      While Tibetans certainly should have the right to decide their own fate, Tibet has been a part of the Chinese empire for centuries since Ghengis Khan conquered China and Tibet and unified them, and it is still part of China now. All I am saying is that the BBC made a statement of fact, it's not a value judgment.

      @@MrHW54 I am aware of that, of course that is unacceptable. Unfortunately, that doesn't change the fact that Tibet is a part of China. Hawaii and Texas and California are also part of America, their riches plundered by white people and native populations marginalized or entirely extinguished (worse than Tibet I would say). While they shouldn't be part of America, they are. Same goes for Tibet.

    If you guys are interested in the Tibetan culture and how Buddhism is incredibly influential in the lifestyle over there, definitely watch My Reincarnation. It's a really inspiring and educational documentary but it also touches on the intersection of modern life with that of the ancient traditions. I just think more people should see this movie! bitly .com/t3FuWB

    After 10 years, it's still disappointing that the BBC screened a series accepting the Chinese line that occupied Tibet is part of China. At the time I suppose it was hoped that, through trade, China would eventually accept Western values. I think they've learned to be a bit warier of Chinese govt claims now.
    Of course, treating monks like a curiosity, on a par with some unusual wild animal, is also patronising and stupid.

    @kotomoidealmcky: So Pakistan created this Chaos in Kashmir and on the other hand India gave refuge to Tibetan leader Dalai lama and also to many Tibetan who cross border to come to India risking their lives. When I was in New Delhi, I have heard stories of Chinese aggression from Tibetan people who used to work there.

    Even if you dislike all religions, what the Moaist government did to the tibetan people was inexcusable in every possible way.

    @nilbud Are the traditions and rituals of Tibetian Monks/nuns more superstitious than carrying a crucifix around or praying at the wall of a long destroyed temple? How about walking around a stone block in the desert? What about choosing no religion and have the ritual of smarting off about other peoples religious beliefs?

    • @Bzdm0
      @Bzdm0 3 года назад

      Buddhism is woven into Tibetan sense of Identity and wipe it would be equivalent of wiping Tibetan identity. People who are non-believers are free to be one. Forcing someone to follow the religion against their will is a sin for Tibetans. If you don’t believe in religion it’s okay but please learn to more accepting of other ideologies that differ from yours. Nobody is going to come after you with a pitchfork and force you be religious.

    Religions/Philosophies aren't always the best answer for what ails a society. That is clear, but for you to single out that particular belief structure as primitive superstitious with out addressing the over all failings of all belief structures is what i was pointing out. Turning to name calling is a good sign that one cannot accept ideas or criticism which counter your beliefs. Lets talk maturely and enjoy the ride.

    @pathfinder756 It's mostly propaganda both ways that make people think things are as bad as you say. All schools and most TV stations in Tibet still talk in Tibetan, and literacy and poverty were devastating before the Maoists took over. Tibet was a poor, highly illiterate country(well over half of the population couldn't read and non-monks were almost all entirely impoverished) country that was a Feudal Theocracy. The monasteries literally controlled everything on a feudal level.

    "in 1959 there were 6.3 million"
    I read Tsering Shakya's book "Dragon in the Land of Snows". He puts the 1959 population at ~1 million. Sure, Tibetans were killed during the Cultural Revolution, and you can term that genocide, mass murder, whatever. But presenting unsubstantiated historical demographic data is shoddy at best. Plus, it won't do a thing to advance the Tibetan cause. If you just want to argue demographics, then we won't know for sure until the Chinese archives are opened.

  • @MasterAsra
    @MasterAsra 13 лет назад

    @pathfinder756 Though I'm not saying either was good, but Tibet was absolutely terrible before the Maoists, and though they have less rights, the Chinese government has improved on a lot of things that the Tibetan Theocratic government didn't care about, like roads, infrastructure and public non-monastic schools. I'm just saying that it's not as blindly one-sided as people think. You should look up the religious-fueled laws and things that were going on before the Communists took over.

    @lycopene1 Dalai Lama has done more harm to Buddhism than anyone else in history. Tibetans lived as slaves under his rule, even minor offences were punished by amputation and even the gouging out of eyes. For more details see Michael Parenti's "Friendly Feudalism: The Tibet Myth"
