Peggy, I think you told me before that the focus locks on your camera when you do video. that should still allow you to zoom in and out as long as the bird stays put. Also you could try going into manual focus mode and adjusting camera settings while you film, then later edit the video with only the good bits.
(geez, I have so many ideas for other people!)
