Your videos inspire me so much. I have actually started my own channel just because I have watched so much of your content. My husband and I just moved to Alaska and though it would be the perfect time!
You’ve done a good job putting together this series of videos especially the prep and gear ones. I chose the Lemosho route in 2019 for exactly the reason you mentioned which was more time to acclimatize. I was 70 when I summited which I attributed to a dedicated training program, staying hydrated during the trek (4-5 liters of water and electrolytes) per day and using the pole, pole approach. I also used Diamox. It has side effects like numbing and tingling in the extremities and may upset some hikers stomachs. It also acts as a diuretic which means you will be up peeing a few times during the night. This leads to not sleeping well which of course contributes to fatigue as the days pass. I did keep a dedicated Nalgene pee bottle in the tent to avoid those midnight toilet trips. I also kept my spare batteries and camera in my sleeping bag to keep them from freezing. It was an incredible experience despite the crowds and the guides and porters are so amazing. I think because of your age you might be able to get by with less training but for those over 40/50 it’s so important to be really conditioned. I don’t think you want to underestimate the mental component of the trek. Fatigue and bad weather can really affect your mindset so being fit and hydrated really will help. Keep having adventures and stay safe in the crazy times😎
Congratulations! Summiting Kili is a huge accomplishment and shouldn't be taken lightly! I summited back in 2015 at age 41. I was the very last hiker to summit. Just like you guys I did the Macheme Route in the middle of November. It only rained from Shira Camp to Lava Tower. After that we were above the clouds. While it was wet going during the raining season offers the advantage of very, very few crowds. There were only 16 hikers going from all the tour groups. During the high season I was told there can be as many as 300. I basically had the mountain to myself! If you can take the rain hiking in the raining season has it's own brand of allure. Something you won't get fighting in the crowds.
very similar experiences when I did EBC trek in Nepal. I always stayed at the back as I'm just naturally slower and that's ok, I made it there. I also had some sugar drops (for diabetics specifically) for when I needed a boost even though I'm not a diabetic I lost my appetite and it helped me. I found it more of a mental struggle more than anything, but working on your cardio I found to be the biggest factor in helping me succeed. My thighs were like steel when I came down and I could breathe which felt wonderful. Go slow, book a good tour provider and have a strong desire to summit. Can't wait until I actually do Kili soon!
Jayawijaya (in Indonesia) is also one of the 7 summits, to my knowledge. I did it pole2 for sure and I was 53 years old back then. I am planning to go back with my son for his 15 birthday next year.
Glad you guys can still put out content even with this no travel coz of corona. Im not that lucky. Cheers to when we travel again. For my case vlog again haha.
Thank you!! I was wondering about all this! Glad you and Matt had a great time & congratulations!! Don’t know if anyone else was maybe getting just a little bit annoyed with him interrupting her? No hate, obviously sometimes it happens naturally in conversation, just found some of it a bit cringe, hopping this doesn’t become a couple channel 😬 Can’t wait to see what else you create on your channel 💕
Madelyne LeDrew I was thinking the exact same thing!!! The interrupting was driving me crazy. I stopped half way through. I think just a Nadine video would’ve been better.
I've been thinking of taking up a wee bit of mountaineering as a complete novice - this is such a great inspiration! Thinking of doing the tallest peak in Sweden to begin with... The unpronouncable (for foreigners) Kebnekaise.
Thanks for making this video. It gives me a better idea of what to expect and how to plan out the hike which I plan on doing next year once this whole corona thing dies down.
1 down 7 summits to go! You have to now count Zealandia of course. ;) Thanks for do such a great job of detailing many of the considerations that go into planning a trip like that. Much of which translates into daily life. I hope the porters & crew can get through the economic storm that is just beginning. Best wishes to everyone!
Thank You so much for this wonderful and very useful video! One of the best so far I have seen! I am really considering to climb Kilimanjaro even though I am not like super fit hiker. But I can train for it 😊 All the best ❤
Question for the Q&A: Did you find the crowds took away from the experience at all? Or did you find that having other people around with a common goal (i.e. summiting) made the experience better? I'm an avid hiker and I like being alone on the trails, but I'm curious how this experience differs from a normal hike!
