I have renovated my lawn 3x in the last year, last spring, then autumn, then also this spring a couple weeks ago, its looking good but still not the level i am wanting, first time i top dressed in compost the last 2 times i top dressed in a 70-30 sports sand soil mix, i bought a lute and have levelled it out as i am after a bowling green finish, i learned from the first time i top dressed in the 70-30 that the worms hated it and left worm casts everywhere so this time daily i lightly flatten them down. i also dug out all my borders laid weed membrane put plastic lawn edging all around and used 4 tonne of limestone as i was convinced the lawn was getting weeds spreading from the borders and it looks so much nicer imo. But i have the soil of the lawn the same height as the stone border. basically i hear you say that you should aerate yearly. I dont know but surely after years of doing that you would lose height off the lawn as you are removing a lot of soil everytime. When i aerated mine i had endless amounts of rubble bags of the cores i removed and its surprising how much soil your actually taking out. I appreciate the benefits of doing it but is it really needed?
Hi so you can solid tine aerate) essentially forking the lawn) and hollow tine less often. I suppose you should topdressing to refill the holes from time to time for that reason
@@LawnRight yeah i did think shortly after i typed the comment that top dressing with soil or the sandy soil ive been using will more then add back whats taken out.

Thank you very much for the video I have just had do all of that after leatherjacks and beetles has destroy my prize lawn along with the jackdaws and a badger, but first I spray all my lawns with nematodes I think that is how you spell it watering was a great help and will water three times a day for the over seeding many thanks again.

I’m doing this to my lawn. It’s may & my lawn was so yellow with years of thatch from the previous owners. And a bit of neglect from me . I’m hoping for good results within a couple months. The wife ain’t impressed so far with what I’ve done. Fingers crossed it turns out good
Hi you could apply a weedkiller then wait about 4 or 4 weeks then do the renovation.. or you could apply roundup to kill them off xo pleteky but itll also kill anything else it touches..then after 2 to 3 weeks you can renovate.. or you can just renovate and then accept the new lawn will have weeds in..then apply a weedkiller a few months later on

Very helpful and informative thank you, a quick question, I have an ancient Al-Ko scarifier with two interchangeable blades ? one is a sort of straight blade with an offset and the other is a spring tine device, I seem to recall in the distant past that the spring tine was described as a rake and the other as a verticutter. which should I use to remove the thatch which is minimal now. The minimum height setting when verticutting seems very aggressive on the lawn surface, I was considering a Stihl cordless scarifier which seems to have more depth adjustments.
Thanks. If you only have mininal thatch id just run over with the springy rake version to groom the lawn.. In other words a light tickle through. The bladed versions are for the aggressive needs when thatch has built up over a long time.
Hey Shaun, I scarified back in March and treated with iron sulphate. Worked great at the time. Cut a few times since then and all of a sudden the moss has once again taken over. I can only guess this indicates I didn't scarify deep enough and that water isn't draining away?
Hi .. If you have shaded parts then this will lead to moss (damp shaded areas).. or clay soil can also lead to moss after heavy rains..or yes.. as you said if some thatch remains. Id suggest scarifying every spring and autumn to minimise thatch.. aerate the ground annually and ensure the height of cut is not scalping the lawn
Great video.. will be doing my own overseeding project for the first time in a week or two. Mostly daunted by spreading the compost top dress.. using a landscaping rake and brush only. Hopefully that’ll be ok, but a bit more work! (100sq m roughly). Should I worry about moving the seed around unevenly when brushing in?
Hi adam.. so once youve scatterd the seeds heres what i do.. On completely bare areas i dont use a rake or lute.. i just firm it down as the seeds would move... On areas with grass i use a lute or back of a rake.. i promise you youll be absolutely fine it stays mainly in place.
I've just started my lawn reno. Scarified, and spread 4 in 1 Fertilizer/weed killer. I've got a Hollow tyne machine booked in 10 days. I was think of using a 70-30 mix to top dress as the soil is quite clay based. Does that seem right to you. Thanks
Hi that's all good as long as youre not seeding as the 4 in 1 would kill the seeds. If you're just scarifying and aerating them all good. I'd also sprinkle some gypsum down the aeration holes before dressing too

