What I love about this discussion is that you can see so many of these tips being implemented and built upon in Kizzie's content. I am impressed with how Kizzie continues to grow as an interviewer and content creator, and I am happy to see his voice still growing.

Steve is so right about respecting your locals. I was a TO for smash for a few years and we had a constant issue with trash, messy bathroom, and just overall not respecting the venue. We ran the tournament at a local card shop. They were so good and understanding with us, but the players would show up and be loud, swearing, etc in front of hte customers. Felt like I was constantly playing parent to a bunch of players. Quit TOing because it stressed me out all the time. Now I'm just a regular ass Street Fighter player and i try to be as respectful as I can to the fact that these businesses host us often times purely out of love of community and that they really dont need us

Great subject matter! I think it's often hard for people to quantify the value of soft skills when it's something that technically everyone can do. Especially as people begin to become knowledgeable in these spaces, they can feel the ability to just regurgitate information is more important than its presentation.
I believe one of the differences between a good public speaker and a great one in fighting games is the ability to match tempo to action; many often let their points trail on beyond the course of a moment - they should treat it like speech bubbles to comic panels! And I feel the difference between a good commentator and a great one is their ability to coexist in that air with another person, and be able to adapt to and elevate their co-commentator.
Too often it seems as though people judge their commentary ability off their sole contribution to the production and value their worthiness to opportunities within this vacuum. As important as it is to find your own voice, especially for those with little public speaking experience, I think within the context of opportunity, it's really invaluable to develop your own following that falls in love with your sound; because as helpful as connections may be in the short-term, the numbers will speak louder than anything.
Tasty Steve is one of the best! Hope our top commentators can develop pipelines for future generations!

Matching cadence to the pace of play is important, but matching it to the moment is just as vital. Learning how to come to a swell for pivotal points is so huge in storytelling. You can examine the differences in tempo for MMA/NBA/golf/MLB commentary, but you can also look at how say a commentator's pace changes depending on how close to significant action points they are for say F1, the Kentucky Derby, or a 4x100m relay. Professional League "casters" or even Pokemon VGC ones are some of the best in the world at keeping viewers engaged and on the edge of their seats, but what's happening (or not happening) on-screen is objectively not hype-inducing; this is the power in letting joint storytelling create a suspension of disbelief. When commentators make overgeneralized negative statements on the game meta or characters/mechanics they do not enjoy, they don't realize the weight of their words and the massive impact they have on the viewing experience; it's essential to create a world inviting to any 'child' being born into that space for the first time.

If someone could help with this. How do you get into commentary? I'd like to try to get into it, but my locals have a dedicated crew, so I was just wondering how do you even get started?

I recommend that if you know any netplay bracket being done that you get a chance to hop on commentary for a specific game. If they're cool with it they can have you get on with someone knowledgeable and they get a backup commentator if someone can't make it for whatever reason

I used to do commentary for my local FGC and speedrun communities. I decided to stop because of my Pungeon Master tendencies overrode any proper commentary etiquette. Basically, I got too cringey with the dad jokes
9:46 With "Have A Partner", also make sure that you and your partner don't fulfill the same role. Most starting commentators go for play-by-play because it is easier to call the action on the screen, but having two at the same time doesn't really help with one talking over the others

  • @magnum567134

Is it difficult to remain impartial? Like say, your friend is playing and you're really rooting for them? Or maybe there's a player that you hate watching, but you don't wanna be shitting on them the whole time?

The 234 (same input as QCF or quarter circle forward) is called numpad notation, it comes from the number pad on a keyboard where 1 is down left and 9 is up right, and each number represents the corresponding 8-way direction (as well as 5, which means no direction). The inputs you see usually assume the character is facing right, so you have to mirror them if facing left.
A big exception is Tekken, where 1 and 2 are left/right punch, and 3 and 4 are left/right kick.

STOP SAYING "NICE"! There was a particular commentator in Dreamhack who would say "Nice launcher! Nice combo! Nice block!". That adds nothing to the conversation. WHY is it "nice"? Elaborate. Provide some insight. There is NEVER a case where a launcher is not "nice".

But you don't have as much time to elaborate compared to saying those things. Talking about a special interaction in the match can definitely be entertaining, but it's very difficult for commentators to do for fighting games considering how fast AND complicated they can be. Now that doesn't mean you shouldn't try or that is impossible, we can agree on that. But if you're looking for better commentary, why not try watching some match analysis videos instead?
