CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) gives water to Jesus on his way to his death.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This 1959 version of Lew Wallace's best-selling novel, which had already seen screen versions in 1907 and 1926, went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Adapted by Karl Tunberg and a raft of uncredited writers including Gore Vidal and Maxwell Anderson, the film once more recounts the tale of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), who lives in Judea with his family during the time that Jesus Christ was becoming known for his "radical" teachings. Ben-Hur's childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) is now an ambitious Roman tribune; when Ben-Hur refuses to help Messala round up local dissidents on behalf of the emperor, Messala pounces on the first opportunity to exact revenge on his onetime friend. Tried on a trumped-up charge of attempting to kill the provincial governor (whose head was accidentally hit by a falling tile), Ben-Hur is condemned to the Roman galleys, while his mother (Martha Scott) and sister (Cathy O'Donnell) are imprisoned. But during a sea battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of commander Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins), who, in gratitude, adopts Ben-Hur as his son and gives him full control over his stable of racing horses. Ben-Hur never gives up trying to find his family or exact revenge on Messala. At crucial junctures in his life, he also crosses the path of Jesus, and each time he benefits from it. The highlight of the film's 212 minutes is its now-legendary chariot race, staged largely by stunt expert Yakima Canutt. Ben-Hur's Oscar haul included Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for Heston, and Best Supporting Actor for Welsh actor Hugh Griffith as an Arab sheik.

One of my favorite things about this movie is that Wyler purposefully didn’t show Christ’s face in respect
It's more effective in this way.
Definitely more effective. It is why Ben Hur exists. The book is about Jesus, but like uh, seemingly not? The centurion scene is great, he has this pompous attitude, but back down when feeling truly judged. Not even a religious person at all myself, but the symbolism is potent.
I have 2 tattoos that dont show Jesus' face neither. Definitely out of respect for our Lord.
@@anarchy4133 Doesn't the Bible forbid making markings on the skin o.O
@@jamesboulger8705 Same as sinning, but we are all guilty of that. That’s why we should except Jesus Christ’s gift, on the cross he paid for ALL our sins.
All we have to do his except he did this for us and believe through faith. (The rest is secondary & not as important)
What has this man done to deserve this?
He spoke the truth.
What truth?
The truth he spoke was a lie. That lie being of His existence.
@@superfrank2257 then why early Christians die for spreading the Gospel?
Did you think people just willing take their life for spreading lie?
No I don't think...
He was born to face that! If He didn’t face all that, we would not be talking about Him 2 thousand years later!

One of the most powerful scenes... The look of Judah's eyes suddenly change as he realizes whom he is helping...
As a kid seeing this for the 1st time in the early 60s in a theatre i remember the scene left a lasting impression...it was a big part of the movie and its a giant movie
@@MrPacedan wow.. that's great..
Yes, he is helping the same one who once helped him in the same way.

This scene is a wonderful counterpoint to the previous clip, where Christ gave Ben Hur the water. It's an incredibly powerful and moving moment in a wonderful movie.

Bens face says it all. The circle is complete. Jesus stares deep into his eyes and Ben realises " it's him, it's him, I know you, you lifted me and gave me hope ". Beautiful scene, just wonderful how we all know, that not a word is being said but it is clear we ALL understand.
One of the five greatest movies of all time. Enobled to even greater heights by this glorious scene. Christ's Love and Forgiveness are so all encompassing that he drives the anger and hatred from Judahs heart. Even better, at the end of this classic film, Judah holds Esther and whispers to her, "Almost at the moment he died I heard him say, Father Forgive them. For they know not what they do." "Even then?" "Even then," was his reply. And I felt his voice take the sword from my hand." This film sends a message to all of us. That love and forgiveness transcend all else. The greatest Biblical Epic of all time. With an even deeper message.
@@donaldschmidt2990 A great comment from you Donald. I agree completely.
The most compelling I've ever seen....
I like to think (I hope it's not obvious)...that Ben didn't know who he was helping, he just knew he was given compassion and saw the chance to do the same, and more than water, that was the real gift for Jesus
Amen to that..
Ben Hur's expressions were priceless. Pity, concern, kindness and bewilderment, amazement and reverence
That is because Charlton Heston was a superior actor. No one in Hollyweird today can match him.
The Message Is Clear: JESUS Has SAVED Us, Now Its Time We 'Pay' HIM Back For What HE Has Done.
Hes pissed af at the end though and wants to help him
In those 2 or 3 short seconds and without a word or a sound, Charlton Heston conveyed all those emotions you mentioned. no actor today can pull that off.
Charlton Heston is a born actor. His perfect & superb face expressions bear testimony to this. No Hollywood actor can replace him in this matter. Only a best acter be able to change naturally his face expressions such an effective manner. Here disappears the boundary line that separating acting & reality.
I love how Jesus takes a moment to look at Judah, as if he wasn’t expecting the kindness he showed to that dying slave so long ago to pay off like this. Like, he literally is God; beyond all the human fear and pain he has chosen to endure, he knows everything is gonna end well. He doesn’t really need Ben-Hur’s help in any way. But he takes that water anyway, as a sign of acknowledgement and respect for this man’s deep devotion and compassion. It’s his way of saying “well done, son”.
Ben Hur's expression says it all, there is nothing he could have done to stop prophecy , Yet even then felt honored to partake in it.
Él señor es mi pastor nada me faltará
His expression was him realising that this is the same man who gave me water when I was a slave.
Precioso lo que dice...
Amo esta escena la expresión de su rostro al ver que Jesús fue aquel hombre el que le había calmado su sed y le dio fuerzas para seguir viviendo

