- The SMEG is made in Italy and it shows in the craftsmanship of this adorable retro 50's style refrigerator, which I purchased from Amazon.com ($1,999.00 USD + free shipping). NOTE: My SMEG is the "right hand" model w/freezer compartment. If you want the handle to be on the right side of the door, that would be the "left hand" model. The pink & white storage container on top of my SMEG was also purchased from Amazon.com (TheWarmHome Storage Bin $28.99 + free shipping). I was seriously considering buying a SMEG. Between the video and the comments, I won't waste my money now. Thank you to everybody who's getting the word out about quality and customer service.

Our refrigerator stopped working 2 years after the purchase. Support from the company was nonexistent. They were more interested in making sure we knew the fridge was out of warranty than helping us find find a service technician. It took months to get the thing repaired and cost for parts was through the roof. Fridge is pretty, but it will not last. Don't waste your money like we did on SMEG.
How much is the repair and how long did it last?
Totally agree. Very poor quality. Do not last long. Just like a Ferrari, looks nice but always breaking down. This is sadly typically Italian. Very poor quality products with high inflated prices.
Here’s the thing. So many people live their lives in such pragmatic ways yet when you examine their lives they’re absolutely miserable. A lot of people go about their lives visually unconscious, lacking poetry. Yeah, this refrigerator is more expensive and doesn’t have all the bells and whistle‘s that other refrigerators might in this day and age of over-design and buying everything on the Internet. Personally I totally get where she’s coming from. She’s happy. What’s that worth? Let it go!
I have one in white! And I LOVE MY SMEG - it's sooooo cute. And yes, I open it from the top corner. Believe it or not, I renovated my ENTIRE kitchen around this little baby. I built her a special niche to fit into and I installed a little cabinet right next to her for company, lol. Seriously, I do love this fridge. I needed help figuring out how to put the inside together. Thanks for the instructions!

I can’t believe the handle doesn’t open the door. 🤦🏻♀️ So awesome otherwise. 😍
Firstly I would agree but I think it is likely a safety issue as the old ratchet design as cool as it was had one major flaw and that’s if a child is stupid enough to get into the fridge, the ratchet closure prevented the child pushing the door open from the inside. I remember as a child that when putting a fridge out for hard rubbish collection, it was a requirement to remove the fridge door for safety of children.
It is particularly crappy as it’s an aspect I liked of the fridge.
The handle does open the door..u just need to pull on it pretty hard because the seal is so great.
That bag on top of it really takes away from the look.
The metal bars go on the egg trays to stop them falling out. The lids are for the plastic trays but not with eggs in them. They will fit if you wedge them in. I've had a smeg pink fridge freezer for over 20 years and it squeaks! Gotta oil it I guess. I have the pink smeg range and washing machine, I love them!

Definitely not worth 2 grand. Everything it offers are very much ordinary.
Those covers go right in if you soak them in hot water for about 1/2 hour before you put them in.

Pull out the frig just a bit more or move it to the left and you can open the door wider.
I love the look of it but that freezer is smaller than one we had in our 1955 model.😮

I was thinking about getting Smeg full size refrigerator, but I read reviews and problems having product and so on, I decided not to purchase it , though do owned Smeg drip coffee maker, two slice toaster and milk frother and hopefully next purchase would be Smeg mini kettle ,lol, the only thing if Smeg Co. innervated - toaster comes with dustcover lid, I owned retro style De'Longhi kettle and toaster set and toaster comes with dustcover lid and it's a beautiful set and this set going in my office , so I needed Smeg small appliances for my kitchen , lol,
I live in Italy where the Smeg is actually made (Emilia Romagna region) and I wanted to know if your Smeg still works? Any chace we can see the rest of the kitchen?
Yes, as of November 2nd, 2022, my pink SMEG still works the same as the first time I plugged it in. I keep the temperature control set no higher than 2 and unplug the SMEG every 6 months-1 year to allow the freezer to defrost. I love my SMEG!
Hi! I had the same issue opening the door to my skeg fridge. I contacted Skeg directly and they sent a tech to install a tiny piece of plastic (that's what it looked like) that fixed the problem.

