Trillium 2000

- In November 2000, we made our annual Thanksgiving trip to the Welland Canal for railfanning and boatwatching, staying at the Inn at Lock Seven with a view of both the canal and the railway. This video is a compilation of several days worth of activty on the Trillium Railway. At that time, the 108 was stationed at Merritton and the 110 at Port Colborne. 108 handled all the switching in St. Catharines and Thorold, then climbed the hill along the flight locks to the Fonthill Spur behind the Beer Store. 110 handled Port Colborne, then made a daily run to Feeder yard where cars were interchanged with the CN and CP. It then ran north along the canal to Thorold to meet the 108 and swapped cars with the Merritton crew. Each crew then returned to finish switching their respective territories. Unfortunately, by 2000 service had ended on the Pine St. Lead, but all other lines in the Thorold/St Catharines area are covered. Watch for the over and under shot at Merritton.
Fantastic brings back so many good memories of this locomotive when I was a boy
Happier days!
Very cool to see
Nicely covered branch line operation! These old switchers sound just great. Thx.
Wow this is an amazing amount of content to digest. At the same time makes me realize how much railway has been lost in St. Catharines and Thorold. Just looking at the Merritton yard I never seen any trains just sitting in the yard in 2022. You never really see any trains using the Merritton yard for switching at all. This is the first time I've seen the Townline Spur and Bridge over Grimsby Sub and it's wild journey down into Thorold😱 Incredible sight!! It's really sad to think that the rest of Grantham Spur is on life support at the this time. Although not declared dead. It would be great if the metal recycling on Glendale Avenue and those few spots along Easterchester would go back to rail. This would ensure it's uncertain future!
Great video. I enjoyed watching it.
Alco power plus small industries and the street running made for a sensory overload. The subject worth shooting even if overcast
MORE FMNUT goodies, heck of a hill too; MHL-410a is CN type ID on switcher (S3 switchers 110+108+308) mu cables on the front hood too
Tracks everywhere in this place. Is it still around? Dreamy place to live for rail fan.
See my reply to Lucask below......
All the street running tracks are gone, but most is still around. The problem is these are all industrial spurs and the industry’s are not expanding or in some cases closing. This is a great video to show how it was.
Does this railway still exist? Its so awesome it would be a shame if it was abandoned.
It still exists, but handles much less traffic than seen in the video. The street running portion to the paper plant has been abandoned due to kids setting fire to the approach trestle to the CN overpass in Merritton. The paper plant now ships exclusively by truck. I believe most of the business is on the Port Colborne end of the line now.
@@fmnut ...and has new owners as of a year or so ago.
Love it! Any more from Ontario?
Try some of these: ruclips.net/p/PLnZOuPXh5uwSgvmDooV_rCXbhFQvpg5ur
Also, some Ontario in here: ruclips.net/p/PLnZOuPXh5uwS_hYswQpmYzSWCSh1rUkGk
Also, my two Algoma Central videos.
I went there last fall first time, no more S13. Too late
108 still runs.
Are both switchers #108 and #110 Alco SW2s?
MLW S-13
Is that some of the old Niagara St. Catherines & Toronto trackage? I swear 0:30 looks like the location of a N St. C & T streetcar photo.
Yes. The Town Line, Pine St. and Fonthill spurs were all former NS&T trackage. Also the trackage in St. Catharines.
0:30 is at the junction of the Fonthill and Pine St spurs. The Fonthill spur was originally the NS&T line to Port Colborne, CN cut it back to Fonthill and later to the edge of Thorold.
What became of the loco ?
It's still running today
I believe the 110 is scrapped, while the 108 is still in use. The line is a lot less busy than shown in these videos.
@@fmnut 110 is out of service, still alive though.
@@TheTVGuy45 thanks. I read online that it was being stripped for parts and would be cut up.
@@fmnut It's a spare parts unit for 108. I never heard about it being cut up though.
what's the model of that alco?
MLW S 13. Canada only model.
@@fmnut a nice unit... are these still in operation?... i know some shortline up there's gotta still be using them
@@25mfd 108 is still used, 110 is sidelined as a parts source. There are also some other examples active in Canada.
I don’t enjoy this I can’t hear a horn and o don’t like it idk why
