I'm very overweight (currently 280), a heel-to-mid-foot striker, run only on the sidewalk. Most On shoes I've tried for my feet are pretty crap, but the Cloudmonster is thus far the best daily running shoe I've ever had. No break-in time, nice lockdown for my foot, no more heel pain, no more occasional swollen ankle, my legs feel a bit more fresh, plus the speed board/rocker design makes a difference. The shoes are marketed as "monster cushioning" but I'm getting an oddly firm-ish ride but super soft landings on the concrete with no "bottoming put". I tried the New Balance 1080 v12 and my heel kept occasionally sinking to the ground, destroying my heels. Basically everything else is just as you said Zach.
Former elite + long-time run-specialty outfitter here. Love that someone from the Med realm is entering the RUclips shoe conversation! Just some vocab thoughts for you moving forward - "Supershoes" and "Plush Rides" are two separate categories. Supershoes are typically a race-specific shoe with a Carbon Fiber plate + Pebax (or similar) foam. Think Vapor/AlphaFly, Endorphin Pro, Asics Metaspeed, Adios Pro, Hyperion Elite, etc. "Plush" rides are typically meant for long, slow miles to keep you healthy. Brooks Glycerin, Saucony Triumph, Hoka Clifton/Bondi, etc. The Cloudmonster is certainly closer than On has ever come to the "plush" category, but for the most part they have focused on the more responsive daily trainer realm, that is firmer than everything aforementioned - think Saucony Ride, Brooks Launch, Hoka Rincon, etc! The cloudmonster is a shoe meant to run long, not necessarily fast. It's made with a very standard EVA that is pretty heavy if we're comparing them to "run-fast" shoes. They have the EchoBoom as their "Super" Shoe.
I decided to buy this shoe after viewing at sooooooo many reviews to find the best running shoe for moderate running. I’m not a racer or anything but I do daily running up hills, and on the roads for the most part.I have flat feet that probate pretty bad. These aren’t support shoes but rather performance. They’re super comfy! This was a good investment!!! The shoe does what it suppose to do!! I ran faster and longer without fatigue. I was able to run up this steep hill far more easier on my monster on clouds versus my basic on clouds. The shoe has energy return throughout the entire sole. It’s pretty cool. I was very excited about it. My heart rate wasn’t so high either! I get great. No back pain. I will be buying a new pot once I wear these out. I’ll be back to two you how durable they are. I love my shoes! And they’re pretty stylish as well. The casted me $170
I run I’m older and I have had all brands of high end running shoes and the cloud monster has allowed me to come back strong with no aches no pain no sprains! I will push this shoe to anyone wanting run longer with no shin pain or other
I've had these for a few months. Very comfortable. I normally run in 8.5, but the store only had 9, so mine are roomy even with an orthotic. I'm only training in them (up to 10K distance). I discovered my feet got tired during a 10-mile race - possible due to these being slightly too big. Still great shoes. 😃👍
Yes, your feet will get tired because there are huge holes in the sole to absorb energy... vs returning it. The sole has poor engineering for a top-model running shoe... I wouldn't run more than a half mile in these things. Imagine running on wet sand vs firm grass. For folks who maintain a reasonably quick pace (sub 7min) I think a carbon fiber plate w a reasonably engineered sole will take you much further.
I’ve got this shoe in the purple color. I also put about 600 miles in the Cloudstratus V2 before those cloud elements kind of lost their ability to maintain cushioning which resulted in me feeling that speedboard and making the shoe uncomfortable to run in. I really loved the Cloudstratus V2, and the Cloud Monster is very similar in fit and feel. But the Cloud Monster is lighter, it has better midsole cushioning, and the upper feels even lighter and more breathable. One nice thing about these shoes for me is that I could wear them with or without socks, and without really having to worry about how tightly I laced them up, and I never had blisters or discomfort or soreness of any kind (at least until the Cloudstratus v2 had over 500 or 600 miles on them.)
