Is Islam Antisemitic?

- Though they share similar values, guidelines, and principles, Islam and Judaism have a long, complicated relationship that has led to tension recorded within the Quran and other Islamic texts. As a result of what’s been written, along with reactions to the longstanding Israel-Palestinian conflict, some have called Islam an inherently antisemitic religion. Those who agree point out that certain Quranic verses, when taken literally or interpreted negatively, foster antisemitic sentiments within education systems and in the culture, which are used to justify negative stereotypes or hostility towards Jews. Yet other religious scholars argue that this is not the case. They say that many Quranic references to Jews are typically misinterpreted and must be understood in their historical and textual contexts. They also emphasize that there have been historical periods and modern examples where Muslim-majority countries have hosted thriving Jewish communities and reflect a more accurate representation of Islamic attitudes towards Jews.
With this context, we debate the question: Is Islam Antisemitic?
Arguing Yes: Tim Dieppe, Head of Policy at Christian Concern
Arguing No: Reza Aslan, Iranian-American Religion Scholar; Bestselling Author of "Zealot"
Emmy award-winning journalist John Donvan moderates

I'm so relieved to hear that all the Koran can be interpreted individually. Could we let the muslims know?
Next time get an ex muslim for such debate. Reza turned it all about Christianity.
Yes I’m sure an ex Muslim is not biased at all
@@315pasha everybody is biased when a religion is concerned. Ex muslims, however, are highly knowledgeble about the subject. Many of them speak Arabic. These things a Christian non Arab researcher of religions does not have.
@@darita654 I don’t think they’re highly educated at all. I think they have a bone to pick because of traumatic event that happened to them that stems probably from their culture and not the religion. Also, it’s the best hustle in the world. Lots of money to be made from trashing Islam. Great industry. Ask Ayan Hirsi Ali. She doesn’t even speak Arabic, hasn’t read the Quran or Hadith in any detail. Yet she was able to get a lucrative book deal and position at the Hoover institute as the token neocon ex Muslim. So no this wouldn’t be an objective voice to turn to.
@@315pasha best hustle in the world? Really? Islam critics get killed quite often. There is one who lives in Germany. He is a son of imam and was preparing to become one himself. He wrote a book as well and now lives under constant police protection.
@@315pasha another point you make that bad things in Islam come from culture and not Islam itself. Unfortunately it is not true. Mohammed was an power hungry warlord who killed lots of people, had sex slaves and r*ped a 9 year old. If you follow his example alone, you would become quite evil. Besides Quran gives instructions how to treat slaves and beat wives.
is Reza Aslan an islamist? That question should have been asked first.
Okay calm down, Joe McCarthy.
Reza states that "It's up to the person to derive from it.." referring to text in the religious scriptures mentions both positive and negative statements about Jews. In Islam, it's never up to the person to decide how to translate Islamic scriptures. It's up to the governing bodies of Islamic texts - the Imams and such. Muslims mostly do not read nor understand Islamic texts because it's incredibly confusing and in old Arabic.
It's laughable to say religion is what any individual believer makes of it. Such a disingenuous point to make by a religious scholar. If that was the case it would be impossible to study orthodox theology of any religion.
It's also disingenuous to say no religion in the world affirms the equality of other religions, Buddhism is a prime example. The goal of Buddhism is the attainment of enlightenment and Buddhist texts clearly give examples of the possibility of individuals attaining enlightenment without the teachings of the Buddha.
Reza is either purposefully making disingenuous claims or is a terrible scholar...
Why not both?
#1 is kind of sort of true, but if you're going to make that claim (Reza) you have to also concede that to the extent an individual who calls themselves a follower of a given religion ignores or goes against the doctrines or rules of that religion is the exact extent to which they are not a member of that religion. At a certain point if a Buddhist is on a murderous rampage, drinks alcohol daily and doesn't meditate, doesn't even read the sutras, what do we make of their proclaiment that they are Buddhist?
I am wondering what Reza thinks about Quran mentioning children of Israel many times but never mentioned Palestinians, Quran also mentioned that children of Israel will return and what does he think about claims by some that JC is Palestinian.
He is bizarrely sidetracking by talking about Christian dislike of Jews but this is not the subject of the debate
@Petruhafication. Ironically that your bring up the comparison with Buddhism as Muhammad had horrible things to say about Buddhism, Hinduism and even Zoroastrians very similar to what he’d said of Jews and Christians calling for the murders of all others. In fact he’d only extended some tolerance to Christians and Jews because they were Abrahamic religions and therefore keepers of the holy testaments. Each could only be tolerated if they paid extra taxes when living in Muslim countries higher than the tax rates over that of Muslim citizens upon pain of death if they objected or simply couldn’t afford to pay when living under Sharia Law. I can’t think of a more intolerant religion. Who else hates the Buddhist or for that matter who hates the Zoroastrians? It’s so unreasonable.
Reza started with a whataboutism and it derailed most of the debate. He then went on to pretend that the Quranic text is abstract and has multiple meanings depending on the reader, he never really responded to Tim's quoted verses from the Quran which very clearly harbour animosity and hostility towards the Jews.
"If Islam is anti-Semitic then so is Christianity" is not a strong argument to the modern secular audience. The failings of Organized Religion are a big reason why the west believes in the separation of church and state.
The literally started Christianity. They didn't preach hatred against their brothers but forgiveness and love. 😊
What about the Zionists from Eastern Europe who are claiming to be semites using the Bible as a title deed to justify the occupation of Palestine?
Are they secular when they are using religion to do the occupation?
Yes Christianity has been brow beaten into modernity. That said, if any random person wants to live their life more like Jesus, we have no reason to worry about them. On the other hand, if they wanted to live like a warlord who had many wives, including some underage, we have a problem. at 28.38, reza being ignorant or dishonest. the holocause had nothing to do with Christianity. hitler was obsessed with arian racial purity and adopted US eugenics concepts to begin exterminating people who were considered inferior. this then later included the jews. hitler also begin a new state religion that excluded old testament and relabelled Jesus as an Aryan. hitler also hated the Catholics next in line after the jews. it didn't matter if a jew was Christian, they were marked for concentration camps if they had a certain % of parentage who were jews. One story i read recently is that of Edith Stein, who was jewish and became an serious academic and then became a nun. She was sent to gas chambers in spite of efforts by the church to foil the Nazis. the point is, this is real genocide - didn't matter she became christian.
What's more, Hitler did not originally intend to kill all the Jews but to enslave and work them to death gradually. Hajj Amin Al Husseini, uncle of Arafat and Grand Mufti of Jerusalem under the Ottoman Empire, met wtih Hitler to convince him to annihilate the entire Jewish people -- as per the Koran, of course -- but also because Husseini was afraid that any escaping Jews would head home to Jerusalem and become Husseini's problem to deal with. Zionism had already become a rallying cry before Hitler, around 1890, and Husseini must have been aware.