Ben Hur for me is still the best film ever made. It’s so emotional, compelling, heart-breaking, vicious, violent, and uplifting at the end. Personally I’ve never seen a better film. Admittedly it does have a wonderful story as a back-drop, and because it’s set in Biblical times it will never date, but it’s still the best I’ve ever seen.

I am not a Christian, but tears come to my eyes whenever I watch the two scenes of Christ and Ben Hur giving water to each other.
Que pena que no seas creyente de la verdad absoluta que es el señor Jesucristo.
Those tears are a sign God has favored you. All those great things. The Good News about Christ is all true! Allow yourself to believe. You are a heartbeat away. 🎉
❤❤❤❤ --> NO CGI here !! Only real people
Jesus love you brother, believe in him because he believes in you, accept him as your Lord and Savior.
Hi there! Jesus is real. I remember watching these scenes as a child and being touched by them even though at the time I did not know that Christ is indeed real. In 2009, The Lord Jesus revealed Himself to me as I cried out to God to forgive me of all my sins.
Also, it is Jesus Christ both in the Old and New testament. I know He is not the Father and He is the beloved Son of God the Father, but He is the Lord our God our creator from the beginning , the Alpha and the Omega who revealed himself to his people then and now. King David knew the LORD our God our maker Jesus Christ the Messiah and so did Abraham, Moses, Jacob and all the people and prophets of God (ZECHARIAH 12:10). As gentile believers we are grafted in the same old vine when we chose to believe in Jesus. Jesus is the vine, the true source of life for us all believers who are the branches both Jews and gentiles. (JOHN 15:5)
1 John 2:
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning.
24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
Charlton Heston's facial acting is wonderful: Ben-Hur knows there is nothing he could've done to stop the prophecy, and even felt honoured to have partaken in it.
Heartbreaking to see Jesus like this :'(
Amen
Its alright 3 days later he rises again
Could have been worse

@@julez5680 Don't be heartbroken. Jesus did this because God sent Him to cleanse the world of it's sins by His Passion, Death and Resurrection. If Jesus never came into this world, we would all go to Hell.
When i was growing up in the early seventies, we did not have dvd s or vhs at the time. Every Easter I used to watch this with my mom and dad when it came on tv. Cried my eyes out in certain scenes every time i watched this. This is imo one of the best movies ever. Charlton Heston was wonderful in this. The scene where his character is so thirsty and the soldiers will not give him any water, and Jesus comes and gives Judah Ben-Hur water was great. I read Mr Heston's autobiography and he said the man who played the soldier was an extra on the set and had not really acted before, but he did one heck of a job in that scene. One of the best scenes in that movie.
Thanks for your comment. The same feelings I always had watching this movie on Polish TV :)

Remember that movie Pay it Forward this scene reminds me of that. Jesus showed Ben Hur mercy and gave him water when he needed it. It was touching that Ben Hur (at first) unknowingly granted that same mercy to Jesus and received the revelation of whom he was when he saw HIS face. Mercy shown to just one person can impact the lives of many
Beautifully said.

This movie is and remains my all time favorite. There are scenes in it that never cease to move me no matter how often I've seen them. This is definitely one of them - and all without a single word spoken.

