i grew up in All India Radio (AIR, Cuttack) age.....remember those days in 1970s when it was only means of entertainment. It was also a time of pure sangeet and highly qualified artists that found place in radio programs. Odishi, champu, chokhi along with bhajans etc used to be presented by artists whose voice still rings in the air of Odisha......Odia bhasha o sangeet degenerated after mid 1980s....never recovered after that....we are only left with a sad feeling of loss...... Where is this Odia singer and what happened to Akashwani Cuttack?

This song/poem was written by the Odia poet Banamali some 200-250 years ago. Radha, the daughter of king Vrishabhanu, a married woman, has gone to the river Yamuna to fetch water. But on the way to the river, Krishna, with whom she has reluctantly fallen in love, blocks her path. So she warns him of the dire consequences that would follow were the two to be discovered thus. She dissuades him from continuing with this affair any further.
Translation of the song:
_"Step aside from my way, you cunning man._
_I'm going to the river Jamuna (= Yamuna) to fetch water._
_In case you hinder me further,_
_I'm pledging the jewellery of my head as a proof of my love._
_Back home, my sister-in-law is a great headache_
_And my mother-in-law acts as if she were my co-wife (i.e. she torments me much)._
_O lifter of the [Govardhana] mountain, do not call me anymore._
_No longer shall I heed your calls._
_I'm the princess of the king Brusabhanu (= Vrishabhanu)._
_Do you think that I am like the other ordinary girls/women_
_That you hold the end of my saree and trouble me thus?_
_Don't you feel afraid of the fact that I'm someone else's bride?_
_The next time I come to fetch water, no longer shall I come alone._
_I shall bring my friends with me._
_Says Banamali (the poet), "listen o goddess (= Radha)._
_Please do not disappoint the holder of the flute (= Krishna)."_