@fre7717. When studying the Torah if a rabbinical scholar professed a crazy theory there were a hundred other rabbinical scholars who objected and denounced that theory generally and the same thing happened within the Vatican and in the different Christian churches over the centuries. That’s how progress happened over time however slowly. By contrast in Islam it’s as though if Mohammad said that Islams should hate a group of people in one of the books yet to forgive them in another the Imans side on the the book of the Suras. You simply can’t say I hate you a thousand times but I forgive you only once and consider that to be a healthy relationship.
Kudos and thanks to Tim Dieppe for his (mathematically) objective, logical, and clear evidence of Islam's antisemitism. There was no word for antisemitism when the Koran was written, but the text reiterates permanent antisemitism into the forever future far more times than it hints at some sort of salvation for Jews who convert to Islam. If someone says, "I hate you" 99 times and "I love you" only once, the two statements are not in balance. To suggest, as Rezs Aslan does, that they are, that they cancel each other out and leave everything to individual interpretation, is a perfect example of false equivalence.
Indeed, Reza Aslan ignores the Koran in order to blame individuals of antisemitism, in order to protect and defend Islam, yet, by doing so, he negates any value that the Koran and Islam have, because, by R.A.'s own explanation, everything is up to individual interpretation.
R.A.'s comparisons with Christianity amount to the immature defense, "I know you are, but what am i?" HIs vague fluidity of reasoning amounts to the manipulations of propaganda, spoken in such a way as to gaslight the individual listener.
So, again, I say kudos and thanks to Tim Dieppe for being the adult and the honest person in the room.

