My wife and I saw this film at the theater, and we saw it twice. And I think it is the best film of the year so far. An absolute masterpiece. When we saw it the first time it was in one of the larger theaters in the multiplex, and by the time we had our second viewing, it had been moved to one of the smaller theaters, and while it was still the same amazing film, some parts didn't have quite the same impact as on the larger screen. For example the part you mentioned with Ed Harris and the flight ✈️ over his head, much less impact. I think this is a film that really needs the scope and scale of the big screen to truly hit fully, and that's probably why it stayed so long in theaters. It is a very cinematic work. I am glad that films are still being made with this level artistry, a level that was once almost the norm, but unfortunately is now few and far between. Like you said, this is a movie,..a Rocky 2 and 3, Back to the Future trilogy Terminator 2 level movie.
I had to order this twice from Target. the 1st copy went m.i.a. in the mail. Thankfully the replacement copy only took 2 days to arrive and I'll be watching it tonight. I went with the 4K slip, didn't even realize it didn't have a blu copy included till I opened it.
I actually got my first 4K tv today and put this on to test it out and immediately understood why people are going nuts over this HDR grade. Jesus Christ it's beautiful. 6:40 Definitely not a controversial take. A legacy-quel even better than BR 2049.
What you're talking about Ken is on point..Marvel movies are popcorn movies..But the Green mile,Shawshank redemption, Unforgiven,Contact,etc these are films..they make u care about the characters and the story..Those are all classics..and they deserve to be in that conversation and how many sequels are as good as the original or better?? 2 come to my mind maybe 3..Back to the Future 2,,Aliens,and Terminator 2..Hopefully in Dec we can add Avatar 2..but sequels better then the original ...Maverick deserves to be on that short list we will see my friend..

Walked out of it and told my wife I have to get on upgrading our home theater system. Already owned a Sony 4K player but everything else was basic 1080p HD, 5.1 audio on a 55" Samsung tv that was 10 years old. During Amazon Prime days did upgrade my reciever to a Sony Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 reciever but continued to use my old Sony speakers in a 5.1 configuration. We took are son to see it on Fourth of July and in the car on the way home he told in the car I needed to get my butt in gear on upgrading the rest of the system. In August I finally chose a 75" Samsung QLED and had Best Buy professionally wall mount it. They also hooked up my new Dolby Atmos reciever and calibrated it to my speaker set up at the time. I then went to work on upgrading/ adding speakers. I had a Klipsch subwoofer that was only a year old and went back to them for all of my new speakers, new mains, new center channel, two new atmos speakers for the additional channels and did the recalibration myself. Bought Top Gun Maverick digitally in 4K in September and have watched it twice and it was just as good as being in the theater. Preordered the 4K two pack of the original and Maverick from Amazon and recieved it on Halloween. The 4K disc is even better than the digital copy, picture is amazing, you can even tell from scene to scene what days Tom Cruise didn't bother to shave. The audio is even better, I thought I had the volume setting figured out on the new system but had it to dial it down seven for this film on disc. I have said since my initial viewing of this film that it is a sequel much like The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, T2: Judgement Day, and The Dark Knight that surpasses the original film in multiple ways. Since August alone I have replaced or added over 50 movies in the 4K format to my physical media library and several of them haven't been worth the upgrade while others are amazing. Top Gun Maverick is the cream of the crop of 4K disc. Many people are crediting this movie as possibly saving the theater chains since the pandemc started as it got the over 40 crowd back into theaters and for multiple viewings. For me it has done the exact opposite I spent over $5000.00 in just over a six month period this year and now have a true cinema/ theater quality experience at home. It will really take a huge movie like this to get me back in a theater again. Indiana Jones 5 and Cruises two Mission Impossible sequels come to mind but not much else.
It’s a shame they screwed up the color timing of the Blu-ray so bad. The clarity and definition are beautiful! I got the Blu-ray, the standard 4K steelbook, the Walmart 4K steelbook and pre-order of the two film 4K steelbooks collector’s set coming in December. The original film is nothing more than a glorified extended music video. A great one, but that’s it. This one? It took everything awesome about the original and amped it to eleven, then added some real humanity and depth, wrapped it all in a blanket, and sent it to us. Tom Cruise gave that PSA before the film thanking the audience for coming to see it (I kind of wish that had been added to the start of the film on disc), and I want to thank Tom Cruise, not just for this film but for taking the time to record that message. It obviously paid off. It takes place in 2019, from what I remember hearing, based on his calendar and where the dates fell on it. Crap on Marvel or I will. They haven’t been the “hot ticket in town” for over three years now. Ironic, considering they’re producing more content than ever but their audience is dwindling along with the love of that content. I haven’t heard a single person say Maverick isn’t better than the original. That’s not a hot take at all. I introduced six people to it, all loved it. Two of them had never seen the original so I showed them that first. One of those didn’t really like the original but ended up loving Maverick. I can list a couple flaws, all nitpicks. The biggest flaw though is Slider not appearing in a cameo at Iceman’s funeral. Still a minor one. Paramount’s practices lately with the whole Blu-ray included/not included inconsistency is driving me nuts and it’s costing them money. I won’t buy a 4K that doesn’t come with the Blu-ray so I’ve skipped a lot of newer releases.
Love this release. Thought the video was reference quality. I cant believe it, but I expected more from the atmos track. Felt it was a little toned down and dialed back. I think the afterburners and F14 jet sound effects are way more punchy in Top Gun. Also felt the height channels were better utilized on the original top gun 4k bluray. This is just my experience in my 9.2 channel home theater. This is not a bad sounding disc at all. But i feel Mad Max Fury Road, Top Gun, Blade Runner 2049, Ford Vs Ferrari, and even the new Heat release all have more dynamic sound than Maverick. Its still a wonderful atmos mix. Just a bit less amazing than expected. Cheers
Just had the 4K Steelbook arrive at my doorstep today. I'm someone who's not made the upgrade to a 4K tv and player and wanted the 4K disc for future proofing myself but also wanted the bluray disc as well. So I got the steelbook that had both. Even tho I'm not normally a steelbook collector.
Maverick is the best picture of 2022. I will buy when it drops. I have the panasonic player and rumor has it, that it won't play. Maybe by the time the price drops my player gets the needed upgrade.
Being an OG Top Gun fan from when it came out... and then seeing the new film (in theater) - I have to agree it's a perfct sequel. Also - the 2 films are truly companion films. Sooooooo amazing. Hope you are well!