Hi mow when it's ready. You dont want it getting too long as itll shade the new grasses too much. Please just be very careful and cut on ahigh setting. Turning mowers around can easily move the seeds. As a guide though I'd be looking to leave it a minimum of 3 weeks if possible
Its something i started doing maybe 15 years ago after a coworker said he did his lawn with it and it came up in 3 days. It just adds in alot of good old organic goodness and helps get things off to a good start. I have on occasion used topsoil and thats also come out good. As for levelling etc I tend to use topsoil.. compost helps sandy soils retain moisture and it helps clay soils improve their structure

Hi I've developed my own pricing structure over a few years based on square metres and a lot of trial and error.. If you looked at greenthumb website they offer pricing for a new lawn which is essentially the same as this. I am considerably cheaper but I'm happy with my pricing.
I have a north facing front lawn mostly in shadow and no matter what i do the moss seems to displace the grass, ive tined, scarified, reseeded and top dressed in the past but i seem to be fighting a losing battle, is there a more shade tolerant seed or something im not considering?
Even if you find the best seed (I've honestly not tried that many) lawn still need at least 3 hours a day of sunlight to thrive or they will begin to thin. It is harder when it's in shade all the time. Might be worth asking a couple of suppliers like barenbrug a similar question. Sorry about that

Living in Southern California and I had thatched it in October and fed my lawn “ weed & feed” however I’d like to seed and dress it? Do you think it would be okay? It’s still in the upper 70’s to 80’s. Also to water I might have to step on some of the lawn…is that okay? Your video was amazing!! And I learned quite a bit. I’ve had to start doing my own lawn and it’s a challenge but with your video gave me the confidence! Thank so much! Any chance you have an update on how the lawn looks now?
Hi the temperatures are the key thing to think about and it seems to be just fine at those temperatures - similar to our summer times in the Uk.. so germination should be just fine.. but when its hot like you are having, be sure to keep it well damp for the entire 2 to 4 weeks after seeding.. and then once its all come through continue nursing it with regular watering for several months, as the roots will still be shallow, and any major stresses will lead to issues.. good luck!
Hi Shaun Firstly, very professional complete job - well done. Was thinking about getting a Stihl RL 540 myself - for domestic use it seems to be one of the better options. The only thing putting me off is that it doesn’t have powered drive and I’ve a lot of slopes - is it a heavy unit to push/pull around? Or is it the case that the blades kind of pull it forward? And generally would you recommend it? Should say my lawns are roughly the same area as shown in the video. My preference would be a petrol machine and price wise Billy Goat, Etiel, etc are all a bit much for a domestic user. And one final question - is there a lawn lute you would recommend for domestic use? Price and build quality seem to vary a lot. Love the channel - your advice is always clear, comprehensive and easy to follow. Many thanks.
Hi.. The 540 is pretty good and quieter than others too. I used to use Camon machines but found them to be very loud. That said they were very powerful machines and could cut through thick layers with ease. The Stihl 540 is less powerful and sometimes may need a few passes. Other than that I can't fault it.. especially for the price. To date Ive never seen nor even thought about a drive powered scarifier so cant comment on those Im afraid. Its not a bad idea but I couldnt give any sort of feedback other than choose a good brand. My lute in particular was simply made by some guy off eBay many years ago for £90. That didnt include the handle, so I had to buy a broom handle. In all these years it's as good as new. Its very heavy, and I did snap a broom once inside the shaft moving it. Hope this helps, sorry it's not perfect help! Shaun