Our sages disciplined us to bear Ishmael’s lies and absurdities, listening in silence, and we have trained ourselves, old and young, to endure their humiliation, as Isaiah said, ‘I have given my back to the smiters, and my cheek to the beard pullers.’”
If a religion appropriates another faith , it's inherently anti- that faith. islam in Quran appropriates all older abrahmic religions
Islam plagiarized bits from Abrahamic (among others) religions' scriptures to trick/make people believe it's from their God (god/s) and turned it on it's head (also tried to re-write history) to suit their end goal of world domination ( the aim to create an empire and dominate as the Romans did)
I'm surprised it took that long. I can even fit in a short:
Is Islam antisemitic? Yes! Want more info about it? Read the Quran or hadiths about the topic. Or just hit up Tafsir Ibn Kathir.
Simple answer, Yes.
So let's not be credulous enough to just except any and all religious claims.
Short answer, YES!
The note by Maimonides shows the plight of the Jews under the Moslems.
Maimonides, a prominent Jewish philosopher and scholar, did not necessarily depict the plight of Jews under Muslims in a singular or universally negative light. While historical circumstances varied, Maimonides himself lived during the Islamic Golden Age in the 12th century, primarily in Muslim-ruled Spain and Egypt, where Jews often experienced periods of relative tolerance and intellectual flourishing under Islamic rule. Maimonides' writings, such as his legal and philosophical works, reflect his engagement with Islamic culture and philosophy, and he often expressed gratitude for the opportunities and protections afforded to Jews in Muslim societies compared to their counterparts in Christian Europe at the time. Antisemitism has always been a European malady; a crime of the West. Get your facts straight.

I don't think he's confused, I think he seeks to cause confusion as part of his apologetics.
Aslan Reza begins by excusing written religious texts. All texts are somewhat a product of their time. The Hebrew Bible is from thousands of years ago, the Christian New Testament is from a few thousand years ago, but the uran is from only about one thousand years ago, and thus is closer to what current Muslim believers believe. More important: people tend to grab negative views of The Other despite a few non-negative views in the same text. What I hear in this debate about Islam is that Islam believes those who come to "the end of time" as believers in the Muslim view of God (Allah) will be accepted at "the end of time." Our concern for humans is for the here and now.
Religious texts are a product of the time when they are written. The Hebrew Bible was written thousands of years ago, the Christian New Testament about a thousand years ago, but the Quran is only hundreds of years ago and is more fully believed as written. People also tend to believe negative views more fully than occasional more positive views that may occur within a text. As some other comments here observe: tell these "love everyone" verses to the current Muslims. Most of the more ositive comments in Islam refer to "the end of time." We are concerned with how people are viewed and treated hre and now.

Where was Palestine? Did some of the Evangelists mention Palestine in the Gospel? Did Josephus write his book about the war of Palestinian Jews? Did Pilishtim aka Philistines still exist at that time? Samaritans? Yes, Philistines? No. Hadrian, the Roman emperor renamed Judea into Palestina and Jerusalem into Aelia Capitolina after he defeated the Jews more than 100 years later after the death of Jesus. According to the Gospel Jesus wasn't a kohen, but whether he was a rabbi, a prophet, or the son of God he was highly likely literate.
@yuribliman8999. For any Jews to have believed that Jesus was the Messiah he’d have had to havre been a descendant of David therefore he would have been a Levite. The. A Muslims under Shira law can't openly have an opinion on their interpretation, they can't choose not to follow or leave Islam. To say Islam doesn't breed violence and hatred of Jews is crap. The Quran goes on and on about non believers, between calling them losers, animals, accusations of corruption, punishment, subjugation, forever hellfire... All religions have a dark history with disturbing text but Islam is the only one that's never evolved to a point of allowing basic human rights.