I love your videos of your climb and congratulations too! My wife and I summited Kili just over 5 years ago and went the same route but in 4.5 days up and 1.5 down. Everything you speak to is spot on. You two are such a great pair and loved seeing the two of you sharing the experience together. I have our video up on RUclips as well and watch it every so often because it was amazing.
One thing I did when I climbed Kilimanjaro last year was climb Mount Meru a few days before. It is, in itself, an amazing hike and it helped a ton with acclimating to altitude. Also, I climbed via the Northern Circuit including a night at Crater Camp. Made for a short summit day and I would definitly recommand that if it's possible for you. While the Northern Circuit sees less vegetation, the type of vegetation we missed on Kilimanjaro we had seen on Meru.
It's really amazing to see how many different ways there are to climb Kilimanjaro. I probably would take the same (or a similar) route you guys did with it having a higher success rate for reaching the summit. Thank you for the video! If I decide to take this on one day, at least I know what to expect and how much planning is required.
Hi Hey and Matt, awesome video!! I have seen many Kilimanjaro training videos and yours is one of the best and very informative (specifically on medication, and some tips)!! Thanks for making this video and looking forward to your packing list video!!
That’s the nicest and most adorably video put together! Thank you guys. Very helpful tips especially around the route to choose, how to choose a tour provider and training necessary !
I almost climb it last year 😊,Marangu is the most popular and easier but it's full of people, not comfortable if you want to enjoy your hiking...I also like Machine but my favourite route is Lemosho route, you can see Animals and good for acclimatization 👌 now it's must be on my bucket list
I loved your last video taking us up up the summit! I was routing for ya'll the whole time. I don't know if I could do it myself, but thanks for this video with the lowdown on how to make it happen!
By far the best simply put how to prepare to trek kili video! I’ve been watching your kili series and was wondering and wondering if or when you would announce which tour company you went with. I was so pleasantly surprised that you went with KA! That company has been at the top of my list since I was 18! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH for sharing your experience with us! Hopefully I’ll get to summit in 2022 after I graduate college! Fingers crossed!
Great video, just as a side note cerebral oedema is just brain swelling rather than filling with fluid :) but you're right pulmonary oedema is fluid in the lungs
Perfect video. This is very important knowledge that you guys share everything here about climbing on KILIMANJARO. Climbing of the highest mountains in the world is one of the my goal that l need those informations.
Greetings from Chicago. I watched and listened to your well reviewed/guide of your experience and I personally was looking to see if you would reference those hard working porters and you did ! Thank you for being honest and kind to my family. It is my wife's home and we are particularly aware of the treatment of some porters and the not so pretty side of the Kilimanjaro business there. We are glad you guys were successful in your summit pursuit and were able to leave only your footprints ! Asante Sana !
I love every video of your climb me and my wife are planning to do this next year we are going to film it I have so much inspiration from you guys so thank you
Nadine I’ve been watching you from the start and I’m so happy for you! Side not you should really do some backpacking like the AT CDT and PCT in the Us Planning a backpacking to Appalachian trail!
Thank you for this great video! I am planning on climbing Kilimanjaro in June 2021. This gives me great guidance on how to train. And how to shop for a tour provider. SO much info! I am thrilled I found you!
Wow, you are from Kelowna. Wasn't sure until I saw the view of the bridge. I am watching this from Lower Mission, how cool is that lol. I am planning a trip to Climb Kilimanjaro in February for my 65th birthday to raise awareness about Climate Change.
Wow very nice video guys! My two cents. It seems I've been on summit two weeks after you and it was Much less crowded. We've also taken the Machame route based on time and statistics. Of our group of three we all taken Diamax and all summited with no major issues. We've opted our if renting gear, although you can come to Tanzania in t-shirt and shorts and rent all the equipment I and my friends prefer gear we know and can trust. Our biggest issue with all tours was that all touring agencies advice you to stay in Mochi, which is basically starting point for all tourist. We decided to stay in Arusha, which is 1-1,5 h drive farer than Mochi to Machame gate, but it an Actual big city with nice hotels, restaurants and much less crowded with clibers.