Hi lawns need to be measured. Our business wont disclose our own pricing structure as it's quite sensitive. However you can get a feel for pricing based on number of days worked, some profit and cost of materials. As a daily rate you will find small one man bands may charge £100 to £200 per day labour, larger firms will be more due to additional costs. Some businesses who are experts can charge more based on their skill levels. People then use them be cause they know they will get a better service. Sorry this isnt an exact reply. If you were local and wanted a quote we would be happy to do that.. also if you looked at a turfing company they typically charge from £10 to £20 per square metre
@@LawnRight I live in Scotland and I would not recommend dwarf fescue grass , I have to scarify at least 3 times a year, I use spring summer fertiliser till September fortnightly and have sprinklers to water in and autumn rise October December and Feb if condition allow . Sulphate of iron April approx 2 to 3 weeks before scarifying well watered in usually by the weather and again at the back end, this year I am using a liquid sulphate of iron in my backpack as per manufactures specs, and the lawn only looks lush if I leave it at 2 inches or above any lower and it goes a whitish yellow. Considering overseeding with dwarf rye grass. I have approx 200 m2 and take at least 40+ black sacks of thatch off each year, no clay, dig down 4 feet and you get gravel. Does dwarf rye grass generate the same amount of thatch.
Hi its a product that helps break the surface tension of water making it "wetter".. it helps water get to the roots and it helps lawns which have become hydrophobic (actually repel water) because theyve not been watered for so long
Nice job there Shaun, I've just done exact same process over yesterday and this morning. I had to hire an aerator though as unable to afford my own Christ they are expensive! When it was dropped off found it was the solid tine and not hollow tines like I'd ordered. I was suffering from really bad compaction so just used it and it's seemed to free up the area somewhat, do you think I was right in doing so? Also what wetting agent do you use? I've seen yucca have you any experience in it. Thanks for the great info Shaun keep them coming. Barry.
Hi Barry in the short term itll be just fine. Next time you can choose hollow tine. Mine was bought 2nd hand off ebay for a bargain... had to drive 4 hours each way to get it though . Ive read about Yucca and the reviews seem good but havent used it.. i do plan to use a lot of products asap so i can give an opinion on it. The stuff I use is commercial unbranded

Hi yes it's absolutely fine, and same for the aerating.. try not to walk on it after scarifying though so the prepared ground is still "as is" from the day it was scarified . So should be all good barring any crazy bad weather 😊
I have a question, I commented last week saying I've followed this step for step and since then it has rained hard every day for hours. Is there a chance that my seed will be ruined? If so do I need to overseed again? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi its possible seeds may have moved under the compost.. a little look may yield a few clues.. you may see compost that's moved showing bare soil..if so those areas may need more seed.... anyway.. I'd wait another week and see where you are at..and you've any new shoots coming through. For reference I've got a few new shoots after a week of overseeding

Iif you are only scarifying you can leave it as long as you want really. To heavily scarify and have full recovery you need about 6 weeks of growing time after its been done so id say mid October.
I love both. The landzie for its speed and compact news when travelling is a clear winner. The drop spreader for its ability to adjust the flow of dressing 😊
Hi they just break down eventually and so I usually take them to a green waste recycling centre or pop them in the customers own garden waste bin. Itll all get turned into compost eventually 😊
Another sick job. Best about on RUclips! Hi mate. I scarified/aereated/overseeded in April and the lawn is looking good compared to before!! Completely full of grass. Is it worth repeating this process again now? I'm definitely going to be giving it a scarify and aerate. But is it worth top dressing/overseeding? Or should I just Scarify/Aerate and put some fertiliser down as I haven't used any in a while now? What would you do mate? Thanks
Hi thanks for the kind words. If its not thinning then just scarify and aerate. However if it is thin in places you can throw some seed sown and compost on the top.. work it all down to ground with a rake or brush . Guess what im saying is see wht its like after youve done it. Also.. while it is good to do it regular.. if youre actually happy with it leave it be and consider it again in spring
Few options.. black sheer on the lawn at night.. pick off next morning...nematodes or turfsolv are a few options .. I'll be doing a video at some point