There are paints out there that you can use for appliances. Before you install get the paint and choose your color for a more affordable frig.
Happy for you that you got what you wanted... Please, it that frzr 'frost-free' ? It appears like the fridge-frzrs from years ago that were not frost-free, that is, with plastic flop-doors and the cooling power appears to be a bottom cold-plate and not a fan-cooled design. Sure would not want a fridge that I had to defrost manually, regardless of the die-to-have-color. You have a lovely presentation here, and enjoyed your video.

Hi !! There’s a way to fit your two useless pieces haha! I just bought my SMEG and with lots of effort I manage to fit them in and they work nicely. Keep trying cause they definitely works. I thought you meant the two plastic drawers which I still can’t guess where they fit hahaha, apart from that I’m in love with my fridge ❤️

I finally figured out how to get those 2 egg covers installed and made a video about it, just in case you and I aren't the only ones that had a hard time getting them in. 😉 Those 2 plastic "drawers" don't fit into anything. Would you believe that our GE refrigerator is 51 years old already and it just got broken just a year ago? The technician said it can still be repaired if the motor will be replaced. The main question is will that expensive ref match the life span of GE hotpoint knowing that the price of GE is way cheaper than SMEG? If I can only share the picture of our ref, I'll share it here. 😁

@The secular humanist thank you! From what I’ve been reading, many people agree with you. I want a retro look, so I’ve narrowed it down to UNIQUE or CHAMBERS. If I can find out which one has an ice maker. SMEG actually replied and told me theirs has a manual ice maker but none are plumbed. I’m ok with a manual ice maker, I’m done with any fridge that has water/ice in the door.
Want to add, the Smeg fab38 is the only one that has a manual ice maker. You add water, twist a knob to get the ice out but it’s not plumbed. From what I’ve found out so far the Smeg (not sure if all of them are) is the only one that’s frost free. The Unique is electric as well as solar. I think I’m going with Unique.
As far as colors go, Smeg is #1 and the only one to offer pink, but you can even customize colors with a chart on their website. If the others offer pink, I haven’t found it yet. My choices for colors are pink or light blue, 2nd choice would be the mint green.

i always loved the look.........BUT i cant get past the price and the size! I'M TALLER THAN THE FRIDGE!! lol. and i need a freezer too. i understand that people in europe have smaller items because houses and apartments are smaller than americans. its just not for me.
Also mainly because they consume much less food and don't buy huge quantities at once.
Never again. When I completed my Kitchen renovation about 5 years ago I bought all "premium" smeg appliances for a total of 15K. An upright oven, rangehood, side by side fridge, dishwasher and they threw in a microwave. Never again. At the end of the two year warranty period all the buttons had fallen off the rangehood, cables were loose and the filters were extremely flimsy plus the light bulbs blew and it costs $200 to replace the whole unit as you cant just change the bulbs! Dishwasher has been repaired 3 times and now it is leaking and I have been quoted $800 to repair it! The upright oven paint is coming off around the door and the oven light packed it in. The fridge has been repaired twice under warranty and once out of warranty as a good will gesture which was appreciated but not enough to revisit this brand ever again
Totally agree. These Smeg appliances look nice but don't last. Always something going wrong with them. Typically Italian, very poor workmanship.

SMEG Fridge out of warranty is WORTHLESS, for a landfill site near you. Don’t. SMEG Toaster, Kettle ok - Fridge Freezer will ‘cost’ you around GBP1200 -1500 over 4 years and that is ridiculous. They just see you as a mug to join the company income stream. Be Warned!

Australian consumer advocacy body, Choice, described this fridge as by far the worst they’d ever tested. It may look pretty, but it’s obviously over-priced junk. Avoid.
The Smeg 38RCRAU model was the one in question. “Appalling” was one of the many adjectives to describe its overall performance.

The warmest place in the fridge is on the door, why are we encouraged to put eggs there, makes no sense.
Eggs don't even need to be stored in a fridge and even the warmest place in a fridge is still cool so I don't understand why you're complaining about it.
