Suona 唢呐 maker from Yongqiao 埇桥, Anhui, China

A documentary about Ji Xinmin (姬新民), a master suona (唢呐) craftsman from Yongqiao District (埇桥区), Suzhou (宿州市), northern Anhui province (安徽省), eastern China.

The suona is a very popular instrument in Yongqiao, which borders the neighboring provinces of Jiangsu, Shandong, and Henan, where the suona has deep roots, thus making this region a kind of nexus (精英) for suona culture.
Ji calls the huge suona he plays at 11:15 "Dangshan da suona" (砀山大唢呐), named for Dangshan County (砀山县), located two counties north of Yongqiao, also in Suzhou, Anhui. This instrument is in the collection of the Dangshan County Cultural Center (砀山县文化馆).
This instrument's total length is 51.2 in. (130 cm), and the length of its wooden tube is 32.3 in. (82 cm). The tube is made from naturally dried huali mu (花梨木). It can play most easily in G and D diao.

美妙的唢呐曲不仅需要演奏家高超的技术，更需要唢呐制作工艺的完美契合。埇桥唢呐制作技艺可谓苏、鲁、豫、皖接壤区域唢呐制作界的“精英”，蕴藏着深厚的历史渊源和文化传统积淀。
年近七旬的唢呐制作技艺传承人姬新民大师神采奕奕，精神矍铄，在接受采访期间给我们介绍了唢呐的种类、形制、选料、制作工序以及唢呐的选购、保养等知识。
唢呐由哨片、铜芯、气盘、木杆管身和喇叭碗五部分组成，每一部分各有独特功能。
制作一支完整的唢呐需要十几道工序，包括选料、唢呐杆音筒的锥度加工、钻发音孔、杆子的车旋定型、打磨套箍以及防干裂处理、唢呐杆的调音等。
制作好的唢呐在吹奏之前必须进行咂哨、试音等准备工作。此外，唢呐的选购和保养也很重要。
姬大师制作的唢呐选料考究、造型美观、音色精准、做工精良，适应不同地域，不同气候和季节。采访期间，姬大师挑选了一块红木，进行唢呐现场制作，不一会儿功夫，一块不起眼的木料蝶变成一支古朴低调而又不失雅致的唢呐。姬老师总结道，只要锥度做得对，孔眼钻得准，哨片修理好，这支唢呐基本就没有问题。
砀山大唢呐是姬新民大师制作的一支特大号唢呐，目前，砀山大唢呐也是国内第一支特大号唢呐，现被收藏于砀山县文化馆。
“与唢呐结缘，一辈子一刻不停歇”。姬大师不仅对唢呐制作工艺进行不断的研讨和创新，而且对唢呐艺术人才的培养非常重视。在姬大师的心目中，唢呐制作技艺融入的是自己对唢呐的那份至真至诚的热爱。
如今，姬大师制作的唢呐已广泛应用于国内知名音乐院校的教学演出和各大音乐团体艺术家的演奏和收藏，在他看来，埇桥唢呐制作技艺的未来将会更加美好。