I have another quick question please I am looking to scarify the lawn for the first time ever this year so I am a total novice. My Dad always did it but sadly he has recently passed away and his garden and lawn was his pride and joy. I noticed when you scarified you didn't mow the lawn short first. When I look on line for advice as I am about to do it this week it advises to make sure the grass is very short first. So not sure what is best to do. I can see the lawn has a lot of thatch and moss in it and I haven't mown it for 3 weeks. But on your videos you seem to just scarify straight away. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Should I mow the lawn short first of all? Thank you for all your help and advice I really enjoy watching your videos
Hi it is better to mow it nice and short it makes for a better scarify. I will also scarify if it's up to about 2 inches long. Good luck with it. Take your time and itll come good

I over seeded in March and its all looking good. Would you recommend scarification and another overseed in the autumn or just scarify and fertilize. I'm sure there is more thatch but lawn is looking good and so much better than 12 months ago. Thanks Shaun.

Hi you could apply a weedkiller then wait about 4 or 4 weeks then do the renovation.. or you could apply roundup to kill them off xo pleteky but itll also kill anything else it touches..then after 2 to 3 weeks you can renovate.. or you can just renovate and then accept the new lawn will have weeds in..then apply a weedkiller a few months later on

Very helpful and informative thank you, a quick question, I have an ancient Al-Ko scarifier with two interchangeable blades ? one is a sort of straight blade with an offset and the other is a spring tine device, I seem to recall in the distant past that the spring tine was described as a rake and the other as a verticutter. which should I use to remove the thatch which is minimal now. The minimum height setting when verticutting seems very aggressive on the lawn surface, I was considering a Stihl cordless scarifier which seems to have more depth adjustments.
Thanks. If you only have mininal thatch id just run over with the springy rake version to groom the lawn.. In other words a light tickle through.
The bladed versions are for the aggressive needs when thatch has built up over a long time.

Hi there no therea no fertiliser as such in it. Its partly a wetting agent but has other things in that help the plant thanks
Hey Shaun, I scarified back in March and treated with iron sulphate. Worked great at the time. Cut a few times since then and all of a sudden the moss has once again taken over. I can only guess this indicates I didn't scarify deep enough and that water isn't draining away?
Hi .. If you have shaded parts then this will lead to moss (damp shaded areas).. or clay soil can also lead to moss after heavy rains..or yes.. as you said if some thatch remains. Id suggest scarifying every spring and autumn to minimise thatch.. aerate the ground annually and ensure the height of cut is not scalping the lawn

Hilarious. Start by getting a mower with scarifier cartridge which is interchangeable with cutting cylinder. Mower box will pick up all the debris.
Great video.. will be doing my own overseeding project for the first time in a week or two. Mostly daunted by spreading the compost top dress.. using a landscaping rake and brush only. Hopefully that’ll be ok, but a bit more work! (100sq m roughly). Should I worry about moving the seed around unevenly when brushing in?
Hi adam.. so once youve scatterd the seeds heres what i do..
On completely bare areas i dont use a rake or lute.. i just firm it down as the seeds would move...
On areas with grass i use a lute or back of a rake.. i promise you youll be absolutely fine it stays mainly in place.

I've just started my lawn reno. Scarified, and spread 4 in 1 Fertilizer/weed killer. I've got a Hollow tyne machine booked in 10 days. I was think of using a 70-30 mix to top dress as the soil is quite clay based. Does that seem right to you. Thanks
Hi that's all good as long as youre not seeding as the 4 in 1 would kill the seeds. If you're just scarifying and aerating them all good. I'd also sprinkle some gypsum down the aeration holes before dressing too

Hi mow when it's ready. You dont want it getting too long as itll shade the new grasses too much. Please just be very careful and cut on ahigh setting. Turning mowers around can easily move the seeds. As a guide though I'd be looking to leave it a minimum of 3 weeks if possible

Its something i started doing maybe 15 years ago after a coworker said he did his lawn with it and it came up in 3 days. It just adds in alot of good old organic goodness and helps get things off to a good start. I have on occasion used topsoil and thats also come out good. As for levelling etc I tend to use topsoil.. compost helps sandy soils retain moisture and it helps clay soils improve their structure