I think part of the reason we had such crowds was because we summited on a night with a full moon, which is quite a popular thing to do. That's awesome you all made it!
I thought that Mount Kosciuszko was the easiest of all continents - it was like my daily training route (I am living in the Alpine area). o.k if Puncak Jaya was meant as the highest, then...right Kilimanjaro was the easiest, BUT the summit was very tricky, someone who had no experience mountaineering came to the top but the experienced alpinist couldn't - the catch was "just take it easy and slow...".
Loved this video! I was supposed to climb the mountain this summer but it was cancelled because of COVID-19 :(. I now moved it to next year and I will follow the Northern Circuit. I am already kind of nervous because I'm from the Netherlands which is a country that is possibly the flattest in the world and most points are below sea level. I do have some experience with hiking in the mountains of France, Spain and Italy but I am of course not used to height. I train like 2 or 3 times a week and then I will like row or cycle, so I think I'll be kind of fine with the cardio part, but the thought of climbing Kilimanjaro still makes me very nervous hahah. Long story short: I really loved this, and thank you so much for all the information (though I still have a year to prepare)
How many more of the 7 summits to go? Which 1 is next? U could always also try for the 7 '2ed summits' (K2, Logan, Kenya, Tyree etc.), the 7 '3rd summits', the 7 highest volcanos, the list goes on, like the 14 peaks >8K metres.
I think one thing to note that's important is that, some people live at various altitudes, for example people whom live in Florida may have never seen a mountain in their life, will have a significantly harder time, opposed to Denver CO they live mile high, and have 14ers accessible to practice.
my daughter is making a 10 days trek and I am so worried for her. she does hike all the time but this is not your ordinary hike even for people who professionally hike. it's also VERY EXPENSIVE, I think so three of them are going. I want to tell her not to go but she is going anyways...as always..
Yea I got altitude sickness in Colorado in Breckinridge at 10,000 ft. during winter, but not in the summer. I guess because the air was denser maybe. I definitely wouldn’t be able to hike in that condition; It felt like I had the flu.
Loved this trip, and all of your information was actually really helpful! 👏👏 Was there any negative about the trip? I get nervous taking on big trips like this, like they seem like a good idea, but then I feel like I have bitten off more than I can chew! What an amazing adventure though!
Hey Nadine, watching your videos gave me the courage to travel by myself a couple of years ago. Now I am considering Kilimanjaro. Just wondering if you encountered any older solo women on your Kilimanjaro trek? I am 54. Also, any reason why you went with the tour company you did as opposed to a Canadian tour company? I have looked at the KPAP website and not really sure how to choose a tour provider.
There was a 60 year old lady in our group who summited along with us! She is quite and active person and hikes regularly, but she didn't seem to have any problem keeping up with the group. We saw several other older people on the mountain. The hike isn't super demanding or technically difficult, it's a long, slow grind. We chose our tour provider mainly because the dates they had available worked perfectly for our plans. They also were KPAP approved and they had very good reviews which made us feel like we were in good hands. I'd recommend checking the tour company reviews on Trip Advisor before making any decisions. Hope this helps, good luck!
@@mattofstie9298 Thanks for the speedy response. I am pretty active and run and hike so I am not so concerned about that, more so being a solo female traveller. Thanks also for the info on the tour company and will definitely check out reviews before booking anything. I don't know if tours are even taking place this year or next, due to covid 19 but this is a trip that has definitely sparked some interest.
Just a heads up if you are traveling from the USA yellow fever and rabies is not required. In fact my doctor said its not a risk for travel in Tanzania and the vaccine for Yellow fever is a live vaccine that comes with it's own risks of getting it (it def makes you sick for about a week). Typhoid and Hep are the vaccines they deemed as most important.
What a great series of videos…thank you. Wondering if you have heard about altitude tents, and how effective they are for pre-trip acclimatization? You literally set it up on your bed, the theory being that its oxygen-limiting design trains your body while you sleep. Any anecdotal info to share?
Hi Nadine! Thanks for the informative video. Can you talk about what it was like climbing Kilimanjaro and being vegan? Was your tour provider accommodating and were the meals substantial enough? Did you pack your own snacks? Fellow vegan here and I’m thinking about climbing Kilimanjaro! ☺️. Thanks!!!