I really wanted the purple color but my size was out- yeah I noticed too with previous On’s you can tell exactly when the midsole starts giving - will be interesting to see how these do over the long haul
@@FootDoctorZach Yeah, if these shoes don’t last very long then I probably will be reticent to buy more at $170 each. My Cloudstratus V2 held up ok outside of the cloud elements starting to lose their cushioning ability after 500 miles. I can still wear them to walk around in.
@@iakona23 how did you feel the fit compared to the Stratus? Mine are finally bottoming out since I wear them 24/7 (on my feet all day but nor running) I really loved that roomy toebox because I have a *mildly* wide forefoot and long toes so it's hard to find the right combination of length/width while still keeping my heel and arch where they need to be. I am jonsing for a pair of these but I doubt I'll find any local to try on.
@@soylencer The upper on the Cloud Monster kind of lacks structure and my toes get scrunched together because the toe box is not as roomy as the Cloudstratus. Maybe I could solve that problem by going up half a size. I would not recommend Cloud Monster personally because I think there are better shoes out there with better longevity.
@@iakona23 thanks for the reply! It's so hard for me to find shoes which fit correctly that honestly the longevity is kind of secondary. I genuinely tried on 30 or 40 pairs of others over the course of a week before I tried on the Stratus which fit great. I spent my whole life overweight and wearing $30 Walmart sneakers while standing/squatting for work. My weight isn't an issue anymore but the damage is done. So I splurge on fit and comfort now. The Stratus were the best shoe I've ever worn, though I need to admit I don't run in them. I have a pair of CloudRock that I'm also generally satisfied with although they've not been on the trail more than twice. Those also had a nice roomy toebox. Anyway, while the fact that they lock cool as heck makes Clouds my first stop now, the fact that they seem to fit keeps me around.

More than I would expect after 3 weeks almost daily use. The laces kinda' suck. Hard to get a good lock down without putting pressure on the top of my feet. Would much rather have conventional pattern with grommeted eyelets. The tongue NEEDS padding, at least at the top. Still, I am glad I bought them. Cheers, Everyone

I am a big fan of the ON casual shoe - the ON Cloud. I must have 6-7 pairs now. Great shoe for walking and kicking around. Curious to know how the high performance ON shoes compare with something like a HOKA max cushion shoe and what models in the HOKA line might compare to the CLOUDMONSTER. I have pretty flat feet, so I wear the HOKA ARAHI for the stability and cushioning. How would these match up with those Doc?
@@FootDoctorZach On Cloud 5 are the greatest walk around shoes around imo. I own the ON Cloud 5 Push and they are awesome. They are by far their best selling shoe and for good reason.
Thanks for the review doc! I am planning to buy my first pair of on running shoes but I just haven't seen any in-depth reviews than your take on this one.. Now at least I know which model to pick up👍
Excelente reseña. Tengo unos on 5 y acabo de comprar los cloudmonster, por ser corredor de pisada media y un poco de malestar en la bola del talon. Creo que fue una excelente compra
Love your videos! i'm stuck deciding between this shoe and HOKA Clifton 9 for work. I work in a warehouse for 11 hours a day. Walking an average of 5 miles on concrete, lifting, bending, squatting, etc. so i need a durable, somewhat flexible, and very supportive shoe and breathability would be preferred. suggestions??
I buy a new pair of shoes every 6-weeks and have been getting the Hoka’s all last year and I rotated in these CloudMonster shoes and they both have some things I like about both but might be going back to my Hoka’s. The CloudMonster was a little bit disappointing in the wet and was a little more noisy vs the Hoka’s.
Just got these last week and have put about 20 miles on them, including one max effort 5k, a long slow run and a 5 mile zone 2 run. I've worn Hoka Clifton 8s for about a year now. I noticed a significant performance increase immediately and PR'd in the 5k. However, I am noticing some ankle pain and a plantar fasciitis flare-up. I'm a heavier runner (240 pounds), and a midfoot striker who primarily runs on asphalt or concrete. I will try them with custom insoles and phase them in slowly. Maybe that'll fix the issue. If not, they'll function as a race shoe and maybe a speed work shoe but not an everyday trainer. It's a little bit alarming that I'm already getting niggles after such a low volume.