Its not an exact science. Shorter makes it easier but id say maybe 2 inches at most. An inch is fine

It was full of moss initially not a deal of grass. By removing the volume of moss the other stuff was needed to filling the bare areas
Another useful video Shaun, can I ask you, how do you price this sort of job, I do garden maintenance in Hertfordshire and I usually change an hourly rate, to do a good job like yours, I'm wondering how to price it without the customer thinking, how many hours is this gonna take?
Hi I've developed my own pricing structure over a few years based on square metres and a lot of trial and error.. If you looked at greenthumb website they offer pricing for a new lawn which is essentially the same as this. I am considerably cheaper but I'm happy with my pricing.

I have a north facing front lawn mostly in shadow and no matter what i do the moss seems to displace the grass, ive tined, scarified, reseeded and top dressed in the past but i seem to be fighting a losing battle, is there a more shade tolerant seed or something im not considering?
Even if you find the best seed (I've honestly not tried that many) lawn still need at least 3 hours a day of sunlight to thrive or they will begin to thin. It is harder when it's in shade all the time. Might be worth asking a couple of suppliers like barenbrug a similar question. Sorry about that

Living in Southern California and I had thatched it in October and fed my lawn “ weed & feed” however I’d like to seed and dress it? Do you think it would be okay? It’s still in the upper 70’s to 80’s. Also to water I might have to step on some of the lawn…is that okay?

Hi the temperatures are the key thing to think about and it seems to be just fine at those temperatures - similar to our summer times in the Uk.. so germination should be just fine.. but when its hot like you are having, be sure to keep it well damp for the entire 2 to 4 weeks after seeding.. and then once its all come through continue nursing it with regular watering for several months, as the roots will still be shallow, and any major stresses will lead to issues.. good luck!

Firstly, very professional complete job - well done.
Was thinking about getting a Stihl RL 540 myself - for domestic use it seems to be one of the better options.
The only thing putting me off is that it doesn’t have powered drive and I’ve a lot of slopes - is it a heavy unit to push/pull around? Or is it the case that the blades kind of pull it forward?
And generally would you recommend it?
Should say my lawns are roughly the same area as shown in the video.
My preference would be a petrol machine and price wise Billy Goat, Etiel, etc are all a bit much for a domestic user.
And one final question - is there a lawn lute you would recommend for domestic use? Price and build quality seem to vary a lot.

Hi.. The 540 is pretty good and quieter than others too. I used to use Camon machines but found them to be very loud. That said they were very powerful machines and could cut through thick layers with ease. The Stihl 540 is less powerful and sometimes may need a few passes. Other than that I can't fault it.. especially for the price.
To date Ive never seen nor even thought about a drive powered scarifier so cant comment on those Im afraid. Its not a bad idea but I couldnt give any sort of feedback other than choose a good brand.
My lute in particular was simply made by some guy off eBay many years ago for £90. That didnt include the handle, so I had to buy a broom handle. In all these years it's as good as new. Its very heavy, and I did snap a broom once inside the shaft moving it.

Hi lawns need to be measured. Our business wont disclose our own pricing structure as it's quite sensitive. However you can get a feel for pricing based on number of days worked, some profit and cost of materials. As a daily rate you will find small one man bands may charge £100 to £200 per day labour, larger firms will be more due to additional costs. Some businesses who are experts can charge more based on their skill levels. People then use them be cause they know they will get a better service. Sorry this isnt an exact reply. If you were local and wanted a quote we would be happy to do that.. also if you looked at a turfing company they typically charge from £10 to £20 per square metre

@@LawnRight I live in Scotland and I would not recommend dwarf fescue grass , I have to scarify at least 3 times a year, I use spring summer fertiliser till September fortnightly and have sprinklers to water in and autumn rise October December and Feb if condition allow . Sulphate of iron April approx 2 to 3 weeks before scarifying well watered in usually by the weather and again at the back end, this year I am using a liquid sulphate of iron in my backpack as per manufactures specs, and the lawn only looks lush if I leave it at 2 inches or above any lower and it goes a whitish yellow.
Considering overseeding with dwarf rye grass.
I have approx 200 m2 and take at least 40+ black sacks of thatch off each year, no clay, dig down 4 feet and you get gravel.
Does dwarf rye grass generate the same amount of thatch.