My question would be what you had in your backpack that you carried during the day and where you get those water pipes? or whatever that is where you drink from during the hike:)) really love your videos greetings from Austria
Dear Nadine & Matt, thanks a lot for all this information. It has helped me to gather more insights for my personal Kili-adventure. Great job! And now for everyone else: In case someone is interested - I am looking for a hiking partner for the Northern Circuit Route up Kilimanjaro. At this moment, I am only by myself, but I would like to open a group tour. The tour company is Nafika Tours. Dec 21 - 29 (9 days) A little about me: Female, 44 years old, vegan, likes to read, gentle soul, physically fit, adventurous If you're also planning a trip to Kilimanjaro and would like to join, drop me a message, and we can chat more about details! Looking forward to hearing from you!
For your packing video, did you bring your own mattress pad or use the one from the tour operator? And can you talk about your sleeping bags please. I'm going in July 2021 (Rongai). Great info on all of this series so far! Thanks and congratulations!! 💕
Hello it was an awesome video 🤘I just want to know when and what time are we suppose to take Diamox .. As I have sufffered headache in Everest base camp trek , I haven’t taken at that time .. Byvtaking Diamox I hope I will not have Headache
I'm a grandad. I did it. Lived my life at sea level too and while exhausted at the summit, I felt ok. As long as you can walk for a few hours each day for about a week, you'll be fine. (Use diamox)

totally agree
Imagine hiking up a mountain that size and being proposed to 😍 (i’m a big fan, thanks for this video Nadine❤️!)
Intense 😅
now that you've climb up Kilimanjaro.. do you have a plan or would you like to climb any other of the 7 peaks? if so which one? :)
Kilimanjaro would be intense 😅

Doing the stairs at Wreck Beach everyday would be a good workout to train 🤣

@@live.travel. Only difference is the scenery on the way to EBC is so much nicer than Kilimanjaro
The best Kilimanjaro Need-to-Know video!
Jayawijaya (in Indonesia) is also one of the 7 summits, to my knowledge. I did it pole2 for sure and I was 53 years old back then. I am planning to go back with my son for his 15 birthday next year.

I had a similar thought but in the oposite direction. I felt she interrupted him more often. Regardless, a great video, very informative and useful
I love that "Pole pole"

How did the Apple Watch work on the mountain? Did you use it to track your hike? Battery life? Did you use the workout feature for hiking?
we used it, but it ended up dying on the summit night! and I had to charge it everynight! But I found it quite handy :)
Hello. My questions would be. Where do you pee? 🙈 Is the food strict or flexible. Ie suitable for vegans etc. 🌻
Sarah Summers - I was wondering the same thing.
We will answer this in the Q&A :)
Probably just behind any trees or rocks, but areas where there is nothing would be more difficult
There are camps where people can pee also portable toilet sometimes are carried by porters..
POLE POLE
KARIBUNI TENA TANZANIA 🇹🇿
There are some toilets on route, but not much and toilets in camps. But some rest places(not camps but stops during day) are really nasty.

Would love to meet you one day, this sounds like the half dome hike at yosemite national park, which we did NOT finish, and almost broke up on ☠️
Actually I believe Mount Kosciusko in Australia to be the easiest, it’s one of the seven summits but only at a modest 2200 meters.
There are few 7 summit lists, some do not include fhis mountain, (they take highest from all oceania) i assume they weee ralking about such list
Always thought Aconcagua was easier than Kilimanjaro. Guess I know what the new thing I learned today was.
Wow that's tough hike. Not sure I'd be able to do that.
Cool video again. Very helpful
Can’t wait to go there someday 🏔❤️😊
Great travel vlog. Hope mine will get where you already are someday. Stay safe
Nice summary of informations!
This video was so helpful 😊. Just one more question~ how far before and after your trek would you recommend booking plane tickets?
I'd say at least day before trek. You'll need to rest after log plane ride and start acclimatizing since airport itself at 1300m.

