What I think is that both endings are cannon. Since little planet can flow through time and there are multiple timelines I think both the good and bad endings are cannon just that we keep getting shown the bad ending because of the race with metal sonic is one of the most iconic things in the series and stardust speedway bad future captures the atmosphere better.
Not how I thought things would go. I imagine Sonic faced Palmtree Panic's boss in the Bad Future, learning what's at stake. Over the next couple zones he gathers the Time Stones and destroys generators. By Stardust Speedway, Sonic has 5 of the 6 Time Stones, but fails to destroy Stardust Speedway's generator. Sonic doesn't get the last Time Stone and by extension ensures a Good Future, until Metallic Madness Zone.