No controversy. Top Gun Maverick is a better film. I wasn't that big a fan of the original, so I had low expectations going to see the sequel. I was blown away. Saw it 2x in theaters. Once in IMAX and once in a Dolby Theater. Phenomenally fantastic. I'm in the process of upgrading my home theater equipment. Once that's accomplished, I will buy the 4K UHD Blu-ray and hopefully re-live the experience. Based on this review, it looks like I will be well rewarded.

I agree with it being better than the first Top Gun. I think Tom Cruise knew what the weak points of the original and fixed those issues. The original Top Gun leaned more onto the love story aspect and this one had a better balance.
@@SumDumGy I guess I just felt the relationship was built better and it was balanced out with the action. I remember as a kid watching the first movie thinking top gun was a love story... I just didn't feel that way now. It was more balanced, but it also may be that me seeing it at a different point in life changed my perception.
@@staceylynn4292 I’d still consider the love story aspect of the original not only a pretty minor part of the plot, but also a very shallow one, whereas here Maverick and Penny have fracases of history to the point where she pre-dates the first film entirely. These two people know each other and one another’s lives very well. They have depth and chemistry. They’ve grown as people, together and apart. Penny is very much a guiding light for Maverick here, as opposed to a crush or infatuation that Charlie was the first time.

Top Gun: Maverick is one of my favorite movies in recent history. I had a blast in the theater and now I get to experience the 4K in my media room. People are sick of Hollywood's dogshit offerings (ex: Disney live action remakes, modern Star Wars and Marvel films plus the plethora of woke trash being propped up by leftist media outlets). Bad ass action movies reminiscent of the 80s and 90s are still an amazing genre that needs to be kept alive.
Can't agree more with your take on this Ken. Watching the original is not a must but I'd recommend anyone to watch it first, it adds so much more, especially the piano scene😥. I think Marvel are directly aimed at the younger generation, get them into the theater and rinse as much money out of them as possible without much depth or story. Purely the thoughts of an old timer btw😅

