The orange car at the 2:00 mark is most definitely our friend Tom Goodno. It's not a Ford and never was though, it is a 3.5 Liter Honda V6 with a Turbo pushing 23+ lbs of boost on ethanol. Super efficient and extremely high power to weight: it's at 650hp to the ground weighing 1400 lbs. And it's one of the only mid engines I see on here :) gotta be nimble in the dunes if your gonna play in one of the worlds largest sand boxes! Sweet video, tons of horsepower! Happy duning to all

That's one trend i love for sure !! The one that makes every V8 Big Block twin turbocharged over a 1000hp . Then you compete against your neighbour hood to know who can do the best Wheelies. Been dominating that back in the days...

Never been to Glamis, Im from Texas,, But seems like the Bike Scene in Arizona brought on some Really good Custom Shops,,,One being Azz Kikir and Dirty Bird ,,,Was the $2,250 winner associated or possibly have bought his Sand Rail from John Shoppe? I remember seeing some vid's and pics of a very similar set up?

When do they know when to go ?
If you watch the start of the race you will see 3 vehicles the two racers then either another dunebuggy or sxs and he will blow a horn. The reason being they do a roll race since these buggys wheelie while doing 100mph trying to get one to launch from a dead stop wouldn't be so easy. Lol. I hope this helps if not then just pretend it did so I don't feel like I wasted 5 mind typing this lol

Being a 1/4 mile rag racer on asphalt, why the rolling start? Just wonderng
They do that because these cars are making insane power with the engine in the rear and spongy suspensions not made for drag racing. Everyone would be doing instant vertical wheel stands from a dead stop launch (no wheely bars). It would be less fun and more dangerous, so the roll in is the compromise. Plus, on the sand 100 mph feels like 180 anyways. These guys going 120+ are nuts.

Why don't they make these mid-engined to keep the nose down better and not make their cars into unaerodynamic walls? They could probably save some weight and ditch the useless 2 rear seats.
+jeffinillinois These are multipurpose cars. When they aren't racing they are Duning or Pre Running. Need the engines in the rear to keep the front end light for those purposes. And wheelies are fun ;) when your not racing for $$$

This is not what these mechanics do for a living. This is publicity for their racing engine businesses. They're not trying to set a record. They're advertising. And you do that with cars that wheelie not with elapse time. Oh and Jeffery would you please invest in a dictionary?

Clint Kysar A FirePunk built 48RE stage 1 competition tranny is rated for 800hp....most of the cars being built for the sand are at least that nowadays...these $20k trannys can take between 1500-2000hp all day long of relentless driving anyways....diesel might do it for $8k with over 1000lb/trq but these LS cars are doing it with matching HP and Torgue in most occasions. It’s a different application....the 5.9cummins weighs approximately 1,100lbs whereas the LS3 weighs 350-400 depending on how dressed up the motor is....for these applications to be able to hit 130+mph you need something light, durable and fast af....if you dropped a built diesel and tranny into a sand car it’d be a fat pig by itself and barely be able to get above 70 in the sand.
