the dog. I love the dogs but two Palicos is just objectively better in every way. They have better buffs, traps, provide more damage opportunities, possibly deal more damage themselfs, and on top of that they gather more materials and monster parts. Twin cats all the way. Fighter Palicos can get two different buffs that improve the damage YOU deal. Any buffs to improve your damage is way better than any damage they can deal. Bimbardier Palicos are fun but they are not as good for damage. Assist Palicos are great. Get one with both poison and shock traps and it’s fantastic. Gathering Palicos are great when farming. If you just aren’t feeling and wanna deal the best damage you can. I think an assist Palicos with both traps paired with a fighter Palicos with both buffs is the best pairing you can grab. As for status attack up which is what FightingCowboy recommended for anyone who also watches him. I run it paired with crit up large. I get procs every single time on every single fight. However I run poison. The poison damage over time that they can deal with crit large and status attack up is way more than any deal they can deal outright with anything else. Status attack up is great just don’t use it with para or sleep currently. Although I tried it with sleep and I still got one from time to time poison is the way to go. But ultimately it doesn’t really matter. All of them are good use whatever you like best. You can perform fine without ANY palicos or palamutes at. Hell if you jus want pure buffs and support go with a fighter and a healer. One to buff you one to heal you. Whatever you want it’s all good.

I've been trying to play with offensive skills in general and I love knockout king. Status attack up is kinda weird. I've had some success giving my dog a sleep weapon, status attack, plus the blitz scroll to make him attack faster. That combo I think worked a bit better but other scrolls he never pulls off sleeps.
Other than that, I think the reason I pull off sleeps is because of my gathering cat with the endemic life barrage (and a sleep toad is summoned). So it's definitely a big gamble and Attack Up L is probably better or Crit L

I actually didn't know most of what these abilities were, I had heard Gathering was broken OP but I thought it was just from the looting. I went for dual Gathering Palicos for that reason, just to get more loot, if they nerf Gathering palicos and remove the endemic life barrage, I'd be fine with that, otherwise I'd be happy with a Bombadier and a Healer or a Palamute and a Healer. Running sucks and Palamutes help alot with map traversal, but once you get used to the maps, wirebugs and camps they lose alot (not all) of that advantage.

Status weapons are good on palamutes though. I gave a sleep weapon to both my buddies at some point, palamute and palico, and on a monster that was weak to it they got 3 sleep procs off. Granted, it was a slow fight, but 1 or 2 should easily be possible.