The digital cameras and Imax cameras have reached a level of quality of film in a certain format .To the ability to create this film effect. When 4k cameras first were on the scene .Was the fact it was so clear and bright that it lost the effect of film styles in the recording. Now as you can see 👀 literally it's bright and clear but had the 1980s ambiance you feel when watching Maverick. If you have watched Ambulance the Movie is still reference quality.
This movie is better than the original Top Gun, no doubt. I had nothing bad to say about the original and although it was a product of it's time, this movie was a lover letter to people who enjoy movies. Tom Cruise should enjoy the accolades he received for this!! I really like the cast in total as well.
I have different opinion of the video. Recorded my review. Hoping to have it up later. As for visuals, it is NOT a Top 10 disc IMO. But the audio makes up for it. It really rips! I was pushing my system so hard that the amp started overheating and cutting out! I had to pause movie and direct a fan on the amp to cool down. After that, no more issues...except for picking up stuff that fell to floor due to all the rumbling. LOL
I waited until the 4K to watch it because I didn’t care for the 1st movie but I gotta say the hype was real I found this one a million times better I think it’s because the stakes were higher the 1st movie was training to be top in the class and the new movie it’s training for mission impossible then the 3rd act you get “Behind Enemy lines” which I didn’t see coming lmao
I saw the movie in theaters and loved it. I wish I went to the XD version of the movie, but I was able to secure a steelbook of it, for the reasons mentioned in the video. For me its easier to use a blu ray player as I only have the 4k player at my house, Im living somewhere else right now so access to the 4k is there but not as much as a blu ray player. The reasons why I dont prefer steelbooks are because of the way the discs are layered on top of each other, and my uncoordinated self will scratch them to kingdom come when they are like that, so I double dipped and got the 4k version only. I will find another 2 disc case, make the 4k and blu ray a set on its own and just keep the 4k in the steelbook itself.
Perfect 10 movie for me, and also movie of the year. This was hailed as the ultimate anti-woke macho movie of the year, and it truly wiped the floor with literally everything else that has come out this year. Just goes to show what most people actually want in a movie.
Fantastic film, it holds up for me sound wise, obviously picture is not the IMAX we all want, unless of course there is a IMAX enhanced capable television out there, I know it has a receiver. It's my #1 for 2022, should have been multiverse of madness but too much hype for what it produced imo. My steelbook from Best Buy was also in perfect condition always makes things better.

Both are great films, but “RRR” > “Top Gun: Maverick” in terms of theater experience. I hope “RRR” eventually gets a 4K release in it’s original release form.
This movie would have made a whole lot more sense being set in 2010 and I REALLY could have done without "Great Balls of Fire" again.....and I'm not sure why Maverick didn't get on one knee for Penny by the end of the movie...otherwise, it's good stuff for sure.
Yes, this movie is Awesome, and one of that "key" reason is definitely because Tom made sure that it was for the Fans, and NOT for Wokeness sake. Unlike Disney's recent MARVEL movie flops and failures in the box office due to NONSENSE Political "WOKE" AGENDA (Wakanda Forever?). Trying to cater to a very small minority group of people with "Mental Health ISSUES" and not making a decent Good Entertaining movie, will only result in a lack luster box office sales. Disney's executives had recently made it clear that their movies are Not WOKE enough, so that should tell you which direction they want to go, and what type of PROPAGANDA campaigns that they will be FORCING down movie goers throats, no matter the lost in box office revenues.
I don't see any difference with B.R and 4k.. my friends said that i need a 4k player unit not my Xbox series X ..plus special cable and have the settings right.. i don't know any of that and sure as hell not gonna get a $700 player... I'll stick with my B R movies..

I agree! We saw it on a Dolby Cinema screen. Only way to see movie now is Dolby or Imax. Nothing else compares.

People are sick of Hollywood's dogshit offerings (ex: Disney live action remakes, modern Star Wars and Marvel films plus the plethora of woke trash being propped up by leftist media outlets). Bad ass action movies reminiscent of the 80s and 90s are still an amazing genre that needs to be kept alive.
Can't agree more with your take on this Ken. Watching the original is not a must but I'd recommend anyone to watch it first, it adds so much more, especially the piano scene😥. I think Marvel are directly aimed at the younger generation, get them into the theater and rinse as much money out of them as possible without much depth or story. Purely the thoughts of an old timer btw😅

Hundreds are being made each year, in all this amount, do really think that it would be hard find 10 perfect movies?,..really? The truth is that there are some films that widely considered "perfect ", but if one chooses to nitpick, then nothing is perfect. Examples spring to mind, but I won't bother.