At last Islam is being talked about and critically analysed in millions of houses across the world. The internet is the silver bullet for exposing the darkness and the endless contradictions in the Islamic scriptures. How can the 'prophet' Muhammed be considered the "perfect example" for humans for all time? #Sunnah

surah 33/26 , and those of the people of the scripture , who backed them ( christians ) , Allah brought them down from their forts ( houses ) and cast terror into their hearts ( suffering ) , a group you killed and a group you made captives ...............
this has been happening today , today , today .................
The genocide the israel is committing is written in the Bible I guess
Absolutely.
34:55 peaceful verses were abrogated by the later violent verses…allah kept changing his mind or whatever suited mohammed at that time.

Yes most definitely yes!
I reject the very premise of the question, which stokes hatred by making the colonizing aggressor look like the victim and uses religion as both a weapon and a shield
Worse than the question under debate, is that Islam inherently devalues ALL beautiful human life, this conclusion based on questions I have put to adherents of Islam.

Gosh , this topic isn’t even worth debating. It’s the answer is so obviously yes Islam is anti-Semitic this there’s nothing to prove here. There’s nothing to debate that the whole debate is a straw man. Yes Islam is definitely antisemitic and anyone who says otherwise is gaslighting.

Well i see the point of the defender
But i also see outcome of regulated manipulations
Islam by default is unti anything not islam
Jeudaism is the same ..
But
As you mentioned
Islam is 1 billion people
Jewdaism is approximately 15 milion
Its 100 times bigger
So same level of defined statistics
2-4% of jews are utra aggressive religious people
Its about .. 100000 people
While 2-4% of islamic people is … 10000000 people
Its more then israelies all together
Thats about it
The rest are mostly secular on both sides
So yes
Evaluating the jews islamofobia
Is very based
And real existential threat
Also europ
Is also split
2-6% support annihilation of jews even today
And those are about 30000000 people that are radical
So
Even considering the entire world
Jew haters are 40000000 - 120000000
Radical world wide
And its undervaluation by far
In such conditions
The bare existence of jews is an endless survival
And a choice
Be a slave
(Gimny or something)
Or fight with all they got
To maintain a society
are bible anti semetic?
Anti semitic by defenition is “Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”
So bible didn't incite hate to jewish people.

His blood is the saving blood of Christ. Jesus was a jew so it cant be because of being jewish.
So disingenuous.
Muhammad at first thought that the Jews would adopt his new religion. This is why he started with prayer towards Jerusalem, in an attempt to attract new converts. When the Jews rejected his teachings saying he’s just copy and pasting their own religion, he turned violent against them. From there on it was absolutely force conversion, and Jerusalem was no longer a holy place - only Mecca and Madina were.
Muhammad didn’t “marry” Jewish women or “encourage” his followers to intermarry with Jews. He took Jewish women from Jewish tribes he conquered and turned them into you know what but I won’t say it so YT doesn’t delete this post. Other wives of Jewish descent were converts to Islam.
Jews are commanded to reject false prophets.
Moses is mentioned in the Quran 136 times, Jesus 25 times, and Prophet Muhammad 4 times. Abraham (Ibrahim) is mentioned 69 times. They hold the highest status of prophethood. The children of Israel (Jews) are revered by God so much that He sent them hundreds of prophets. God pleads with them to turn back to the truth because He has such affinity for the children of Israel.

God pleads with them to turn back to the truth because He has such affinity for the children of Israel. I'm still confused. How is Islam anti-Semitic? Ninety-nine percent of Muslim prophets are Jews, except for one or two. You would have to be very ignorant to think otherwise. The issues are political; Muslims didn't create the situation, some Jews did. The irony is that the Quran lays out that they would do this to the Muslims.
All prophet was jews but Muhammad is not jew. Just prove to us one is off
@@askywa I don’t know how Europeans co-opted these two Middle Eastern religions. Islam, as the third update from one God, shares the lineage of Abraham’s sons, Isaac and Ishmael-they are practically brothers. Islam is semetic by ancestry. Both curcumcise and come from an Abrahamic sources. They are more similar to eachother than they are to Europeans.
Arabs existed before Abraham. You no prove that Mohammed came from Abraham since not all Arabs decend from Abraham.
Islam doesn't come from an Abrahamic source. Muhammad's family were pagans. He knew so little about Judaism that they were able to trick him into adding a children's story and parts of the Talmud to his Quran.