It’s the plate right under foot- they really need an orthotic or something to make them comfortable for heavier strikes- some don’t mind it, some get snake bites with them
5:07 this doesn’t necessarily mean the shoe is giving you consistently lower heart rate at same time and pace of running vs the new balances. The most probable cause of this is probably due to your V02 max slightly increasing. Especially since you had been running with the new balances prior to owning the cloudmonsters. You gave your body time to adapt to better oxygen efficiency and storage by the time you did the test with the QC’s. Again, this is just my educated hypothesis. Now if you waited to do this test at the same time with both shoes then just disregard everything i previously stated. Really cool to see you test and mention it though
Great review, I have the Cloudflyer and Cloudace but find them to hard. Especially for my metatarsal as your foot is on the hard plastic plate under the insoles. Is it better in the Cloudmonster?
It’s better but not “plush” - still plastic under there but the rocker helps a lot - some love it some hate it - I personally thought it felt awesome under the Mets
Any suggestions on an On Cloud model for chronic back pain? It’s time for me (60YO female, small frame and build with high arch) to have a decent daytime walk around shoe. I’m considering Cloudrunner, On Cloud 5 or Cloudmonster. Would love to know your thoughts. TY!
Could you do the Cloud Neo Nexus just because its the first 100% recyclable shoe and a monthly payment for your shoes as a service so you send them back after 6 months and if you want to continue the subscription you just get a new pair made from components from the old pairs that have been broken down and is 100% circularity meaning you re-use every piece of the previous shoe. I just ran in them and the springboard and the light weight was incredible. Nothing about them felt 100% recyclable. They could revolutionize the shoe industry.
I've got about 300km on my pair of these (colour same as video) and I'm really enjoying them. My only complaint is the lacing, which I'm definitely not a huge fan of.
Hi foot Doctor zack you make amazing videos and best reviews of shoes. I want ask you . What shoes with best cushion and support recommend me for a use daily i have knee paint
The reason for knee pain, is many times heel landing. Killing for your knees. Cushioning will not solve this, but make it worse. More cushioning will make you land harder! Try to transit to forefoot or midfoot landing.
Great review Zach! I am middle aged, have some pronation and occasional knee pains. Are these stability shoes or at least provides stability to help in pronation and knee issues compared to other shoes in On cloud ? I like comfortable/cushy ride, thought this can tick most of the boxes, please let me know and keep the reviews coming!
They have alot of energy return but stability isn’t their biggest strong suit - the heel counter is shallow and thin plus the profile is more streamlined f
Great review. I have been running in the Cloudmonster and am impressed. I have battled some metatarsalgia on my left foot for a bit and these seem to work well in not irritating it. Any suggestions on marathon racing shoes with this condition?
I bought this exact pair two weeks ago. The most comfortable shoe I've ever run in. I have quite a high arch and mid striker and they feel awesome on the road. At first I found the bounce a little strange as if my energy was overly up / down rather than forwards, but after one or two more runs it feels a lot better. Would recommend.
Hey! So I have a friend who's a doctor of physical therapy and I asked him what he thought about the use of plates in shoes and if that is disruptive to strengthening and maintenance of strength of tissues and joints in the foot and up the chain of various joints. He said he didn't feel that it would really be an issue for most people. What do you think as someone who is more specialized on foot helath?
Yeah i mean unless you wear them 24/7 from the time of birth I dont see an issue. We spend a lot of time barefoot as it is and the human foot was never meant to run on asphalt so i dont see issues aside from if the plate is too stiff and close to your foot with no give you could get heel pain but thats about it
Good shoes aren’t about what “feels” comfortable. It’s about support to your foot bones. Ask a podiatrist. Most shoes that have a sole that bends in half easily don’t offer the bone support your metatarsals, arch, ankle and other bones need (brands like Nike) so cheap to make , it’s all marketing. That’s why Asics and New Balance are still a top recommendation in the podiatrist community.