Probably a great chance of it, but how many films in that history are we even aware of? Who defines perfect? What are the parameters? Can you find many people who could agree on those parameters? The digital cameras and Imax cameras have reached a level of quality of film in a certain format .To the ability to create this film effect. When 4k cameras first were on the scene .Was the fact it was so clear and bright that it lost the effect of film styles in the recording. Now as you can see 👀 literally it's bright and clear but had the 1980s ambiance you feel when watching Maverick. If you have watched Ambulance the Movie is still reference quality.
This movie is better than the original Top Gun, no doubt. I had nothing bad to say about the original and although it was a product of it's time, this movie was a lover letter to people who enjoy movies. Tom Cruise should enjoy the accolades he received for this!! I really like the cast in total as well.
I have different opinion of the video. Recorded my review. Hoping to have it up later. As for visuals, it is NOT a Top 10 disc IMO. But the audio makes up for it. It really rips! I was pushing my system so hard that the amp started overheating and cutting out! I had to pause movie and direct a fan on the amp to cool down. After that, no more issues...except for picking up stuff that fell to floor due to all the rumbling. LOL

I waited until the 4K to watch it because I didn’t care for the 1st movie but I gotta say the hype was real I found this one a million times better I think it’s because the stakes were higher the 1st movie was training to be top in the class and the new movie it’s training for mission impossible then the 3rd act you get “Behind Enemy lines” which I didn’t see coming lmao

I saw the movie in theaters and loved it. I wish I went to the XD version of the movie, but I was able to secure a steelbook of it, for the reasons mentioned in the video. For me its easier to use a blu ray player as I only have the 4k player at my house, Im living somewhere else right now so access to the 4k is there but not as much as a blu ray player. The reasons why I dont prefer steelbooks are because of the way the discs are layered on top of each other, and my uncoordinated self will scratch them to kingdom come when they are like that, so I double dipped and got the 4k version only. I will find another 2 disc case, make the 4k and blu ray a set on its own and just keep the 4k in the steelbook itself.
Perfect 10 movie for me, and also movie of the year.
This was hailed as the ultimate anti-woke macho movie of the year, and it truly wiped the floor with literally everything else that has come out this year. Just goes to show what most people actually want in a movie.

Fantastic film, it holds up for me sound wise, obviously picture is not the IMAX we all want, unless of course there is a IMAX enhanced capable television out there, I know it has a receiver. It's my #1 for 2022, should have been multiverse of madness but too much hype for what it produced imo. My steelbook from Best Buy was also in perfect condition always makes things better.
I love this movie. Saw it in theaters and bought the 4k steelbook and this is my favorite 4k disc of all time. Also, is OLED or QLED better? Cause I have a QLED 4k samsumg and is an amazing TV. Just wondering your thoughts on that.
I too have a 82" Samsung Qled so believe me I'm not being biased when I say OLED is much better.

Both are great films, but “RRR” > “Top Gun: Maverick” in terms of theater experience. I hope “RRR” eventually gets a 4K release in it’s original release form.

Yes, this movie is Awesome, and one of that "key" reason is definitely because Tom made sure that it was for the Fans, and NOT for Wokeness sake. Unlike Disney's recent MARVEL movie flops and failures in the box office due to NONSENSE Political "WOKE" AGENDA (Wakanda Forever?). Trying to cater to a very small minority group of people with "Mental Health ISSUES" and not making a decent Good Entertaining movie, will only result in a lack luster box office sales. Disney's executives had recently made it clear that their movies are Not WOKE enough, so that should tell you which direction they want to go, and what type of PROPAGANDA campaigns that they will be FORCING down movie goers throats, no matter the lost in box office revenues.
I don't see any difference with B.R and 4k.. my friends said that i need a 4k player unit not my Xbox series X ..plus special cable and have the settings right.. i don't know any of that and sure as hell not gonna get a $700 player... I'll stick with my B R movies..
