Xavier said he was spooked the first time by the sun's reflection on a puddle over the rail. From that agitated state he was then spooked by the shadow of the grandstand coming up. Easy to see that he veered hard right to avoid what he perceived was something that needed avoiding. ;) Special training on his menu now.
WOW!!! That was CRAZY!!! What a great jockey that he managed to stay on even with his feet out of the irons, and he got the horse back in the race twice!! And managed to finish incredibly well! This is definitely a must see video!
They shoulda put the xman up for the win with a ride like that , that was awesome without irons and all, someone should give him a derby mount or a preakness mount that was so awesome xman you RULE!!!!!
The first time he bolted was approaching a shrub outside the turf course's outer rail, then he bolted again approaching large shadows of the grandstand that were on the track. This was Spicer Cub's first start at Pimlico and he probably just wasn't used to the surroundings. Horses spook sometimes, thankfully he didn't cause a spill and no one got hurt.
That was some impressive riding there, X. You and the horse were not injured, amazingly. This, and the drunk who ran out on the track to slap Jorge Chavez's leg in the home stretch. It's always a weird day at Pimlico.
That was hilarious! Spicer was like "meh forget this race, I am going home" Then hes all like "maaaaayyybbbeee I will finish it" and then goes on to get second.........Great jockey for getting him back on track though...........
the only thing I saw close is Sir Bear at Calder in 05' I believe. he bolted at far turn and ran along outside rails at the turn, came back to win. crazy. I hoping youtube has a video of that one.
Ironically enough the horse that won (although clearly not the best) was trained by Richard Small who trained Broad Brush. For those of us old enough to remember that amazing horse, can't forget his PA Derby when he bolted to the outside on the turn, was then well behind and somehow got up to win the race. This reminded me so much of BB, it was hilarious. How much the best was Spicer Cub though to toss in all those antics and only get nosed out? Ha! Great job by the jockey. Amazing race!
Don't know what caused the first bolt, but the second one was a spook at the starting gate shadow. If he gets his head together, he is by far the best on this day.
At least once a year, a horse gets spooked by the shadow of the gate parked there. Might I suggest a little re-development so that there's a section of removable inside rail and a parking spot into which the gate can be rolled into after the start?
Spicer Cub, amazing horse, Forrest Gump? Just had to follow what the jock asked. LOVE Spicer Cub !!! By hook or by crook, placed in the race! Miracle, yes. No injuries, check. :)
Xavier Perez is one skilled rider... to be able to first of all not freak out and bail, but then to hang on and emerge from between the rail and the gate with a chance and then go for it... the kid's got balloon-sized balls of steel.
If you read the chart of the race you will see the comment "closed determinedly under game urging". Note that the chart is calling Xavier Perez's effort game, not Spicer Cub's! Never seen that in a chart either.
Whirlaway reputedly did something similar as a 2yo at Saratoga. He's supposed to have led a race down the backstretch but at the turn kept going to the outside rail, ran along that until the stretch, then won the race.
I dont know what happened on the turn but obviously that big starting gate shadow spooked him so he went around the gate and back into the light to finish his incredible adventure to lose by a nose!!--wow!!!
Pimlico 04/13/13 Race 1 - 4 views. Race 11 - 13K views. Totally worth it. Hilarious ride for "The X Man." Thankfully it was hilarious and not tragic. Could have ended badly, but everybody's ok. :)
How does a horse bolt twice, literally take a right turn in the stretch, go around the starting gate, lose his irons, and come within a nose of winning a race? Never saw anything like it.
good luck getting a 1,200 pound animal to do something that it has truly made up it's mind not to do. this one just spooked at some shadows. it happens.
Kudos to Xavier Perez! He earned every penny of his jockmount. LOL Charlotte TB racehorses don't always do what they are asked. They're funny like that.
Hey, are you serious Charlotte? FYI, trainer Mary Eppler is a terrific trainer and she would NEVER race a horse that wasn't in top condition. What I think is sad is that you actually think that humans can detect when a horse doesn't want to run. Also, because you most likely don't know much about thoroughbred horse racing - racing situations that come up like these are never expected. The likelihood of this ever happening again is slim.
Wow! Perez was unbelievable and Spicer Cub can run his butt off! So glad no one was hurt. The race caller was also terrific.