Zach would you reccomended these for older men who are still on their feet all day working? My grandfather had A pair from the brand but I think it’s time for a serious upgrade
I’m constantly on my feet while at work and always feeling walking 3.5 afterwork so I am looking for comfortable shoe and the cloud monster is looking like a really good shoe. Any recommendations
That’s great looking shoe. But how was the supporting for the arch? I m a 6 ft 85 k flat foot guy. Do you suggest I get this shoe for small run / casual wear?
Just found your page. Excitedly I was curious about your take on New Balance Rebel V2 (my absolute favorite) the V3 will be coming out soon along with their Supercomp pacer line. I would love to see your opinion on these!
Great review. I have the cloudflow. Amazing looking but for whatever reason , I get plantar fasciitis within a day or two of wearing them. So they sit in my shoe closet unused.
have you done any videos talking about advantages or disadvantages of shoes that try to simulate a barefoot experience like vibram fivefingers or vivo barefoot? being a foot doctor i feel like you would have a more nuanced take than most people regarding that
Ive done all the research on it but havent put it together in a video--its not black and white fore sure and some of the papers people have put out are so bad that its hard to comb through whats decent science and whats just opinion/ dunning-krueger
Problem is, that many people who tried barefoot running and are negative about it, didn't transit properly. Barefoot running is the best thing for your body, you will have the best natural spring and cushioning, but there is a huge but. You need to spend almost a year to strengthen your feet, enkels and calves and learn the technique. If you do all of that, it is the best of running you can do, but it is not something you can try and give your opinion. Many "studies" came from non barefoot runners and they just don't know. With all the respect to the shoe doctor, but with a heel strike like that, for sure he will injured himself trying barefoot running. The answer of how to run with the less amount of injuries and most effective is quite simple. Just run like a human is created. So no support, cushioning, high heels or whatever, but it takes a lot of effort and many people just don't want to spend time in this. Good luck and enjoy your running!
I know it was an older video, but does the Trae young 1 break in on the side? I usually wear a 10.5, but I had a little bit of heel slip when I tried that on. The 10 felt more secure, but it pinched my pinky toe a bit. Does that area break in, or should I just go with the 10.5?

Curious to know how the high performance ON shoes compare with something like a HOKA max cushion shoe and what models in the HOKA line might compare to the CLOUDMONSTER. I have pretty flat feet, so I wear the HOKA ARAHI for the stability and cushioning. How would these match up with those Doc?
Haven’t tried them
@@FootDoctorZach From my reading online today, seems like the HOKA Arahi is most like the ON Cloudstratus - a cushioned stability shoe.
@@FootDoctorZach On Cloud 5 are the greatest walk around shoes around imo. I own the ON Cloud 5 Push and they are awesome. You can either use slip on elastic style or they come with normal laces and extra holes for a more snug fit. I believe they also come in wide now. They are by far their best selling shoe and for good reason.
just don't size up use your regular shoe size, if you plan on using them like they were intended with the elastic cord
Thanks for the review doc! I am planning to buy my first pair of on running shoes but I just haven't seen any in-depth reviews than your take on this one.. Now at least I know which model to pick up👍
Nice!
I'm not a big runner but I walk for miles daily. Would this be good for that as well?
Phenomenal breakdown and video man. Good going 👍
Excelente reseña. Tengo unos on 5 y acabo de comprar los cloudmonster, por ser corredor de pisada media y un poco de malestar en la bola del talon. Creo que fue una excelente compra
you should look at Ian's Secure Knot.
there is no lace made yet that can undo that knot
Love your videos! i'm stuck deciding between this shoe and HOKA Clifton 9 for work. I work in a warehouse for 11 hours a day. Walking an average of 5 miles on concrete, lifting, bending, squatting, etc. so i need a durable, somewhat flexible, and very supportive shoe and breathability would be preferred. suggestions??
i also have peroneal tendinitis
Legend has it there's a Swiss design engineer still weeping after seeing the shoe cut in half.
Would these be good for jump roping ?
