For those that aren’t huge cycling fans or know much about crit racing. Freddy is on Legion Cycling Team which is one of the best, if not the best road crit racing teams in the United States. To be on a team like that is a huge deal and he’s extremely talented.

Freddy must be one of the most talented guys out there. The apple clearly doesn't fall too far from the tree. He looks like he's barely trying and he's hardly running at all. What a hero.

Great stuff!! Just goes to show how important having a good aerobic base is. 2:30 off 15-20 miles/week is remarkable

Matt is blowing at his ass and Freddy is jumping up on the crossbar in the recovery 😀. I love how he said his Dad was a bit of a runner. Probably one of the greatest racers ever. His laid back attitude and approach is refreshing, can’t wait to see how does in Berlin.

What also would be REALLY amazing to see is, how would Freddy do in triathlon!!?? Do a year training with swimming then I'd even make a case he would be fighting for top10 positions easily!

It really is all about the runner!
Freddy was super interesting, the vibe was gret all through, just fascinating!
Beautiful day. Great backdrop. Brilliant all the way through.

the end is too funny, I do the same thing where I tell my training partners to not go crazy in the last reps when i’m usually the one who leads 💀🤣

I feel like cross training is not seriously utilised by professional runners. The whole “run slow to run fast” is vastly overstated and those easy or junk miles can be substituted as the additional impact and wear on the body is not worth the gain.
I am former rower who got into running and cycling. I have found great benefit and gains in both over the last several years without injury or overdue fatigue.
To be a pro in a craft, you must do the craft often and do it well- but at what cost physically and mentally? I’d love to know your thoughts. Thanks and best of luck in Berlin!

With all due respect, these are lots of sweeping statements with little scientific or historical evidence. The correlation and causation between running mileage and running efficiency and performance have been proven many times over. How do you get more running mileage safely without running lots at easy pace? You do not gain running efficiency by cycling. You don’t think if Kipchoge could get fast aqua jogging instead of pounding dirt, he’d have done it by now?

    • @RyanGmc

I agree with you in the third paragraph mate. They do need high mileage. Over time form does develop but there is a peak anatomically speaking. Intensity and intent are key in this discussion, so I am sorry if there was not enough detail.
I am saying the risk of slogging an additional 30 or more K’s a week is to what gain aerobically? It doesn’t take much to develop an injury regardless of form and efficiency.
It’s easy to cite the best the world has ever seen. But for every great, there are thousands of others who have fell short or ended their careers due to physical limitations. What is the opposition of lowering the onset training stress by doing aerobic work elsewhere?

What a great video, thanks for sharing!
Freddy is super interesting to me as I will too race Berlin in a few weeks and I am usually training for ironman triathlon (8:57 Ironman PR)
Freddy has the aerobic base. The enigma is how his body will bare the high mechanical demands of long fast running.
Building the aerobic base through cycling works fantastic. But I am not convinced it will be enough for his body to withstand the impact.
I ran a 2:46 in the past off mostly cycling and swimming as well (and endurance was not the limiter too), and this time I have put some more run milage aiming for freddys time as well.
Although I don't have his cycling or past running abilities, it will be an interesting experience.
Speaking about nutrition, I am not certain the other runners racing are collapsing because they don't do the nutrition well. It might just be the huge base freddy has that sets him apart, and so @ 4:00 pace he uses mostly fat and doesn't even need much carbs, while others going at 2:48 might be at their limit and they go through their carb resources.
Meet you guys at Berlin, would very much love to chat further!
    Thanks again
    Tom

When you say huge base he has, what would be a big week of base building for him?

    • @annashaymarmarelli8533
      @annashaymarmarelli8533 2 года назад

@@na-dk9vm In pro cycling a base week is 25-30hrs with 85%+ at aerobic pace. Training for a marathon, even the best in the world run maybe 13-15hrs a week, hence there is a big difference in terms of fat burning abilities between the two

Cool video, Matt! Goes to show that if injury or interest are playing into it, you can still run well on lower volume. Obviously he’s a freak and probably one of a few in the world who could run 15m/week and run 2:30 but it can be done with other aerobic means of cross training

Should switch to triathlon, the swim doesn't count that much if you're a strong cyclist anyway.