Amazing. Still accelerating when he passed the finish line.
Credit goes to the jockey for riding and not only worrying about his life! Incredible.
Holy hell that was crazy!!!!! Way to go Xavier!!!
I would love to see the Trakus replay of this.
They shoulda put the xman up for the win with a ride like that , that was awesome without irons and all, someone should give him a derby mount or a preakness mount that was so awesome xman you RULE!!!!!
What a ride! And still came in 2nd - Wow!
I've never seen anything like that, either. That horse had a mind of his own!

All horses are safe! That's very important and happy!
This rider has more balls than anyone I've ever seen.Broad Brush tried to do the same thing in the Pennsylvania Derby.
That was hilarious! Spicer was like "meh forget this race, I am going home" Then hes all like "maaaaayyybbbeee I will finish it" and then goes on to get second.........Great jockey for getting him back on track though...........

Extreme talent goes in pair with craziness. this seems true for animals as well... :)
If the horse didn't want to race, he wouldn't run. You cannot tell a thousand-pound colt what to do.

wow. my praise to the jockey staying on Spicer Cub. that horse did NOT want to cooperate today

I'd rather see the horse get roughed up a bit than allowed to think that almost running his rider into the starting gate was a fun little adventure.
THE ANNOUNCER MADE THIS RACE
Crazy!!!
so who won?
had to watch this again....DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES! as the announcer proclaims...love this race and this jockey and this athlete of a horse!!!
If you read the chart of the race you will see the comment "closed determinedly under game urging". Note that the chart is calling Xavier Perez's effort game, not Spicer Cub's! Never seen that in a chart either.
So, did Spicer Cub end up winning?

to quote John Davidson.."That's incredible"

This is like something out of a Disney movie or a Looney Tunes cartoon
Wild, wild ride .. if that doesn't get a jock's heart racing nothing will!
"There's nothing wrong with a straight line, Chet"
--The Santa Clause 2
Looks like he spooked twice... craziest thing I've ever seen
Good!
Amazing nobody was hurt.
the commenter saying .. and that was a wow ride . like that part
Claim him! Claim him!
Do you speak horse? Interesting oberservation because the horse kept running, and didnt stop.
Spicer Cub must have lost 15-20 lengths bolting - and still gets in the win shot... that could have been tragic!
This horse can obviously run. If not he might make an awesome dressage horse with a galloping side pass like that!
How does a horse bolt twice, literally take a right turn in the stretch, go around the starting gate, lose his irons, and come within a nose of winning a race? Never saw anything like it.
PETA member, right? You kind of fit the profile.
Now....THAT'S A ROUGH TRIP!!!! The jockey should get hazardous duty pay.
LEGS OF STEEL.
If he did not want to race, I don't think he would have come within a nose of winning under these circumstances.
Sipcer Cub don't live by nobody's rules
I never saw a horse run sideways like that.Looked like he was doing dressage.Couldn't believe he nearly won that race.
I wish people would not comment on a subject when they clearly do not know what they are talking about. That is sad.
SPICER CUB never wanted to jump on the shadows
Shame this was not an English race as I would have loved to have seen the in-running prices!
Spicer Cub thought it was competing in the Slalom
JuanWinner!!!!
Some do, some do not......
Janice Blake that not a way to talk about me........
Didn't like the way the jockey was belting him on the second shy across the track. That would have been a 4 day ban in the UK for overuse of the whip.
I highly doubt that. It was a swift correction by the jockey.
If this horse had some proper training , he could be the next [ lava man ].
drug test that horse.
Test for performance enhancing drugs, then test for cocaine
Juan Wienerr lol!
I'm with you tracy, Charlotte doesn't have a clue what she's talking about.
Someone will be on the stewards' list......
good luck getting a 1,200 pound animal to do something that it has truly made up it's mind not to do. this one just spooked at some shadows. it happens.
See 2012 hanshin daishoten Orfevle
Janice Blake that wasn't a nice thing to say, as a fellow jock u have no rights to say any dumb comment like that!
Kudos to Xavier Perez! He earned every penny of his jockmount. LOL Charlotte TB racehorses don't always do what they are asked. They're funny like that.
Spicer cup still doesn't give a shit. hahahhahah!
Sure he could.....how about you volunteer??
Oh I forget the only thing u can do rigth is write book.....cuz ride horses don't work out for u!!

I wish people wouldn't open their computers to type on topics they know nothing about. That is sad.
Ca-val-ry, not Cal-va-ry. Read the Bible. There was no Calvary raid.
No fare..... this horse went a 1 mile and 3/16, and the rest .... a mile and 1/16th
I wish horses did not have to race when they clearly do not want to race. That is sad.