Premier top tier review. This is where you need to come if your considering a specific shoe.
Thanks!
I've been eagerly anticipating this one. Thanks doc!
Hey Zach! Awesome video! Would you recommend this for flat-footed people?
Got My First pair a birthday present from my son earlier this month
Beautiful Specimen absolutely fantastic performance.. Getting my next pair soon ❤
It’s the plate right under foot- they really need an orthotic or something to make them comfortable for heavier strikes- some don’t mind it, some get snake bites with them
I'd love to try these but all long distance reviews say they're knackered at 300 to 400 , so not good enough for me 🤔
5:07 this doesn’t necessarily mean the shoe is giving you consistently lower heart rate at same time and pace of running vs the new balances.
It’s better but not “plush” - still plastic under there but the rocker helps a lot - some love it some hate it - I personally thought it felt awesome under the Mets
this is flippin' awesome. love the detailed analysis and substance here! thank you!
Welcome to the sneakerverse
Can you give us a reasoning for your nice heel strike running style ? Any advantage ?
Habit
I’m curious what you’d recommend for marathon training between these and the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2’s?
depends if the pebax plate bothers you or not- the On’s are more economical - Saucony more forgiving
I tend to have knee pain sometimes and i wear 9.5 wide , do you think this model would be good for me ?
I'm waiting for my first pair the cloud nova
hey, do you do any videos on Hokas? I don't see a video solely on them. Thank you!
Not on the channel yet- next few weeks
Any suggestions on an On Cloud model for chronic back pain? It’s time for me (60YO female, small frame and build with high arch) to have a decent daytime walk around shoe. I’m considering Cloudrunner, On Cloud 5 or Cloudmonster. Would love to know your thoughts. TY!
Sneakers look amazing! I have to get me a pair.. Where did you get your v-neck thirt from?
Could you do the Cloud Neo Nexus just because its the first 100% recyclable shoe and a monthly payment for your shoes as a service so you send them back after 6 months and if you want to continue the subscription you just get a new pair made from components from the old pairs that have been broken down and is 100% circularity meaning you re-use every piece of the previous shoe. I just ran in them and the springboard and the light weight was incredible. Nothing about them felt 100% recyclable. They could revolutionize the shoe industry.
Would you recommend these shoes for working out IN the gym and running during the workout outside? So a mix of weights with outside cardio. Thanks!
I've got about 300km on my pair of these (colour same as video) and I'm really enjoying them. My only complaint is the lacing, which I'm definitely not a huge fan of.
I played tennis in these and LOVED IT. So surprised by the stability
RIP your ankles eventually
Awesome review! Thank you.
Nice, always wanted to know if "On" was good. Thanks, doc.
Hi foot Doctor zack you make amazing videos and best reviews of shoes. I want ask you . What shoes with best cushion and support recommend me for a use daily i have knee paint
Thank you , unfortunately I couldn't say without an exam
The reason for knee pain, is many times heel landing. Killing for your knees. Cushioning will not solve this, but make it worse. More cushioning will make you land harder! Try to transit to forefoot or midfoot landing.
They are good looking shoes. I was hoping youd check the durometer on the helion foam.
My durometer isnt great for foams , used for rubber so i dont have good numbers for the foam
@@FootDoctorZach that's okay thanks for the good reviews, very informative.
Preciate your review! Really sold the shoe, thanks man! ◡̈
V2 coming out on the 15th
Do you speculate that they would be good for splayfoot + toe capsulitis?
If these work then something else with a plate above the foam will probably feel similar
I've just started running in these and they are great shoes!
Great to hear!
How much are they? I’m in healthcare & have Plantar Facilities 😩
@@tanr2167 I think $260 SGD they were. Got a few new colourways too.
What are the best inserts for my on shoes! Also what are the advantages of bubble laces?
Id need to see your foot to know but I like Move and Powerstep- heres my laces video: ruclips.net/video/VKc0bhcKFvY/видео.html
Thanks for this running shoe review, been curious about these!
