Awesome reaction bro! The controversy stemmed from the fact that she was seen as Hannah Montana. For many, it was out of left field, but I loved it so much. In hindsight, the controversy was overblown in my opinion. Another song from this era/album that you should check out is Who Owns My Heart, for it's a great song.

I was a fan of Miley ever since Hannah Montana (I was like 4 lol) and seeing this transition from Hannah to Miley Cyrus was really shocking BUT as a young kid I loved it idk 😭. People were definitely shaming Miley for it which was weird since she was literally 17-18 (teenage phase)

this song was a bop, but 2012 Miley was still seen as a disney star, so people saw this music video as very controversial. It was so ahead of its time for a Disney star. It was like a very big step from disney to this music video. But she wanted to break free of her disney image. That's why she cut her hair and became a whole new person to the media, although she just started acting more like herself because she always was a free spirit and wild, she always was just herself.
probably because she talks about going through guys like it’s nothing, is barely clothed, says “hell”, etc which at the time was extremely frowned upon for disney stars lmao. looking back on it it’s extremely silly but at the time it definitely caused an insane uproar.