I think one thing to note that's important is that, some people live at various altitudes, for example people whom live in Florida may have never seen a mountain in their life, will have a significantly harder time, opposed to Denver CO they live mile high, and have 14ers accessible to practice.
Impeccable images.
Keep up the good work.
Stay safe.
Very informative, thank you!
my daughter is making a 10 days trek and I am so worried for her. she does hike all the time but this is not your ordinary hike even for people who professionally hike. it's also VERY EXPENSIVE, I think so three of them are going. I want to tell her not to go but she is going anyways...as always..
I have do 5 Marathan I am used to 5 - 6 hours with strong mindset
Yea I got altitude sickness in Colorado in Breckinridge at 10,000 ft. during winter, but not in the summer. I guess because the air was denser maybe. I definitely wouldn’t be able to hike in that condition; It felt like I had the flu.
how did you eat? are special features considered? (vegan / allergy) 🤗
Vegan Lyfe! 💪
Loved this trip, and all of your information was actually really helpful! 👏👏
Was there any negative about the trip? I get nervous taking on big trips like this, like they seem like a good idea, but then I feel like I have bitten off more than I can chew! What an amazing adventure though!
Did they set up the toilet every time you guys needed to pee? Or was it just in the campsites?
Great question! I’ll answer it in the q&a
How many days did it take to go up and how many to come down mt??
Hi
I assume the porters will carry all your gear up to a certain weight limit. What did you carry in your day packs?
I want to see you both try to summit K2, show me that video 😁
I really appreciate your video a lot
and did i hear 27100 usd? great video, thank you.
Hello! Great video!
Nobody talks about one thing - toilet!
Where do you do #1 and #2?
Behind the tree 😂, diapers, portable toilets?
We talk about it in our Q&A video!
I find smoking helps before, but not during the hike. I smoked 40 cigarettes a day before the climb so that my body got used to hypoxia.
You cant enter Tanzania without it
What a great series of videos…thank you. Wondering if you have heard about altitude tents, and how effective they are for pre-trip acclimatization? You literally set it up on your bed, the theory being that its oxygen-limiting design trains your body while you sleep. Any anecdotal info to share?
Very nice 😊🌴👍
Loved it!
Hi Nadine! Thanks for the informative video. Can you talk about what it was like climbing Kilimanjaro and being vegan? Was your tour provider accommodating and were the meals substantial enough? Did you pack your own snacks? Fellow vegan here and I’m thinking about climbing Kilimanjaro! ☺️. Thanks!!!
will talk about it in q&a!
Do you take your own tent? Or what is the largest thing that you had to pack
We’ll answer this in our packing guide!
@@heynadine Fucking hell just answer
@heynadine where can I find it?
My question would be what you had in your backpack that you carried during the day and where you get those water pipes? or whatever that is where you drink from during the hike:)) really love your videos greetings from Austria
Dear Nadine & Matt, thanks a lot for all this information. It has helped me to gather more insights for my personal Kili-adventure. Great job!
And now for everyone else: In case someone is interested - I am looking for a hiking partner for the Northern Circuit Route up Kilimanjaro. At this moment, I am only by myself, but I would like to open a group tour. The tour company is Nafika Tours. Dec 21 - 29 (9 days)
A little about me: Female, 44 years old, vegan, likes to read, gentle soul, physically fit, adventurous
If you're also planning a trip to Kilimanjaro and would like to join, drop me a message, and we can chat more about details!
I’m only 9 but I’m planning to climb Kilimanjaro
You will probably die
@@blasty2272 I hope you do!!
@@blasty2272 dream big my friend!
Thanks for the video! Very helpful. Qq, when you say 7 days, it is out and back, right? Not only 7 days to the summit.
$2700/person is pretty reasonable considering it's a 7day tour with 23staff.
So is there an Everest base camp trip in your future?
What kind of gear did you bring and what did the company provide?
What your provider did you go with?
Koziosco in Australia the easiest
I did it as a kid and only 2200M high
I want to take my grandad there but I’m worried his health. Is it possible?
I'm a grandad.
I did it.
Lived my life at sea level too and while exhausted at the summit, I felt ok.
As long as you can walk for a few hours each day for about a week, you'll be fine.
(Use diamox)
