Holy Week in Malaga is an important religious, social and cultural event held every year in the city of Malaga. During the processional rites carried out from Palm Sunday to Good Friday, all the brotherhoods lead, following a pre-established itinerary, the mysteries linked to the Passion of Jesus in the Via Crucis while on Easter Sunday all the corporations accompany the risen Christ. Holy Week in Malaga received the qualification of Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional dated 16 February 1980 from the Secretaría General de Turismo of the Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio of the Spanish government
The structures on which the sacred images are transported are locally called "tronos", equivalent to the Italian term vara. In Spanish, in similar events, they are commonly called "pasos". The definition of the bearers of the "tronos" called "hombres de throne", the equivalent of the costaleros of the "pasos", is also different. There are notable differences in the conduct of the simulacra: while the «pasos» are processioned with the «costaleros» placed inside the structure, the «tronos» are carried on the shoulders of the «hombres de throne» using wooden poles protruding several metres, anteriorly, posteriorly and along the lateral sides of the throne structure. Thanks to this peculiarity, generally the «tronos» have larger dimensions than the «pasos».
As throughout Spain, also in Malaga the Easter processional processions are made up of sections usually made up of two "thronos" per brotherhood, one linked to a mystery of the Via Crucis of Christ and the other to the Virgin Mary always in the sense of Mater Painful. Each of them is accompanied by penitents called «Nazarenes» with various functions: responsible for transporting the candles, the Rules (the books with the rules that regulate the activity of each individual brotherhood), the lanterns, the censers, the incense burners and « promesas" (people who have promised to do penance in exchange for the dissolution of a vow).
Characteristic of the city is the escort of the Military and State Security Corps to the venerated Sacred Holders such as the "Spanish Parachute Brigade" ("Cristo de Ánimas y Ciegos"), the Spanish Legion (Jesus crucified: "Cristo de Mena"), the Armada Española - Navy ("Cristo de Mena", "Nazareno del Paso", "Virgen de la Esperanza", "Virgen de la Soledad", Virgen del Carmen - Stella Maris), the "Spanish Infantry", the "Navy Infantry Spanish", the "Local Police of Spain", the Guardia Civil ("Santísimo Cristo de la Expiración", "Virgen de los Dolores", Virgen del Pilar), Cuerpo Nacional de Policía ("Virgen del Amor"), Aviation (" Nazareno de la Misericordia" and "Nuestra Señora del Gran Poder"), Chivalry ("Cristo de Los Milagros" and "Virgen de la Amargura" or "Zamarrilla").
In addition to the penitence stations, the brotherhoods carry out activities that revolve around the three fundamental pillars of the common "Rule": training, worship and charity. There are many charitable works that the brotherhoods carry out in Malaga today as in the past: the management of canteens, the administration of finances, the payment of food to the poor and the guarantee of care for the elderly and the infirm. The cult through novenas, triduums and celebrations with regular periods and times which often include as an initiation the giving of medals to newborns and infants with the heraldic seal of the brotherhood to which the family unit belongs.
There is an «Association of Brotherhoods» founded in 1921, the forerunner of its kind in Spain, whose members are elected every four years by the «Elder Brothers» of the various brotherhoods. The first elected president was a member of the "Archicofradía de la Sangre", the oldest in the city. This institution, independent of any government, is responsible for organizing|