Hi its a product that helps break the surface tension of water making it "wetter".. it helps water get to the roots and it helps lawns which have become hydrophobic (actually repel water) because theyve not been watered for so long
Nice job there Shaun, I've just done exact same process over yesterday and this morning.
I had to hire an aerator though as unable to afford my own Christ they are expensive! When it was dropped off found it was the solid tine and not hollow tines like I'd ordered. I was suffering from really bad compaction so just used it and it's seemed to free up the area somewhat, do you think I was right in doing so?
Also what wetting agent do you use? I've seen yucca have you any experience in it.

Hi Barry in the short term itll be just fine. Next time you can choose hollow tine. Mine was bought 2nd hand off ebay for a bargain... had to drive 4 hours each way to get it though . Ive read about Yucca and the reviews seem good but havent used it.. i do plan to use a lot of products asap so i can give an opinion on it. The stuff I use is commercial unbranded

Hi yes it's absolutely fine, and same for the aerating.. try not to walk on it after scarifying though so the prepared ground is still "as is" from the day it was scarified

I have a question, I commented last week saying I've followed this step for step and since then it has rained hard every day for hours. Is there a chance that my seed will be ruined? If so do I need to overseed again? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi its possible seeds may have moved under the compost.. a little look may yield a few clues.. you may see compost that's moved showing bare soil..if so those areas may need more seed.... anyway.. I'd wait another week and see where you are at..and you've any new shoots coming through. For reference I've got a few new shoots after a week of overseeding

How late can I leave scarifying, got a busy few weekends ahead
Iif you are only scarifying you can leave it as long as you want really. To heavily scarify and have full recovery you need about 6 weeks of growing time after its been done so id say mid October.

I love both. The landzie for its speed and compact news when travelling is a clear winner. The drop spreader for its ability to adjust the flow of dressing 😊
What can you do with the scarifier bits?
Hi they just break down eventually and so I usually take them to a green waste recycling centre or pop them in the customers own garden waste bin. Itll all get turned into compost eventually 😊

Hi thanks for the kind words. If its not thinning then just scarify and aerate. However if it is thin in places you can throw some seed sown and compost on the top.. work it all down to ground with a rake or brush . Guess what im saying is see wht its like after youve done it. Also.. while it is good to do it regular.. if youre actually happy with it leave it be and consider it again in spring

If its very hot the minimum would be until all grass shoots have come through but I'd really strongly suggest to keep up watering as much as possible
I have another quick question please I am looking to scarify the lawn for the first time ever this year so I am a total novice. My Dad always did it but sadly he has recently passed away and his garden and lawn was his pride and joy. I noticed when you scarified you didn't mow the lawn short first. When I look on line for advice as I am about to do it this week it advises to make sure the grass is very short first. So not sure what is best to do. I can see the lawn has a lot of thatch and moss in it and I haven't mown it for 3 weeks. But on your videos you seem to just scarify straight away. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Should I mow the lawn short first of all? Thank you for all your help and advice I really enjoy watching your videos
Hi it is better to mow it nice and short it makes for a better scarify. I will also scarify if it's up to about 2 inches long. Good luck with it. Take your time and itll come good

I over seeded in March and its all looking good. Would you recommend scarification and another overseed in the autumn or just scarify and fertilize. I'm sure there is more thatch but lawn is looking good and so much better than 12 months ago. Thanks Shaun.
If it looks good then i wouldnt worry too much. Perhaps a maintenance scarify and then see how it looks