*health
Yeah i mean unless you wear them 24/7 from the time of birth I dont see an issue. We spend a lot of time barefoot as it is and the human foot was never meant to run on asphalt so i dont see issues aside from if the plate is too stiff and close to your foot with no give you could get heel pain but thats about it
Im debating this shoe. A tad more cushion then I’m use to. I’m using the cloudflow 3 which is nice
I have the gaviota 3 and Clifton 8..how are these compared to them and are they better
Can you test the adidas stabil next gen or the ASICS sky elite ff2?
Good shoes aren’t about what “feels” comfortable. It’s about support to your foot bones. Ask a podiatrist. Most shoes that have a sole that bends in half easily don’t offer the bone support your metatarsals, arch, ankle and other bones need (brands like Nike) so cheap to make , it’s all marketing. That’s why Asics and New Balance are still a top recommendation in the podiatrist community.
They are good shoes on seem to out last other brands , When it comes to grip they basically have cleets in the soft ground
How do these compare to the cloud swift.
Can we put in a Move Game Day Pro arched insole or even the Inov8 Boomerangs?
I’d say the game day pros are probably the bulkiest orthotic I’d put in those - anything bigger would prob start slipping- these are low low counters
Hi there, great review! Would you recommend this shoe for marathon running? Thanks.
Sure- as long as you are midfoot striking and not true heel
How high are you off the ground with these.Do they make you taller?
What's with all the heel striking?
Thank you. Very comprehensive and detailed review. Question: does it come in E variant (wide foot) ?
Not that Ive seen but it may depends on what region of the world you're in
Zach would you reccomended these for older men who are still on their feet all day working?
My grandfather had A pair from the brand but I think it’s time for a serious upgrade
*Recommend*
I dont know if these would be the best standing all day shoes TBH
Good as a lifestyle shoe?
I’m constantly on my feet while at work and always feeling walking 3.5 afterwork so I am looking for comfortable shoe and the cloud monster is looking like a really good shoe. Any recommendations
I love these. Hoping they will lead to more enjoyable runs.
That’s great looking shoe.
But how was the supporting for the arch? I m a 6 ft 85 k flat foot guy.
Do you suggest I get this shoe for small run / casual wear?
I had no issues with arch support but it’s case by case
Just found your page. Excitedly I was curious about your take on New Balance Rebel V2 (my absolute favorite) the V3 will be coming out soon along with their Supercomp pacer line. I would love to see your opinion on these!
Great review. I have the cloudflow. Amazing looking but for whatever reason , I get plantar fasciitis within a day or two of wearing them. So they sit in my shoe closet unused.
Yeah that’s can be an issue for alot of foot types
Great review dude. Can't believe you sacrificed one for the team. 😂
My bro with the Michael Bay cut, Excellent video
Haha thanks
Would you recommend these being on your feet 12 hours a day as a nurse? Thanks!
No- the plate will annoy you - the Cloudsurfer is much more forgiving for that kind of profile
@@FootDoctorZach Thank you. Going with the Asics Novablast 3's instead 👍
Are these any good for standing all day? As healthcare worker with 36hr shifts, i stand up a lot of time 😢
Wouldn’t be my first choice that’s for sure - these are more for performance - the cloud surfers more comfort
I’m always looking for a sneaker for vacation that I can throw in the gym after vacation this is a great review might cop
Thanks- hope it works well for you
have you done any videos talking about advantages or disadvantages of shoes that try to simulate a barefoot experience like vibram fivefingers or vivo barefoot? being a foot doctor i feel like you would have a more nuanced take than most people regarding that
Ive done all the research on it but havent put it together in a video--its not black and white fore sure and some of the papers people have put out are so bad that its hard to comb through whats decent science and whats just opinion/ dunning-krueger
🤷♂️ it broke in for me but could just be a mismatch
@@FootDoctorZach thanks, I’ll get the 10 and see if it breaks in. Just better not get it dirty so I can return it if I have to lol
How do I get my hands on a pair of zoom cage 3s. I can't find them anywhere and I like them more than the 4s.
eBay