On one hand, you're right. On another, we all crucified Christ on account of our sins being upon Him. We are all responsible for His death. The good news is He died for all of us, and rose again, and if we accept Him as Lord and Savior, He will forgive us and change us to be more like Him.
Oh, I know. But the reason Jesus had to die in the first place was because we were separated from God because of our sins.

Dieser Film bleibt für ewig eindrucksvoll und emotial, die Leistung der Schauspieler unvergesslich
I can only imagine sledgehammer blow in Judah's chest when he realized that he knew that man.....from so long ago....and under similar circumstances.....with a cup of water.....how did he not shriek in anguish when he recognized him....?
No words - just a slight shift in Charlton Heston’s facial expression as he looks into the prisoner’s eyes. And that says it all.
It’s amazing how this movie is still a spectacle and is still a great movie after all these years.
Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to

'You truly are the King of Kings'
Thats a good depiction, because its in Ben Hurs reaction. The reaction of a man to seeing Jesus eyes. This is why no one could come close to depicting Jesus correctly. The depth in his eyes just as a man, being Perfect, much less His spiritual depth. I would imagine it would be like looking toward the bottom of the ocean which cannot be visually penetrated, except in this case 'eyes of love', that cannot be fully fathomed, but leaving a definite emotional impression.
Hi David, what you say is so true but I think what happens is Ben Hur realises that this is the Man who gave him water when the chain-gang stopped and he was refused water by the Centurian.
:)
I like how Ben Hur gets the water from Jesus and then Ben Hur gives Jesus Christ his water for him I would have done the same Jesus died for me and I will die for him
No one could come close to depicting Jesus because Jesus never existed. There was no historical records of Jesus. Anything written about him was 32 years after his supposed death by people that never witnessed or interacted with Jesus.
chrisizme2....mmm, just like how MSM and government hide things from us today, huh? Who was the power there and then? Rome and the Jews. Rome wouldn't want it to be known, because it would hurt their power. The Jews because they rejected Jesus, because it would hurt their power. And yet there were Christians before those writings. Wonder why???
+chrisizme2 I have PhD in philosophy and ancient history and sadly you've just shown your total ignorance. Texts records and accounts from the time overwhelmingly support there was a man called Jesus who had following and was put to death under Rome. Pathetic ignorance.
One of my favorite movies. I even read the book
This film should be a lesson on how to depict religion within film. This scene neither embellishes nor glorifies the story of Christ yet it is immensely meaningful and powerful despite a complete lack of dialogue or facial expression. The Christian message is there for people who want to hear it, but not forced upon those who do not.
Well said Mr. Payton.
If its forced, its not being presented in the right way. If its presented, but ignored, and then bidded a fare adieu to, with no estrangement meant to leave you feeling guilty afterwords...then it presented in the "judge not, lest thee be judged" persona/correctly. Another one comes to mind..."Vengeance is mine" etc. Common sense can see thats also saying "Judgement is mine".
Those who come in with a judging tone adoring themselves as Gods right hand man, are not appreciated by any entity other than themselves and their ego. 'Physician heal thyself!' = (there is a huge difference between humbleness and judgementalness, no one is pre-Saved)
I am Christian to be honest, but don't see why my comment brought about such homophobic remarks.
Wheelmas Thomas, I have a couple of friends who are homosexual. You'd never even know they were unless you grew to know them. I remember finding out that one of them was gay after knowing him for over half a year. There are probably many reasons he didnt tell me; foremost being it's simply none of my business. I befriended him not for his sexual orientation; not for his religious beliefs but for his character and personality.
The christian message is the fundamentally the same messages almost all religions are founded on at their core, before interpretation and dogma are inflicted. And the message is one of love, peace, understanding and compassion.
Powerful scene. VERY POWERFUL

Agree.
This scene is moving and powerful as was the scene when Christ gives Ben Hur the water when he was dying of thirst. He showed him His mercy.
The Roman soldier was confused and didn’t understand the idea of mercy.
My favorite scene is when the Roman soldiers mock Jesus by placing a Crown of Thorns firmly on His head. His forehead starts to bleed from the thorns. And Christ is bleeding almost like he’s crying tears of blood. This moment always brings me to tears.
Oh, how they degraded and mocked Him. They laughed at Him and said Here’s your Crown! King of the Jews! Look at Him Now!
And He just took it all silently.
And He later said after His Crucifixion and before His death, Forgive them Lord! They know not what they do!
What they didn’t know was that He is the King of the World forever and ever!
