- Polar plots made easy plus how to determine the true wind and apparent wind boat speed triangle. This video dives deep into how to understand a polar plot for any wind speed and any wind angle to the wind. In this video, we present the boat going at upwind angles. In the NauticEd Online Electronic Navigation course we discuss why it is necessary to understand the polar plot and how to best take advantage of it. See www.nauticed.org/sailing-cour...
Thanks for putting up this video. I am trying to digest the concept of VMG and this helps relate it to apparent wind.
Glad to help
Yes. The apparent wind is the only wind you and the boat feel. Just like putting your hand out the window of a moving car.
Great video, thanks. Can you comment on how to read the apparent wind speed, and not just the angle, from the wind triangles?
The length of the apparent wind vector is the speed.
@@NauticEd The length measured by the concentric circles for boat speed?

When I put my face into the wind, close my eyes, and turn my head to "equalize" the wind sound in my ears, I'm facing into the apparent wind?
Yes - you only feel the true wind if the boat was stopped. Think of a car tearing down a highway. Take the free NauticEd Basic Sail Trim course. www.nauticed.org/sailing-courses/view/basic-sail-trim
This boat speed upwind goes from 5kts to 8kts when the breeze goes from 10kt to 20 kts true? What kind of boat is it?
This is a fictitious boat - however, the numbers are realistic based on many boat's performance numbers.
